Flying Pig: Uniform Circular Motion and Centripetal Force

  • We look at the geometry of the popular flying pig experiment. This is sometimes called a conical pendulum. Students might encounter this experiment when studying uniform circular motion. In this case, the horizontal component of a string tension provides the centripetal force and associated centripetal acceleration (v^2 / R). The vertical component of tension is equal and opposite to the force of gravity (the weight) of the pendulum bob, or piggy. We derive a scheme for calculating the acceleration due to gravity in terms of pendulum length (L), pendulum angle from vertical (theta), and the period of one orbit (t).
