Apps are great solutions to streamline processes that are often lenghty or cumbersome. Apps SUCK in the atempt of trying to replace face-to-face interaction. They should be illegal for that purpose. That’s why kids don’t know how to properly speak or look in the eyes anymore, physical interaction is important and develops many good things.

The Southwest Airlines one I took personal. Every other airline encourages social hierarchy. At southwest you board the plane & sit amongst the people. No hierarchy.
I've done a lot of flying. Some up the front of the plane, some in a middle seat on a red eye. Expensive airlines, cheap airlines, high tier status, average joe comrade class. I've covered all of it. Say whatever you want about hierarchy and loyalty perks, or basic service at an accessible price point... All of that is marketing, you're free to buy into whatever version of that resonates best with you... At the end of the day, the only reason your butt is in that seat is because you've got somewhere to be... For me, there is no seat so cheap or so comfortable that I'd rather be in it for a minute longer than absolutely necessary, or that I'd be willing to deal with hours of back to back delays in boarding, or last minute itinerary changes that add a layover etc. etc. Any airline, including but not limited to southwest, that can't get their shit together to provide a consistent predictable operational core product can and should fail, fuck em. The consistent "fuck you, you'll arrive when you arrive" service offering of many airlines is so much more dehumanizing than using ticket classes as a marketing/efficient allocation tool.
I am a similar age and also giving up on some of those items. I am not giving up hats and shorts, and feel like that line in Hamilton from King George applies to you, You'll be back.
I love the spirit behind this. As an Australian who moved to Canada (which is influenced by American fashion) I am 100% with you on fighting the creep of socially acceptable slobbery by dressing with self respect. However, I don't get how common the anti-short sentiment is. As someone living in California you must understand that shorts are often a necessity, not a fashion choice, especially somewhere like Australia, and there are many dignified options made of natural fabrics. The same goes for some people writing off sandals - nice leather sandals or huaraches can be worn with dignity.
6:45 as one of those in the section of gen z not old enough to remember pre-internet, but definitely old enough to remember pre-iphone-app, YES. “Having an app” is not a valid excuse for shitty irl interface design, it’s not an excuse for lack of signage, and it almost universally worsens my experience being a human. Can I personally recommend for you to wear a hat or some sort of head coverage. In terms of protecting from the sun, avoiding the sun altogether is the best form of protection, but obviously not possible especially in SoCal. Sunblock (with zinc oxide or some other chemical forget) is helpful, but clothing or something that covers you is the second best option. I just had someone I know pass away from melanoma on his head. I knew him from playing soccer. I was a kid at the time and he used to volunteer referee at the club I played at and was bald even back then, twenty years ago at this point. He refereed games all day on Saturdays and I don’t remember him ever wearing a hat. Sunblock/screen sure, but that only goes so far no matter the SPF and how often you reapply. It’s a bandaid solution. Avoid exposure by blocking with coverings or go inside/in the shade.
Im 23 and still have that same distain for apps😂 Another thing that bothers me is the amount of places that don't accept cash near me. Its usually smaller places so they don't have to have change on hand, but if I can't use my money to buy goods this whole system feels broken. Maybe this is a local thing, I live near Toronto. I feel like I'm going to be that crazy old guy with all his cash burried in his yard😂 Great vid as always🙌

I then got to sit on the bench and watch the clouds go by for a few minutes while everyone else sat silently on their phones rating the nothing that had happened yet.

I'll be 29 on the 20th of July. So the 30's are practically here, but somehow the things that's on your list are on mine. I've always joked that a leg injury I got in 2022 turned me go from 26 to 62. Which means the things I use to do are no more. No, I'm not limping around, I healed ok. Its just it made me aware of how fragile the human body is, and that I don't have to keep putting my body through extreme measures for mediocre results. From there everything else has changed. I no longer book motels, just because they are cheap (this is due to many reason, but after seeing a used condom on the side of the bath tube I was over it). I stopped "dressing my ag." Even when I wear casual clothes I wear vintage polo shirts (stuff that 90s dads wore) and I tuck them in, why, because Its cool. Of course, there is more, but i have to shut up, because the one rule that im working on is "be a man of few words", and I broke that just now lol.
idk im like half your age so I understand that you'd be done with most of these things, but I love it because most of these delays or detours add to the human experience in my opinion

This is gold, my spirited brother
Van Neistat putting up some quality content here. Nice
This is what I come to UA-cam for. Love this.
idk im like half your age so I understand that you'd be done with most of these things, but I love it because most of these delays or detours add to the human experience in my opinion
Mine most recent was “I will never step into a laundromat again”
This cracks me up and I agree with a lot but I'm a sucker for sandals almost anywhere in every season.
Monday morning is off to a great start
I was raised in Connecticut as well. You are soooo right. I only go back to visit. Never live there again.
I'm here for all of this!!!!!
Great video, thank you :)
I'm with you on alot of these. Some I'll never have to never do again because I've never done them nor will I. But its a pretty good list.
This one is one of my favorites 😅 I identify with this and will be making my own list of never agains!
Dignity and snobbery !❤
this is the greatest video you have ever made. I feel heard. thank you.
Good points 👍
the app thing got me. Couldn't agree more.
😆I couldn't agree and disagree any harder! lol love yea man
03:37 “no more making my own pizza” …
Respectfully, Van, if your pizza is worse than the pizzeria, that’s on you. We know exactly what goes in our pizza and it’s delicious and 1/3 the price of the pizzeria that uses canned mushrooms! 🤦♀️
My local bar has not taken cash since Covid.
Scam, I will never return
You make me think. I appreciate that. Thanks.
I quit doing my own oil changes years ago due to the same reasons. Just not worth the time. Another thing I have given up, Ads. I am done with ads. If there is an option or service that can remove ads, I do it. If I am not willing to do it, then I don’t use said service.
Shoutout John, who I met last weekend at Shakey Graves and is another spirited man. Hope you liked Beau!
i love your work man
Fun video but all the clothing stuff is pretty snobby. Does it not get hot and sunny where you live?
Lmao this is fascinating and I want to see him and Casey discuss a couple of these which I imagine would lead to quite “spirited” disputes
Loved this
"I will smoke a cigarette when a friend or loved one has died." Amen to that. It's the little exceptions that separates dignity from snobbery.
haha love it, no eating here in Hiong Kong or China without the QR codes my man
Most of those things I already don't or have never done. Completely agree with the dislike of places requiring QR codes and Apps. I also never give phone number, email or sign-up for any bullshit reward memberships at any stores. "No thanks" or "Nope" have become my most common responses to cashiers these days. I never use self checkout.
This is probably the funniest Spirited Man to date.
I'm turning 47 this year and have adopted many of these, love it!
I stopped counting after 45 (pro tip)
Back to the motorcycle tire changes, did you ever investigate a tubeless setup?
Great list. It's amazing how much freedom one gains by just saying no. Oh, and just imagine how many things you'll quit when you hit 60...
The Spirited Man is my Spirit Animal.
These are all reasonable, most of which I also do not do.
Two on my list that you didn't mention:
1. Graphic Tees that I didn't design myself.
2. Wear another man's name on my clothing unless it's the name of the company I work for and only while being paid to do so. (Example: sports jersey with the player name on it).
No, he’s just someone you admire and relate to.
