One of THE greatest drummers of all time.
And the best thing is that he has become even better as he's aged. Discarding the youthful, physical affectations (as seen in this video), he is now the complete musician, tasteful, musical, restrained, subtle, yet explosive.
Just a joy.
What are the "physical affectations"? Lol I'm confused.
Every modern gospel drummer stole everything from Weckl. He's the man.
Modern gospel is more chambers stuff and colaiuta.
That mic on the hi hat is killin me...:)
It's 1992. Have never seen this before. What a creative thinking and dynamics! Just brilliant!
So interesting to see this. As a young budding musician in Westchester NY in the 70's., I was lucky to have some friends that were good friends and bandmates with him. This is way back when he played in a Jazz Fusion band called "Nite Sprite". Even at that young age, we knew he was really special and going to make his mark. So when we were partying on a Friday night, I think DW was at home practicing and doing drills like sight reading his charts upside down !! Always highly schooled and disciplined as I remember. When he first got the gig with Chick and the Electric Band, it was thrilling to see him on that stage at The Bottom Line of West 4th Street (closed now ....sad....). But it was clear then that we were witnessing the birth of a world class drumming legend that would stand the test of time. And to this day, he lives up to that title very well.
I preferer Dave Weckl of '80/'90. Absolutely wonderful style.
Yeah me too, i think it was the best period for original creations in music industry and musicians virtuosity
The greatest of all time
The album Master Plan is so unique, Island Magic, Tower of Inspiration...
There's incredible drummers, and then there's Dave weckl
So true, he is definitely a legend
There's incredible recording mixes and then there's this! "The Hi-Hat that took over"!! Lol
jajajajajajaa thats totally true
I think what separates Wreck from the other great drummers of this period is his wonderful use of dynamics. And that makes him a very musical drummer.
As good as He is here, He's 100 times better now!
That Seinfeld bass tho
And Jerry on the drums
Since Back to Basics I always believed he was the best drummer in the world to this day in the age of Covid. He was always the most musical one. His phrases are compositions. His feel unmatched. Forget the speed. Forget the complexity. It's the musicality that makes Dave the greatest that ever lived. Just listen to him play. Listen to the music.
Exactly!
Don’t say that to a Buddy Rich weenie sucker 😂
@@poohead8022 LOL
The ((( age of covid )))
Age of Covid?! Lmfao 😆😂
To my ears, this is drum poetry, full of different types of constrasts, and flawlessly phrased.
This guy has never played the same pattern twice. He’s amazing!
This playalong package released in 1987 set the "bar" for what level of (musicianship. production and playalongs) have become today!...... "Dave Weckl -- Contemporary Drummer + One: Book, CD, & Charts" (Manhattan Music Publications)
The world was a happier place back then....
No.
Yes the world was happier place back then not for everyone but it was great music on every style of music
Sharon Lyle Ok, how exactly does that differ from today then?
@@PaavoLammikko ask justin bieber and beyonce and lady gaga maybe wasn't good for you but 60s and 70s and 80s was wonderful for millions of people for MUSIC and fun and nothing personal don't misunderstand me just facts from the past
Brought to you by L'Oréal.
HAH!!!
Pretty boy looks like a SISSY!
Breck... ha
And about the drummer what can you say ? You are pathetic , guy !
Thing's are so much better today with the millennial man bun.
can't hear the hi hats
🤗hehehe
The mix is too god damn low. S'gotta be louder than this.
😂👍 KILLER playing though, classic "mutant-beast"-Dave‼️🙂👍
Your comment made my day Reuben, thanks for the laugh!
I agree the hi hat is tuned way to loud vs snare!
Dave in beast mode. You don't always see him go all out like this.
