  • Knitting Poppies for Remembrance: Quick and easy project
There are many reasons to knit a poppy this year. You may have some red yarn that could use a worthy project, perhaps you prefer a softer version of the iconic flower, or maybe you want to avoid the plastic waste that comes with the commercially produced items.
This is a quick and easy free pattern that you can use to knit a poppy this year. Dig out that yarn - you will need some red and some black. Not a lot of either - it will depend on the size that you are making. Choose needles appropriate to the thickness of yarn that you are using (the ball band, if you have it, will give you a good idea what to use). Thicker yarn and larger needles will create a larger poppy, thinner yarn needs thinner needles and will create a smaller poppy. No right or wrong here - use what you have.

Start with the yarn that you have. Thin yarn will need thin needles and will make a small poppy. Thick yarn will need thicker needles and will make a thicker poppy. Try a bit of test knitting, if it turns out loose and floppy then try a thinner needle, if your test is thick and stiff, try a larger needle. there is no right or wrong, just make a fabric that you like! for reference, the poppy in the video was knitted with aran weight yarn on 5mm needles.

Hi Jane - I'm not sure that I understand what you mean by 'add the black on to 10 stitches', but if it works for you and looks good then go for it! Post a picture and show us what you have done. Best of luck.

@The Yarn Genie On the returning row the first 2 will be the last 2 pearl, do you start with knit or do you do the same as pearl ? Are the returning stitches always on to of the same stitches please?

When you are working a rib like this poppy, the rule is that you knit the Vs and purl the bumps! So that means that if the stitch was a purl on the previous row, you will knit it on the next row (the other side). If a stitch was a knit on the previous row, you will purl it on the next row (the other side). When you look at the stitches that you are creating, you will see columns of Vs appear and columns of bumps. When you look at your work, pull the bumps and knit the Vs. I hope that helps.

@The Yarn Genie. What size needles please? And I’m guessing it’s double knitting (DK) wool?

@@annekeating4098 Hi, You can use any yarn weight / needle size that you choose - the thicker your yarn/needles the larger your poppy will be. The poppy in the video was made with Aran weight yarn on 5mm needles.
