INTJ, 5w6, with strong Fi here: Michael, the clarity with which you explain the workings of the psyche, within each type, is CRYSTALLINE and, frankly, jaw-dropping in its depth.

Yay someone who understands ESTJ's Fi! We care deeply! And we usually put everyone ahead of ourselves, that's why we push for success to the greater good for all of those around us. If anything we are the ultimate helper, looking to build people up to become better then they realised they could be. Those that see our disconnect between feelings and motivation think we are cold, when really were being selfless and not considering even our own feelings. Because we don't put feelings and motivation in the same basket, we are about productivity in the here and now for the greater good of all. Positive feelings are the end result when we succeed at the task, like the topping on the cake. Then one day our Fi comes out like a tidal wave of emotions, and people change how they once saw us, and they no longer see a cold person but a deeply caring person.

This fits perfectly with my own experiences with ESTJ's. Very enlightening at some points as well.
One thing I've found is that an ESTJ with ADHD can be pretty much impossible to type. I have a collegue like that and he doesn't fit the sterotypes that well, but the functions perfectly. Atypical traits are ristk-taking behaviour, responding before actually having made the decision and appearing to have higher Ne than Si (on the surface level). It was an adventure to try and type him.

Getting to know about psychology, especially cognitive functions, makes me think about how people are bound by conditions, by the environment. In a different world people would, so to speak, _work_ in a completely different way albeit their core motivations/inner working would be the same.
I know people don't like to be compared to machinery, but the only metaphor I can think of is how, say, a drill interacts differently with a wall or with water, or how a water pump simply doesn't work if there are no fluids to be drained, or how a drill and a extruder are more or less the same in shape but work differently in their own contexts, filling different roles.

20:28 Indeed, my ESTJ friend somewhat struggles between doing the thing he had the impression was right and what the arguments/logic/cause-and-effect-facts show to work, but Te usually wins quickly if he has to achieve results (if he is doing business or trying to do something effectively) although not without a shortly-present, but still existent, sense of discomfort.
"Nah, disregard that, I was just under the impression that's how things were for some reason. Doesn't matter, it is silly. If it works differently we will do it this other way. Yeah."
For my ISTJ cousin it is the other way around; the academic theory, the way he has been taught, the way he has consistently observed things to work bear more weight and he is more unwillingly to let it go, even if he gets convinced or simply decides to agree (for the sake of agreement) that sense of discomfort tends to linger far longer and probably only really vanishes still some time after he has seen the results to be proven to be different from what he initially considered they should be. On the other hand, I do know some ISTJs that would be more easily persuaded by such cause-and-effect facts than my cousin, people vary.
"Well, how is it supposed to not work like that in this particular situation if that is how people have (told me they have) done it in other similar situations? If you all are sure this way works better and I'm not in charge, I'll try that too, but I still believe that's not the proper way. Hmm..."
Blargh, I hate when my texts disappear and I have to write them again, I always rush and do it sorta unwillingly, it always comes out worse :P
From my (Se-Ni) perspective Ne-Si seems so funny, a world apart :D

“The Ti type is trying to block out unnecessary inputs to maintain their sanity”
As an INTP I can confidently say that we operate on the edge of sanity. I’ve had one major instance where I felt I had to totally reorder my framework of reality, and it honestly left a lasting impact upon me. It showed me that I am not immune to insanity, so to say that madness lurks around the corner for all humans. The depths of the soul are not without dead ends and hidden traps.

