James on his deathbed: “I took the combat shotgun course at Thunder Ranch”
I thought it would be "The Gimp suit under the bed isn't mine...."
😂😂
“A shotgun can physically remove a chunk of cake from the birthday cake and throw it on the floor!” -Clint (Birthday Boy) Smith
Mossberg has the best safety out there. I’m a lefty so I especially like it. But how many people have you seen visually check Crossbolt safeties? Almost everyone. The tang safety is intuitive and visible.
Yep. When I was a kid my dad bought me a winchester 1300, which was a better shotgun, but the cross bolt safety was not good for my left handedness. I used to walk the right side of the hunting line and leave the safety off, and when I had to walk in the hedgerow I would just have an empty chamber.
You can check a crossbolt simply by feeling with your finger. No need to look. Ive ran both kinds but prefer the crossbolt. Probably from rabbit and bird hunting so much: with thick gloves on, your finger rests right on the crossbolt naturally and you dont need to break your grip with your thumb to reach a tang safety. But if you’re a lefty, i can see the benefit to a tang
For some reason "left, right" is harder for people than "up, down" 😂
The new 1301 video and now this? James you're too kind to us shotgun nerds.
Kind? Not to my wallet. Scourge of the gun world.
Need a showdown between the A300 and 940Pro
@@BaqTalk yea I'd watch that. Both are illegal in Illinois so im a screwed pooch for right now but i can live vicariously through someone else.
A300 was my choice. The furniture was a big selling point.@@BaqTalk
Hey what's not to like. Now a hardcore two week unsupported military patrol behind enemy lines, maybe it's not the best choice. But you look at most personal protection/self defense situations, buckshot at 10 to say maybe a hundred feet, shotguns have been getting the job done for what the past 150 to 200 years. To put it simply, right situation shotguns work
Mossberg, Clint, and Jack there could nothing be more exciting than this.
Yeah his AKs are so dangerous they should be recalled. This isn’t a cash grab
Benelli, Clint and JB Rye.
@@michaelschmidt5179when there’s a reported issue let me know (there hasn’t been any btw).
But no short shorts on James just the fanny pack

"Shotgun Mozart". Absolute poetry. thanks James!
Whoever did the intro nailed it. Please tell them they knocked it out of the park!
I've got an ancient 500a that was a police department trade in. It was beat up as hell. Cleaned it up and it's still 100% reliable to this day. Have had it over a decade now.
I've got an old 500 too. Mine was produced before the GCA in 1968. Factory produced without a serial number and a single action bar instead of double like the post 1970 models. I know nothing about it but it was fairly clean when I got it over a decade ago.
Good to see autoloader offerings from Mossberg. I would love to see how this 940 compares to the 1301/A300.
Glad Clint is still kicking ass.
Sold, I'm a Mossberg shotgun fan, I have 4 variants already. These look to be set up nicely.
Always preferred Mossberg to Remington.
3 Major reasons.
1) tang mounted safety is ambi and doesn't require you to break your grip to engage/disengage
2) action bar lock/ slide release location also allows you to maintain your grip, unlike the forward mounted on on the Remington.
3) Ejector is a separate piece, instead of fixed. Being a common failure point, being able to replace one with a simple screw is a big bonus.
As a final advantage... at least for the last 20 yrs? They aren't built by remington with their shit quality control.
I'm lefty and the tang safety is almost a necessity. I wish the mavericks didn't have the cross bolt safety.
I have not seen a Remington fail in Police Departments. I have seen mossberg failures. What CQ issues in PARTICULAR are YOU referring to? Because it sounds like you have only owned a Mossberg.
Your first point actually works against you. The safety is a terrible idea. Ambi aside, the safety is easier to slip off accidentally. It’s literally a Paul Harrell meme all over the world.
Your second part is actually terrible as well. You may actually engage the slide bar by accident as opposed to the 870. When would you need a combat grip WHILE opening the slide bar anyhow? If you are opening the slide bar. Stuff has already gone bad. Switch to the sidearm.
I have never seen an ejector break on a Remington. If an ejector breaks you have done something wrong.
@@Sig_P229
Lol what? Have you been living under a rock or something?
