Swindon Town got religated two divisions for a fraction of the financial ilegularities that Man C are being accused of.
The word interesting here is "accused" they haven`t been found guilty of anything yet people are getting too giddy here including the clubs that instigated it.

Matt Slater is such an informative guy, seen him on a few channels now giving a great insight into the internal affairs of clubs and league associations. Great video.
Didn’t they only escape UEFA on a technicality? UEFA filed too late so it got dismissed. So they “beat it” by dragging it out, which can’t happen with the English FA.
All of those time-sensitive charges weren't even adjudicated. CAS went over all of uefa charges and didn't find any evidence of financial doping. City were fined for not cooperating with the initial uefa investigation.
@saewha ah yes, the media conspiracy. In reality, if you know about law (especially commercial), you'd know you can pay for top lawyers to get you off the vast majority of charges. And City have that money and did that

No, that's not what happened. An element of the case was time barred so wasn't even looked at but no findings were ever made on that part of it. It was just ignored. Everything under review turned up in city's favour though with UEFA unable to produce any convincing evidence for any of the allegations made. UEFA relied on emails that were also proven to be doctored in parts etc. UEFA failed abysmally to prove any of it after all their bluster, I wouldn't have been surprised to see City beat them on the time barred stuff too
Oil money gives them leverage whether it’s in the oversight of their club or litigation. Sadly there will be no justice I reckon,but I hope I am wrong.

Why has it taken so long for the PL, FA, Uefa & Fifa to take action?
Because Football is bent. The west is too scared to get tough with the east because we rely on their oil. Man city ethically have destroyed English football and the premier league has sold its soul.
From submitting the allegation date, FA only tracks back six years.

The reason premier League took action is only because they don't want an independent regulator snooping around at what dodgy stuff alot of prem clubs are doing now. So they needed to make an example of the biggest cheat to stop the regulators coming in.
guys, when theyre on the zoom call, invest in a decent mic for them all, and then get them to record it on there seperately, then they can send them off and you guys can sinc it up. Woud make listening so much more pleasant.
They won't take trophies off them because it's too far gone now but points deductions, relegation, transfer ban and huge fines are the more likely outcomes.

Frankly not taking trophies off of them says that you can cook the books and cheat for a decade and win titles and glory and in the end it won't matter other than getting a slap on the wrist as a write-off expense

If FFP was properly implemented then Man Utd,Liverpool and Arsenal would be the only teams to ever have any chance of winning trophies in England.
Smaller clubs have no chance. Their only hope is for FFP to be scrapped and hope for rich owners.

One of my only criticisms of The Athletic is the journalists for specific clubs (or reporters or correspondents etc) are also fans of that said club.

They only got away with it from CAS based on a statute of limitations that doesn't exist in the PL charges. Why does everyone act like CAS exonerated City?
And why did the PL put up with City stonewalling the investigation for the last five years? Clearly the PL CANNOT police themselves and an outside oversight body is probably called for.
You’re a melt. That’s factually incorrect. Yes the case was time barred. However, CAS said it wasn’t worth looking into things 5 years and beyond anyways because there wasn’t much there.

Actually, as an Athletic Subscriber, I find Sam's insistence on Man City being cleared by CAS to be untrue. They were fined 10-20 million and the case was concluded because the evidence was time barred. Journalists should be impartial.

Eras are normal - but if you can just buy anyone it clamps down on clubs being able to progress out of nowhere. Look at Arsenal under Wenger in the 90s/00s - minimal spend and suddenly competing again after a drought. Blackburn with Shearer. Newcastle coming 2nd. The last 15 yrs or so the correlation between money and league finish has been hand in hand

There is a punishment by simply being investigated, that being purchasing of players!! Who's coming to City on a 3/5 year deal when the player/players could potentially be playing in the championship or even league 1 within a year of signing with City? this applys to current players who are due a new contract!.
Only 4 players have contracts that are due for renewal in the next 18 months.

100 breaches, seemingly most minor technicalities regarding sending in detailed reports gladly and quickly. The only significant charges are regarding inflated sponsorship deals for example from Etihad Airways. Given the enormous success by Man City the deals were highly motivated. Lets investigate in the same hostile detail the other 19 teams for several years going back to 2009 or longer. Probably, you will find breaches by most/all of them.

The premier league wont want Man City to go along with Juventus, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Atletico Madrid to create the super league.
EPL needs an independent gov regulator who has no ties to the EPL and no incentive for any particular outcome. The potential for corruption in a self-governing body with the kind of money that’s in play is so ripe for abuse, it’s uncanny.
I think it’s a pretty safe assumption to say if any other club in the PL had the type of forensic financial investigation done on them thst City has experienced, every one of them would run afoul to varying degrees of at least 1 rule/regulation in the handbook. For the sake of propriety and to dispel any thoughts of double standards, there should absolutely be an independent gov regulator in the EPL specifically for situations like the one facing City.
Yet city are the only club in the “big 6” in favour of an independent regulator.