Super exciting and cool you built on your empirical interpretative idea. It's super weird though seeing you all explain things in completely different ways than I thought of (me having all functions different than INFJ's (INFP)), but still coming to conclusions that I can follow and think of as legit, it's pretty fascinating and fun. Just like ESTJ's actually, I don't even get why so many other INFPs seem to antagonize them. Well, I suppose I can get it, but these are not good enough reasons to me. Lol!
Jake Roper (Vsauce3) is a great example for an ESTJ by the way. I suppose you wouldn't need much more research after finishing this video though, but if you, Michael, or anyone reading this cares, check out his second channel for lots of more personal videos. 24:28 - 24:45 *BOOM.* Michael, I feel as if you did a mic drop on my brain. What a great analogy/explanation, this is a big help in guiding me to understand the function axes. Though, I also feel I greatly relate with every new type's 'Revisiting' video. To where it almost seems as if I'm shopping for what I could be (or use) as opposed to simply learning what others' minds are like. Do you have any insight as to why this happens and what I could do to truly settle/figure out what I am (so I can grow more effectively)? Because I've watched your 'Typing' series many times and instead of clicking or being bewildered by the categories, I really understand where everyone is coming from (what they do and why). Could this be a trait of being in one of the hybrid categories (Analog & Digital) as you mentioned? And thus I should study more there?

    • @MichaelPiercePhilosophy
      @MichaelPiercePhilosophy  7 років тому

Hey there: sorry it's been a month...But I figured I'd go ahead and try to answer the question anyway. I currently think that yes, its a trait more common to the "hybrid" categories to have an easier time understanding where others are coming from. And of the two hybrid categories, I think that the Ne/Si + Te/Fi category (NFP and STJ) is the most accepting in this regard, because not only are they more meticulous and circumspective in their perceptions (Ne/Si), something which is naturally adapted to seeing various perspectives rather quickly, but they are also particularist in their judgement (Te/Fi), meaning that things are each taken, appreciated and understood very much on their own terms, as very distinct, separate things from each other. Thus, the Ne/Si//Te/Fi category is best adapted for relating to other perspectives on an individual level. I often find it most in ENFPs. So...anyway, I guess I just guessed your type, but obviously its a pretty rough guess.

Oh my goodness. I thought I was done. But, yeah ... this sounds so much like me. Including that one of the reasons I prefer to stay home and watch movies, attend religious meetings and such, without the crowd is that I am very likely to get overwhelmed by emotions and cry like anything. Reading through Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in a row can be sheer terror because Jesus keeps dying at the end and that's a lot of murder and emotional pain to keep going through. So, I try to just read it as fact. But, that doesn't work either, because, it's not just cold hard facts.

  • @arlettasloan6453

My problem is that I am a lateral thinker who seems to be an ESTJ, INTP, ESTP, and ISFP. Which is to say, probably fully ESTJ or ESTP on one side of my brain and INTP or ISFP on the other side, with the others as a mix of using both sides at once. Some people have told me "You are just all over the place" and accused me of having split personality disorders. I am not. I have very concrete ways of thinking about different situations and its not my fault that sometimes I am dealing with 5 different situations at once. I was thinking ESTP was the one fully to one side. Now, I don't know. I don't even know if I would mostly be on one side or the other or mostly in the middle. And, I don't know that it matters, anymore. Except that I don't like people thinking I am lying, pretending to be one thing with them and something else with someone else just because I can enter into their feelings and fun.

I'm an ESTJ, done so many different MBTI tests, they all show ESTJ (some rare occasions ENTJ and ISTJ but mostly ESTJ). It corresponds so well to me its scary. Thats why work sees me as extraordinarily analytical and a problem solver that can solve any complex problem in very short time. I would say that the biggest flaw for me (and likely other ESTJs) is a bad temper, I get easily irritated when things are moving forward slowly and/or at peoples indecisiveness, or worst of all, when people make injust decisions or decisions based on sentimental values or too little facts (i.e. draw conclusions based on newspaper headlines).

The "how did it take you so long" thing to realize that I am not the criminal deviant you so me as or the law that prisoners are by default all bad people
It's the one thing that annoys me about Te as an INFJ. I have a mate who we were doing law together and the guy just swallows info given; no scrutiny, no analysis... It's like he's not "thinking". They are the more adept at knowing a lot of things written in the books but are not personal with the information, as if to brag to others that they know the stuff or be no. 1 in class