Remingtons garbage QC for the last 20 ish years is a well known fact in the gun world.
Everyone knows this, except you apparently.
Literally do 5 seconds of research online or go to a gun store and talk to people.
That being said Remington used to make phenomenal shotguns and it mostly just came down to personal preference. I’ve always preferred mossberg but you couldn’t go wrong either way.
There’s been rumblings in the gun space lately that Remingtons quality control has started to improve finally, wether that’s true or how long it will last us yet to be determined.
Even if so the damage is probably already done.
Mossbergs the only game in town these days.
Although I would never dissuade someone from buying a old Remington if they find one for a good deal.
@@AJ-gk7bn I used to work as an armorer for a police department. We sold all our mossbergs or made them bean bag guns. Nothing but problems. The 870 never failed us. The customer service for Mossberg is the worst in the firearms business.
I know about all the grumblings on the internet but none of it lines up with my experiences. I will say Remington makes the worst handguns known to man
Clint is the man who made the definitive quote about shotguns.
The one that people so often misquote and remove context from?
Ok...I'll ask...what's the quote ???
@@kippnovak9833
a pistol will put a hole in someone, a rifle will put a hole through someone, and a shotgun will take a chunk of shit out of someone and throw that shit on the ground.
Not sure that’s exact. But it’s close.
@@Kenthis15 thanx for the reply...sounds like him...
That’s close enough
Love scatterguns!! Wish manufacturers would standardize either ghost ring or rifle style sights. They greatly increase your accuracy and capabilities without a big increase in price
Agreed. I have a Mossberg 590A1 SPX and I love the sights that came with it! LPA ghost ring rear sight with a bladed, red fiber optic rifled front sight. I've got almost 1,500 rounds through it and it has yet to let me down. The sight picture is great, it's very accurate and incredibly reliable. Currently in the market for a 940. You can't go wrong with a Mossberg.
Bead is faster
Personally i would like to have ghost ring with picatinny rail like in beretta 1301.
Edit: Yes with straight cut you get your optic lower but it limits whatkind
of optics you can actually use. So that why i prefer picatinny rail.
For that you can slap literally anything.
Bead is easy and fast to use but i dont think it work too well with
rail on receiver.
my benelli supernova 18" came with ghost ring sights. theyre awesome. I sometimes regret getting a pic rail+side saddle and putting a red dot on it.
Bead sight working for decades
Bought a Mossberg 500 20 plus years ago. Purchased it due to the cool factor of the pistol grip. After shooting a couple boxes of shells through it I stopped on the way home and bought a stock for it. I’ve shot the stew out of it. It’s home was my closet. Now it’s in the safe. Been replaced by the 940. Couldn’t be happier with it. 500 rounds + through it. Wanted the Bennelli m4. Just couldn’t fork out the money.
It's always a good day at Thunder Ranch with Clint.
My first gun, purchased days after I turned 18 (way back in 2002, don't do the math) was a Mossberg 500 "Persuader". I definitely have never done anything crazy with it, but its still flawless after over 20 years. If it wasn't I'd be picking up one of these, no questions asked.
Your math isn't too bad... I was 18 when you were 9... don't do my math. Lol
I'm right there with you my fellow 1984 brother! Except in 02 on my 18th, I bought a Baikal 12G SxS coach gun.
But I no longer have it as it was traded for a West German Sig P228 years ago.
Shouldn't be worried about the math if your 18th occurred in a year starting with "2", man. 😆
Still nettled that my 500 went in my divorce. My ex hates firearms so just did it because she could.
@@GryphonBrokewing When I think of loosing guns in a divorce, my mind goes to Burt and his wife from Tremors.
I imagine it would doubly suck just to have it done out of spite.
@@GryphonBrokewing My girl knows better than to go after the knives or guns.
She knows I will just buy more and take them back.
Streamlight makes a really underrated mag tube light Mount that is pretty inexpensive and clamps on really tight.
I grew up with shotguns in TN, got my first single shot 12 gauge when I was 11 (‘91), and used to deer hunt with it. I’ve owned many but my 12 gauge 7 shot Maverick that I bought in ‘06 in Fairbanks has done the job multiple times and done it well!
