@@alexisaguirrevazquez7900 I thought it over for a bit, with it coming down between The Precursor Legacy and Jak 2, and I personally settled on the latter. I think all of the entries in the Jak trilogy were phenomenal from a technical standpoint, but I feel that Jak 2 offered something more revolutionary compared to The Precursor Legacy, and that Jak 3 was an expansion of Jak 2’s foundation and didn’t offer as big of a leap as it was between the first and second titles. Specifically, The Precursor Legacy took heavy inspiration from Super Mario 64’s formula and expanded it to include an open world with virtually no loading screens or breaks between gameplay, a day/night cycle, a deeper narrative compared to SM64’s, and vehicular gameplay. It certainly was a step above what SM64 offered, but I don’t expect The Precursor Legacy drawing in anyone else but the people who liked SM64. As for Jak 2, Naughty Dog wasn’t shy about revealing their inspirations from the GTA series when choosing this new direction for the series. When I was younger, my parents never let me play any games that were rated “M for Mature” like the GTA series. I think with Jak 2, it was revolutionary in the sense that they struck a perfect balance between making a GTA experience that was appealing to teens while still preserving elements from The Precursor Legacy so that the spirit of the first title was still present. In this case, they reached a new demographic that the series they took inspiration from couldn’t reach, and it gave the younger me a GTA experience I always wanted to experience (since I was forbidden from playing any of the GTA series) without any of the profanity or explicit content the GTA series is known for having. I’m sure there are many other GTA clones out there like The Simpsons Hit and Run that don’t have an M for Mature rating, but I think Jak 2 offered an experience that was as close as possible to having a GTA title rated T for Teens. I feel even Rockstar’s Bully for the PS2 wasn’t a GTA for teens, because Jak 2 offered players the ability to hijack the vehicles in the city without restriction, Jak used a gun that could kill people and creatures, etc.
Quality content man. I'd choose the ps3 version because of how smooth frame rate is and how good it looks. Ps2 would be my second option because runs well and I haven't notice frame rate issues. Ps4 is worse for me as lag and limited movement
A nice video to wake up early to, for sure. I'd like to say, maybe tone down the hyper editing a bit ;) Especially when talking about the tech stuff, like at 3:33 for example. It can get quite confusing when different numbers are thrown at you one a time and the image changes with them, instead of them being organised neatly under whatever thing they belong under; like PS3 tech numbers (all of them) show below a PS3 pic, and so on... Or they pop up once you mention them but stay there for a while for us to get the full picture. But all in all informative as always! :D
I bought PS4 a few days ago just to play Jak and Daxter lol Jak 1 is running great Jak 2 has scratchy sounds in the audio at times unfortunately. But overall it's acceptable for what it is
I think the reason why movement is so snappy in ps4 emulation because ps2 and ps3 controller use cross deadzone while ps4 controller uses circle, if you have ever tried to play ps3 version with DS4 controller, (or any game with movement to all directions) you would notice that the player cant move full speed when moving diagonally, this is because the games were built for cross deadzone. So i guess in PS4 jak games and other ps2 emu games they used hacky methods to increase the sensivity to reach full movement in these games.
ps4 "version" is just emulated ps2 iso, with increase internal resolution, that slowdowns are emulator related, just like in pcsx2 and this is why it has that citadel skip.
Thanks for the video, i do have one thing to add it's the lighting, effects and texturing you mentioned how it looked in the distance but not up close In comparing PS3 and PS4 Jak 1 I noticed clearer detail on Jak's clothing and Daxters fur texture, I believe there's also effects missing from the PS3 release which I think I can confirm unless the PS4 version removed them but I can't say for Jak 2 + 3.
I heard various lighting effects like more shiny reflections on certain 'metallic' surfaces but that's not something I've compared. I can confirm that the 'stars' (sun, night star and daystar from Jak 3) are just static sprites in PS3 where as in PS4 they're full on particle effects. Some of these may have been based on PS2 hardware rendering and so when porting, alternative methods to re-create the effects were necessary and optimisation to remove frame drops was deliberately considered on PS3 (and obvious meticulously considered on PS2). I feel like PS4 would perform better in terms of frame rate if eg. stuff like those star particles weren't constantly active.
