  • Coming off the shelf for a 40+ minute video essay is Transformers Decepticons for the nintendo DS. Released in 2007, it brought ambitious gameplay elements such as free roam to the table. The game features six playable characters that all play slightly differently, and four worlds for you to freely explore and cause mayhem in. Alongside this comes one of the most captivating storylines on the DS system.
    ~~~
    You take on the role of the game's Create-A-Bot OC character, as you arrive on earth in search of a faint Decepticon distress signal, believed to be Megatron's. Led by Starscream, you and your team scramble from Nevada to Qatar in search of the ex-leader, in hopes of reviving him and restoring honor to the Decepticon faction. You'll quickly realise that some of your comrades don't share the same motivation for bringing back the Decepticon warlord, and you'll find yourself coming face to face with not only the Autobot resistance, but your own allies. Remain loyal to the mission and learn what it means to become a true Decepticon.
Or when Starscream hints to Breakdown they'll start a coup? Completely forgotten about and never brought up again. Starscream strikes out on his own become a third player? Ends up crawling back to Megatron with the Omega Keys, and having Dreadwing just when it's shown his character going in a specific direction. It's almost maddening how that show sets up subplots with a lot of potential, only for it to be instantly forgotten.       Watching these nostalgia videos or just clips from old Transformers media I have noticed a lot of the people who tend to love TFP Starscream are shippers? I'm not exactly sure where these people came from, as I don't recall there being a huge shipping community when I was a kid.
      What I'm trying to say is, TFP Starscream's popularity seems to be propelled by that niche within the fandom as they obsess over that representation. I think making Starscream a useless coward and then comedy relief is just a waste of his character.
      Early IDW comics, this DS game, Animated, and even Armada have done far better with Starscream than Prime.
    I think the best part about Megatron's betrayal of your team at the end of the game is that at that point, he has a magical cube that in the film lets Frenzy's severed head shit out a new body, can fold itself from the size of a warehouse to the size of a fedex package, and give life to any random electronic object.
    He has all the resources in the universe and still calls fixing his most loyal subjects a waste.
    It makes the line hit extra hard and solidifies that Barricade either THOUGHT he had Megatron figured out, or gave him a bit of depth as having some kind of inferiority complex that serving Megatron stoked into suicidal zeal.
    • @hellstrom4209
    Hands down, my favorite DS games growing up and it really did feel like no one else knew about them. Hell, there was no place to discuss them even. The sheer breadth of having massive open world maps, fun combat and locomotion, a shitload of different vehicle forms to use, a top tier list of VAs and a pretty underrated story, and this easily ranks as one of the best Transformers games, period.
    My only gripe was that you couldn't scan and use police/military vehicles and, in the Autobot version (the one I played), you were closed off from jet modes completely unless you did Target event thing that granted you a jet character (one that never even appeared in the story?) What really annoys me about it, is that there's a secret hangar on the Hoover Dam map with jets and choppers in it and YOU COULDN'T SCAN THE DAMN JET! Seriously, that would've been an amazing secret to get!
    I love how the games story highlights how fundamentally flawed the decepticons ideology real is, Megatron wins but is the only survivor (I've always seen the exchange between megs and your bot as an implication that brawl died offscreen) which means he's without close allies at the very least. A line that prime says during his fight is "you'll never build an empire", add that with starscreams line about someone will always go against Megatron is also interesting because it implies the only ones who knew megs the most know how destructive Megatron as a leader really is. This game's plot had more meaning than it ever should have had and I respect the writers for it.
      @annointedbytalos5673 Рік тому +15
      Yeah and it makes complete sense that Megatron wouldn't waste any energon on repairs besides you are a candidate to challenge his reign as starscream pointed out. It's also a furthering of what barricade said with weakness breeds fear and turns allies into enemies, therefore weakness can't be allowed to exist. Barricade is ok with serving and dying for his Lord. The Autobots are weaker physically and limited by their morals, but that is not a bad thing. It shows what just power for powers sake means it's without any honor that i previously thought existed with the decepticons.
      P.S.
      Them saying starscream is a coward for not fighting Megatron head on misleads you to think Megatron is a leader that has honor but no he takes you out when you are to weak to fight back and or no longer useful to him. He is further than that also weak. Optimus fights for others even though he is stronger than most. It really genuinely brings out any morals that was buried in the first movie.
Imagine a seperate campaign where you work with Starscream to kill the other Decepticons for not siding with him and any other Autobots but at the end of it all he kills you because he has no need for you.
