I've made one of the actors behind the characters we all really love, the villains. Now earlier this year we also lost a legendary Disney Villain voice actor, Gilbert Gottfried. Gilbert left behind a legacy as Iago that could never replaced or taken away, so I also wanted to make this video as special tribute to him. Enjoy.

At 3:58 it’s me!! I will never forget that afternoon. 🥰
Thanks for doing 4:45! It looks like an improvisation and she enjoyed it hahaha
Wait what?! That's so cool!
SO COOL!!!
Ultra cool
Damn you sound pretty good!
I find it phenomenal how the actors literally had to dress up and act in real time as well in order to get the movements right. It really shows how far animation has come.
They probably had a fun time. Go to work dress up as you character and speak your lines.
Gotta dress the part to get in the mood
Actually they had already recorded the lines and were lip-syncing. The dressing up was to inspire the animators and help them draw more realistic
They didn’t HAVE to… but a lot of early studios depended on rotoscoping for realistic movement. Might as well throw in a costume, too!
They did that more likely because the animators were using the rotoscoping technique. That’s when you paint over filmed footage. They rotoscope the movements then put it over the painter background. I had to do a very rough version in one of my animation classes.
I love how Dr. Doofenshmirtz is iconic enough to be considered a true Disney Villain.
Yes, yes he is.
He is bad guy, but doesn't mean he is a bad guy.
What film was this character from?
He is from Phineas and Ferb
@@michaelpalmieri7335 He is from a TV show called Phineas and Ferb.
why is no one talking about Jodi Benson doing Vanessa's (Ursula) voice? She even get Pat Carroll's iconic laughs in
It is highlighted (4:50-5:11). She did great!!! Definitely, not sweet Ariel. 🖤
Jodi Benson has my heart forever. That voice captivated me and Prince Eric both.
Wasn’t she the actual voice of young/human Ursula?
I honestly came down here to see if anyone else was going to comment that. She really nailed Pat Carroll's laugh and you could tell she was having fun being evil there.
@@Robynhoodlum she’s the voice of Ariel and Venessa
James Woods’ performance is especially great when you learn behind the scenes that they completely rewrote Hades’ whole personality around him. The original concept of Hades was for him to just be another dark, menacing overlord type of villain (similar to Chernabog or the Horned King). But after Woods decided to try some improv, giving Hades the vibe of a sleazy, silver-tongued salesman, the writers loved it so much that they kept it in.
It's amazing reading that with the benefit of the finished movie. Hades absolutely makes that film what it is, he absolutely steals the show. And that's hard with such an excellent cast! But it's his personality that sells it and I just can't imagine that character any other way, the whole movie would be so so different in tone.
I was actually shocked to find James woods was hades. I'm pretty versed in Disney but never gave a second thought to hades cause Hercules is low on my Disney list
And he enjoys the character so much that he always voices him, even in cartoons and videogames.
I always thought it was weird that Disney cast him without thinking they'd get a car salesman lord of the dead, he always plays a fast talking character. Then I heard him in a DC animated film where he played a bad guy and he sounded so scary! Hades didn't scare me if he wasn't flaming, so I didn't know if he could do it but he was phenomenal. Terrifyingly emotionless, direct and cruel, he was amazing. That's what Disney wanted for Hades. We all agree what we got was better, but its still nice to see him voice act a different role.
They were also originally planning on having Jack Nicholson play hades but scheduling conflicts prevented it but it ended up giving us a much better villain
Jeremy Irons as Scar is the greatest voice over work of all time.
@DJ_Cub Fun fact: Initially, the producers wanted David Bowie for Scar, but he was on-tour at the time that the movie was being made, and they couldn't put it on-hold to wait for him. I think he would've definitely enjoyed the "You're so weird/You have no idea" exchange with little Simba. (3/5/2023)
False. Robin Williams as Genie
Amen! 🙏🏼
I would've liked to see Jeremy Irons up close.
Jodi Benson AS Pat Caroll AS Ursula- that was way more impressive than any disney ballad high note 👏👏👏👏👍
The incredibly meta Jodi B
@@azurephoenix9546 Confused. Jodi was not doing the voice of Ursulla,
@@donnalynn2 Ursula was Vanessa. Vanessa had Ariel's voice. Therefore Jodi was technically Ursula for a couple scenes so she had to be in character.
How is it 2023 and I only just realised it was her? 😩 I’d love to see her play a modern Disney villain role…
RIP to Eartha Kitt as YZMA and Part Carol as Ursula
Pat Carol didn’t play Ursula. Pat Carroll did.
We also lost Gilbert Gottfried (Iago) this year.
@@Cure_Hana Oh god we lost 3 villians in 2021/2 The German voice actor Thomas Fritsch who played Scar passed away in 2021 The original voice actor from Ursula Pat Carroll died this year and now the original voice actor from Iago 🥀
RIP Iago😢
Eartha Kitt won her Daytime Emmy for Yzma on TV. Sadly the award was posthumous.
All wonderful performances, but I think Ken Page does an absolutely phenomenal job as our favorite Boogey Man.
I was totally entranced
It's so amazing
It's truly amazing to see a performer really enjoy their work.
Oogie boogie has always been my favorite when it came to the musical performances in the movie
Came here to say the same
R.I.P. Pat Carroll. She did a good Job on Ursula.
She was Amazing. My Son won't watch Ariel, But he Loves Cinderella for 1967 with Pat Caroll as a Stepsister
I find it remarkable the Johnathon Freeman has been doing almost every Jafar. Even in the original Broadway cast he played Jafar in Aladdin, and in video games as well. Very few have done that role besides him
They even said when they opened the musical he physically looks nothing like how Jafar should but they couldn't imagine it being anyone else
The laugh is absolutely iconic
@Idiotsdoesthings Here's something cool. I've heard that, at first, they wanted Patrick Stewart for Jafar, but he had a scheduling conflict with shooting "Star Trek: Next Generation". I've got to admit that it IS fun to imagine that Shakespearean accent shout, "Get your blasted beak out of my face!" (3/5/2023)
Love how the voice actor for Pete is way smaller than Mickey's voice actor (edit: which is apparently Walt Disney himself :p).
Crazy bc this is also my first time seeing footage of Disney in the booth recording for Mickey
SO looked it up, Billy Bletcher was 5'2" Walt DIsney was 5'10".
Mickey's voice actor was Walt Disney lol
@@BenjaminWirtz
Billy Bletcher was also the voice of the Big Bad Wolf in "The Three Little Pigs," as well as voices for the Tom and Jerry cartoons made by M.G.M.
He voiced him temporarily but was replaced to focus on his other projects
Gaston's voice actor is literally just as good looking as the character. Also even without looking like his animated character, Povenmire can still do the Doof voice.
I love seeing how the voice actors really get into their performances, even when they are not actually seen. They go all out!
voice actors and actresses*
Donna Murphy as mother Gothel is just perfect.
If they ever make a live action Tangled, Donna Murphy has to play Mother Gothel. There's literally no one else who could do it better.
Screw that! Make Tangled a Broadway Musical and cast her as Gothel.
@@Thomas_H._Smith even better
@@Thomas_H._Smith I should let ya know into the woods and play has her playing as the witch
@@mikaladadams If they were to do an actual live adaptation of Tangled, should the get Wendi McLendon-Covey, Meryl Streep or Jennifer Tilly as Mother Gothel?
@@Thomas_H._Smith Yes!
I love how at 13:20 Donna Murphy's face (and eyes especially) are just as intense in real life as Gothel's are in the movie. What an actress she is!
I am absolutely in love with Donna Murphy