Im sure there is no chance for corruption in it at all and the white paper that was to be published tomorrow had nothing to do with the EPL trying to flex its muscles to...wink, wink..show that it could self-regulate. The EPL doesn't want regulators because they know they will be held to a much higher standard and scrutiny. One thing I do not understand is that The PL was not provided with data by City. How has this been allowed to go on so long ? How do these individuals know the details of the so-called misdemeanors ?

You failed to mention the consequences of this cheating had on other teams. The most obvious are Liverpool and Man United, they had titles stolen from them. And on 4 out of those 6 titles, Liverpool and United had a massive collapse the season after, which led to immense loss of revenue and subsequent spending in order to try to climb back. Furthermore, how many clubs missed out on the Champions and Europa League because City were unfairly in the top 4? The amount of revenue loss for those clubs and the impact is also huge. And given how bad City were before the Arabs, you can even argue that relegated teams were also affected.

@@diddyxl I don't even want United to get awarded those titles it's pointless. But they have to be stripped regardless of that, otherwise they'll have gotten away with it. Strip them of the titles, drop them to League 2, and fine them at least 500M GBP. That's what I believe they deserve. And obviously don't let them keep doing what they're doing.

Question nobody seems to ask: Why has it taken 14 years for the Premier League to get to this point? Surely if FFP audits do what they should be doing the PL would have seen accounting discrepancies, missing documents, and inflated sponsorships in 08/09, and every season after... Instead, they start an investigation in 2019 leaving City to seemingly do what they want for 10 years?

MC barely has any fans they won't do much for the ESL. I read that LP & MU global tv figures go up by 75% globally whoever they play & Arsenal viewing figures go up by 43%. MC's viewing figures are no more than So'ton or Fulham. So RM & Juve really want are the 3 most globally attractive Englush clubs, not MC.

For the wider good of the game in England, limits on pay and transfers etc would end monopolies and clubs being the playthings of ridiculously wealthy people and enterprises, and bring some financial sanity to the game. As for a Super League I'd guess it would die in childhood if national and international footballing bodies didn't recognise their legitimacy.
There are already limits on spending. The problem is when a club lies about what they are earning and spending to pretend to be within the rules. We need better enforcement before making more rules
We are going to investigate our biggest most powerful people: so are they investigating Chelsea for spending 600 million in 8 months

There is no way the Premier league would bring these charges if they didn't think they would win. City are really buggered here. The league need to show strength before an independent regulatory body is forced on them. The problem is by bringing these charges they are proving that under their watch City got away with dodgy dealings, so a regulator is required.

Really what is Financial fair paly in EPL in 1925 arsenal , Blackburn Rovers 1993, Chelsea 2003 to now, Man united (1991 on wards) Liverpool from 2014 onwards. or spurs or Everton or wolves no one going escape from Financial fair play regulation. What exactly do you imagine Liverpool have done?
This will only increase the likelihood of a Super League. Billionaire businessmen don't like the restrictions of trade which essentially is what FFP is, they want to exist in an open marketplace. The PL can eject City from their competition if found guilty, that is their right, but what they can't do is force City to play in the EFL even if they're accepted. City could simply walk away, which will only increase the likelihood of that European Super League that the American owners in particular were so desperate for. Be careful what you wish for Premier League because this could ultimately ruin your competition in its current form.

City breaching Financial Fairplay is ridiculous to me. Financial fairplay was put into place to keep clubs from overspending and going backrupt - which should be for clubs like Barcelona or Madrid who have a billion in debts and are still overspending. City is in no position to ever go bankrupt with their financial backing. I wished they would sue on a European level cause Financial Fairplay would never stand a chance in court. Governing bodies limiting an owner to invest into his company has always been ridiculous.
It won't go on for a year because you have to wonder what would happen if City were to win the PL and the CL, that could cause some serious problems.
Don't worry the refs will ensure nothing like that happens...

The Premier League say that City haven't supplied requested documents. City say that they have supplied a lot of documents. What City don't say is that they supplied all the documentation THAT WAS REQUESTED. As the Behaviour Panel say 'chaff and redirect'.

The last category should only be only a fining offence following the CAS fine. Maybe the Premier League think that they know better. 90% of people commenting on this matter have made up their minds and they will not be persuaded that we have to wait for the tribunal before judgement. The Premier League rule that they can go back as far as they want runs contrary to ordinary civil legal proceedings in which the limit is 6 years. Is that fair? Or is it disadvantageous to those who are ensnared? I don't agree with Matt's take on this one about when proceedings are allowed to commence..
For the ones saying "They shouldn't do X, Y and/or Z because that would be punishing the innocent fans", it's not the prem who'd be punishing the fans, it would be the city owners not giving a damn about rules and anyone else whilst cheating n therefore, it's the owners who dropped the punishment on the fans!!
Personally, if I was a City fan, the minute the club is found guilty,I'd be organising a protest against the owners to drive them out of the club.
Having said that, I've got morals n most city fans I've seen online since yesterday appear to have sold their morals for domestic league n Cup trophies.