      This, definitely. I understand that they probably couldn't do a branching story with the DS tech? but the possibility for an alternate endgame phase after that would've been super cool to see. Could've made Optimus the final boss with that route, too. His role would've been more prominent with Megatron being dead, as he'd be the final obstacle to overcome. I'd either wanna see a Starscream vs Optimus final boss, or one where Starscream tasks you with killing Optimus for him as a final test for you. I don't know if after that it would be better to join him as his right hand man, or have him kill you. Joining him as his right hand man kinda stays true to your goal from the beginning of the game, as that's your role throughout he whole story up until you join Megatron
This leads to him appearing in the arctic in the autobots version as a boss battle, during which he mentions himself having plans which is to find megatron. It’s pretty cool seeing the two versions crossover at times and makes me appreciate the way this this game as a whole and starscream were written.
    Used to play Decepticons so much I can confidently recite the whole game line for line from memory. Also diacovered a few exploits along the way.
    During the tutorial where you scan your first vehicle, if you turn the system off immediately after scanning the truck, starting the system back up and completing the mission, you'll be back as a protoform once in freeplay.
    For the first bumblebee fight, you can use Barricade's vehicle form blaster to slowly whittle his health away so that once you reach each robot mode area, he'll immediately run. Do this fast enough and you can kill him before reaching the scripted cutscene.
    For the Blackout mission in Qatar, standing at the back of the roof while you scan, you can use the level geometry to shield you from the missiles.
    When going to attack the army camp as barricade, if you stay in vehicle form at the minimum render distance, you can use the missile attack to bring the base down to 40% at which point tanks spawn out of nowhere.
    When the two autobots show up after, you can chuck them in the water to instakill them.
    When reviving Megatron, utilize the Sportster or the Ice Cream Van because their heavy projectiles are OP, and arent so big that it will fuck with the camera angles.
    With the Jazz fight, if you need to regen health, go up on the rock platform where you can actually farm the rock destructibles by moving in and out of render distance causing them to respawn.
    For the Optimus fight you can actually get him stuck in a tight alley between two buildings where you can pelt him with heavy projectiles.
    Your video inspired me to go back and replay this game. It was one of my favorites as a kid. I truly, honestly think it holds up to this day. The thing I loved the most about this game was that it had a surprisingly nuanced portrayal of the dynamic between Megatron, Starscream and the Decepticon subordinates.
    I believe this game has an even better portrayal of Starscream than you give it credit for, and because of a subtext that runs throughout the entire plot: Hypocrisy. The more I think about this game's story, the more I think that Starscream was the lesser of two evils between him and Megatron.
    Even as a kid, I never understood why the other Decepticons saw Starscream as a hypocrite or coward. Think about it: Barricade calls Starscream a backstabber and conniver. Someone who would kill you in your sleep. And that Megatron would have the "ball bearings" to kill you to your face. But take a look at their actual actions, since actions speak louder than words - Starscream literally personally kills the Decepticons who betray him, right to their faces (I interpreted Brawl's disappearance as Starscream killing him offscreen). He even gave Barricade a chance to submit before killing him. And he personally fought Megatron even after losing the Allspark. IMO now that I think about it... calling Starscream a coward and backstabber was all just projection since Starscream was the only one to personally stand up to Megatron.
    Whereas with Megatron, look at what he does after the final battle. After fucking EVERYTHING that you've done for him. After Starscream specifically told you "You must ensure Megatron is never revived." After you betray Starscream for Megatron due to that and... honestly mostly Peer Pressure from the other Decepticons. Who told you that Starscream is a backstabber and "You always know where you stand with Megatron. That he would have the ball bearings to kill you to your face." After you literally do everything to help him take down Starscream at the cost of becoming heavily damaged yourself... what is your reward??? Megatron calls you weak and kills you on the spot when you can't even defend yourself. Saying it's not even worth the resources to repair you and having the gall to insult Barricade, Blackout and Brawl after they're dead. Even though he owes his life to you and them. If you ask me, that one act comes across as EXTREMELY cowardly on Megatron's part. Not that he's a coward in general, since he personally fought Jazz, Optimus, and Starscream but that's neither here nor there. The ending punched me in the gut as a kid and pissed me off something fierce. I hated Megatron for that, and I wanted to go back and kill him in his sleep.
    I fully believe that if you were given the choice to side with Starscream in the game, he would let you live and even become his right-hand man. He has a set of demands for the Rookie and only turns on him after the Rookie betrays him. It's a story about how paranoia and distrust can ruin and cloud your judgment, leading to disastrous consequences. A clear example of why being a Villain isn't such a great thing after all. For there is no honor amongst thieves.
