Its about a third of the Steam Library on Linux now, it definitely keeps growing. Also Valve doesn't give steamOS away, they are required to release it for free because it is built on Debian GNU/Linux
Awesome work on the video. If someone told me you worked for Valve I'd believe them! I'll be sharing this (to give people better awareness) since it's easily the best done video on the topic to date!
Good video. The production value and information are good enough that this could function as a long trailer or informational video about steam os that could be put anywhere. In fact, Valve has been really bad about things like this and if they posted a link to this video on their website, it would be really good for everyone involved.
Keep up the great work, if you continue to update this with tidbits during the changes over time, I think this will continue to be a HUGE resource to folks. I linked this on the SteamOS wiki, as is your Steam Machine video.
You forgot to mention the *in-home streaming*, the thing that makes all those non-linux games run on your steam machine (provided separate windows PC with installed Steam games is in network)
John Janez Honestly though, in home streaming is not even close to playing it on the original machine. Even with a high end rig doing "all the heavy lifting", the encoding and decoding adds a layer of grain, and reduces the frame rate of the stream to be like playing it over the internet. For example, streaming The Witcher 3, you lose all the high frame rate and detail that make it so gorgeous. I have had high hopes for in home streaming, but just built a separate rig for couch games because it doesn't work as good IRL as it does on paper.
John Janez inhome streaming makes Steam Machines completely obsolete for me, because I can play with the full quality of my desktop machine on my TV, where just a cheap notebook is attached.
Those animations were _gorgeous_, did you make them yourself? Either way, your video gives a clear, concise and accurate description of the OS -- kudos, Linux Gamer! :)
I'm not a pc person but I love console gaming. I just ordered an i7 steam machine from Alienware. The processor that comes in it seems low at 2 gz but I assume that can be changed later. I plan on keeping this machine all SOS. I hope more AAA title begin to come to it. Thanks for making this vid. You're the man.
congratz, what a piece of video, nice editing and effects I m really impressive as your point of view as the voice use to explain it nails. That is good job, keep that kind of work.
I always find it hilarious when Linux fans advocate for Steam OS. "I love the freedom of Linux! And I love the freedom of this proprietary DRM platform that controls all my games!!!"
Im glad someone finally said something about the other features you can install on steam OS like the software centers, web browsers, skype, office, native non-steam games, native non steam windows games, etc.I wish valve would advertise that,it would bring more ppl to give linux a try.
Awesome video! Gaming right now on my Ubuntu 15.04. I have to say the expierence is quite nice. It's so awesome to finally be playing on the platform I love.
debian decided to call their OS debian GNU/linux so calling it by the correct name would be really nice. also respect for this video, it's pretty good.
For a lot of people who think it will, or for some reason, want it to fail, I think it is interesting to note that currently Steam has over 1,200 titles with Linux support currently and SteamOS isn't due to be released until November. That's another 300 titles possibly. So say we have 1,500 at release compared to titles available for each Xbox or PlayStation system at release. It won't be the living room gaming killer out of the box but that is a huge leg up on the competition. I do have high hopes for SteamOS but after November, it depends on Triple A adaption, sadly. We will need bigger companies to start supporting to make it more appealing to some of the bigger gamers. I think if companies like Bethesda or Blizzard decide to port some titles over, that means us Linux gamers have won.
Nothing but useful information. Keep more vids like this coming. Also i read your description, maybe making vids on the most questionable subjects is a great idea for your channel if that's what your thinking of doing.
TheCallumE I use a CAD U37 USB condenser microphone with a shock mount, boom arm, and pop filter. It's a *decent* mic, but I'd like to get a better one. LOL. I also process my voice using Audacity. I normalize, equalize, compress and then normalize again. It's taken me a long time to get to a place where both my audience and I are happy with the sound and quality of my voiceovers. Thanks for the question.
Those motion graphics are so clean! I've decided to test out SteamOS; just waiting for the download to finish. I'm already dual-booting Windows 10 and OS X El Capitan. It's time I tried a Linux based OS. I really hope that SteamOS will blur the divide between consoles and PCs.
Thank you for providing a review of SteamOS. Going forward I *will* download a copy of this platform, and try it out within VirtualBox which is installed and running on my laptop.
I only install steamOS to test the game streaming and it works very well. The computer I installed it on could never run the games on its own, the computer was comprised of old hardware. Makes me what to build a tiny ITX system, using Intel's 4600 graphics solution.
+haz939 I don't believe SteamOS "supports" Intel 4600 graphics right now, but it's certainly an option. You might also want to look at AMD's integrated components. If discreet graphics aren't in your budget or form factor, the A10-line of processors have Radeon HD chips built in. The latest chipsets have better performance using newer drivers.
Everything i wanted to know... You deserve and extra billion likes you answered all of my questions and i think im going to buy a steam console instead of a gaming pc!!
"without having to worry about licenses, if the software is 'genuine,' or mucking about with serial keys." Right, SteamOS is lovely and full of freedom. Pity the same can't be said about Steam itself...
Yes, I know this is an old video, but, it's my first time watching. lol First off, you did an amazing job on the video. However, you findings are not my findings. With SteamOS, most of my heavy titles, like Alien Isolation and Dying Light, just weren't playable. I even had to use my Steam Controller with the included cable. Not sure if that's changed now or not. I run Manjaro Mate and I can run my games on max setting with nary an issue. Steam controller must still be used with the cable, but, I'm not much of a controller user. My hands don't work like they used to. But, anyways, great job on the video. Keep up the amazing work.
Any news on vulcan? Any schedule when it replace opengl? Is vulcan making any impact so new games would be developed for it? What about older, existing games? Or maybe explain what vulcan is and can do?
I've wanted to move to linux for years now. Its getting to the point where I'm thinking of moving to linux now. Its more secure and just works compaired to windows. The only real reason i can think of not moving yet is that all my games wont work yet and they need more software support. Other then that linux is a very good opporating system. In time it will only get better. A lot of softeware will work on linux using something like wine. Give it a try you can all ways use a dual install so you can have the best of both worlds.
Take Ubuntu and then program it to run big picture on startup. Or you could use a react OS type thing instead of Ubuntu to run windows executable files.
+TheDeceivingEye I answered the question. If he wanted a warm welcome then he shouldn't have introduced himself with "hi! please help me harm the linux community"
+Moon Mamun IT crimes? Yeah no. There's not a generic IT crime task force charged with hunting down pirates. That's the job of the owner of the intellectual property being infringed. Shoo, troll.
I tried to install SteamOS in a VirtualBox Virtual Machine (VM) to test out functionality. the SteamOS does not like being virtualized. It installs just fine, however, after it self updates, it craps out entirely. An interesting point.

