    Thanks that was extremely cool! I saw a black one at Coney Island Beach this past weekend. It looked fabulous and it was really way way up in the sky. That little trilobite was cute too, but the octopi stole the show!

      Yes, it's hard to beat an Octopus kite for spectacle.

    Finally got around to flying my 26 foot fuchsia octopus this past weekend, loved it, these things fly so well, now I want a 50 footer!

      Fuchsia should show up well! Maybe we'll get to see a video sometime?

    A great video Jim but I almost fell asleep as the music & pair of swimming Octopus was so relaxing. I wish I could get my smaller 8m to fly that well.

      +Kite flying DownUnder.... Carl Gillard You could fall asleep anywhere, any time! Try a bit of sand in the end of your octopus's tentacles, that might fix it.

    They look fantastic! I managed to buy 4 × 8metre octopuses, in different colours from china!

      All the octopuses are good. Actually, the bigger they are, the better they fly - my best one is 23 m.

    Jim, you have awesome videos on kites, flying tips, presentation and how to anchor large kites that so many of us have enjoyed. I would like to see another video on how to tie a daisy chain knot for kites with many bridles such as these beauties. It would be so helpful to many of us 'rookies' with their first multi line kites.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  7 років тому

      I'll try to do that soon, Mark. There is one on Premier Kites' UA-cam channel, which I seem to remember did a good job.

      I saw it Sunday, looked at videos, went to the library for a book, got another website, and now tying the chain.... got to be 100% before I fly that octopus again....loved it's first flight.....

    I have two 8m black ones like this one, available on Amazon. This color is available as well, orange, red, rainbow, and white.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  6 років тому

      I also have a black one this size, and an 8m and a 10m rainbow color, as well as the 23m black one which is, of course , my favourite.. All the octopus kites are good, and fun to fly.

  • @lionharehart
    @lionharehart 8 років тому

    I like this kite. It was your rainbow octopus video that inspired me to get the larger kite because the price was just right, but now that they have the rainbow flames colour scheme I may have to sell my green one.

    • @JimNicholls

      +lionharehart How fickle you are! Not sure where the "flames" name comes from, but it's quite attractive anyway.

    Hey Jim got a quick question I have a 50 foot octopus kite what kind of reel are you using

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  6 років тому

      Every reel I use is an ordinary hoop spool, usually the plastic ones but I do have a couple of wooden ones my friend Peter made. For the bigger kites I usually prefer an 8-inch spool, which is big enough to hold plenty of heavy line but not too big to be easily handled.

    So awesome!Chinese kite market has a lot of low price and good performance kite. However,plagiarism is a big problem; such as some kites were copied from PLK.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  7 років тому

      And I'm quite sure that PLK have got some of their ideas from China! There can be no sole right to something like an octopus or a bird, and as long as each interpretation is different and not a direct copy, then no problem.

      200# or better on these kits Jim?

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  7 років тому

      Depends on the wind, of course, but I usually use 300lb on mine just to be sure.

    I have my eye on one of these gorgeous kites next, as I love my similar smaller black 8m Octopus kite. Deciding on what colour is my biggest problem lol. :)
    * 'Nit picking! ....IMHO the manufacturer of these beautiful kites could definitely improve on the overall look of these kites by adding at least 2 x (3x would be better) the number of simulated 'suckers' as they do look noticeably sparse, ....at least to my critical eye ;)

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  8 років тому

      They're all nice, but getting a colour that stands out well in the sky is probably the most important aspect.

    • @stryker48
      @stryker48 8 років тому

      I agree, that's why I rarely gravitate towards blues. Black, red, green and orange show well up against any sky. White and yellow are also good although a little less so IMHO. "Decisions, decisions!" :))

    • @stryker48
      @stryker48 8 років тому

      I'm tempted to go for the lighter green like yours as I love the way the shadows play off the tentacles, especially with another one in the air at the same time. Knowing myself all too well, I can see a couple of these added to my kite bag in the future, perhaps even a 23m (75ft.) which is perhaps the largest one should attempt to fly by hand. ;)

    I might be interested in buying these. What pound line do you use for flying them?

