  • My 1990 Corolla rolls over to 400,000 miles with the original engine and transaxle. I bought this car in 1999 for $2,800 with 122,000 on the odometer and never dreamed it would still be running, and running well, 21 years later. And with the same engine and transaxle! This car has saved me a lot of money over the years.

    That’s a beautiful corolla. I got rid of my BMW X5 two years ago for a $2K 99 corolla since I started commuting a lot and Peking in very dusty industrial sites. By far the best car I have ever driven.

      Wow! That's great. How many miles on it? When I was in college (early 80's) I was driving my Dad's old Corona Mark II. It was a straight-6 automatic. Great car. I think it was a '72 or so. Unfortunately a hose sprung a leak and I fried the engine with 250k on it. That car would probably have still been running too otherwise.

    Corollas are great cars. My 2010 has over 108K miles and I plan to keep it forever. Corollas, and many used cars, have jacked up prices (with Toyotas in high demand). For example, in Carfax, a 2013 Corolla that was in an accident but fixed, 3 plus owners, over 150K miles, was priced over $12,000! My 2010 Corolla was purchased in 2015 for $14,000 with only 17K miles, one owner, no damage (it was a city car). Car was paid off 2 months ago and I am taking care of it as if it was my own son (car's name is Dark Shadows). I hope your sweet red Corolla lives forever.

    What a georgeous specimen of Japanese engineering and production. I had the wagon version of this in the same red. The Tampa, Florida sunlight turned the red into a pink and one day the injector drivers in the computer would not fire the injectors. There was plenty of fuel pressure at the rail, and there was bright spark at the end of each wire. But sadly I had to junk the car at a repectable 254K miles. Nice video, sweet memories of the car that got me though school. I delivered pizza with the car and beat the hell out of that 4a-fe engine. I have been a permanent Toyota fan ever since. And, don't tell anyone, but I currently work for Mercedes-Benz..... shhh. Hush! I know.....

    This video is so cool. I had one Red like this one. Mom got it new in 92. In summer of 98 I recleared it since it was given to my older sis that got married. Then in 2007 my sis gave it to me, speedo stopped working as I got it at 183k miles. I painted it 2 tone. Then, 2009, Sold it to my neighbor that I felt bad for and needed a car (wish I hadn't) and she sold it in 2015. Well Feb. 2019 went to junkyard for some parts on my Solara and there was my 92 Corolla, I was shocked, so sad.* Mom sold her 98 Corolla Apr 2020 with over 283k miles, was running strong. Great Cars indeed.

    • @MTMiser
      @MTMiser  4 роки тому +3

      I feel your pain. I couldn't imagine seeing this car in a junkyard. Sometimes I wonder about the people who sold it to me and wonder what they'd think if they saw it now. It was a strange buying experience. A young guy showed it to me, and both he and his girlfriend were on the title. They wanted $3,200 for it and I offered $2,800, not because I thought there was anything wrong with it, but just trying to save some money. He called his girlfriend and she immediately agreed. It almost seemed like there was something negative associated with the car for her and she just wanted it gone. It did have one strange thing wrong with it - all the weather stripping in each door and on the trunk lid were torn in spots. I often wondered how it got that way. Other than that, the car was perfect. I drove it like that for years, then replaced all the weatherstripping about 7 or 8 years ago.

      @@MTMiser Weather stripping, strange you say that. I painted the 92 1st in 1997 when my sister got the Corolla. Soon after she claimed the trunk leaked water after a good rain in N. Colorado. She eventually came to north TX still leaking and when I got the Corolla a few years later, trunk never leaked on me here in South TX. All those years my Sis said it was when I painted it in 97 that I messed up the weather stripping.

