[Series] Japan's hidden listening bars
We are exploring Japan's rich culture of listening bars and audiophile venues. It's a culture rooted in the joy of discovering music, and listening to that music in the best possible environment-that means precision-made speakers, amps, turntables and mixers. Tucked away in basements, back-alleys and high-rise buildings, these bars come in different shapes and sizes, but they are united by their pursuit of quality, with owners endlessly fine-tuning their audio setups to create an enriching experience for anyone who visits. These are wonderful settings for people to share their love of music, serving as a "third place"-somewhere to unwind in between their time at work and home. Though they're the result of long-standing traditions, listening bars offer a glimpse into progressive Japan, one of the world's most vibrant places for music discovery.

Isaac Fidler Thank you!!
Thank you beautiful boy
Isaac Fidler thanks!
thank you, arigato
Thank you , was wondering which book he meant.
This would be heaven to me, when I go to Japan I’m definitely not gonna leave without visiting this place
I think i'm not gonna leave this place at all 😄
You can feel the bass. You can feel the bass real hard.
you can hear the tinnitus
@@Traaaaad i think it's possible to have stellar bass without requiring the levels that'll create hearing loss & tinnitus.
flowerhuss lol
@@garrettk7166 bass also does not usually cause hearing problems unless it's incredibly loud. It's usually high frequencies
This series has been amazing RA. Hope a few more listening bars are on the radar!
I just love how Japan is so Niche.
After hauling around 5 milk crates of lps & filling a closet each place. Having my good old Radio Shack linear tracking turntable. And working 40 hours a week for 30 years. Got into simplicity/minimalism & said "hey I'm going go to Bdaltons & sell my albums" I donated my turntable to goodwill & kept my cassette collection.
Time is not treating those very well but, still listenable.
The 'Hot' thing in Japan is vinyl. My pink floyd, my johnny hartman , My time life Satchmo, billy holliday, mozart,
Ron Smith Restock! Recently gone to swap meets, thrift stores-found Django Reinhardt box set, Chopin, Jimmy Smith, Coltrane w/TMonk, Steely Dan! ✌️ 🎶
@@brucephoenix3989 aw man
Vinyl is music
I am trying to get every song & artist I lost, from a playlist & stay a computer cowboy.
Took a year on tube to find Charlie but, fans are great & will post all the cool stuff. Still tending my simple 'life' & trying to let go
Love & Laughter in Life
Peace
Ron Smith Sounds like you got it ☮️
I’ve been absolutely loving this series! What an amazing concept that resonates with me. I would love to have a spot like this as my local hang out.
The production of this series is pretty incredible. Photography, editing and editorial aspects are top notch. Quite inspiring to find such quality content on UA-cam.
the type of bar that i will spending the rest of my bartending carreer in Jakarta, serving people who looking something different than any other commercial bar around the town, meeting with new people, sharing and making new story among them, while me working behind the bar, making them good quality drinks/cocktails from the skill that i learned in years and years.. working everyday without never get boring cos your in a circle of positif energy, full of joy and happinness , people can release the tention and stress because the ambience, the music, the sound system, and the great cocktails, with cool people...thats what I called great bar, dont really care any bar award that mostly people in the industry chasing and very ambition about it, but the people only care about how we can make great story everyday and make people happy and leave the bar with smile and great feeling..."someday...will make it happen"
I’ve been here; it was by far the best bar/club we went to in Japan
Very good place cheap price , fantastic music 100 percent recommend, I want to go again
The place is probably packed now. But Thank you for introducing the place to the rest of us. It makes me wish there were something like that around here. Especially the Jazz and Classical Cafe/Bars. Who wouldn't love hanging out and listening to great Jazz or Prog on a serious soundsystem and an awesome environment.
Love the vintage style of the soundsystem..looks a cool place
I'm off to Japan in Sept so will definitely go to this place. I doubt I'll ever want to leave!
It seems to me 'The Third Place' would be a good name for a hidden bar. Another excellent example of a part of Japanese culture we westerners no little to nothing about. Arigato.
These videos are brilliant! Thank you RA and I hope you make more of these videos =)
Visited that place because of this video. Entrance is like 2000? yen, which you spend for drinks. DJs arrive at 9pm as far as I remember. Very cosy place, order some hibiki, listen to a set, relax. But not too much, if you miss the train back to hotel it will cost you :)
This whole concept is such a wonderful culture
Looks amazing venue. Going to have to check it out when I am in Japan in September.
Great video and highly inspirational for audiophiles and music lovers! Id love to visit this bar in Japan
I love these listening bars...
japan is so peaceful!
The book he refers to may be "The Great Good Place" by Ray Oldenburg
my town has an underground bar with great speakers. the bass is incredible.
UNDERGROUND !!! that's how the Paradise Garage (NYC 1976 - 1987 )started. Word Of Mouth .
Yes
I googled my area today/ there’s one in Oakland,ca
I’ll be there this Wednesday Thursday night 👍🤙🎶
Yea they are popping up down there. Whats it called?
what's the name? looking for a similar place in/around san Francisco :-)
Dang how can i missed this bar!!! My hotel is also just infront of the crossing... Can wait to go back to my favorite place in the world. Japan!!!
Fantastic. I am really enjoying this series. That's where you really focusing on the experience and the set which dj plays takes on journey through sound...
in gratitude; thank you for enlightening us about "the journey in, for and by music"
Remix Audio Bar in Santa Fe NM is another great listening bar
Beautiful piece. Thank you for sharing.
Such a dream to play at this kinda place ! DJ Nori please holla at me !!!
Another Amazing episode on this sound loving music culture
Having lived in Japan it's paradise for hifi music, something almost dead in the USA.
I’m so glad this video popped up I live in Japan now and miss the underground club scene with good music to dance to
Crystal B im going to Japan in a month and im looking for underground clubs with good music to dance, not these normal drinkings clubs with mainstream party music. Can you recommend me something?
A 3rd place is a fascinating thing I'm going to create!. I will start on that prediction now that I have heard this.
Haha I’ve been to this bar. It’s a bar. That’s it. Surprised at how it’s being lauded as something extravagant. Good for them to create a buzz and blow some egos but really it’s not much to shout about.
I was thinking the same thing. Can't people go somewhere with headphones..same effect, no?
I love this place, cant wait to go next week. vibes hard. Does get a bit smoky.
Do they play any rock music?