For sure 2:55 just one example
Are you guys that are leaving all these comments amazing and incredible im sure as lot of famous musicians read these comments im j the wondering how good most drummers are that leave all these comments are amazing probably like Zack Dandager and Vinny and Keith Carlock ,abd that long haired gut i always forget his name incredible guy who played with Allan Holds worth and some more ILove Davey wec. First video i ever saw growing up abd said. Wow and his reggae and latin with Michelle Camilio??? God bless you all and Dave w of course
I have been watching him for over 30 years and never seen him make a mistake. How can he be this good and never fuck up ? In the likes of all the newer guys Thomas Lang , Marco Minneman and all the more new comers that are oit there, sorry guys Dave's still superior and Lang and minneman are so good.
Dave's been my top guy since 87 and i severely doubt anyone else will take his spot for me. Cheers
Absolutely right
He is the king👑
Holy crap! File this one under "That just happened". Legendary Dave, legendary period.
It's interesting to observe Dave's flow from these flashy early days to the much more controlled and concise statements on the drums he offers nowadays. He was ahead of his time back then, as he is now.
This is one of those videos I find myself revisiting from time to time for some inspiration. His playing is definitely ahead of it’s time and if I grew up around then and saw this it would have been one of those experiences that stuck with me and defined my overall musical style. A perfect example of how great he is and how many drummers he’s shaped over the years. Absolutely love Gospel Chops and can see clearly from this video how he’s influenced it.
remembering watching this vhs in MI library back in 2003. Incredible.
As usual, the king Greasy! Always in the pocket!
Top of the top…. 😍😍😍😍😍
Amazing! Just amazing, young Weckl!
That's some funky Seinfeld music right there
Good lord! The man is an infinite well of ideas - he never repeats himself!
They should call this Hihats live at Musicians Institute featuring Dave Weckl
It's amazing.
How sound quality has changed over the years.Man this would have sounded great with a little compression...
NOTE TO SOUND GUY: "Clip a digital wave form, go to jail! It's a law & it's a good one!"
👍WECKL IS A MUTANT-BEAST!!!!
Gold!! What an absolute monster.
saying he's the best is still an understatement..
My favorite drummer. No one else comes close.
omg!! what a feel and level had Weckl back in the day. a total beast!! It's amazing how musicians evolve in time and change certain mechanical procedures and technical aspects in their playing. thanks youtube for this blessings, certainly the best platform on the web
Wearing a wifebeater, tucked into his pants...love the 80s
16:30 - 18:30 are funky as hell. As known as he is, I still believe he is underrated.
Love his 5x13 signature snare. I still have mine and it plays amazingly well.
Legend 🇺🇸
Wearing a Drummers Collective shirt at MI, what a rebel.
LOL
Was gonna mention this haha, dude doesn't GAF
World No.1
Weckl'is on FIRE!!!
(👍 Dave's ALWAYS on fire!!!🔥)
I agree with you guys. Despite the mics making his cymbals sound like poo, i'm still diggin it!
Siempre fue un animal!
Little too much mic on the high hat. Not your fault Dave. Besides that sheer perfection. Best drummer on the planet. I saw him when he played a small club in CT. Was able to stand 10 feet from his drum set the whole show. Blew my mind.
Dave is my best inspiration
Gotta love Dave
GOAT
Drummers Collective, my school of music. The best drums school in the world.
Spetacular as always Dave Weckl!!!
Awesome to look at! He plays so smooth. Him, along with Vinnie and Jo Jo, above in my top list!
Such a great player - so glad he fixed his posture though - he wouldn't be playing today if he hadn't
Dave weckl was the 1st MODERN 🥁 DRUMMER facts everything that weckl did back in 86-87 had never been done all the licks the way he plays straight a head jazz with a modern 🪢 twist TOP 🐶 DOG!!!
So that's how you do it! I get it now.
great deve weckl
Is it just me, or does anyone like the “old” Dave Weckl better?
Late 80s early 90s he totally was more aggressive and let lose on those drums
Lately he is more like a well Developed machine
IMO, this was Dave’s BEST drumming and technique. Even better than today. I wish he didn’t change his style/technique.
Man, that snare sounds awesome...!
I Love watching these videos. How I learned.