I'd argue that the 590A1 retro with surplus M7 bayonet is the best pump shotgun on the market. These are awesome too. Love Mossberg
I still want to see a comparison video between the 940 and the A300 two guns that are trying to fill the same role and similar price point, unless I missed that video, most ones I see are Beretta vs Benelli or A300 vs 1301
No one wants to lose the sponsorship to either company.
Love Mossberg stuff, especially on the pump side of the house. But Beretta owns the semi-auto title right now with the Ultima/1301 imo.
And the A300
I have a tricked out mossberg 930 spx that is pretty darn good and would love to see a comparison of the 1301 to the 940 so I know which one to get next.
@@ryanhall9877the 1301 is better, no need to watch a comparison. It’s in a league of its own.
@@ryanhall9877 I'd say go for the 1301. I've got the A300UP and it's fantastic, but I do wish it had the BLINK system and aftermarket stock options (GG&G) the 1301 has.
The new Gen2 1301 is the king of the hill, and probably will be for a while.. That said, my Ultima does a phenomenal job as well at a lower price point.
I'm most familiar with shotguns. Grew up with most kinds. I've always loved Mossberg the most. These videos make me feel all warm and fuzzy.
I love Clint. Big heart, Good man. Straight up person. Gotta love it. They don’t make em like that no more
I picked up a 590a1 just before the holidays as my first shotgun. I haven't had much time on a gauge, despite my dad being a big skeet & wing shooter before I was born. I have several boxes of mixed shells he gave me and some of them are "stout" express loads. I want to take a couple of classes to get a better feel for how to properly run the pump before picking up a 940.
Also have the 590A1 and I’ve done a few classes with it. It’s a big brute of a gun but it runs well! Controls feel great and the ghost ring sights are excellent.
I just picked one up myself. What a tank it is 😁
A year ago, I got my 940 Pro Tac - Based in part on your rec, James, and my experiences with my 590A1.
One of the very first things I did was add a Noveske QD cup to the butt, and replaced the Choate tube extension with a GG&G tactical, with pic rail for light mounting.
I -love- that shotgun, and am thrilled to see another 940 video from you, as I don't think it gets near enough love - given some of the hiccups with early production runs - and I have no intention of getting another Semi until I break this one beyond repair.
I've been a shotgunner since my first taste in firearms when I was 12...if your rig is setup correctly and you are proficient in loading and recoil management you can be extremely deadly with a shotgun.
I bought a 940 pro with the holosun and put an urbino tactical stock and a match saver and I absolutely love it
Thank you for continuing to make all the shotgun videos for us shotgunners out there!
I’m glad to see Clint Smith back in action 💯
I have the Maverick Thunder Ranch O/U. It is absolutely my favorite shotgun.
After owning a 590A1 for many years, and having utter faith in her it was a small leap to purchase a 940 Pro Waterfowl as my waterfowl gun. I can’t say enough positive accolades in reference to both of these guns. I already own a 1301 so I probably won’t pick up the TR edition 940, but damn I really want one. 🇺🇸🦅 ❤Mossberg
The 930 was my first shotgun. I considered upgrading to the 940 but then learned you can just upgrade it with a 100 dollar kit from OR3GUN to get the better reliability.
Yes more Clint, miss this guys content
I’m hopeful. Aside from price I think the ergonomics will be the deciding factor between this(940) and the Beretta A300 Ultimate Patrol.
That’s my thing. Which one 😂😂😂
I cannot speak to the 940, but I am not really a shotgun guy... Until the a300.
I can't stop shooting it, buying gucci accessories, and just play with it. Love it. All I can say is you cannot go wrong with the a300 and the biggest win over the 940 is the handguard has mlok up front, and as mentioned in the video those barrel clamps suck so the a300 is a bit easier out of the box.
This looks pretty similar though and the green looks clean. I really like the idea of it's safety. Love the 590 safety.
Idk but I doubt you can go wrong with either!
If only there was an m-lok slot directly in the handguard rather than that clamp this would be a perfect combat shotgun. Unfortunately i can't say i trust those clamps when it comes to hold a flashlight after the shock of many 00 buckshot shells being fiered. Otherwhise i love everything: the controls (especially that safety) the sling cups, the red dot cut, the reliability... The only thing is not having a better solution to mount a flashlight.
