I’m happy to see that you try so hard speaking English, and that you don’t give up even when things don’t turn out as expected. Your a very determined young lady, high standards, and I can see you have a kind soul. Keep on doing what you do, more people should follow your example and persistence, great job.

I am so impressed with her effort. While she did not get a fire using the bow drill, give her credit for putting in a serious attempt. I will take her advice and try at home (perfect conditions); however, I’ll be using different wood than what I would find in the field.
Still, look at all the things she tried: 1) Clay dishes, 2) Bow drill, and 3) Carving a bowl. Very impressive.

In the past you have had doubts about continuing to do these videos because of the negative commenters. The strength that you demonstrated in this video to show not only what worked, but what went wrong shows again your high qualities and honest nature. It takes a strong person to do that. Well done.

Your perseverance and willingness to try should inspire other young ladies. I always encouraged my daughters to try these things while we camped. It helped build their confidence in these situations and extends into everyday adversity. They are grown now but the learning experiences never stop. They have grown into incredible women and mothers.

Vanessa, you should put together a book wirh all of the eatable plants in the wood. That would inspire folks to get outdoors and enjoy nature. I think it would be a great idea! Think about it. Peace!

Don't feel bad my beautiful lady anyone who has used a Bowe drill or hand drill has had a failure with starting a fire in their time.i only use them as a last resort to start a fire.i don't go anywhere without a fire starter on me to make sure I never get caught without one because fire is one of the most important things u need.but I still use a bow drill or hand drill on occasion to keep in practice in using them.but in most bushcraft or survival conditions always be prepared for things not to go right for u because more times then not something will always go wrong.keep up ur good work.

    A wonderful video Vanessa.
I think what you said about looking for things such as the overhanging rock and the fallen tree to use in building a shelter was very good advice.
Any time when travelling through the wild (or anywhere else really) a person should keep their eyes open for anything they can use, be it for shelter, water purification, gathering, defense, and so on.
Great job on not only showing your attempts at the using the bow drill, but more importantly in showing that it didnt work and MOST importantly admitting to yourself and to us that very thing.
None of us likes to admit that we find ourselves lacking, but that's how we improve our skills. Identify the issue, admit it, practice it, overcome it and move on to the next one. I've never been able to start a four with a bow dril and it's something I know I need to, and will, work on myself (among other things).
I hope you have a wonderful day,
    Chris Hockman

    Hi Vanessa,
Don't be discouraged by the bow drill. It is WAY harder than people on UA-cam make it look! Try practicing at home until you can get it to work and then try it outside.
I LOVE this adventure that you are sharing with us! Remember- if everything goes perfectly then it is a boring trip! :)
Lots of love and thanks from California! Keep up the great work!

Danke, dass du heute Morgen Teil zwei gepostet hast, Vanessa. Eine angenehme Art, den Tag zu beginnen. Du hast so Recht. Nochmals vielen Dank, Vanessa. Eine wunderbare Tour.

Vanessa it's never a fail when you walk out of the woods with a smile. 😆 perhaps you are mothernature herself the way you scolded the woodsmen that left their trash behind. 😅 cutting glass bottles Is very difficult even with professional cutters. During survival glass is best used as it is or can be broken to use as razor sharp blades. Your plastic bottle water filter was 100% top quality. 👍👍 the fire starter kit was close to what you needed. The fire plate was a little thick maybe the second drill was spot on. the first bow was the right size but too green and flexible. The bow needed to be stiff enough to pull the cord very tight and not flex inward slackening which cause sliping. You'll get it. 😜 Your black rock looks like natural anthracite coal. Wait, What, Don't we get to eat them large delicious looking snails 😂😂 Oh Vanessa do we have to wait another week to see you again?

Happy Easter Vanessa!! I really enjoyed the video and like that you keep it practical by showing the hard parts of bushcrafting. It's encouraging to see you not give up. I'm no expert, but a small hint with bow drill. The bow was probably just fine, but I find it helps to use the same type of wood for the spindle and board. A good rule is to use a softer wood that you can sink your fingernail into, in the U.S. willow & cotton wood work really well.. Hope it helps & good luck with your practice! 😀😉

Vanessa: You have shown techniques in this video many had no idea of doing. Yes your bow draw did not work, normally it is because of not enough pressure and the type of wood used. But you never gave up. You took a bad thing and made a good thing out of it. You are an angel and everything you do in your videos shows us all we can do it like you do. Your love of nature your respect of nature shows. Love ya

helpful tip -- not exactly sure where you had your fire but you have to be careful building fires near rock overhangs or caves because the heating/cooling cycle can cause the rock to expand, fracture, and fall on top of you. A few people every year meet their demise this way. Stay safe! I enjoy your videos.

