- The past few years have seen a wave of listening bars opening across Europe. Taking inspiration from Japan's culture of audiophile venues, these spots put a unique twist on a long-standing tradition, creating an environment for discovering music that appeals to hi-fi obsessives and casual listeners alike.
The Rise of Listening Bars: Barcelona
"We are in a Mediterranean city-at some point people want to chat." Guille De Juan, owner of Barcelona venue Curtis, knows it's impossible to replicate a Japanese-style, no-talking-allowed listening bar in his home city. Instead, he's built a space inspired by Japan's audiophile venues but adapted to Barcelona's buzzy atmosphere.
Curtis, which opened in 2018, also takes inspiration from a source closer to home: Nica, a Barcelona audiophile venue with an impressive programme of DJs and live acts.
Barcelona isn't the only city where listening bar culture is taking root. You will find them in Stockholm, Amsterdam, Istanbul and London. (The previous film in this series told the story of London's influential Brilliant Corners.) These spots put a unique twist on a long-standing tradition, creating an environment for discovering music that appeals to hi-fi obsessives and casual listeners alike.

We are exploring Japan's rich culture of listening bars and audiophile venues. It's a culture rooted in the joy of discovering music, and listening to that music in the best possible environment-that means precision-made speakers, amps, turntables and mixers. Tucked away in basements, back-alleys and high-rise buildings, these bars come in different shapes and sizes, but they are united by their pursuit of quality, with owners endlessly fine-tuning their audio setups to create an enriching experience for anyone who visits. These are wonderful settings for people to share their love of music, serving as a "third place"-somewhere to unwind in between their time at work and home. Though they're the result of long-standing traditions, listening bars offer a glimpse into progressive Japan, one of the world's most vibrant places for music discovery.

In a world of headphones and shitty device speakers, this is exactly what we need. Listening to full resolution music (not mp3 or streaming) on a really good speaker system is a religious experience.
And this bar would be great for introverted people. It lets them get out of the house and into a space where they don't have to talk if they don't want to, they can just be around other people.

@@CockatooDude That's true, some headphones are *way* better than others, but most people don't have good headphones.
Also, we evolved to hear sounds at a distance through the air. The way most people use headphones, it's like someone shouting directly into your ear. It is especially bad considering that modern music production is so loud!

This is an amazing concept! Back in my formative years, I and a bunch of friends would just sit in a basement listening to records. Listening. Not talking. just listening. People used to do that but I'm not so sure they do anymore. We used to listen to the most esoteric music. Sometimes jazz fusion, sometimes progressive rock. Never any pop or dance music. It was a great time.
I'd go to one of these bars if they had that type of music you mention . Unfortunately I doubt that kind of place exists.
i know this is an old comment, but im hear to say, They do!!! me and my friends would always come home after a night out and each take a turn playing a song we think the others would like, we'd play it listen, then talk about the effects and instruments and what genre we are to play next. We discovered so many new songs and made our group quite close as music does indeed connect, clubbing was good but coming home with a group of friends and just listening to magical beats/sharing was the best part about going out.
"the kind of place which is not a dance club, but it is about sound, the quality of the sound.... is cared for in detail" what i've always wanted but this is the first time i've realized there are actually such places called SOUND BARS!!!!
Such an awesome idea to make the music the focal point of the place, still keeping it subtle enough for people to enjoy it and to socialise. Love it.

@@Canadian_Eh_I I mean yeah but if you are an audiophile you understand how expensive the gear is. Creating a venue like this that can pool some capital is a great way to bring the experience to the masses. Most of us could never dream of having a system like that in our home. I think it could be succesful with a niche market.
I'm jealous. I'd go regularly to one. Imagine combining it with a dispensary/ "coffee shop"

We were doing this in NYC back in the mid 80s to mid 90s as the DJ and the scene were catapulted to stardom. Listening parties were common at record shops as well as the distributors warehouses. They were by invite only, and mainly only top DJs, promoters, club owners, and music store owners/buyers were invited. So much fun. We'd also get to listen to newly minted acetates from the artists. It would be a night for experimentation and conversation about music.
Anyways, glad this next generation is finally understanding what we fell in love with back in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s. It's EXACTLY why places like The Loft & Garage existed. The focus was on the music. Always.