I’m kinda a Jak purest, and honestly, graphics aside, the PS3 versions have too many graphical and sound issues. I hope they fix the frame rate issues for the PS4 versions
After over a year of no patches, can’t help but feel a little ripped off, game could really be good, and they could 100% fix this in patches if they really cared, kinda sucks.
vindictx sorry for late reply, but I would say if you have no other Jaks to play, than go for it on PS4 but if you have a PS3 or PS2 you shouldn’t bother
Would you ever consider making a video of all the locations in which the punch glitch happens? I've platinumed Jak 1 on the collection and never witnessed this glitch in that game and I haven't touched Jak 2 & 3 at all to be able to comment on those. Thank you for the informative videos!
Do you get the punch glitch only in Jak II or the entire HD Collection? I run the games on emulator, and I’ve recently been getting the punch glitch frequently on all games. Not just limited to punching, but occurs when I roll too. It didn’t occur in the past in anyway I’ve noticed. I don’t quite want to believe it’s my controller’s fault, since my analog seems to function well in other games, but it’s *really* annoying the hell out of me.
It's the entire collection. I also experienced rolling in a different direction at random, so it's not your controller's fault. What emulator are you using just out of curiosity?
Speaking of the PS2 to HDMI adapter, most TV's and monitors don't even support 480i through HDMI(Most games and the console stick around that resolution). That's just something I thought of throwing in there.
sebastianali hack your vita with tech James vids and put lolicon which is is vsh menu with super overclock on your vita and gfx graphics and you can adjust your FPS limit and res on there and makes it pretty good
This is an old video so maybe the information isn’t relative anymore, but do you know if those framerate spikes occur on PS4 Pro or PS5 as well. I have the collection on PS3 (and the original games on PS2 actually), but I kind of don’t feel like turning on the PS3 just to play them, but will if that’s still the best way to play them. Also how bad are the Vita ports, really? Portable J&D sounds kind of nice, not gonna lie.
If you have a pc, the best way to play Jak 1 and 2 and eventually 3 is through openGOAL. If you’re interested in playing them portably, I played both on steam deck and it worked really well
I thought the ps4 and HD element would create the best possible experience for jak and daxter. For me the frame rates were very disappointing. Normally it doesn't bother me but in this case the frame rate is blatantly all over the place. Still playable and fun but I just expected more
I played the Ps4 version and had these framerate issues. I was honestly thinking that it was just one of those games that was hard to emulate on newer hardware and that I was grateful that I didn't have the Ps3 version. Oh how wrong I was lmao. Sony and Naughty Dog don't give af about one of their greatest IPs.
Boomer cuz I remembered that in one Jak 2 stream in the sig escort Mission something like that randomly appeared on the top of the screen, but for the live of me I don't remember the name of that streamer tho
I tried switching to 576p on my PAL PS3 to see what it would look like. It's worth noting that this also changes the refresh rate to 50hz. 50fps is fine but together with the lower resolution, I'm not sure it's worth the trade off. I wish there was an in-game option that didn't affect anything else but the aspect ratio.
Use an mclassic and switch it to it's 4:3 mode. You'll get to keep 720p, 60fps and it'll even upscale to 1080p or 1440p(if you have a TV or monitor that supports that resolution).
pointing this out now the reason punch glitch doen't exist in ps4 and citadel skip does exist in ps4 is because they use the ps2 versions on their emulator for ps4 which would also explain the lag spikes with jak 2 and 3 on ps4
I agree with u. I made the mistake of buying jak 2 on ps4 for $15 freaking dollars and it is almost unplayable. I think ill get the game on my ps3 instead
Do save files actually load slower on PS3, or is it just that the PS3 gives you more UI (is that the right term?) options-stuff that prolongs the player from getting into the game quicker?
Jak and Daxter Misconceptions It takes longer to save and load, compared to PS2/4 and has nothing to do with extra menuing or pop-ups. I can make a side by side comparison, if you'd like me to.
Quite interesting, isn't it? The load times are faster but the save loads are slower. (I guess speed-running the PS3C is still faster though because you're only ever loading the save file once, whereas the other load, multiple times.) Yeah do that, that'd be interesting. In all honesty, there is many comparisons needed with the different versions with the games in general. It's why I appreciated you acknowledging the 4:3 presence in only the PS2/PS4V and the invert camera (TPL/JII) in only the PS3V and the changed z-axis camera for the PS4V.