To be honest? I think that Manchester City would use any loophole in existence, but obey the letter of the law, just without obeying the spirit of the law. Manchester City actions may be scandalous but I doubt they where illegal and I think the most plausible outcome is... Premier League updating their rules to close the loopholes City used.

The secret payments to managers and players, the clearly inflated sponsorship deals from state controlled sponsors, interfering with the PL's investigation-- these are the biggest of the charges and the ones most easily proved/disproved. If City are innocent then it would be easy to prove it, to be transparent and yet they actively impeded investigations into their dodgy finances by UEFA and the PL. The PL has been investigating them for FOUR YEARS and accuses them of 100 BREACHES. How can anyone look at all this (and it's just the tip of the iceberg) and act like City are innocent victims in all of this? Absolute delusion. City deserve to be relegated.

I am curious why their financial auditors have not brought this matter up earlier? If their financial statements are not perceived as true and fair view then shouldn't they have opened a query to offer a qualified opinion? I know FFP is totally a different body but holy hell, stuff like paying their player and manager out of contracts should've been caught my the auditors way way earlier.
It’s simple. Their evidence is faulty. They’re simply trying to make a statement and hope that one of these charges sticks so they can say “oh look we got them we don’t need regulators”. I’m susceptible to being completely wrong, just as anyone else is. But city’s confidence in this whole matter is incredibly reassuring. Sounds like wayy too many high level third parties would have had to have been deceived/misled

Without stripping them of titles won whilst any breech occurred, its all a bit pointless. A fine is just more money to them and a relegation would just mean they are away from the top tier for a season, small fry if they continuously cheated to win those titles.

Lets see if this implicates Chelsea, the club had a 1bn loan wiped off being owed to the Russian they cancelled the debt which in effect gave the club an advantage in FFP, as its part based on the profit and loss and balance sheet the cash may not be owed but the debt should be considered in FFP otherwise clubs will just right off debt to get round FFP and it’s unfair to clubs that cannot afford to right debts off. Or sell their clubs within the sale price offering the new owner an advantage in FFP by cancelling any debts, Man United new owners could look to do this and Liverpool to a lessor degree

Even if city are somehow exonerated, their image will never be the same. This club has been trying so hard to belong & have not been totally accepted as an elite & historical club in England & Europe. Their undoing was stating more revenue over the big boys (man utd, real Madrid, Bayern, barca, Chelsea, arsenal)....they are doomed either way.

I don't see how total revenue being higher is particularly surprising? Premier League is the only league to see a huge jump in TV revenue during covid. Only league with more international viewers than domestic. Puts them at a huge financial advantage over other big clubs in mainland europe. Consistently in the champions league knockouts and challenging for the league too when compared to domestic rivals. United can't stay in the CL and have the Europa league to show for the last decade. They're a club on the decline thus their new sponsorship with team viewer on less money than they had on the previous one

And a big fine is the only fair thing to do cause it isnt the players and manager’s fault and they (along with the fans) are the ones who will be hurt the most if they get any other punishment. They could be denied to buy players in a couple of years on top of the fine. The players wasnt even at the club when this was supposed to happen, and they are the ones who get punished. Whats fair about that? Shouldnt the ones responisible be punished. What if you lose your job because your boss or the owner of your firm has done something illegal?
If I'm not mistaken, some of the informations involved in the allegations between the club and the UEFA was illegally acquired by internet hack so they were inadmissible evidence to court. PL might have learned from UEFA's mistakes and therefore it is going to take them more time to acquire those informations legally.

First of all this will drag out in litigation no doubt. Secondly, they won't be relegated no matter how much we'd all take great pleasure lol I think a fine which is a drop on a bucket will be handed down, probably some sort of point deduction, then either a full on transfer ban or restrictions for a specific period of time. This won't be as bad as people are speculating unless they want to make an example out of City and just lay the wood.
Nope. The other clubs will demand severe sanctions against MC. They'll be relegated & stripped of everything. And when the PL is through punishing them, clubs who were robbed of glory, trophies, prize money & those that missed out on the CL will all sue them independently for hundreds of millions in loss earnings. MC are finished as a force in English football.

Teams like Leeds followed the rules when spending money poorly and ended up getting related and almost went bust as a club. But they followed the rules while taking chances

Leeds spent money they didn't have which was the root of their troubles. There are certain club owners that take billions out of the club whilst allowing the infrastructure of the club to rot and saddling them with a debt close to 600 million. That's all ok but City have an owner who has invested billions in the infrastructure of both the club and local area and castigated for it. But hey, that's how FFP works "for the good of football".