Donna Murphy is incredible in anything she does
Am I the only one blown away by the real Gaston? Longer hair, tall, nice build. Wow!
In loving memory of Pat Carroll (1927-2022)
She's gone too? I didn't know that. When did she die and how?

Gee, that's too bad. 🙁😢😕
May she rest in peace. 🕊️
Pat Carroll was a gem...
Oogie boogie's song has always been my favorite because of the singer's great voice. My favorite part 8:55 is when he says "It's much more fun, I must confess when lives are on the line, not mine, of course but yours, oh boy. Now that'd be just fine"
That song Rocks!!! I Like it performed at Disney as Part of the HOCUS POCUS Show
Jesus Jeremy's voice still melts my spine. RIP to all the legends we lost. ❤️
jeremyz not dead good livin boy
Jeremy Irons is alive.
Jeremy isn't dead. He even offered to reprise the role for the (gag) live-action remake. They got James because they knew it wouldn't sell otherwise, but Jeremy is just as iconic as Scar.
Jeremy Irons is very much alive
My dude I had a heart attack when I read your comment. He's not dead thank goodness.
With Pat Carroll and Gilbert Gottfried doing such a great job, I wonder who Disney will pick to live up to their legacies.
RIP Gottfried and Carroll
Impossible
Pat always seemed like she was having a blast.
@@christinaglahn8036 Mmhmm
@@christinaglahn8036 She loved that role.
I think a lot of the problem with the live action films is that the villains are so iconic that they never get them right. I watched Aladdin the other day and as a film it's OK, but Jafar wasn't anywhere near as charismatic or brilliant as the animation and the exclusion of Gilbert as Iago was just criminal. Iago was relegated to a walk on bit character instead of the heart of the movie. His evolution from evil sidekick to trusted friend was better character development than most films manage for the leads.
Yeah. It's incredible how easily our minds accept animation; only when put side to side with actual people doing their lines did I notice how stylized and exaggerated the humans and their movements really are in these movies.
I totally agree. I Like LIVE Action Aladdin for WILL SMITH. I Love the Extra Character/Friend of Jasmine
Live action Aladdin is especially bad out of the bunch. They completely ruined genie as well- no charisma and no magic.
Yeah. They just can’t match the magic of the animation
Never saw the actress for mother gothel she’s so beautiful
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if she secretly had a girl with rejuvenating powers locked away somewhere, because for a 60 year old, she looks good.
I got goosebumps watching her lol
When I hear Kieth David singing Friends on the Other Side, I think it's Spawn showing off his magic.
RIP Gilbert Gottfried
RIP Pat Carrol
😢😢 Lost this year (2022)
That’s just unbelievable
Also the German voice actor from Scar named Thomas Fritsch who died April 2021
Still can’t believe we lost Gilbert Gottfried😢 RIP!