If you are going to play on PS2, I would recommend getting a component cable for it, rather than an HDMI convertor. I think they are pretty cheap these days
i didn't run into any masssive frame drops on the ps4 version. but it does not look as good as the ps3 version. the reason being, the ps4 version is more of a port then it is a remaster. while everything got a HD overhall in the ps3 version the ps4 version more so just upscaled it
Oh yeah, the PS4 release is definitely not a Remaster. Everything besides the Resolution looks a lot better on PS3 in my opinion, including the framerate.
i do. it sucks. unless you have a nasa super computer that can run the games in software mode with stable fps. you're good. i tried everything to make it run without graphics bugs on hardware mode before i bought a ps3. no such thing. :/
@@ss2gora0 make sure you do your research on which ps3 is backwards compatible. and dont make the same mistake i did and get stuck with punch glitch :/
Boomer that’s unfortunate. That’s an insult to older fans tbh. You didn’t mention Jak X but that isn’t part of the trilogy. And uh. You’re underrated. Deserve more of an audience and views. Keep grinding you’ll hit 1,000 and keep going.
- Jak X saves super fast on PS4 which basically stops that save file corruption glitch happening from PS2 as the game wants to autosave fairly often. I speculate it might still be possible but you'd have to power off while it's saving which is much less likely to occur now. - Particle effects (turbos) seem to have problems maintaining their positions in relation to the vehicle speed sometimes and the occasional frame drops when a lot of combat is happening. - Free unlockables from modern save files on PS4 make it easier to get everything without extra hardware ie. requiring a PSP on PS2 version.
I have all versions, and the PS4 versions WOEFULLY NEED patches. The transition from PS2 to PS3 reused assets of the originals, but basically reprogrammed the game from the ground up to run on that weird architecture. The PS4 versions are more true to the originals, BUT.......PS2 games work on the PS4 through emulation, so the reason they're more true to the original is because they literally are the originals in ROM form. While I understand the PS2 is pretty intense to emulate, if they're going to sell me a game I already own they should at least make sure it runs as well as the original. The fact the PS2 emulator on the PS4 works at all is an impressive feat, but there are some glaring bugs in the Jak games. Besides the frame rate issue, the entire Precursor Mountain Temple area of Jak 2 is broken; Precursor textures constantly flicker and fail to interact with lighting correctly, and I've encountered random freezes and crashes when fighting the large metalheads that come crashing out of the hillsides. The directional control issues are likely a similar issue, bad implementation of controller translation to the PS2 emulator. The games themselves on the PS4 may not directly need patches, but the PS2 emulation itself may need some more work. As impressive as it is, if I'm going to pay Sony for to use it I'm not going to be as forgiving as I would be with an online console emulator project.
yea everyone like my self prefer the ps3 port over the ps4 and mostly go on pcsx2 too play the ps2 ports too emulate and record on our pc easy of use .
Boomer when u run straight by holding down up the the analog stick and if u move the camera left or right slowly usually u can move/turn Jak the direction u turn the camera.
What? I was JUST about to buy the collection. I was so fucking excited, gonna stream for friends. Does that snapping into predetermined directions thing really happen? Edit: someone please tell me that doesn't happen I want to cry :(
It actually doesn't happen all too often. The PS3 version is the only way I can play all the games back to back and I only ever really had it happen once or twice my whole play session on Jak 2.
BoomerStreams I have a backwards compatible PS3(so it plays ps2 over hdmi) so I was trying to decide between the ps3 and ps2 version. Ps2 would be more expensive but not by much.
The reason why the PS4 versio sucks is cause it's the PS2 version poorly emulated like all the PS2 games on the PS4, they just increased the internal resolution and that's all. This is the main reason why i didn't buy this version, if they just ported the PS3 HD collection with improved res, i'd would be an instant buy for me, if just for the trophies, and a reason to replay theses classics.
Dark Cloud 1 and 2 and Rouge Galaxy were a good ports but the thing I didn't understand is that even those aged games some of them got a day one patch! it seems game tester aren't doing their jobs like they used to be.
@@gracekim1998 Money, I'd probably cost more have to natively port the HD classic trilogy than just to slap the ps2 version onto a bad ps2 emulator they had since the ps3 era.