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  8 років тому +1

      +iFrog It depends on the wind, but I usually use 300lb.

    • @FreeSafety2030
      @FreeSafety2030 7 років тому

      I just bought one of these, and will try it in Myrtle Beach in a couple of weeks. Would 150lb Kevlar line work with winds that might be a little stiff, say 30 mph? And, I take it the longer the line that is out, the higher the pound strength needed?

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  7 років тому +1

      The length of line shouldn't make much difference,(unless the wind is decidedly stronger up higher.) I don't like kevlar line, as it's unpleasant to handle (make sure you wear gloves) and can easily cut other lines that it crosses, (so only use it at a distance from other kites.) At 30mph the kite pulls hard, and although the 150lb line might do the job, I would not trust it unless I'd tested the breaking strain first. Kevlar line from China is a variable product.

    • @FreeSafety2030
      @FreeSafety2030 7 років тому

      Thanks, Jim. I will order some 300 pound line, not Kevlar. I appreciate your advice.

    you seem smart regarding kites, what exact material is best for making these? i have a design i want to make

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  5 років тому +1

      Not smart, I just have a lot of kites! Almost every kite these days is made of ripstop nylon. Of course, you can use plastic or paper if you want something that won't necessarily last long, but the ripstop is certainly the thing to go for.

    • @ThatHippyDuck
      @ThatHippyDuck 5 років тому

      @@JimNicholls that's what i hear, i just don't know which type to get. i want to make a 10 foot hank hill, not a parafoil but an inflatable or even one that could attach to a lifter

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  5 років тому

      The last ripstop nylon I bought came from Emma Kites in China, where they have a good range. The price was good too, I remember.

  • @foxy002000
    @foxy002000 6 років тому

    I just got mine so excited! Then realized I am an utter newbie to big kites because the bridle is confounding. Am I missing pieces? I've found very little info online and Emma of course says... sorry, we don't have instructions :(

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  6 років тому

      Hi Alanna! It's almost unknown for Chinese kite sellers to provide instructions, unfortunately. You shouldn't go far wrong, however, as the bridle is not really complicated. I know there are a lot of lines, but provided you don't get them tangled, all you have to do is tie your line on just above the point where they are all joined and you're all ready to go. Let me know if you have problems, and I'll try to make a little video to show you how, but I think you'll probably sort it out.

    • @foxy002000
      @foxy002000 6 років тому

      You're awesome Jim. I think I did figure it out, it just had a lot of lines like you say. I larks' headed my line to the bridle and I think t's good! Thanks so much for being helpful

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  6 років тому

    I'd wanted one of these for a while and after seeing your video decided to place an order. It arrived really quickly from Emmakites but as is often reported it was indeed not the colour ordered..
    Great value and a great kite but it's still a bit disappointing, so buyers beware!
    cheers,
    Bill.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  8 років тому

      That's unfortunate, Bill. I've usually had good luck with Emma kites, but there has been an occasional slip-up. Some sellers are very unreliable, but I think in general things are improving.

    • @cloudybongo
      @cloudybongo 8 років тому +1

      Hi,
      Indeed, The next one will not be so colour crtical. I'll be taking another punt next month.
      One other thing I'd like to know is how the heck they managed to squeeze it into the tiny bag it came in. I've tried twice (now given up). It's in a big duffle bag instead ;-)
      Cheers,
      Bill.

      Well, ordered up another in a completely different colour scheme so here's hoping this one is more succesful.
      It'd be nice to get it in time for the One Sky One World fly on Oct 9 so I can get some good KAP shots of it and the scenery.

      BIG BLU is here, only 8 days since order and it's the right colour this time, hurrah!!!
      Can't wait to get this 26m version into the sky, will post a video when it's airborne.
      With my gimbal now operational hopefully I'll have some decent above kite shots too.

      Sounds as if you're all set for some fun. The Snake is good, too, but rolling up the tail after you fly it is not so much fun, especially in a high wind!