There’s a listening restaurant in London you sit in booths and put on headphones and play vinyl. Drink and food are there too.

I like this
In the 80's. I went into bar on Okinawa called "Hartsfield sound gallery". Various JBL drivers arranged for listening. There were no dead spots in the bar, and it was a pretty clean horn sound. Not blasting, but moderately loud. It was all about jazz.
The main speakers were embedded in concrete. There were subs on the wall that were clusters of 4 x10" drivers in sealed boxes.

This concept started wth David Mancuso at his Love Saves The Day invitation party in NYC on 2/14/1970 which turned into The Loft party . David visited Japan and England and expanded ded the Loft parties there as well. The only difference is the setting. The rise of Audiophiles! This is fantastic!

I am very upset that this video was uploaded the day I left Barcelona because I was just there for 3 days trying to find venues with good music and was not very successful in my own endeavors. Now I am even more upset realizing that Curtis was only a few streets from my hotel!! Cannot wait to go back to bcn and have something new to see :)

The Loft parties are still going strong. In 2020 we will be coming up on the 50th anniversary. The Longest running dance party using single record play. NO MIXING. I am sure further back in time there were listining parties in peoples homes in some form of media. I speak in regards to needle on wax. Back in the early 2000 I hosted a listening party at a bar in Brooklyn with several DJ/Programmers. The differemce is that these are done on a daily basis and no dancing.

This concept would be incredibly popular in Mexico City! I don't quite understand the fascination Europeans have with the constant "club beat". It's so vapid, and cheap-sounding. I noticed living in Mexico City a couple years ago, that there was a culture in the young people, eager to explore not just new sounds, but also some of the older, progressive, and experimental music: Scelci, Xenakis, Milton Babbit, Pauline Oliveros, Noise Music, 70's Prog...like Soft Machine, and early King Crimson, Art Zoid... There is even a new label in Mexico City devoted to Noise, and Dark Experimental genres called - Substrata Records. I am glad to see this happening in Barcelona. I hope it spreads to places like Valencia, and Lisbon.

Here in the US, I am afraid that we are going to be cursed with 4 more years of tRump!!! I am a musician, and I need to be in a good place to launch my project. I lived in Berlin for a short time...lots of artists, but NOT my place - didn't feel IT! Lisbon has a thriving music scene - GREAT Musicians, and the Ocean is right there! - and CDMX has a "Vibe", an awareness, and Goodness that is created by the People! - It's a difficult choice.

@@undoubtedly - I lived in NYC for almost 20 years. I moved a couple of years ago because it is almost completely Unaffordable! I currently live in Philadelphia - 2 hours from NYC. It's cheap, and there are definitely reasons for this! - Baby!.. It is NO New York City! I lived in Lisbon in 2010-11. It was changing, but getting better in some ways...more creative and "Hipster". Now - IT is becoming expensive, and some of my Portuguese friends have been priced out of their neighborhoods! I will move soon - in 3 or 4 months - in the Spring. I am considering CDMX (I lived there in 2013-14) and loved it! The People are Incredible! BTW... I am half Mexican/Irish-American. The other cities I am considering are Valencia, Rome, and Lisbon again - with reservations. Barcelona has been coming back into my radar as well. I have visited BCN 3 times. I have a music project that I want to work on and expand - and I need a beautiful place with Intelligent and creative people! Seriously, it's just a bar with good sound. Just the ambient stuff is very rare, cause no one really cares. Fun places to be, sure, but these are just bars with young owners mainly.

Electronic music on LP? I don't see a reason other than marketing. Anyway, most speakers are so riddled with faults you need room correction to fix it.
A hipster place like this is not gonna do well unless you have a wide variety of coffee roasts and ipa beers to go with the crackling vinyl.

Not impressed with their music, I prefer jazz, but the ideas good. If I had the funds I would open up a jazz bar. I've put about 30 grand into my sound system and theres nothing like music played on good equipment with the right acoustics.

Definitely what I was thinking, this public for his majority is from big city, capitals... I love the concept but honestly my best way to enjoy high quality music is alone with a drink at night or in a middle of a festival with people who came for a special DJ or something and it says.... DANCE. I feel those bars are in between a full enjoyment!
Not in Japan though. The most interesting Jazz Bars ( or Listening Bars) are always located in the more rural area.