Sid B The Lost Frontier isn't a good jak and daxter game. I play the vita version the most and it's portable, but it has a ton of bugs, glitches, and frame rate issues that keep it from being the best.
Cool vid man! I'm actually very interested in these type of comparisons. I heard some people mention input lag for PS3 but it's not something I can compare as I haven't played PS2 for years and PS3 is primary version for me so feels somewhat normal. And perhaps related; I've heard some people mention that PS3 controls don't have as smooth analogue? I don't think this is the same directional issue you mentioned on PS4 perhaps it's more the smoothness of the physical controller itself? - Makes me curious to dust off the PS2 to test those versions. XD Also when playing in debug mode on PS3 I have noticed that overall draw distance might be less ie. the horizon acts as a sort of draw line and undraws (or hides) map/objects that cross through it. It's kind of hard to describe as there seems to be an observational vertices between your point of view, the sky and the horizon that 'clouds' things in the distance at a shorter range, despite this overall the texture detail draw distance in general does seem higher on PS3.
One of my weaker areas, but from the specific comparisons I've done in person, I indeed notice the draw distance itself wasn't actually improved, but just the detail. Do you agree? In general, the PS3C needed a far more deserving comparison than what we have. There are so many misconceptions (heh) and the HD Collection is often praised as the second coming of jesus when it has incompetent issues, overlooked, that a remaster should not have: many graphical glitches (not even Precursor metallic surfaces and particle effects, but things like Kor's black face, Light Jak's yellow hair, Light Jak's completely blue colored eyes in the cutscene, blurry/pixelated eye textures, and weak, if even existent, AA).
I would love to see it, but I doubt it will happen in the near future. It's really hard to predict this stuff and I'm just a normal guy like everyone else.

Dolan Black Thanks, I appreciate it! That would be my prefered order as well.
Susdogewolf I see what you mean. I will try to improve on that next time!
Thanks Kai!
Very insightful. That’s the last time I use a ps4 controller for Jak haha
ps4 "version" is just emulated ps2 iso, with increase internal resolution, that slowdowns are emulator related, just like in pcsx2 and this is why it has that citadel skip.
Oh, I'm aware. Thanks for sharing though!
False confirmation. The Day Star, Day Sun, Night Sun are completely absent from the PS3C. The stars in TPL are non-existent to greatly absent in PS3C.
RodniDemental the ps4 version is just the ps2 version but badly emulated, it will always have issues unfortunately since it wasn't a true port
I’m kinda a Jak purest, and honestly, graphics aside, the PS3 versions have too many graphical and sound issues. I hope they fix the frame rate issues for the PS4 versions
The HD Collection certainly has some sound issues, there's is no denying that but I don't know of any graphical issues on PS3.
So how does it run on the Ps5 then, Ps3 Vs Ps5 who wins?
After over a year of no patches, can’t help but feel a little ripped off, game could really be good, and they could 100% fix this in patches if they really cared, kinda sucks.
Jake Blundell damn still not worth it ?
vindictx sorry for late reply, but I would say if you have no other Jaks to play, than go for it on PS4 but if you have a PS3 or PS2 you shouldn’t bother
Jak and Daxter Remake for PS5 would be awesome!
@@alexisaguirrevazquez7900 I use PCSX2. I fixed the issue by resetting the emulator's settings.
Speaking of the PS2 to HDMI adapter, most TV's and monitors don't even support 480i through HDMI(Most games and the console stick around that resolution). That's just something I thought of throwing in there.
Good point, thanks for mentioning it!
Thanks boomer I was thinking about buying them on ps4 so I can capture them easily but I guess I'll just have to wait.
Today still the ps vita version has terrible framerate? Because i have the ps vita and i dont know if is worth to buy...
sebastianali hack your vita with tech James vids and put lolicon which is is vsh menu with super overclock on your vita and gfx graphics and you can adjust your FPS limit and res on there and makes it pretty good
This is an old video so maybe the information isn’t relative anymore, but do you know if those framerate spikes occur on PS4 Pro or PS5 as well.
If you’re interested in playing them portably, I played both on steam deck and it worked really well
How do you control the throttle of a vehicle in Jak2 in the newer releases? Is it mapped to the triggers?
You don't press X too hard and you can break using square.
Compare it to OpenGOAL as well now!