Why isn't this a real advert for Steam OS? I am a complete PC noob who has owned consoles all my life but I now understand what steam machine/OS is. I will certainly invest in one when released.
Nice video, just a small nitpick: Your point about the Vulkan API is pretty misleading. Yes, if you compare Vulkan to the old generation of APIs (OpenGL4/Direct3D11), it brings great amounts of performance benefits, but nothing stops Vulkan games from running under Windows, and titles built with Direct3D12 (which is just a D3D'ified Mantle really) will run equally well on Windows.
So what are the minimum requirements? I had just had this idea of trying something like a dual-boot of SteamOS running along side Ubuntu. I have a Toshiba Chromebook running Ubunutu with a 16GB solidstate and 2GB of RAM and recently bought a 64GB SD and was wondering if theres was a way to mess around with it. I had heard from a friend that you need about 500GB but he wasn't sure. I hope someone can help me out, thanks.
Good video :) Valve approves and I, you should do this kind of video explaining setting up SteamOS we would love to see that. Thanks - Fríði Karlsson Justesen "President of Faroe Software (FO) and tester for certan companies"
reasons why for steamos desktop gaming? *more than 1600 games atm do not have controller support or is there any intention from the devs, to give their games console like support (according to steams on tags, check it) *And the some 1300 that are supported, which i mean some of the best games on steam (over 300 of which are only partial support) do not do a good job of bringing a console like exp to their games. Who did the graphics for you? I am looking at doing something like this for my channel advert
AngryCentaurGaming I did. This video was entirely my making. Graphics, voice over, animation. I did it all. (Except for the music.)
The Linux Gamer Well you did excellent. What tools did you use? If you don't mind me asking and thanks for the quick answer
This guy is really under rated this was a very well made video
And this guy only has 1000 subs, come on guys get subbing!
Another incredible video man, as always super jealous of your animations and video editing
+Jakejw93 - Linux Gaming "only".
Kinda just saying.
Subbed :\
+kargaroc386 Well Jake has 9000 and he does a titch less than this guy does (No offense jake)
How could a guy who made a video like this only have 3k subs?
+Khalid Abu Shawarib it is called the stupidity of the people who ignore the channel and the good content and go to watch stupid pewdiepie.
***** That's why it is not important how much subscribers you've got,it is important what content you produce.
10 k subs now
+JosephKing75 CBP damn straight m8
Rexide I roast bloddy stupid idiots just because that's my strainght mate style.
I was about to point out so many mistakes, but then noticed... 2015? What the heck, UA-cam?
If ur watching in 2022 steam os will now be based on arch
Its about a third of the Steam Library on Linux now, it definitely keeps growing.
Also Valve doesn't give steamOS away, they are required to release it for free because it is built on Debian GNU/Linux
great video as always, keep them coming!
What about a 2020 retrospective on what SteamOS means now that Proton has 80+% compatibility with any random title on Steam.
Kinda shocking that you don't have a million subs. Really liked the video
This is an excellent, high-quality production which also happens to be quite informative, thank you!
Awesome work on the video. If someone told me you worked for Valve I'd believe them! I'll be sharing this (to give people better awareness) since it's easily the best done video on the topic to date!
+sickley2 Thank you!
Lazy Game Reviews What do you think of my latest video?
The Linux Gamer you did a good job keep it up!
The Linux Gamer Manjaro is my linux distro of choice. Ubuntu is a gigantic mess that will take ages to clean up.
The Linux Gamer wait can you install steamos on a pc?
HeroTeam OrakGaming yes. You can. It's a custom version of Linux. If you know what you're doing you can put it on any modern PC
The Linux Gamer can you put it on a pc that does not have that uiefi thing?
Good video. The production value and information are good enough that this could function as a long trailer or informational video about steam os that could be put anywhere. In fact, Valve has been really bad about things like this and if they posted a link to this video on their website, it would be really good for everyone involved.
This is extremely high quality. You are the best Linux gaming UA-camr out there, my friend. How did you make this?
nice video to watch on my steamdeck
Keep up the great work, if you continue to update this with tidbits during the changes over time, I think this will continue to be a HUGE resource to folks. I linked this on the SteamOS wiki, as is your Steam Machine video.
I absolutely love this video, the graphics and animations are just superb! Thank you for this informative but easy to understand vid :D
You forgot to mention the *in-home streaming*, the thing that makes all those non-linux games run on your steam machine (provided separate windows PC with installed Steam games is in network)
John Janez Holy crap. I can't believe I forgot to mention in home streaming. 0_0
The Linux Gamer if that makes you feel better, streaming shouldn't be considered a solution, but a workaround. ;)