    • @PiranhaRoni
      @PiranhaRoni  Рік тому
      This comment is perfectly worded! Couldn't have put it better myself! I always thought that too, That Starscream was technically the 'main villain' throughout the entire game, but in reality wasn't even that bad. He acted like Megatron did in the G1 cartoons, and in most other portrayals. He acted like a Decepticon leader would act, and yet he was flamed for it by the others due to blind loyalty, which ultimately got them killed. Not to mention Starscream in this game is a tank, shown to be capable of fighting just about anyone while holding his own.
      In the final battle, Megatron will periodically yell at him "You couldn't defeat Optimus Prime and the Autobots once and for all", glossing over the fact that he found the Allspark, killing Bumblebee, Blackout and Barricade in quick succession for it. He wouldn't have killed anyone had they followed his orders. They disobeyed him as current Decepticon leader, and they paid the price for it. Megatron calls them all his 'Brothers' in the mission before Ambush (the one where you fight Jazz) and there's nothing he does after that that suggests he actually thinks of them this way. Like you said, he insults them after they're dead for...being dead. "If they were truly decepticons they would've survived" which is rich considering the only way they could've survived is if they joined Starscream. I always like to look at that line as a sort of subliminal message to the player that, if we'd just listened to Starscream, the Decepticon empire would've flourished.
      Also, I was wondering if it would be alright to use your comment for a video? I'd love to make a short video on this topic and your comment is worded wonderfully!
      Edit: One last non-sequitur I'll add is that in my headcanon, Blackout had the same fight with Ratchet as in Autobots version at the same time as the Brawl vs. Ironhide fight. Brawl and Ratchet's disappearance reeks of cut content to me. That way, Megatron is truly the only one standing at the end, and it would have given Blackout a Boss Fight. They did Blackout dirty in these games tbh.
    • @PiranhaRoni
      @PiranhaRoni  Рік тому +2
      I feel like Blackout should've been a boss for the Starscream's betrayal mission. So you'd fight Bumblebee, Blackout AND Barricade in quick succession. Either that, or a similar thing to the autobots version where you face Barricade and his Goon at the same time as Optimus. Starscream vs Blackout and Barricade simultaneously could've honestly taken the cake for best mission in the game if they'd done that.
    There’s something tragic about Optimus’ final stand against Megatron. His entire team is dead. The Allspark is in the hands of Starscream. Someone he can’t reasonably pursue. All he has left is this fight. But alas…. It is not a fight he is destined to win.
    • @PiranhaRoni
      Yeah, its like he's just grasping at straws because he refuses to give up. His resolve is too strong. He still sees reason to fight though I think. Likelihood is that Starscream would leave Earth alone, but he knew that Megatron would lay waste to everything in his wake
    Loved this game growing up and this review. I genuinely think that the story was the best incarnation of the Megatron-Starscream dynamic in any transformers media that I have seen.
    Perhaps unintentionally, it does a great job of exploring and critiquing how easily and naively someone can be co-opted into a fascist cult, or any cult for that matter. The way in which you as the player are duped by your fellow comrades and Megatron into believing you have a place by his side, only to be discarded and killed the moment you are no longer physically able to fulfil your function under his regime.
    You have no idea how refreshing it is to see someone talking about one of my favorite childhood DS games of all time! I use to play the whole trilogy; the ROTF games were alright, and the DOTM games are a faded memory. However, with strong passion, the real homerunners are these two first titles. One of my favorite glitches to mess around with, I found by pure accident was to become fully playable in cutscenes! By spam tapping the mission briefing icon on the middle-left side of the bottom screen, the game would overlap the brief page ontop of the cutscene. After tabbing it out, you'd have various results-- some allowed you to move freely, while some allowed you to fire weapons at the NPCs currently talking and even kill them. Killing certain NPCs in specific situations would softlock the game. For instance, on the Ratchet vs Blackout fight above the building, you could cheese the fight by shooting him during his dialogue.
    I use to own an Action Replay chip to unlock all the cars, cheats, and both skydive and G1 starscream. The Armageddon cheat with Psycho cars was hilariously hard to beat both games with! And super jump on high agility characters was fun too.
    All in all, I hope you get out of these troubling times bro. I'd love to see you make more content about the transformers DS titles! Its funny, sometimes I wager myself in believing that they're better than WFC and FOC. But my back would be against the wall with than objection.
