    One of the biggest reason for not placing trash bins in Korea is due to the recycling policy where people must segregate recyclable items and pure garbage. When the Korean government has introduced the system in the 90's a lot of selfish people just threw their garbage into the public thrash cans or garbage bins in the street instead of going trouble of purchasing the mandatory city garbage bag and separate them according to recycle policy. Thus a lot of municipal governments and communities (apartments, buildings) removed away public thrash cans in the streets as well as in the apartment complexes. Now very rarely we will see those selfish types of earlier days, but the custom of not placing garbage bins and thrash cans in the public area continues. hehe

      i was watching a we fancy video where they talked about the recycling policy and that was the first thing that came to mind when i saw "this problem". placing recycle bins everywhere is possible but i dont think its that feasible due to the cost.

    I experienced the trash bin problem in Japan as well. Especially when I buy those microwave meals from their convenience stores! Not to mention Japan's crazy over-the-top packaging. Even when I do find a trash bin, it's so tiny I can barely fit my trash into it, seems to be more for smokers. Very odd

      That's right. It's the same in Japan. Japanese do not eat and drink while walking. The trick is to find vending machines because there are dustbins usually located next to it.

    In San Francisco & other big cities in CA you have to be a defensive pedestrian, it’s basically really similar with the street traffic here.

    What bother me the most is air pollution and the smell. We could not open window to get fresh air. It smells bad most of the places.

    Regarding not stoppping for pedestrians, does that mean the courteous bowings are superficial and hence insincere ?

    In contrast, in Boston area the city is called a walking city and so cars have to stop for any jailwalkers. Even in a 40mps highway. But in NY city, you'll get run over by cabs just like Seoul. No trash bin = less $ for taxes. ^^

    • @SingaporeanInKorea
      @SingaporeanInKorea  7 років тому

      Thank you for your interesting perspectives! :) But taxes are still crazy high in korea despite not having trash bins haha up to 30% personal tax.

    Singapore is probably one of the few Asian countries where cars give way to pedestrians :D Try crossing roads in Vietnam or even Malaysia

    They are hogging at the train door because they want to make sure that they can get out of the train in case it gets crowded in the train I guess. It’s a common and selfish behaviour.

    Ard 14 min mark, the korean cleaner explained why thats a lack of bins but thats also sounds unconvincing.. Hahahahahaha
    Well, have to praise the sg govt extensive efforts to minimize the problem of hogging at doorways and never give ways but seems nowadays sg also experiencing the same things esp when the public transports starts to get overloaded..

    • @jasm76
      @jasm76 7 років тому +1

      Just wondering whether it is because of the Korean government’s recycling program for trash. I vaguely remembered watching a documentary about a Singaporean cleaner working with a korean cleaner in Korea.

    I guess the reason for no dustbin is hard to find workers clear the dustin, given the employement standard in Korea. Unless they willing to get 조선족 to do the job?

    • @SingaporeanInKorea
      @SingaporeanInKorea  7 років тому

      Interesting perspective! That could be one concern... they don't want other races to be all over doing this job yet no Koreans would do such a job...

    휴지통이 없는 이유는 쓰레기버리는 시스템이 종량제이기 때문이죠. 길가에 쓰레기통이 많다면 무단투기율이 높아지겠죠. 행정편의주의적인 관점이라고 비판받을 수 있겠지만 사람들이 도덕적으로 완벽한건 아니거든요. 그리고 쓰레기 배출억제의 목적이 있기도 합니다. 이 것은 첫번째 이유와 연관되어 있구요. 그 외는 테러방지, 관리비용 기타등등이 있겠습니다. 제 기억상으로 20년전쯤의 옛날엔 길가에 쓰레기통이 많이 있었지만 종량제봉투 시행이후로 많이 줄어든 걸로 압니다. 아래에 무슨 일본시스템이라니 하는 사람이 있는데 그건 아니구요. 아마 한국시스템이 어려우면 독일이나 일본에서는 적응 못하겠죠. 거기는 훨씬 더 복잡하고 깐깐하거든요.

      참고로 종량제 시행이후로 길가에 쓰레기통이 사라진다는 20년전의 신문기사입니다. newslibrary.naver.com/viewer/index.nhn?articleId=1995081400289108003&edtNo=5&printCount=1&publishDate=1995-08-14&officeId=00028&pageNo=8&printNo=2312&publishType=00010

    • @Candy7086
      @Candy7086 7 років тому

  • @stevexian4947
    @stevexian4947 7 років тому +1

    The real reason is that there is no trash can in Japan, and since Korea is influenced by Japan in so many ways, this is the feature that Korea takes from Japan.
    Their trash classification and recycling are also influenced by Japan.

    • @SingaporeanInKorea
      @SingaporeanInKorea  7 років тому +1

      Yeah, the best explanation I have heard so far is that after the recycling has been established, Korean's took to throwing into the public trash bins. As such these trash bins have to be taken away for the recycling to work.

      Please go back to your country where you came from.
      Tourist, visitor and student may be okay,
      but if you wanna live here, you must show respect and try to assimilate. Otherwise pls get out of Korea asap.
