Simply put, Vinnie Colaiuta is one of the greatest drummers to ever play the instrument. He's a MONSTER!
The best way we can learn from Vinnie (other than by watching) is to deconstruct his drumming vocabulary.
In this video, I've transcribed, note-for-note, of one of my favorite Vinnie performances ever (playing the tune "Goe" at the Baked Potato in 2000 with Greg Mathieson (Keys), Abraham Laboriel (Bass), and Michael Landau (Guitar)).
There's literally a LIFETIME of study here, so be sure to download the free pdf (link above) and pace yourself while learning Vinnie's vocabulary.
I've also included a "half-speed" version on my channel as well so that you can digest Vinnie's playing a bit easier.
PLEASE ENJOY!

GETTING STARTED WITH THIS TRANSCRIPTION
TIME SIGNATURE:
This tune is in 14/16, but it's easier to count in 7.
STRUCTURE:
Vamp / In-Head / Keys Solo / Guitar Solo / Bass Solo / Out-Head / Drum Solo
3 THINGS TO NOTICE
CONCEPT #1 : VINNIE PLAYS OVER-THE-BARLINE
Vinnie often plays "over-the-barline," meaning he's not tied to playing the downbeat of every measure.
CONCEPT #2 : VINNIE'S PHRASING
For example, Vinnie often resolves his phrases on the "+ of 7" rather than on the 1. Super hip!
CONCEPT #3 : VINNIE'S USE OF IMPLIED METRIC MODULATION
Vinnie also IMPLIES several time-feels / meters throughout. For example, notice when he plays groupings of 3 on the bell of the ride cymbal while still playing in 7!

Really man, the amount of effort and skill put into this is beyond comprehension (in accordance with Vinnie's playing). This is a real service to the drumming community plain and simple. Thanks!
Thanks!
no kidding! what an achievement to know rhythm this well.
Oh that clears it up! 😂🤯
I think this concert is one for the history books.
And your transcription is ABSOLUTELY mind blowing. Great job.

A masterpiece in transcription. I often come back to this video and drool over the possibilities. So much gold to filter and then condense! Thank you very much, Steve!
I don’t play drums but I recognize Vinnie as the greatest of all time! I sat in the exact position this video was shot from and watched him play things that aren’t human.
It´s an incredibly beautiful and detailed work transcribing this gem! Thank you for sharing!
Awesome, perfect not this world !
NIce! A great representation of a lot of concepts presented in Gary Chaffee's four "Patterns" books.
Thanks man!
Steve, FANTASTIC JOB!..We all know how time consuming this is, and you my friend did a outstanding job. The (1) thumbs down is the damn guy who doesn't even know there is "notation for drumming!!!!! LOL... Congrats, and VInnie would be proud of you!
Hahaha ....the ending ! Man! The whole thing! It is like yahooo!!!
Mate!!!! Thank you! Bravo!
Give that man a musical pullitzer price immediatly holly shit
hahaha thank you!
This is an amazing watch and listen, thanks so much for making this!
Mostly the subdivisions are 1234-1234-1234-12 (or 1 2 quarter notes + 6 sixteenth note tail or 1 2 3 quarter notes + 2 sixteenth notes tail ) and sometimes 123 123 123 12 based on sixteenth notes..
A true Alchemist
Steve, came across this again (from 2 yrs ago I see I thanked you). Just as MIND BOGGLING AGAIN. My question is---did transcribing this add to your arsenol of patterns, rhythms that you can call on and play comfortably now that you took some of the mystery out of what is being played? Thanks Steve!
How long does take you to transcribe this?
Hahaha... The short answer is A REALLY LONG TIME! :)
Damnnnnnnnnn, watched it 3x.................OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vinnie put his all Licks solo that he had and practised at age of 4 only I am now waiting to came vinnie in drumeo

Excellent job!!! I will definitely work on this song with your transcription. Thank you for sharing this info. One question, what soft ware did you use to write down these note? All notes you wrote look very clean and easy to read. Unlike Logic Pro X which I use.
Dude, you are amazing for doing this.

Could u please do his performance of “tumba” with chick corea?
Amazing!
Thank you!
You should get a nobel peace prize for this.
thank you!!!
Is this song called Goe?
2:56 is one of the most insane things I've ever seen and he just improvises it like it's nothing
beautiful
this is INSANE
great job!
It's just my opinion, but overall from any records I had about Vinnie, he has the most bassist-compatible wise with Abe Laboriel. I dunno, but any songs where they played together, their plays were greatly matched-up perfectly, by pure feeling, not relying on "band" counting. This odd time play didn't require any of Abe or Vinnie to count, they just let it flow. There are a lot of songs they were together, and there are also so many example of their perfect matches as the drummer and bassist.
Is it just me, I dunno. But in this song, they did really understand what they need each other, felt like a soulmate, too many of small licks of them matched up perfectly. And I couldn't find any equal level on any bass player as this one, even on his gigs with Karizma.
THANK YOU!
Fucking insane
Insane transcription 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you so much!
I was there