Indespite the overgauged hi-hat sound on this clip, Dave is a wonderful and hyperactive technician with a friendly and dedicated attitude! Inspiration is what He is! There are many many good drummers out there, and for instance many great drummers hidden in their domain with just about no exposed life. Though this clip is showing mr Dave Weckl ., I also have to mention Vinnie Colaiuta as well, because Him and Dave has put such trademarks around themselves with devotion to the musical world! Same energy synergy but yet their own style!
Thank you Dave!

Absolute master of drumming......love Dave 4ever, and now we want Vinnie!!!!!!!
I think his pre-mullet, full-on fro really helped his playing back then, much like his present silver fox look helps him now. He suffered in between these two periods I believe.
Dude looks like John Rambo.
23:25 - damn, his groove is unbelievable.
His kick timing is impeccable, like jeeeeez
👍🙂 LOVE the "time displacement"!!! Dave's a drum machine but with incredible "feel"!!
MEGA ! MEGA! SUPER!
The most incredible thing about this is that Dave is 3 times the drummer than what he was back when this was recorded. He changed the aspect of his playing a bit over the years (i.e. he actually plays *"less"* these days), but his dynamics today are almost unmatched. He is the epitome of always evolving player and musician.
By the way, the sheer fluidity of 25:23 and onward is insane even by today's standards and music genres. I mean, I love Thomas Lang, Marco Minnemann, Matt Garstka...but Dave is simply on another level compared to any drummer I heard ever.
I like more the way of playing of this era than the current one
Didn't know that Bon Jovi plays drums. Damn!
21:25 that ninja move
Esta interpretación deleita a los amantes del jazz, con su peculiar estilo Dave nos deja escuchar un derroche de talento y buena música.
master of masters
Que maestria ! Dave weckl gênio , quanta coordenacao !
It's kinda funny how many people are impressed with gospel chops drummers nowadays, and Dave was doing all these crazy things since the 80's. I've said once and I'll say it again: Mr weckl, Mr. Chambers, and Mr Colaiuta are the best drummers alive.
Mostruosidade mestre daved weckl. Tooop lembrar-se bateras unidos jamais será vencidos ☕ muito bom.
I had a pair of those short red vic firths of his the signature sticks. Anyone else have those sticks? back that was like '88.
I've got the dark red sticks, but they're longer than standard sticks.
Yes
@@joshuajuaire8757 👍
I still have to say that I miss his "old" playing style. His new style is great for "Big Band" and "Acoustic" Jazz, but I miss the "Body English" and emotion that he did in these years. I also miss the "stereo" hi-hat grooves, and also when he would incorporate the second hi-hat into his solos. THESE are the things that set him apart from other drummers and gave him a "signature" style. I admire his "new" way of playing, but just for "Big Band" and "Acoustic" Jazz, but he needs to bring back the "Body English" to his "Fusion" stuff, and his random "Rock" sessions.
Sin ninguna duda el mejor!
Friggin hell man.... I can't even play this on my air drums.
Dave Weckl doing gospel chops before they were popular
Thanks for uploading this. Dave and his cleanest.
It's just practice time for him
Insane 🔥🔥🔥
Sick drumming
19:11 I loved his playing "Tower of Inspiration", one of my favorites.
you like it
Great!!!!! On fire!
One of my BEST!
I saw him give a clinic in North Carolina with this setup I think... after "heads up" was out
Amazing drummin'!!! Dave's haircut vs Vinnie's 80's pornstache...
The porn stash wins. Barely
👍🤣😂‼️
O cara já fazia o que chamam de gospel shops, antes de todo mundo!
1 word: legendary
Master!
Как всегда - смотришь, что от куда, а он уже давно играет дальше....!! 😉 Дэйв крутяк!
The Silvester Stallone of Drums xD
He used zildjian "A Pollo" cymbals... Ok no.
His explosiveness comes from the hair
Hey hey hey, can you turn the volume down on the Hi-Hat??
A bottomless pit of riffs!
savage!
Weckl at his best..
Dave owned a non-black shirt!!
nossakkk toca demais.
Sempre ottimo Giacomino Weckl ! Col capello truzzo.....
