- CENTRAL HEATING TRAINING - Lots of different central heating systems. One pipe central heating systems. Two pipe central heating systems. Central heating design. Y plan heating system. S plan heating system. I'm going to talk about warm pipe systems. I'm going to talk about two pipe systems. I've got two pipe system, Oh that side. I'm also going to show you some on the floor heating systems. I'm going to show you some S plan and y plan and just try and give you a brief overview of central heating and central heating design. So let's have a look now. If you've got any questions, please ask them in the comments below as we go in on for this video. Don't wait till the end because you might forget. All right, let's have a look now.
central heating systems explained on the right onsite here we have a why plan system and we'll go into that in more detail shortly. I'm on the left. We've got an S plum system and this one has two zone valves. Sometimes you might have an S plan plus system on that system. You'd have maybe free zone valves or you could even have more zone valves and again, we'll go into that in a bit more detail shortly. We could have a one pipe system. This system here is a one pipe central heating system and if we see that we've got one pipe, and again we'll go into that in a bit more detail shortly. We could have a two pipe heating system. So this is a standard heating system that you would normally see in a prop putter.
And then you could also have on the fly heating. So you can have a central heating system that's got under floor heating. And again we'll go into this in a bit more detail, Charlotte. So this is a two pipe 18 system. There's lots and lots of different types of heating systems and ways that you would control the heating system. But the main, the main system we would use is a two pipe 18 system. And what would be, you would have a floor. Now this floor could be in different materials. This is in MLCP pipe and it could be in copper and it could also be in stumbled plastic pipe. This pipe into the radio here, this is the floor I'm out of the road answer. We've got returned pipe. So this flow comes from the central heating in Baila and the return goes back to the central heating boiler. So what I'll go now, we'll zoom in and I'll show you this in a bit more
So if we look to pipe system, we can see the flow of air on the floor on this one and it comes off and say I'm going, it goes down. That would go back to the boiler, it might go to downstairs. If this was upstairs and then we can see the return again, it's separate to the floor, it goes down, let's say Zane on the return of the other radiators. And again that would go back downstairs or some of the. In this particular case I got the apprentices to partner, so I got them to pipe it in different materials just to give a bit of experience. So they've got a bit of experiencing soldiering and they've got some experience with CrossFit on copper and then speed set, which is pushed back. And then they've got some experience with MLC pay pipe as well. So that should two pipe heating system and that should different materials that you could use to pack it up. What we'll do now, we'll have a look at one pipe 18 system and we'll see how it compares with a two pipe system. If you've got any questions on the two pipe Peyton system, please ask them in the comments below. And now we'll have a look at a one pipe system. If you were looking at one pipe system, so pipes come up, fruit flower box, one pipe system. You could easily mistake thought for a two pipe system, but this is what one pipe system would look like under the flow balls. Sometimes you might see it running around skirtings especially in bigger properties. Um, but not the domestic industry on the floor. So it might be a little bit hard to say. It's a one pipe system. Sometimes you might have to lift the flow boat up just to have a quick look and what you'd be looking for. You've been looking. If it's got say and it thought say connects into the radio on the other side, I'm just assuming and just show you that there. So if it connects them on the other side so we know the, the flow and the return above connected together. So we've got one pipe system you would still have lack of flow. I never turn that would come out of the boiler but that flow me turn would just link together. So it would just come out of the boiler, go run the heat and circuit. And then back to the bowler. Can you use 15 mm on the 2 pipe heating system all around with out using 22 mm for the main pipe on the flow or return then reducing to the 15 when you join in the radiator ?

Great Video Alan. I have just fitted some new column radiators and I currently have a Worcester 8000. My question is when you pressurise the system where would you expect the water to enter the radiator first, the flow or reverse side. Thank you in advance
Good instructural video. Iv never really understood why the different systems are used tho. I’m a landlord and Iv learned that a standard combi boiler is the best. I bought a house once that had all the water pump and hot water cylinder etc. I ripped it all out and even got some money back from the cooper and cylinder. I cudnt believe how much copper is used too. I then laid 2 circuit piping. I love the idea of turning the hot tap and getting instant hot water. A salus wireless thermostat finishes it off nicely.
A standard combi is NOT BEST, Different situations need different solutions. Thanks.

