    • @MarkMattsonPE
      @MarkMattsonPE  4 місяці тому

      Yes, that's the simplified version (which is also what I teach). For a unit weight of concrete of approximately 144 lb/ft, the equation in the Reference Handbook reduces to 57024 *sqrt(f'c) which is where the approximation you mentioned comes from.

    Hey Mark, thanks for your help. My question is on question number 4. When we do concrete batch plant inspection what we do is we just take 2% of fine and coarse aggregate, add up those values and minimize it from total water . By that calculation we get 207 which is answer A’ . So that’s wrong we been doing or what’s different in this question. Thank you again for your time.

    Problem 4: For the coarse aggregate, you write out 1725.3 - 1691.5 = (sic) 25.37 (102% - Oven Dry) to determine the extra water contained, but your calculation reflects 1725.3 - 1700 = 25.37 (102% - SSD). While on the fine aggregate, your calculation is 1560.3 - 1545 = 15.3 (102% - SSD). I'm guessing the calculation of 102% - SSD is the correct form. Coincidentally, if you calculate 102% - Oven Dry, 207 is the solution.

    • @MarkMattsonPE
      @MarkMattsonPE  2 роки тому

      Hey @Scott Simon, thanks for the comment... I actually wrote 1725.37 - 1691.54 = 33.83 lbs. In other words, there's 33.83 lbs of water when there's a 2% moisture content. That includes 8.46 lbs of water that is absorbed by the aggregate in SSD condition, and 25.37 lbs of excess water. I didn't write out the equation to get to 25.37 lbs of excess water (33.83 lbs - 8.46 lbs). The excess water is what we need to know so that we can figure out how much we need to reduce the mix water by. Thanks!

    Hi Mark, for the modulus of elasticity question at time 1:02:47, how did you decide that the obvious point of intersection was at 30,000 psi? If I would have chosen say 40,000 psi, I believe the strain would be 0.002. But if I choose that point my answer would be incorrect. Can you help me understand please?

  • @-andyzaz-
    @-andyzaz- 2 роки тому +1

    Hi Mark! For Problem 4, when considering coarse aggregate, you subtracted the oven dry weight from the weight of the water needed at 2% moisture content (1725.37-1691.54=33.83 lb). This step makes complete sense to me. What confuses me is why for fine aggregate, you subtracted the SSD WEIGHT from the weight of the water needed at 2% moisture content (1560.3-1545=15.3 lb) INSTEAD of the OVEN DRY WEIGHT (1560.3-1529.7=30.6 lb). Shouldn't the extra water for Coarse AND Fine Aggregate be calculated as (wt. needed @ 2%) - (Oven Dry)? If I am correct, the final answer would be 270 lb - 25.37 lb (C.A.) - 30.6 lb (F.A.) ~ 207 lb (Answer A). Let me know! Thanks for the great content.

    • @MarkMattsonPE
      @MarkMattsonPE  2 роки тому +4

      For both coarse and fine, we're trying to find how much extra water is included at 2% moisture above SSD. In essence you take weight needed @ 2% and subtract the SSD weight needed to see how much excess water there is.
      For the coarse aggregate, there is 33.83 lbs of water above oven dry and 25.57 lbs of water above SSD.
      For the fine aggregate, there is 30.6 lbs above oven dry and 15. 3 lbs above SSD.
      Does that help?

    • @robertrice3930
      @robertrice3930 5 місяців тому +1

      for anybody still confused on this It took me aa while to figure it out but 231 is correct. take the water required and subtract that value from the oven dry. (1560.3-1529.7=30.6) Subtract this value then from the ssd water. (1545-1529.7=15.3lbs) This is the value that was skipped. If you then subtract 30.6 and 15.3 you get 15.3 extra water. Add 15.3 and 25.57 for your additional waters and subtract from the initial water of 272lbs for the 231lbs answer he got. Hopefully this helps out a bit more.

      It depends on the use of the member. Repetitive and flat use are for bending. In that way it's much different than a homogenous isotropic material like steel. Best!

    Hello Mark, thanks in advance for your help. Question#4:What is the reason why when you are going to calculate the extra water in a coarse aggregate you subtract the 2% ssd weight minus the 1% ssd weight, instead of the 2% ssd weight minus the dry weight , in order to obtain the extra water weight. I don't understand why you don't follow the same idea for both aggregates? Thank you,

    • @1crida1
      @1crida1 Місяць тому +1

      Okay. I spent the time to follow Mark's method and I discovered a solution that's much quicker.
      Step 1) Coarse aggregate
      Weight, SSD @1.5% = (1,700 lbs / [100+(2-0.5)]%) = 1,675 lbs
      Water = 1,700 lbs - 1,675 lbs = 25 lbs
      Step 2) Fine aggregate
      Weight SSD @1% = (1,545 lbs / [100+(2-1)]%) = 1,530 lbs
      Water = 1,545 lbs - 1,530 lbs = 15 lbs
      Step 3) Total water
      Total water = 272 lbs - 25 lbs - 15 lbs = 232 lbs.
      Essentially, instead of calculating the weights at both the factory conditions and what we need it be at, I just took the differences between the two.