Another great video Vanessa! I'm watching this on April 22nd, which is Earth Day. I spent the day picking up trash from the woods and roadside. Hi Vanessa Failure is a important part of learning,i think most of us who tryed to make fire from friction fail, but you will i know keep trying where we stop.I was in Iceland last few days, you came to mind traveling in the country side, freezing wet half water / snow drop lets. What came to mind is where Vanessa would camp in such wet conditions. As every one knows the prices are extorsion ,one would need bush craft skills to travel on a budget in Iceland lolGreat Video Thanks for your time in making.

I like your camping area and the problem with the glass bottles remind me of why one need a multi-tool on them at all times. You could have used it to open the lid on the glass bottle and help you out there. I love the filter you made from the plastic bottle you found and the coal you put in the filter. I like your homemade fork which you made with your knife and that is a wonderful knife. That is great that you learned something new and is still safe and sugar does melt in the rain ;-).

Hello Vanessa,. Thanks for another fantastic video. What I really admire is you didn't edit out the things that didn't go as planned. I was really impressed with the shelter you built and the water purifier. I always look forward to your videos and I wish you and your family a happy Easter!... God bless.

I have always been lucky with water. I have drank from creeks, streams, trickles of water running down rocks, and even drank snow melt running beside roads. Never filtered it, never boiled it, and never had any ill effects.

Bow drill is hard. Takes a lot of practice and determination to get the technique and materials right. I would only use soft woods for spindle and base because it's easier to create the ash. Once there's enough ash it's only constant speed and pressure can make the ember. Even knowing all that and being taught by Ray Mears, I still fail 9 times out of 10. That's why my EDC always always has fire lighting stuff. So 10 out of 10 for being determined and for trying Vanessa. BTW, 5 mins at boiling point is all that's needed for the water. But wow... I bet you have learnt a lot about what gear you really need and what are your personal limits. I really felt for and admired you too. Thank you

Good video Vanessa, lots of people know how the bowdrill works, but they have no idea what is like to go out in the woods and make one that works without the backyard setup and preparation to make videos. Practice is the only way you know how to do it. I have made many bowdrill sets that I could not get to work and some that do.

I appreciate your effort, as well as your straight forward honesty. Bushcraft is not easy. The bow drill is not easy to master, and even once it is mastered, getting an ember is never going to be easy. I loved your water filter. I am sure it was very effective. Ron Pullen

Using a bow drill is very difficult. Its a lot easier at home when you can control all of the variables but good effort! Great video....thanks

Love what you do! I suggest scratching a line around the glass where you want it to break with a rock or file if you have one. It will create a weakness in the glass and force the break to that area

Hi Vanessa. Enjoyed your video's. Little tip for you or any1 that's reading. If you carry a small ball bearing with you or use a stone does work. Pop it in the glass bottle. Shake the bottle up and down. After few minutes the bottom should just fall of cleanly. I have done it many times. It can be used for filter or funnel. Enjoyed watching you and Lilly too .

Great video and well filmed Wild Woman Vanessa👍 Too bad this adventure wasn't the most comfortable or easy, like you said, you did it the hard way. I'm sure the next one will be a better experience. Gloves🤨!! Vanessa! Safety first. Scary glass bottle encounter. Happy Easter. See you next time. Enjoy!

Glad to see you put the spruce down on top of your raised bed.
My friend and I tried a few years back to light a fire with a bow drill.
You need something to put pressure on the drill from the top, like a handle that you push down on.ie a block of wood or rock.
Anyway.. We got smoke and small embers quite a few times but it was not hot enough to ignite into a flame.
We decided that it was the wood.. Perhaps you use the same wood or a harder wood on a softer wood.
    It's not easy.

Hi Vanessa, an enjoyable video, when making a bow drill make sure the wood for the drill and hearth board are from the same tree and make the drill about the same width as your thumb, hope this helps 👍