I’m impressed you went that extra mile and got bonuses like Jim Cummings singing for Scar (many didn’t know that), Jodi Benson as Vanessa, and the wonderful Gilbert Gottfried just ad libbing as Iago. You know your stuff. ❤️
I was always so impressed by Jim Cummings matching Jeremy Iron’s Scar so well
@@AuthorZaraHoffman it’s because Jeremy’s voice cracked so, they needed Jim at last minute!
@@jeanhealy3132oh, I know!
Thank you for reminding me how awesome Hans Conried's performance as Captain Hook was!
I was absolutely the strangest child -- I was a _huge_ Hans Conried fan. I had such a crush on him after seeing him in _The 5000 Finger of Dr. T._
Jeffery irons as scar was amazing I could listen to his voice all day
Man, it's always a joy to watch Alan Tudyk perform. Love that guy. 💖
I love how the timing is still so perfect on Jonathan Freeman and Ken Page's performances that the lip flaps still align despite not being the recorded version used in the film. Just freakin brilliant.
Well I did speed up and slow down the animation to make it match perfectly.
Gilbert Gottfried (R.I.P.) and James Woods are amezing 🤩👌
Alan Tudyk also voiced the weasel in Zootopia (forgot his name). While not the main villain, the character pokes fun at Tudyk's Weaselton character in Frozen.
Duke Weaselton
I find it great that he included Doof as an actual villain
It's a shame they didn't have any footage of George Sanders being Shere Khan, he's one of my favourite actors
The way that Jodi, Pat and Ken absolutely ATE those performances !!!! I could watch them all day🙌🏾
Hans Conried was born to be Captain Hook, with or without animation, he IS him
The fact that Pat Carroll, one of my top
5 greatest Disney Villainess VAs of all time, has now passed away is still raw. RIP, Ursula!
Keith and Jemaine's voices are something else. My absolute favorites 😍
Agree!
Which film were they from?
@@michaelpalmieri7335 Keith David (Dr. Facilier) for _The Princess and the Frog_ and Jemaine Clement (Tamatoa) for _Moana._
@@EChacon thank you Ernesto for answering. Their voices always stuck out to me from the moment I heard them in The Princess and the Frog and Moana.
Donna Murphy's (Mother Gothel) voice is just amazing. Love it.
I'll need Keith David's part to be longer...I'ma go watch the movie now
Also, thank you for showing the Kingdom Hearts scenes! You can tell how a lot of the Disney Renaissance VAs are still dedicated to their characters, that they would never refuse to play them.
I... don't think these actors would turn down an opportunity to reprise their roles. In the case of Kingdom Hearts, it was simply to align both an actor's schedule and budget. Kingdom Hearts managed to get around half of the original actors back, while they hired lesser-known actors to fill the blanks. For KH3 alone, they got most the cast from Frozen and Big Hero 6. If it wasn't from the movies, it was from the TV series. Dude, Kevin McNally reprised his role as Gibbs from the Pirates of the Caribeans movies in the 3rd game O_O
You want a bigger mind-blowing fact? Kathryn Beaumont, the original actress for both Alice in Alice in Wonderland (1951) and Wendy Darling in Peter Pan (1953), reprised BOTH roles in the first Kingdom Hearts game in 2002, FIFTY years later.
@@MrJechgo I actually did know a lot of that, I just didn’t want to type a text wall. Lol! Yeah, really the only reason Nathan Lane has rarely reprised his role as Timon is exactly that. He’s usually been already booked with other projects, especially while The Lion Guard was airing.
@@KopaXTani and that's totally fine. As I said, I don't recall any Disney actor hating their roles, so the real reasons are all about "not being available" and "not interested by the paycheck" (It is their livelihood afterall). Otherwise, Square-Enix simply didn't have enough money to spend on actors. I mean, we could have gotten Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as Woody and Buzz for the Toy Story level, but... they probably would have slashed an entire Disney world (or two) in exchange ^^; We didn't get John Goodman and Billy Crystal as Sully and Mike from Monsters Inc, but at least the replacements were spot-on ;) Dude, for some reason, they didn't get Patton Oswalt to voice Remy from Ratatouille, leaving the rat with no lines...
@@MrJechgo gotcha.
Oggie Boggie and Keith David's performance is God like
You just don't get performances like Ken Page's Oogie Boogie anymore
Donna Murphy looked really good voicing her character
This really shows the hard work put into animation. People think it's just drawing. This is so incredible
It's so awesome to see all of these amazing voice actors in action behind the scenes and at table readings! It sucks some of them passed away, but their legacy as Disney characters is one that will never go. Also, I love that first clip, and it actually shows Walt Disney himself voicing Mickey! :)
Jodi Benson behaving like Pat Carol's Ursula is just iconic. She can play the next Ursula.
Santino Fontana is one of the most overlooked stage to screen actors out there. I hope he has an amazing career when all is said and done.
Can I say something crazy ... No
That part killed me 😂
I'm surprised to see Richard White reprise his role as Gaston on Broadway(and he's not the only actor to do so)
People talk about Robin William's improv, but Gilbert Gottfried's improv was amazong too
When the originals are seared in our brains and hearts, the remakes don’t stand a chance!
I was surprised to find the original voice actor for Pete.. Also the best villain voice actors for me are: Donna Murphy as Mother Gothel, Jeremy Irons as Scar, Jonathan Freeman as Jafar and Eleanor Audley as Evil Stepmother and even as Maleficent.. They knew how to interpret their characters well and give them their touch of villainous personality
Don't forget:
Pat Carrol (Ursula) May 5th 1927- July 30th, 2022
Jeremy Irons singing "Be Prepared" will always be the best. Such an iconic villain song.
Are we not going to talk about Gaston launching that kid
I know right.
Jeremy Irons is such an underrated artist but a versatile one whom not everyone really appreciates him much. 😪
Not to mention has a damn good singing voice, I wish he could’ve reprised his role in Lion Guard (not that I dislike David Qyelowo) and Kingdom Hearts.
Including Ken Page was a perfect choice, I somehow have never seen the live footage! 💟💟💟💟😍
While it's great to see these recording of the actors portraying the voices of the villains, I bet a lot of people who happen across this video are shocked to see Walt Disney himself is doing the voice of Mickey in the video of him and Billy Bletcher recording lines for "Mr. Mouse Takes a Trip" (1940)
I knew Walt originally voiced Mickey but it still shocked me when I saw him in the video, I’ve never seen video of him voicing Mickey before! So cool that video exists
OMG Gilbert Gottfried(Iago's voice) just died this year. How sad. RIP 😱🤧🤧🥺