Fi doesn't necessarily drive Te, nor does Fe necessarily drive Ti (though it's just my tentative and unprofessional opinion) while the perceiving axes theory makes much more sense (though still can't explain why an Ni user can have a highly developed Trans-contextual-thinking which is simply inferior Si feeding the springy Ne and why it couldn't be related to high intelligence or a massive amount of knowledge). Although the function axes theory makes sense and paints a beautiful picture, possibly my own incompetence suggests that the fundamental idea needs to be explored more.
Ti is objective (unlike viewing I as subjective and E as objective) because others can scrutinise its validity without pertaining to any subject's interests.
Te is subjective because what comprises good depends completely on what the subject is intending to accomplish and thus, can't be scrutinised by third parties.
Now the case here is, you might assume that the aforementioned descriptions necessarily imply that both the functions are based on the opposite ends of their own axes but the question is, why do both Ti and Te base their underlying assumptions or the structure of their judgement on Fe and Fi despite the Thinking Extravert being more cognisant of the objective world (but for the sake of symmetry, being influenced by the unconscious and inferior Fi?) or despite the Thinking Introvert proclaiming, 'Cogito, ergo cogito' but then, trying to assimilate and reconcile its own subjective thoughts with objective values (for the same reason as above?)?
In fact, Jung spent more of Psychological Types talking about the things he thought extraverts had in common and introverts had in common than he spent talking about all eight of the functions put together; and in the Foreword to a 1934 edition of the book, he bemoaned the fact that too many people were inclined to view Chapter 10 (his function descriptions) as the essence of the book, while noting that he'd stuck those at the back of the book for a reason.
While it (the function axes theory in conjunction with the Harold Grant function stack) does make perfect sense to me, I've found the above model restrictive and suggests more about core motivations (at which the Enneagram does a better job) than an unbiased mode of cognition (at least the judgement axes are a bit controversial in that regard). I relate well to the Ti-Fe descriptions but can't help but feel as basing the decision making process on rationality implies that one cannot really have personal values to align objective data no matter which axis you prefer which does seem limiting. After all, it's just a matter of maturity and no one really knows what goes on in the amygdala or what really forms the basis of our biases or long standing beliefs which, when threatened, stimulate the same fight-or-flight responses when posed with a mortally dangerous situation.
If Fe operates with Ti and Te operates with Fi, doesn't the relatively undifferentiated functions leaking into the consciousness in unhealthy manifestations just suggest that one gets overpowered too much and in an unhealthy individual, the effect will be a neurotic one?
Also, Jung's own stack for a dominant Introverted Intuitive with auxiliary Thinking was Ni-Ti-Fe-Se and that for a dominant Introverted Thinking was Ti-Ni-Se-Fe and I definitely relate more to Ni-Ti-Fe-Se and the Socionics model G for INTP and you may think that it is an abysmally misinformed conclusion (though I admit I have been baffled and puzzled about my own type for 2 years). Though, I definitely relate more to Ni-Ti and Ti-Ni than Ni-Te or Ti-Ne and I assume that's the same problem Jung had (rather than being torn between Ni-Te or Ti-Ne and Myers carelessly extracted the idea of an auxiliary opposite in attitude from one sentence which, while a bold statement, doesn't overturn his earlier propositions discussed in the following link). Here's an excellent argument that tries to justify this claim : personalitycafe.com/cognitive-functions/298194-jung-attitude-auxiliary.html#post9293218
^What do you think about it?
As much as I love type dynamics and the Harold Grant function stack (check the 'discussion' section for the arguments and if you get time, I do want to know what you think about all this), I'm starting to believe that I've been misled and that the dichotomies are actually more fluid and richer (and definitely not failing to describe intertype relations or 'deep' things as much as type dynamics does) but I still do have to ponder more about it but admittedly, the case for the dichotomies is strong.
By the way, I'm not the author of those links (or most of the content of my comment on the 'discussions' sectiom. He's a vehement dichotomies guy but he has the reasoning, the sources and the data, having thought through many implications though I'm not going to blindly follow anything, neither the type dynamics nor the Grantian stack without submitting to rigourous logical scrutiny because eventually, one must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.
