When I was in elementary school I was in the school's talent shot with four other kids singing one of their hit songs, this was when I was in the 3rd or 5th grade. I never seen the temptation in person just on TV. Fast forward to the mid to late 80's while a rookie police officer in Oakland California. I was dispatched to the Oakland Airport Hilton. for a disturbance. That's when I met Ruffin and Kendricks. Eddie was as cool as people said he was and spoke to me. Ruffin was highly unset and under the influence of something. Eddie then went to his room and Ruffin went to his and left.I felt blessed to have met them before they past.

Never heard that one before wow so many stories about David Ruffin a man that it seems like nobody really knew him but his best friends Eddie Kendrick, and Dennis Edwards, and Gena Ruffin the mother of his son and his original family. Consisting of his first wife and his 3 daughters, everything else to me seems like hearsay or people who didn't know who he really was but talk about things they heard. It's hard to know how he was in real life, although he did die of a drug over -dose and even in that case people watched a movie where he was pushed out of a car, and left at a hospital when in reality he was taken to the hospital by a limousine driver, and admitted into the hospital where he passed away of an overdose of crack -cocaine.

Another reason for David's firing, one that is seldom addressed, is that David was insisting that Motown be audited. Similar to boxing promoter Don King, Berry Gordy was a brilliant impresario and a shrewd businessman, but he was also very manipulative and exploitative of those who worked for him. I suppose he knew that if the label was audited, all of his artists would have found out that he had the capacity to pay them much more than they were making.

One thing is for sure: unlike today, these folks were quite talented, worked hard and their creativity impacted decades following. Honestly, I can’t expect the same for most of today’s pop music culture producers, unless standards continue to fall.

People like Teddy Pendergrass and Jeffrey Osborne, who were great vocalists, started out as drummers in their groups, and Aretha Franklin was a great piano player. In today's music, we're happy if they can just sing!

    • @MatteBlack2024

@@whitegoldiesinsidethemusic702 So, so true. And the singing back then was more times than not cultivated in the church - a true quality factory - me not on UA-cam. Additionally, singers were especially credited for their uniqueness, unlike today where too many performers regress to the means of who or what gets attention. It’s just crazy when you objectively listen to the astonishing range of difference among singers from the past versus entertainers today. We have standouts but not like in the past. The stories behind why so many great singers from the past did not blow up was because record companies thought they sounded too much like someone else are legion. Count among them Donnie Hathaway, for example, who was reportedly told he sounded too much like Stevie Wonder. Who could doubt Donnie sang his butt off but… Today, performers are literally groomed to sound like Beyoncé. It’s crazy. The standards are inverted and regressive.😳🤦🏽

I met Ruffin a couple of times in the 60s and I formed an almost instant opinion. He was arrogant and brash. He was a singer that KNEW he was good, and never missed an opportunity to tell everyone else he was good. You briefly touched on his relationship with Tammi Terrell. She was a person who I can't prove, but I would suspect either James Brown or Ruffin with being the reason she ended up with that brain tumor. Brown was very physically abusive with her I had heard, but I actually saw Ruffin hit her in the head several times. One project I would suggest that may have good results is that you do a piece on all the old R+B singers [besides Sam Cooke aka Dale Cook] who started out in Gospel Quartet and went to the other side... Guys like Bobby Womack, Lou Rawls, Wilson Pickett, and many others.

Based on everything we know of Ruffin, it seems like he'd be just the way you described him. As far as Tammi Terrell goes, we've heard and read similar things about her abuse at their hands. Supposedly Ruffin was somewhat guilty about what happened to her because he felt responsible. By the way, good project idea. Thanks for watching and listening.

I wish the Temptations with David Ruffin would have worked out their issues and stayed together. They could have been GREAT and solidified the ultimate statue plus highest level all musical groups in the future want to try to achieve. Instead of being just another dope up black musical group that was popular for a minute. It personally hurts my Heart.

I didn’t find the volume of the music to pleasant because the information that was being said was getting lost. • @temptin_temptations

That's not true. Otis never went to Richard about bringing David, or had the interest of Richard being a part of the group. Some of the things in his book are false. Otis first option was Jimmy but he was flat footed, as Otis says, and David had the edge because of his stage presence the night Al and Paul got into an altercation in October of 1963 at the Chappy's Lounge.
