So interesting to see this. As a young budding musician in Westchester NY in the 70's., I was lucky to have some friends that were good friends and bandmates with him. This is way back when he played in a Jazz Fusion band called "Nite Sprite". Even at that young age, we knew he was really special and going to make his mark. So when we were partying on a Friday night, I think DW was at home practicing and doing drills like sight reading his charts upside down !! Always highly schooled and disciplined as I remember. When he first got the gig with Chick and the Electric Band, it was thrilling to see him on that stage at The Bottom Line of West 4th Street (closed now ....sad....). But it was clear then that we were witnessing the birth of a world class drumming legend that would stand the test of time. And to this day, he lives up to that title very well.
One of THE greatest drummers of all time. And the best thing is that he has become even better as he's aged. Discarding the youthful, physical affectations (as seen in this video), he is now the complete musician, tasteful, musical, restrained, subtle, yet explosive. Just a joy.
This playalong package released in 1987 set the "bar" for what level of (musicianship. production and playalongs) have become today!...... "Dave Weckl -- Contemporary Drummer + One: Book, CD, & Charts" (Manhattan Music Publications)
Since Back to Basics I always believed he was the best drummer in the world to this day in the age of Covid. He was always the most musical one. His phrases are compositions. His feel unmatched. Forget the speed. Forget the complexity. It's the musicality that makes Dave the greatest that ever lived. Just listen to him play. Listen to the music.
You’ve obviously never listened to the people who Dave is influenced by….so go do some research before making such false and erroneous claims. Real drummers and musicians who know history gone call you dweebs out every time. Lame
This is one of those videos I find myself revisiting from time to time for some inspiration. His playing is definitely ahead of it’s time and if I grew up around then and saw this it would have been one of those experiences that stuck with me and defined my overall musical style. A perfect example of how great he is and how many drummers he’s shaped over the years. Absolutely love Gospel Chops and can see clearly from this video how he’s influenced it.
I have been watching him for over 30 years and never seen him make a mistake. How can he be this good and never fuck up ? In the likes of all the newer guys Thomas Lang , Marco Minneman and all the more new comers that are oit there, sorry guys Dave's still superior and Lang and minneman are so good. Dave's been my top guy since 87 and i severely doubt anyone else will take his spot for me. Cheers
omg!! what a feel and level had Weckl back in the day. a total beast!! It's amazing how musicians evolve in time and change certain mechanical procedures and technical aspects in their playing. thanks youtube for this blessings, certainly the best platform on the web
It's interesting to observe Dave's flow from these flashy early days to the much more controlled and concise statements on the drums he offers nowadays. He was ahead of his time back then, as he is now.
@@PaavoLammikko ask justin bieber and beyonce and lady gaga maybe wasn't good for you but 60s and 70s and 80s was wonderful for millions of people for MUSIC and fun and nothing personal don't misunderstand me just facts from the past
Indespite the overgauged hi-hat sound on this clip, Dave is a wonderful and hyperactive technician with a friendly and dedicated attitude! Inspiration is what He is! There are many many good drummers out there, and for instance many great drummers hidden in their domain with just about no exposed life. Though this clip is showing mr Dave Weckl ., I also have to mention Vinnie Colaiuta as well, because Him and Dave has put such trademarks around themselves with devotion to the musical world! Same energy synergy but yet their own style! Thank you Dave! // B
The most incredible thing about this is that Dave is 3 times the drummer than what he was back when this was recorded. He changed the aspect of his playing a bit over the years (i.e. he actually plays *"less"* these days), but his dynamics today are almost unmatched. He is the epitome of always evolving player and musician. By the way, the sheer fluidity of 25:23 and onward is insane even by today's standards and music genres. I mean, I love Thomas Lang, Marco Minnemann, Matt Garstka...but Dave is simply on another level compared to any drummer I heard ever.
Little too much mic on the high hat. Not your fault Dave. Besides that sheer perfection. Best drummer on the planet. I saw him when he played a small club in CT. Was able to stand 10 feet from his drum set the whole show. Blew my mind.
Are you guys that are leaving all these comments amazing and incredible im sure as lot of famous musicians read these comments im j the wondering how good most drummers are that leave all these comments are amazing probably like Zack Dandager and Vinny and Keith Carlock ,abd that long haired gut i always forget his name incredible guy who played with Allan Holds worth and some more ILove Davey wec. First video i ever saw growing up abd said. Wow and his reggae and latin with Michelle Camilio??? God bless you all and Dave w of course
I think his pre-mullet, full-on fro really helped his playing back then, much like his present silver fox look helps him now. He suffered in between these two periods I believe.
Is it just me, or does anyone like the “old” Dave Weckl better? Late 80s early 90s he totally was more aggressive and let lose on those drums Lately he is more like a well Developed machine
I'm guessing this is around 88, 89? This was an exciting time for drumming. There were a lot of clinic tours going on back then. Bozzio, Chambers, Vinnie, Aldridge. I saw all those pre 1990. I graduated from M.I. (P.I.T.) Fall 88. This kind of event happened almost on a weekly basis back then.
Dave weckl was the 1st MODERN 🥁 DRUMMER facts everything that weckl did back in 86-87 had never been done all the licks the way he plays straight a head jazz with a modern 🪢 twist TOP 🐶 DOG!!!
I still have to say that I miss his "old" playing style. His new style is great for "Big Band" and "Acoustic" Jazz, but I miss the "Body English" and emotion that he did in these years. I also miss the "stereo" hi-hat grooves, and also when he would incorporate the second hi-hat into his solos. THESE are the things that set him apart from other drummers and gave him a "signature" style. I admire his "new" way of playing, but just for "Big Band" and "Acoustic" Jazz, but he needs to bring back the "Body English" to his "Fusion" stuff, and his random "Rock" sessions.
Which is funny because Weckl is very particular about his sound. He often has his own mixer he uses to mix his drum sound and then will send to FOH. Guess he couldn't do that here.
Sounds like the error with the recording remix on the Video rather than the actual source, this was prevalent with majority of the VHS like equipments at the time. Sadly even when the Tape starts to rot/degrade the sound also follows specifically high and low frequencies sounding very clipped.

There's incredible drummers, and then there's Dave weckl
So true, he is definitely a legend
There's incredible recording mixes and then there's this! "The Hi-Hat that took over"!! Lol
jajajajajajaa thats totally true
I think what separates Wreck from the other great drummers of this period is his wonderful use of dynamics. And that makes him a very musical drummer.
To my ears, this is drum poetry, full of different types of constrasts, and flawlessly phrased.
This guy has never played the same pattern twice. He’s amazing!
They should call this Hihats live at Musicians Institute featuring Dave Weckl
5 minutes in and my left foot has fallen off!!!
Every modern gospel drummer stole everything from Weckl. He's the man.
Modern gospel is more chambers stuff and colaiuta.
False

Yeah me too, i think it was the best period for original creations in music industry and musicians virtuosity
Amazing! Just amazing, young Weckl!