I bought the G&G steel piece that goes by the castle nut for my 940 tactical. So now I've got a spot to mount a light and a sling without that plastic barrel clamp. Plus i bought the steel barrel clamp too. Yes you have to purchase some aftermarket stuff. But it greatly improved my scattergun. I loves my 940 pro. I stopped looking at the 1301 or Ultima. I've got what i need.
very funny that the a300 comes in under this price
I hope we get a lot more tactical shotguns out in the future. I absolutely love em and would love to have more options from different quality manufacturers out there. Like FN needs to bring back the SLP
Love my 590s and 940 Pro- excellent guns!
Been a Mossberg fan
Since the seventies, these are looking badass ! Looking like this old man will be getting a new pepper gun👍🤝🇺🇸
Please post more videos with Clint! Loving the content so much
I just made the choice between the 940tac and the a300 patrol. Went for the a300 just because it came with ghost ring sights out of the box.
Will be grabbing that 590, even tho I already have 3 others..
I run a JM940Pro and im excited for this version. Clint is the man
I like mossberg, but I chose a Betetta 1301 Tactical Mod2. I doubt I’ll regret it. I definitely want to head over to Thunder Ranch for both their shotgun course as well as a few rifle courses. I live less than 3 hours from them I think.
I'm going to get both I like the way the Beretta 1301 looks so it's bought, and I've been wanting a 940 pro for years, but until I get the money I'm going to have to stick with my 870 .
@@rdf4315 Nothing wrong with an 870. I chose the Mod2 for the upgrades over the standard 1301, and I don’t like to have multiple guns that fill the same role, except a couple-few overlapping pistols. I had an AGA500 pistol grip for years, and it ran. Grandad’s 870 is sitting in pops’ safe, and while he doesn’t shoot it, it runs. Someday, not too far off, my boy will be shooting it and pop will be gone.
Best bang for your buckshot shotguns just got better with the Thunder Ranch treatment
Love my TR 590 pump, alot. I wasn’t expecting The Kuiu camo stocks to be more slippery than blood on ice though.
I wish I could send you a pic of my mossberg 940 tactical after I painted it… I paint a lot of guns for myself and other people but my 940 turned out really good… it’s really a awesome shotgun as long as you use brass shells and not those aluminum ones…thanks for the video buddy
The shotgun is making a BIG comeback.
Clint Smith and Jack are my heroes
Clint has a unique way how to explain what shotgun does to the human body
Jack, Great review keep
them coming! I own 930 pro mossberg and love that shotgun as used it for 3gun Competition as it has been a beast!
I need a 1301 vs 940 video
Looks great still getting a 590 retro it looks so sick
Would love a 590s version of this. Would buy.
Clint, Mossberg and James, great 😅
James, we now need your hot take on 940, 590, A300 and 1301 😅
I bought mine yesterday. It came Cerakoted in O.D. Green
One critical design flaw that made me sell my 940: if you push the bolt release while it is in battery, it will cause two shells to be released at the same time causing a jam. I absolutely hate that it does this because I loved everything else about it.
GG&G makes steel light mounts for both, and Defender Tactical makes light mounts for the 590 as well as some other cool things like extended safeties with built in rear sights as well as adpaters for the non 590S models that'll allow yours to run 1 3/4" shells simultaneously with standard 2 3/4" and 3". Mossbergs are getting a lot of love, just need more options for handgaurds on the 940 tired of having to mount my light switch with ranger bands. Although there is something to be said about the Mcguyver 100mph tape/ranger band/paracord aesthetic.
Now we must know… Thunder Ranch 940 Pro VS Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol!
If you prefer having a pre-milled optics cut, get the 940. If you prefer having velcro installed on your receiver side for a saddle, get the A300.
Thank you.
Kinda wish they would have put the extended tube and a Magpul foregrip, would’ve made a lil more sense
Frickin Awesome 👍
I've used a 500,5500mk2,835 and 935. Never had a problems, ever. Have built numerous slug rigs with 100% success. Their factory backing of parts is the ONLY issue!
Great reportingb James I look forward to your Shot Show report.
I had a 940 JM Pro years back when I was dabbling in 3 gun and it ran like a top.