Great video! Anyone can tell you truly put work into them!
AMAZING VIDEO!!! Perfect animations and the best video to introduce SteamOS!!!
Never thought I'd find this video on the Home Page. Great work!
Those animations were _gorgeous_, did you make them yourself? Either way, your video gives a clear, concise and accurate description of the OS -- kudos, Linux Gamer! :)
This has aged so like fine milk... Debian and Gnome, seriously... And big picture mode...
This OS currently runs in the NVidia GeForce NOW. It’s very reliable considering how young it is as an operating system.
Wow! extremely good video, visualy and content wise. And good job explaining the benefits of linux behind steam OS :) keep it up

because it is based off linux, can I install wine and be able to run those "windows only" games?
Maybe, they might have lesser performance than if they were linux compatible.
Thanks for such a perfect description of Steam OS
Still relevant but it feels like this video was quite a few years early
"It will just work."
"So will all my games work on Steam OS? *Probably not*."
whoaw nice video dude, direct to the point and fantastic editing skills! i your subscriber now. :)

Can you play online games like Star Wars the old republic or other online games like that?
Had to sub. Professionally done!
Very nice viedo edition on this one. Keep it up
You've earned my sub with this one.
Very informative and beautifully done.
What is the average cost of a steam machine? (windows version)
Well, that's loud and clear. :)
I know there is a desktop mode , but is there a way to have the OS boot into it on start up, and use it also for conventional desktop applications?
So are Steam Machines like a console but it's just kinda based on steam games?
4:50 Did I see that you can install GOG Galaxy? Because as far as I know, they only planning it (it would be great btw).
Anyway, nice video :)
Cool, this will become awesome.

does pirated/cracked (downloaded form torrent, not genuine) games will work on steam os? please help
Get a job. And no, because you most likely pirated the Windows version.
if you have to ask that question, probably not
+TheDeceivingEye I answered the question. If he wanted a warm welcome then he shouldn't have introduced himself with "hi! please help me harm the linux community"

Is still Worthy in 2018 or nah ?
You can get runonlinux or wine program loader and get the steam exe and then play your windows games

+Charles Baldwin III It probably won't work in a VM since it's essentially Steam Big Picture Mode (a 3D-accelerated UI).
+The Linux Gamer Good point, sir! Thanks for the quick reply. I love Linux. I use Mint 17.3, and OpenSUSE 13.2.
What about the integration with other services and programs? Like Netflix or a game that is not available on Steam, maybe a console emulator software?
Great video, really awesome production, if this was made on Linux, double gratz for you!
+José Júnior (JJ) All of that will be possible on SteamOS with a few configuration changes (mostly just adding Debian repositories to APT, and then installing the programs the same way you would in a Linux distro).
I could not have said it better good job great video. Oh by the way what is the video editor that you use?