There's no question that some of the type-dynamics-related stuff in Myers' writings was disingenuous (Jungian "lip service,"), but it's suspected that she wasn't totally dismissive of some of the dom/aux stuff. It's important to remember, though, that she thought INTPs were more like their three fellow NT types than they were to ISTPs - so, to the extent that Myers believed in a "dominant function," she clearly didn't think it dominated somebody's personality to the extent that Jung did (or to the extent that today's functionistas would have you believe). But if you're talking about today's MBTI establishment as a whole, there's no question that it includes plenty of function-oriented people, including the well-known HaroldGrantians (e.g., Berens and Nardi). So you might say there's a bit of a war going on within the MBTI establishment, and that Reynierse article makes it pretty clear. Looking at official MBTI publications, I'd say it's pretty clear that the grown-ups are mostly in charge. But on the other hand, and as Reynierse disgustedly notes, Quenk managed to add quite a lot of type-dynamics nonsense into the 1998 edition of the Step I MBTI Manual - which represented a significant change from the more respectable (in that regard) 1985 Manual.
    As Jung saw it,
Si-doms were awkward, touchy eccentrics, detached from reality, who inhabited "a mythological world, where men, animals, railways, houses, rivers, and mountains appear partly as benevolent deities and partly as malevolent demons."
Not only does Jung's portrait bear little resemblance to a typical IS_J, I think anyone not inclined to treat Jung with too much reverence would have to agree that Jung's portrait bears little resemblance to any significantly numerous group of normal-range people who've ever walked the face of the earth. ... Jung broke with Freud in large part because he thought Freud wanted him (and others) to treat Freud's theories as a kind of religion, rather than having an appropriately sceptical and open-minded scientific attitude toward them.
If Jung was still around and became aware that, 90 years after Psychological Types was published, somebody was inclined to ignore all the improvements that had been made to his original ideas by Myers and others and was telling people they should be typing themselves based on his original function descriptions in Psychological Types (mysticism overloaded), I really don't think he'd approve.
As a side note, I love how you're evolving the presentation style of your videos, contrasted with the formulaic (nonetheless informative and useful) original type videos and I did find the 'Empirical vs Interpretative' and 'Kant and subjectivity' videos quite insightful. I also relate to Jung in how he says that finding the psychological type is quite the 'painful' question though I have good reasons to believe I am nearing a conclusion after 2 years of thinking about it! (I guess I'm slow and require a lot of time to process and investigate my insights). Moreover , I appreciate how much time and hard work you put in these videos which serve to enlighten and inform (interwoven with creatively and thoughtfully selected images, brilliant little jokes here and there and the ingeniously crafted stick figures), despite the humongous pressure of sustaining the expectations of over 10K people who are counting on you. For all of that, I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart (I would love to support you on Patreon but I'm sorry to say that I'm still a high school student and have no source of income of my own so I'll definitely support you once I get a job).

Ti is very subjective, Ti is a thinking focus at opinions and fiction. Ti is noo about truth or facts. All Ti rationality is forward to opinions and fiction.
Te is all about objective, truth, facts, Reality healm thinking. All The rationality is forward to that.
      That is it.

    My dad is ESTJ
As an ENTJ however, I can't help but notice.
After listening to both of you're entj videos 20+ times each,
you switched from us being almost inherently psychotic while vaguely mentioning our strengths to us being confused "gooey" yet overly and blindly ambitious people..
I am certain I just conquered the plastic bag @ 26

Are these Narcissistic? The all or nothing emotions - abilty to cut off emotions. Sense of humour and highly charismatic people. Success in business and driven but lacking in empathy. As an INFP brought more balance to my ESTJ partner, and she brought more objectivity to my life. This only works as long as the idealised fantasy persona of the partner of the estj, who is essentially seen as an extension of estj, does not exceed the boundaries of their expected behaviour.

This is such an INTP representation delving in his Si. Omitting Te logic and just going by using Ti.

Though INTP isn't the only type that uses Ti or even has Ti as a dominant function:)

Sorry, this was way too boring for me. Not really explaining their personalities and how they interact with others. Are you a INTP? So analytical!