That optic mount is spectacular
Finally looks like a Thunder Ranch edition of something that doesn't suck
I have the previous Thunder Ranch 590 with the camo, m loc forend and breaching muzzle. I love it.
I wish factories would go with short length of pull stocks. I love the old speedfeed body armor stocks. The Mesa Urbino seems pretty good as well.
If Clint Smith endorses a product, then it’s pretty good. I don’t like shotguns but grudging admit that a Maverick 88 looks good for what I’m going to use it for. That said, the TS 590 and 940 make a strong argument, especially for the semi.
I had a 940 Pro Field and loved it. However, during a day of sporting clays in 110 degree weather, my cousin and I were shooting it back to back. Nothing like a "burn down" but a lot of shooting with little time between. Cycled perfect every time but the next time I went to shoot it the point of aim was way left. Realized the barrel had warped and it was obvious just by looking down it. Mossberg replaced it no questions asked and I still like them. I doubt the Fabarm XLR5 waterfowler I replaced it with would do the same. Build quality twice as good. Also twice the price but worth it.
Thunder Ranch Mossberg 940 or Beretta A300 Patrol?
1st shotgun question - the cheapest 590 A1 (50766) is available up here in commie-Canada for $750 CDN (which is US MSRP without a 40% hit on our crappy dollar) and this looks close to this Thunder Ranch build. Is the 7-shot that much more handy than the 9-shot and that's the reason Clint built his new model on the shorter version? Slap a rail and red dot on this version and leave the bead sight for what I can see is the lowest cost A1 to start training with?
I hope that the 940 barrel will be available for purchase in order to convert the length of a skeet/field version to a tactical shotty similar to an A300 or 1301.
I do like that direct mill, perfect for an EPS. This and the A300 Ultima Patrol are both fantastic options for half the price of the M4 (I love mine and will never sell it) and 1301 Mod 2.
Luv my 930.❤❤
Saw Clint in the thumbnail and knew it had to be worth hearing
More Clint if possible, please.
Hmm. So, 940 pro thunder Ranch or Beretta a300 Ultima patrol?
If you could only buy one auto shotgun would it be the beretta 1301 tactical or 940 pro tactical thunder ranch (money not the main issue)….Thanks!🙏
I wonder why they got rid of the breacher barrel and mlok pump handle with this new version of the 590.
Had the 940 Pro Tactical. Couldn’t get ride of it soon enough. The m-lock is frail to mount a light - my flashlight went flying. The stock is fixed, you can’t replace it with a magpul stock. Shot 30 slugs, had several malfunctions. Mossberg rep told me they don’t recommend loading it with Federal 00 buckshot w flitecontrol because it’s not hot enough. Imagine that… A tactical shotgun isn’t built to cycle the best defensive load on the market. I think Mossberg missed the mark on this one.
870s are the Mossbergs we have at home.
I really want the 940 to go with my 590. The sights and mlok mounts on the A300 are swaying me that way.
Ooooh handgaurd with a QD mount. Glad Clint put some sense in Mossberg. Great shottys eitherway though.
Are the safety and trigger packs polymer? Especially on the 590 should have a metal trigger pack or its same ol junk
I’ve had my 940 pro for about a year now. The barrel clamp that it came with was trash. It warped and won’t hold a flashlight without creeping forward with each shot. I added an aftermarket one off amazon that works much better, but left the original as a dedicated sling point. Mine has the 407k attached and it has stood up like a champ
Glad to see people stepping away from remington. Ive seen them literally fall apart several times through hard use. And NO, your 870 that has been riding in a cruiser for 30 years and still works has NOT. BEEN. USED. Im amazed it withstood a few dozen rounds per year and being put in and out of a trunk every day. Wow. Such rugged.
S&J Hardware oversized mossberg safety is a MUST
Why not add QD mounts on the 590 butt stock? And why not add ghost ring sights with a 1913 rail on the rear sight?
Use paracord and hook claw on the sling for the 590.
940 pro tac and an A300 are next for me.
590 with the cut for an optic is a beautiful sbs
I have a 940 tac, love it, wonder if they sell those stocks separately
Gotta have the 940
What’s the best light mount for a pump