Excellent video Allen! Is it simple to upgrade the heating controls for a y plan system that has a manual valve for hot water/ radiators, a manual tank thermostat, and a Randal 103 mechanical timer and no room thermostats? The boiler is an ideal classic (about 30 years old) or would you recommend upgrading the boiler and entire central heating system controls?

lovely stuff here professor. how do they pipe the rads you see in some new builds where they take a 10mm pipe feed? do they run back to a manifold? how far can you run the small pipe before it reaches thermal capacity? could you even just reduce the flow and returns at the boiler down from 22 to 15 or even 10mm bore? thanks

Great video and explanation. I have just moved into a new house which has a one pipe system and immersion tank. I am looking at getting a combi and upgrading to a two pipe system. Is this quite an expensive/difficult job to do?

First off, thanks for a very clear explanation of the possible designs of the central heating systems ;
So a rather specific and bizarre question.
I have moved into a house where, because the floors are concrete and I cannot raise the floorboards to look, I can’t tell whether it’s a one pipe or two pipe system.
At some point in the past a radiator was removed in one of the rooms, because the owner at the time wanted to do something different with the wall. (I haven’t all the details.)
Someone, a plumber or just a DIYer, therefore connected the two pipes (the flow and the return) directly, without a radiator.
It seems to me, that in the case of a one pipe system it probably wouldn’t matter much, but in the case of a 2 pipe system, that this would mean that much of the hot water would be directed straight back to the boiler and make the system inefficient. (the missing radiator is, i think, near the beginning of the loop.)
It also seems to me, that simply to cap the two pipes (flow and return) would be far more sensible in the case of both types. (1 & 2 pipe systems)
What do you think?
The other option, of course, is to install a new radiator, which I may do eventually.
In that case, how do I know which is flow and which return, and does it actually matter? I would expect to install a radiator with a thermostatic valve connected to one or the other pipe.

You are right, doesn’t matter in a 1 pipe system. Even is a 2 pipe system that pipe that has been connected is the smallest of rad in the world. But again I wouldn’t like to do the maths to find out the costing or efficiency or lack there of. If you ate putting a rad in the future again it matters not which is F & R just make sure your stat can do both as some are dedicated flow.

Is there a recommended configuration for the flow and return pipes? Your video shows the flow and return pipes with tee off to one rad at a time. Is it ok to have the flow or return with a tee feeding 2 rads or would this cause a bottleneck? I can see it may be ok for the feed but may be a problem with the return. Thanks in anticipation.

I have moved into a new house (new to me, not new, but only about 15-20 years old). Can you help me figure out what type of system I have?
I seem to have a boiler plus a pump and a valve in my boiler house. In the hot press it looks like another valve and the water tank looks electric (when it calls for heat a red light comes on in hot press - this is separate from the hot water boost switch). No water tank in loft.
The wires are as follows: blue and brown from boiler and pump, red and black to room thermostat, red and black to hot water upstairs, and then brown and blue from valve (I can only see the wires for the one near boiler).
I have a Nest installed, how should I handle the hot water?