      @@ryanmendezz1524 Sorry for the late reply. I don't know why I sometimes don't get notified of comments being made. Anyway, it's hard to answer that question. One reason I kept this one so long is that pretty much everything in it is manual. Door locks, window cranks, transmission, etc. All manual. If it had an automatic transmission I may not have kept it this long. I've had bad luck with transmissions, although they weren't Toyotas either. So I don't know. Also, is the Camry a v-6 or a 4 cyl.? I am partial to 4-cyls. But just guessing, if it's an automatic I'd probably sell it and get one with fewer miles on it - used. I don't buy new. Never have. It's not a terribly difficult job but it does require removing quite a few parts and being very careful to get the new belt on without changing the position of the pulleys, so you don't end up with a timing issue. I always replace seals while I'm at it, and I'm partial to Gates belts as I think they are really good quality. Best of luck getting it done.

      @@relax9086 The manual recommends inspecting the transaxle for leaks every 24 months or 15k miles for cars that are used in light duty situations, but there is no recommendation to replace the oil, surprisingly. For those that are used to pull trailers, are driven frequently in freezing temperatures, are driven frequently in dusty, muddy or salty road conditions, are frequently driven at low speeds or are idled excessively, it recommends replacing the gear oil every 15k miles or 24 months, whichever comes first. As I said in the video, mine had nearly 400k miles on it before I ever changed that, and the transaxle still works great. As far as how to do it, jack it up, remove the plastic cover below the transaxle and you should see a 22mm drain plug on the side of the transaxle near the bottom of it, and a fill plug that looks identical to the drain plug about half way up the side of it on the front side. In this video where I changed the axle, you can see the drain plug (when I removed the axle oil flowed out and went down the side of the transaxle over the drain plug). It's at 3:29 in this video: ua-cam.com/video/AXGmBvTQL-8/v-deo.html If you do replace it, it takes 3 liters of 90w gear oil.

My husband was using it as a work car and the transmission went out in 2018. • @MTMiser
      @MTMiser  3 роки тому

      Hi Chanika - it depends. Is it a manual transmission or an automatic? And if you repaired it, would you be taking it to a mechanic or would you or someone in your family be doing it yourself? If it was mine, which is a manual transaxle, I'd see if I could find a used transaxle to put in (doing the work myself). If I had to pay a shop to do it, I'd probably junk it or sell it for parts and get another used Toyota. Also, if the used transmission was more than a few hundred dollars, I probably wouldn't do it. The value of my car wouldn't justify putting a bunch of money into it. But mine is a '90, and probably worth less than $1,000 even if it's running well. Yours probably isn't worth much more than that, maybe $1,500 with that kind of mileage? Or less. If you decide to get a different car, you might try selling the Corolla "as is" for $500 or so. Best of luck.

      No - the clutch is not original. However, in 25 years and 312k miles since I bought this car the clutch has only been replaced once (in 2004 or 2005?) and is still working great today. I'm not sure if it was replaced in the 122k miles that were put on it before I bought it, but I doubt it. When I said the internal parts were original, I was talking about the pistons, rings, valves, bearings, cams, crankshaft, oil pump and that sort of thing, internal to the block and head. A clutch is something that will always wear out on any car and eventually need to be replaced - like alternators, water pumps, starters and that sort of thing, which have all been replaced at one time or another on this car as well. The clutch assembly part of the a/c compressor broke once and I replaced the entire compressor unit, early 2000s. I had to replace the radiator twice due to leaks, and also replaced the muffler once. The internal parts of the transaxle are all original except for the right-side axle seal. Both axle shafts have been replaced (once each) due to CV joints wearing out. Also the front windshield was replaced once due to pitting.

      There are some small coolant hoses behind the engine (between the engine and firewall). I'd bet one of those is leaking. They are kind of a pain to get to, and it might be necessary to pull the intake manifold to access them. There's also a bypass thermostat on the top of the engine, driver's side, that could be leaking. It mounts with a gasket but when I fixed my blown head gasket I removed that thermostat gasket and reinstalled the thermostat using Toyota sealant, which is amazing stuff. Hasn't leaked a drop since (5 years).
