  • Just seconds away from landing a trophy PR winter steelhead. A beautiful colored buck with a long nose and plenty of fight. I made 2 SMALL MISTAKES that cost me a fish of a lifetime. In this video I share with you those mistakes so that you can AVOID MAKING THE SAME MISTAKES and can land the fish of your dreams.

Looked to be plenty of slower, deeper water not far downstream. He'd have cane down pretty quickly once he got tired. When netting alone, I'd advise waiting until he shows his white belly once before having your net at the ready. You may make a miracle scoop once a winter, but you can just as easily knock off more than one. That one seemed to briefly show belly right before it escaped, but not long enough for me. As far as your knot goes, it wasn't clear to me what exactly was left where the knot was supposed to be. I heard "curly que's," which led me to believe part of the knot stayed inside the end of the swivel after it broke. You clearly mentioned your line didn't break. You kept mentioning the lack of a tag end that you always leave there, so the knot was slipping? If the knot did slip off, no curly que pieces should be left, hence my questions. The knot is the weak link of the leader. Most knots are close to but not 100% the breaking strength of the line. If the drag was too tight, you end up with no know gone, unless there are weak spots in the leader itself, caused by many things, wind knots, rubbing on rocks or logs, on and on. If you did get any line back at all, even a curly piece, your knot broke, and it didn't slip off. Which is good. I expect a leader that is frequently inspected and not compromised during the fight to break at the knot. That says to me, I didn't do anything wrong with respect to my knot. If a knot was showing signs of slippage, and you didn't replace it, well, my friend, it was a mistake, but not one I'd call small, especially on a UA-cam channel being a content creator. You'd have gotten a lot of mileage from that fish. It was a lesson learned the hard no more, no less. Doesn't affect my opinion of you at all. I never carried a net in all the 4 and a half decades of steelie fishing, and I lost fish because of it. I lost far more by refusing to drag them up the bank to land them if I knew they were going back. I looked at that as the price of doing business. I'm not sure of what you said about the in-fight drag adjustments because it didn't matter. I listened to the smoothness of the drag as he peeled line out, while at the same time looking at the bend of your rod, and I already knew your drag choices were on point. It is tough to keep that darn net hoop away from a steelie using one arm while fighting it with the other. Steelhead are legendary for exposing one small slip-up. Want to hook a 20 pounder? Tie a knot in your leader, your odds just skyrocketed! 😂 One last thing, and that is that that fish isn't the fish of a lifetime, not for you. You'll beat that one, maybe before the month is over. It's March, after all. I enjoy watching you fish, your enthusiasm is contagious, and I respect that you openly acknowledge God in your platform. This honors Him and blesses you and your show. Tight lines, brother!

People can always ask but its not good ediquate to share online. This year I've explored and caught fish on 4 rivers new to me and this exploration is rewarding. If you fish, I encourage you to go to the ODFW site and find new places to fish and have fun exploring. Thanks for commenting and good luck.

More of a reminder to fishermen and women so that they can actually catch the fish of their lifetime :) Cheers.

When you are in quiet water like that with a sloping bank just slide the fish gently up on to shore. It works really well. Just make sure you choose a gentle slope so the fish slides easily

Man my biggest regrets for fishing come from knowing something doesn't seem right and not fixing it like a dull hook or a knot that looks weird or tightened up weird ,it's things like this that will make u a better fisherman because you won't take the chance next time and maybe it will be a 18 pounder next time u land because you took the time to fix something you didn't like, wicked looking river and spot too btw dont got nothing like this around me

That's it! get's us every time. One small mistake costs us way too much. As long as we keep getting better and learning we will level up to pro status someday. Cheers!

It's a good fishery, but not a lot of access. Just be careful, that fish took me down into "private property" which resulted in a confrontation with the owner that I didn't love.

Have your buddy net instead of you??? Just standing there doing nothing 😂

That was my fault. I was worried about him walking down those slick rocks and thought I could do it myself. You are absolutely right, I was just trying to make sure he didn't break his legs lol

Yep fix anything that looks off. Little fray , knot looks funky anything. At least you got to fight him and got ‘em on camera. I lost one huge dark steely and caught one nice 11 pounder on Wednesday. Hopefully hit it again this weekend after I take my kids herring fishing

Ditch the net. Playing that fish another minute isn't going to kill it or you. Steelhead will generally lay over and you can bring them to the shore edge after a short battle and tail them to quickly take the hook out it's mouth to release (wild) or kill it (hatchery). Honestly not saying this to be mean, but act like you've caught a thousand of them and it's a breeze. The fish in my avatar is an honest 30 that was caught and released with no net. It eventually laid over and was able to tail it for a quick photo, taping and release.

I appreciate your comment but don't agree on that option for myself. I see way too many people harm fish without a net. Additionally, I have lost lots of fish while playing them out and I hate that so I prefer to use a net. I would rather just learn from my mistakes. I don't have a problem with anyone who chooses the method you choose; to each their own. We all have our own methods and that's cool. Maybe someday when I can live with losing a few I might reconsider. Thank you for the advice.

No way for you to learn without making mistakes. Go catch some more! You'll win some battles and you'll lose some battles. Good luck out there!

@@righteousriverfishinginoregon7I dont see a problem with using a net , I don't usually bring a net unless the bank is too high to land a fish I might want a picture of ( like a 15 LBer!!! ) mostly I just reach down an unhook them with out touching or taking them out of the water though , like how many pictures of an 8-10pound steelhead dose one person need ( I do realize you as a contentcreator is different from my personal need for pictures), for me one per river is lots