I love princess and the frog and love the villain of the movie. Keith David!
YES DAN POVENMIRE IS IN HERE
Wow! I love this. Especially the classics. The Siamese twins, how they recorded twice was really cool. And obviously seeing wall Tower over this little man, and then their voices are opposite
Santino played the prince in the Broadway version of Cinderella, so this was a natural and appropriate fit for him. Also, he's a stud.
Of course Alan is the one with multiple characters. I love that man!
Ursula scared the shit out of me when I was kid.
I don't know what's wrong with me, but the older I get, the more I love the villans!
We all do.

Jodi Benson as Vanessa is a iconic villian!!!!!
RIP Gilbert. He was one of the most iconic voices in the history of all voices ever heard. I miss him!
I wish Tony Jay was on here as Frollo and Eartha Kit as Yzma . Great video though.
Same! Great video but seeing Tony as Frollo probably would’ve killed me lol, Eartha Kitt as Yzma too, I don’t think I would survive seeing such legends.
Could you do one next of the comedic sidekicks? Examples: Genie, Timon & Pumbaa, Mushu, Kronk etc.

I wish footage existed for David Ogden Stiers as Wiggins, I would kill for that.
Alan Tudyk is a national treasure!

I watch videos like this and I’m reminded that voice acting isn’t just recording lines for a character. It’s so much more!
All of tham was so wonderful and loved by us all
Videos like this really shine the light on all the talented actors and actresses who bring our villains we love to hate to life.
A lot of fun. Thank you very much.