I thought the ps4 and HD element would create the best possible experience for jak and daxter. For me the frame rates were very disappointing. Normally it doesn't bother me but in this case the frame rate is blatantly all over the place. Still playable and fun but I just expected more
Very insightful
I got JAK 2 on PS4, but it's blurry AF & frame rate is bad. It seems like just a port. I guess it's better on PS3.
You can play them on ps3 at 1080p60 deactivating 720p and 1080i resolutions on ps3 settings
Yeah, to this day playing jak 2 on ps4 is hard with those frame rates definitely stick with the ps3 hd collection looks and runs better.
It's curious, I thing I only had the punch glitch once or twice, it almost never happens to me.
It’s so sad they play different and run worse with every release 😂 I was wonder if it ran better on ps2 and it’s does thanks.
Glad to see this. I have the PS3 versions and I had no idea that the PS4 was so crap
I've been playing the jak collection on ps3 lately and I have not notice any punch glitch? Has it been parched??
Nope, still there.
0:48 top left corner : you were using debug mode right?
Matteo Canova Indeed, I was!
Boomer cuz I remembered that in one Jak 2 stream in the sig escort Mission something like that randomly appeared on the top of the screen, but for the live of me I don't remember the name of that streamer tho
Did they ever release a patch? How is the framerate on PS5?
no and they are still just alright on ps5. i played through all of them on ps4 and didnt encounter bugs. however the ps3 really looks better
For Speedruns, it's worth it to me. Playing casually though? I'm sure I too would prefer 720p.
Use an mclassic and switch it to it's 4:3 mode. You'll get to keep 720p, 60fps and it'll even upscale to 1080p or 1440p(if you have a TV or monitor that supports that resolution).
@@alexisaguirrevazquez7900mclassic?
pointing this out now the reason punch glitch doen't exist in ps4 and citadel skip does exist in ps4 is because they use the ps2 versions on their emulator for ps4 which would also explain the lag spikes with jak 2 and 3 on ps4
Pixtrix364 Mhmmm, exactly!
Can you do this with the sly games?

(I guess speed-running the PS3C is still faster though because you're only ever loading the save file once, whereas the other load, multiple times.)
Yeah do that, that'd be interesting. In all honesty, there is many comparisons needed with the different versions with the games in general. It's why I appreciated you acknowledging the 4:3 presence in only the PS2/PS4V and the invert camera (TPL/JII) in only the PS3V and the changed z-axis camera for the PS4V.
I actually purchased the Vita version and I'm pretty sure I would have had more fun throwing that money into a garbage disposal than I had playing it.
I'm sorry to hear! 🤣👌
Old vid I know but you should have also talked out the dreaded vita collection
I know very little about it unfortunately and I don't have any first hand experience. I simply didn't feel comfortable covering it.
What about emulation? does it look better on pcsx2 compared to the console versions?
Very informative. Thanks.
If you are going to play on PS2, I would recommend getting a component cable for it, rather than an HDMI convertor. I think they are pretty cheap these days
Just found out a glitch on the ps4. Don’t skip mission cutscenes that crashes the game
Whine and cheese continue to be very popular among the masses.
I bought the game from PSN store not on disc ! Did I make a mistake ? It’s the disc version better than the PSN store or their same quality?
They're the same to my knowledge.
I’m still baffled the PS4 version is a straight port of the PS2 version with tweaks. Why not use the PS3 version???
Yeah 😅
i didn't run into any masssive frame drops on the ps4 version. but it does not look as good as the ps3 version. the reason being, the ps4 version is more of a port then it is a remaster. while everything got a HD overhall in the ps3 version the ps4 version more so just upscaled it
Oh yeah, the PS4 release is definitely not a Remaster. Everything besides the Resolution looks a lot better on PS3 in my opinion, including the framerate.
"you forgot about the vita" Yes, I did, and I expect everyone else to do likewise.
What do you think about PS3 emulation? That's also an option to play Jak and daxter.
I haven't tested it myself but I heard it's alright.
And YES. you have the option of toggling 4:3 and 16:9 on the ps4
Do you have any opinions or thoughts on how to play Jak on PCSX2?
i do. it sucks. unless you have a nasa super computer that can run the games in software mode with stable fps. you're good. i tried everything to make it run without graphics bugs on hardware mode before i bought a ps3. no such thing. :/

You have any news on future frame rate patches ..?