I have a f and e system and trying to work out the flow and return in the hot water tank cupboard
I take it both will be in there
There is 3 coming down from the loft and pipes around the tank with a motor and 3 way valve
On the boiler end this is a ideal one the pipes all come out the top of it and they are all boxed in at the top so couldn't fit the filter there
Reason I'm asking is I've had to replace the 3 port valve and during this lockdown and had to clear the system of sludge by taking the radiators off and flushing them but ended up replacing 4
The system has cleaner in it just now but was thinking of fitting a filter so need to work out the return to fit it

Hi Alan - a bit of advice if you could please. My son has just got the keys to his first house and the installed central heating system has me scratching my head. In 1968 the original system was installed as a single pipe system running off a coke fired stove / back boiler. There may have been more than one incarnation of this system over the years but more recently when a combi boiler has been fitted a two pipe system has been merged with the one pipe system. The first two radiators from the boiler are on a two pipe flow and return whereas the rest of the system is on a one pipe system. Is this likely to cause any problems with flow to the one pipe system since the first two rads are providing a short easy return to the boiler.
i had a 1 pipe system and I just introduced a stop valve inderneath in the middle of each radiator and just slightly restricted the flow so more went through the radiator depending on how hot you wanted the radiator to be , and I had no problems ever with it for 20 years but I was always told that system is never used now but I stuck with it and I even sold the house with it still in with no problems

Hello Alan I have a one pipe system in my house, the radiators near the boiler are red hot, and some downstairs are barely warm, I would think at the end of the run. Can you balance a one pipe system by turning down the lock shield valves, or will this only work on a two pipe system ?.

Hi Allen, brilliant video. I’m trying to figure out why my house won’t get hot water without the radiators being on. In summer it’s a nightmare. Any clues where I should look first? My underfloor, central and hot water all have different thermostats on the wall but no combination seems to fix it! Now I’m going to check for my y and s valve 😂

Will most modern Combi's support the underfloor heating system (and the pump it uses)? Assuming the GF underfloor is on a zone with a 2 port valve and the upstairs radiators are also on a zone with a separate 2 port value. Each zone has one or more thermostats to activate the 2 port valve and boiler?

Hi, can you answer a question for me please. I have a duel zone combo heating system.
When draining the radiators down, and refilling pressure in boiler I am getting no water from bleed valves but pressure says 1.5 bar.
Do the zone valves have to be opened before bleading and how do you do this without turning heating on?

Great informative video. This may be a repeated question so sorry in advance. Regarding side for fitting TRV I'm with fitting to supply side even if a bidirectional unit , I see that you have fitted to supply side. Would you say it is best this way if so whats your thoughts on this? We are moving to a large house and most rads have TRV on return and so I think this is stopping down stairs heating up at the same time. Upstairs rads could be stealing the hot water. I've balanced all the rads, I think 15 rads in house. The upstairs heats fast downstairs take forever! I'm thinking of changing at least all upstairs TRV's to supply side to see if helps downstairs rads heat up faster. I've flushed out system and removed rads to flush through as the system was very sludged up. The house has been inherited. Cheers Allen

Hi all Just had a new combi boiler put into my flat with new radiators the gas fitter fitted the boiler but when he went to fit the radiators he gave me a shout saying bad new you only have a one pipe system in the flat some I'm going to have to put in new pipes to make it a 2 pipe system so it will work with the boiler extra 1.200 would this be right or could it have worked on the one pipe system, thanks

Hi, Let's say we put 2 zones on a wood boiler for a house of 100m2, 1 night zone 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms + 1 day zone à big living room with an open kitchen. Boiler would be a cooking stove between kitchen and living room with visible flamme. With 4 radiator in the night zone and max 2 radiators in the day zone.
22° in the house approx. How much electricity the pumps of the central heating are consuming ? I mean approximately, knowing that it could go more or less depending on more or less cold weather. How long the pumps are running per day approximately... That I can calculate my electricity consumption...

Hi, does the d(T) on radiators aggregate? By this I mean, if your water loses a bit of heat at radiator 1, then does that carry over to radiator 2 so the return temperature lowers again, and so on? Or is there one overall loss to show the overall drop?
Edit: I think I'm getting my own answer here - the point of the two pipe is that the hot water is only used in one radiator before it gets returned - so by definition there is no aggregating loss in a two pipe system and hence you can work out d(T) on a single radiator. If I'm wrong, someone tell me!