Keep em coming RA!
i love the bar settings alot...
Beautiful work, RA! ❤️
absolutely loving these
I have always wondered why there are no bars, clubs, or venues for audiophiles.
Ok so this is super awesome. I used to live in Sapporo, now I am in Malta. I love sound systems, currently I have an Onkyo and Marantz surround sound receivers, driving Wharfedale and JBL speakers , 3 Subs and 14 floor standing speakers. When I come to Japan I would definitely like to come and listen to your sound system. Technics that you use truly brings back memories .. Mata Ne 👏🙏🥂
amazing tracks!
I have been there because of this video and stayed 5 min.
Love it !!!
Love this series RA!
Please do "The Room" In Shibuya ! Such a huge place !!!
S Ben the room is a wonderful bar 💫
I'm inspired, I want to try and do this sort of concept in Niagara, Canada.
Make it happen!
@@danzena4059 I remember visiting a place called Bach's Cafe in Halifax that had this incredible sound system and played classical and jazz records. I think this could really fly in Niagara Falls.
slowly making this a reality in my area at venues like Stratus Vineyards, Old Stone Inn Boutique Hotel and SRC Vinyl / Limited Distillery.
aww would love to play there one day
Defo checking this place out.
incredible peaceful Dokuz!
YESSSS!!!! LOVE THeSE
Wish I could find a list of bars in Tokyo with awesome sound systems playing jazz.
Brilliant series
This is a concept I've been actively working towards in Niagara Falls and Niagara On The Lake, Ontario, Canada. I am working with Old Stone Inn Boutique Hotel, Stratus Vineyards and SRC Vinyl/Limited Distillery. If you're in the area, look me up, cheers!

classy.
I can't wait to return.
The book he is referring to is: www.amazon.com/dp/B007I1UXYC/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1
A truly amazing book about the 'coffeeshop culture.' Funny that this 'bar' is more like a coffeeshop than it is a regular bar.
Great news for the futur of music
Fantastic!!!
awesome
I love bridge!! 😆✨
And they are so well hidden that only the owners know about them
merci
There over 3000 in Japan these music bards called Jazz Kissa !!!

Anyone know of any stations here on YT that play experimental/downtempo/chill music old and new?
Any similar places in the UK? This is incredible
Spiritland.
Cafe Oto is like what you think this place is like. Bridge is a horrible scene. Cafe Oto is great.

Wicked film! What's a guy gotta do to come film docs with you guys in Japan then ay? (No, really.)
Where can I buy and download the intro track/song and can anyone recommend DJ sets with music like that.
Sounds awesome. Definitely want to visit, but are gaijin allowed to go there?
I'd love to play a set in this place .I'm pretty sure there won"t be drunk idiots with their phones asking for a shitty pop track
I want to know the name of that book ! 1:34
"Celebrating the Third Place: Inspiring Stories About the Great Good Places at the Heart of Our Communities" - is the book I assume he is referring to
Does anyone know the name of the book he was talking about that writes about the "third place"?
Typical bridge regular is hella hot
Do any of these listening bars play rock music or is it just jazz, ambient type stuff?
Grandfathers in Shibuya plays classic rock sometimes