Kinglordleader No, nothing. There has been talk about it for quite some time, but nothing has changed since.
0:53 It is..beautiful.
That's a render/encoding artifact I didn't catch before uploading.
@@BoomerStreams I hate it when that happens, haha. Sorry to be patronizing. I was just kidding around.
@@CaveyMoth All good, I think you're the first one to notice and point it out. 🤭
Any one notice the guy stuck at 6:44
Oh yeah, just noticed that. Never looked at it this specifically!
You just needed to hook up the ps2 with component..and a higher resolution was possible in this game and a select others
480p is the maximum the Jak titles run at on PS2.
@@BoomerStreams The precursor legacy is 480i only. The rest do support 480p though.
@@alexisaguirrevazquez7900 That is correct. I wanted to point out that they don't run any higher than 480p in my previous comment.
Can anyone tell me if the issues on PS4 have been fixed?
I can. They haven't!
Boomer aah, damn, but Thanks man, keep up the great videos 👍🏻
yea everyone like my self prefer the ps3 port over the ps4 and mostly go on pcsx2 too play the ps2 ports too emulate and record on our pc easy of use .
For the PS4 version can't u just use the camera to turn smoothly?
What do you mean exactly?
Boomer when u run straight by holding down up the the analog stick and if u move the camera left or right slowly usually u can move/turn Jak the direction u turn the camera.
Oh, I see what you mean now! Yeah it works, but you can't always do it that way, especially when quickly going around corners.
Boomer that's true but at least it there lol
I would much prefer if all directional inputs are there right away, so there's little need to talk about fixing it.
Does punch glitch happen in Jak 2 and 3?
Sadly, yes!
BoomerStreams as someone who has never played the series is the glitch enough for someone to seek out the ps2 versions?
For gameplay purists? Yes. For you specificly? I don't know. I found the input delay to be a bigger problem than punch glitch itself.
BoomerStreams I have a backwards compatible PS3(so it plays ps2 over hdmi) so I was trying to decide between the ps3 and ps2 version. Ps2 would be more expensive but not by much.
To my knowledge, you shouldn't experience either with a backwards compatible PS3.
Wow that 8-directional snapping is gross. Shit like that DESTROYS the gamefeel for me.
Still play on my PS2 FAT 500GB : )
Do you believe for new patches?
Why didn’t they do that?😅
@@gracekim1998 Money, I'd probably cost more have to natively port the HD classic trilogy than just to slap the ps2 version onto a bad ps2 emulator they had since the ps3 era.
I think vita is the best
K1llerB333 Are you serious? Do you mind if I hear your reasons?
Vita version is defo best + you can run The Lost Frontier on Vita too, win win.
Sid B The Lost Frontier isn't a good jak and daxter game. I play the vita version the most and it's portable, but it has a ton of bugs, glitches, and frame rate issues that keep it from being the best.
Lol
I consider the frame rate drops a feature that the other versions don't have.
It’s funny how I’ve never played the game before but I could immediately tell the PS4 one is the PS2 version 😂
31.3.23
Why don’t we take the lag and push it somewhere else
Anyone know how well these emulate on ps2 emulator?
PS2 for me because it's the original and I don't like the graphic changes in the other console versions even if the quality is better.
A lot of people feel the same way and I personally don't see anything wrong with it either.
Is the ps vita version going to get patched at all? The framerate and input lag is unbearable
No, it will probably stay where it's at for the rest of its existence.
XD
Also when playing in debug mode on PS3 I have noticed that overall draw distance might be less ie. the horizon acts as a sort of draw line and undraws (or hides) map/objects that cross through it.
I like ps3 best.
For the best experience play these on PCSX2 👌🔥🔥
you are my hero :")
Well jak 1 runs fine on ps4 I got that platinum easy but the amount of missed roll jumps heh
Can you play on xBox
Why do you think they never did a real remaster like they did with halo 1 and 2
I would love to see it, but I doubt it will happen in the near future. It's really hard to predict this stuff and I'm just a normal guy like everyone else.
PS3 Jak was a port to the hardware.....PS4 is using software emulation....
Oh, I thought I remembered you also saying PS3C had the limited movement like PS4C. Okay sdo it's only the PS4C, I see.
