What a beautiful and beautifully maintained aircraft - the engines are purring like big cats! I spent many hours as a passenger in these Douglas birds. Thank you for sharing!
Simply breathtaking! Even as a freight dog, the old 'Six looks pretty; seeing one perform those tricks is something else! Wonderful, wonderful airplane!
I was a Flight Engineer and A&P on DC6s in Alaska in the 90s, I can guarantee one thing, Douglas forgot more about building large propeller driven airplanes than Cessna or Beechcraft will ever know.
I think these are Pratt and Whitney R2800CB17 engines. The DC 7 didn't use it but the DC6 did. But this engine was used in many single and twin engine planes including the Convair and Martin 404 twins that were popular with American, Eastern, TWA etc back in the 50's.
I am (if everything works out) going to fly in this plane this coming April. They say it is the last Six built. The interior is new (luxury seating), actually the whole plane is like new.
Funny how all four props were stopped in the same position. One blade at 30 one at 50 and one at 10. During the 1950's & 60's I watched old prop liner action almost everday (lived near the airport) & never saw two props stop on the same spot on the same plane. Some may have been almost on the same spot but never exactly. They must have moved these engines by hand pushing on the prop blade or with the starter to get them like that.
I envy you for these times...dont like jet planes and the hecticness all around these days. sometimes a JU52 give sightseeing flights low level over Frankfurt skyline...depressant in our fast working world.
@mrtopcats yep, i think those US engines were the most smooth running radials in the world. equipped with turbocharger they bring this big aircrafts to altitudes for economic cruising speed....transatlantic
I was a c118 dc6 flight engineer in the usaf i loved the aircraft

Beautiful Aircraft! Very clean.
No matter your status or culture we all know a good thing when we see it. I hope the workers who made her are aware of just how admired their baby is.
