Great showing, John. Got me envious with that Eddie Floyd LP. Total classic. Not to mention that Etta James. I don't see her records very often, at least very cheaply. Loved all the picks, frankly. Glad you jumped in on this. Always great to see great records! Cheers!😁
Wonderful tag! Great to see all those fab soul artists featured and Etta James mentioned. I have never heard of Ella Washington or Little Joe Curtis. I couldn't agree more about Prince's Purple Rain lp and it can also be considered a rock album. The guitar at the start of "Doves Cry" is very Hendrix-esque IMHO. The sample needle drops are such a bonus and a real treat to listen to in the tag. Enjoyed watching!
Thanks. When I include needle drops in my videos UA-cam always tells me that the songs are copyright material that I can use but that I can't monetize the video. But UA-cam didn't say anything about the Little Joe Curtis song. It seems even they don't know who he was. LOL Re: Hendrix and Prince. Listen to the ending of 'Jimi Hendrix - Johnny B. Goode' on UA-cam. It uses the same guitar solo that Prince would use at the end of Let's Go Crazy, almost note for note.
Hey John, enjoyed your tag. I agree that John (sixinchpainist) is the go to for soul in the VC. I was recently in vegas and popped into a record store called 'record city'. They has so many great soul re-issues that I almost copped but in the end I went for a few used records that I thought were better value in the states than they are in the uk. Psychedelic Shack - by the temptations was one that I walked around the store with for about half an hour before switching it out for staple signers and John mayall records. Soul will always be my first love in music. Ive slept around (musically) a bit since then but I always come back to the call of a soul rhythm section. Good to see you, I hope you and the fam are well. Been enjoying seeing your culinary delights in FB too. Cheers
Thanks Martyn, Soul never used to be my thing at all, but the VC has an affect on my listening habits. LOL. Actually James Griffiths kept prompting me with various soul artists, I'd pick up records by them just to hear what the fuss was about. I didn't get it in the beginning but eventually the penny dropped. Yep the family are all well thanks. Wifie has a new role at work that has put me out of business, so I'm not collecting many records these days, but it will pick up again eventually. All the best to you and your family. Cheers
btw, John, have you see the Cohen Brothers remake of 'The Lady Killers'? If not you definitely should. It's set in the American deep south and it has the most brilliant soundtrack and lots of amazing gospel performers in it.
Thanks Richard. I've only collected Soul records for just a few years. I was actually surprised that I could find so many records to show. Yesterday I made a video about albums from 1964 turning 60 this year. Do you have many LPs from that year? It must have been quite an exciting time to be alive.
Great response John, you picked some great sounding records. My goal for 2024 is to really amp up my soul collection. Don’t buy enough of it for some reason, but I’ll rectify that. A for effort on the Ruffin album 😁😁.Cheers.
Thanks Jack. My soul collection has crept up on me in recent years. I wasn't a fan, but then I kept 'giving it a go' and before I knew it I had quite a few Soul records. Cheers
I even have these lps, got a job lot somewhere at a bootsale or junk shop someplace ...😇some beauties in there, still have em' most of them, the best ones ...... and most all the reissues, pictures later......probably some on my channel right this minute.
Really enjoyed watching this John and I've done a Soul tag response myself,i just have to upload it. I also have the Jnr Walker album you showed at the start and Wilson Pickett shows up in my video and bugger me so does the fantastic Geno Washington 👍👍👍
Billy Paul's version of Your song was on the 1st Philly Int LP 360 degrees of Billy Paul and also B side too Me and Mrs Jones 7" single . I saw him twice live , Hammersmith and 2 days later California Ballrooms ,Dunstable ( £1.50 a ticket for 3 top acts ! ) in the O'Jay's ,Billy Paul and Intruders tour of 72 or 73 . Your song was Billy's the last song of his session and encores ,like 4 encores . Absolutely brilliant ending ,bought the house down . Saw Hot Chocolate live too at Hammersmith 1973/74 . Not a Soul group at all but not bad . Loved the Etta James and Ella Washington's LPs and are new to me so thank you for that . I can't listen to Prince , means nothing to me and lost how he was so popular IMO of course , might be an age thing .What ever floats your boat though . Nice selection there John .Thanks again .
Good effort John. I love Etta James though I only have one album by her, a reissue of Tell Mamma which was from the sixties. The one you have there is much more modern sounding, and more obviously 'soul' - her early stuff is more like blues. I've never been able to find a vinyl copy of Lady Soul by Aretha. By the way, it's Junior Walker, rather than JR Walker.
Thanks James, it's partially thanks to you that I have any Soul records to show at all. A few years ago I actually had a wodge of Soul records in a stack ready to send to you as VCLT but you managed to convince me to keep giving Soul another try....and that wodge slowly found it's way back into my collection along with others that I had collected to test your theory that Soul could actually be enjoyable.
Not a tag I could participate in as Soul has never been my bag - probably only own 1 or 2 albums that could be classed as Soul. So well done mate. The Etta James needle drop sounded pretty good. Cheers..Pete
David Ruffin left/was fired from the Temptations before 'Cloud Nine' was released. His replacement was Dennis Edwards. Dennis is also is the lead on 'Live at the Copa' and numerous subsequent releases including the historic and iconic 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone'. Your background artist was known as 'Junior' Walker, not "JR". Cheers.
Very nice response video to my tag!! Thank you for sharing!!!!

UA-cam didn't call me out on using the Little Joe Curtis track in my video. Seems his stuff is copyright free.

I don't think I've seen the original, let alone the remake.
Now there's a gap!
agree with Mr Griffiths on that soundtrack. Great shout
Cheers. This has been one of my favorite tags. In general we don't see much of this in the vc.

I look forward to seeing your Soul video Nick, if only to confirm that I got the answers right. LOL

I'm certainty no soul expert .

Thanks Russ for your comment. I would have loved to see Billy Paul perform that song. Glad you enjoyed my video. Cheers

Good response there John. Soul isn't my cup of tea but it was interesting watch nonetheless and a good excuse to show some albums from the collection.
I sold one of the USA triple. 8ts box set for 300 sobs
And that was half the price, mint
