      Zaid Idris Let's pretend I'm clever and say that, yes, yes I was.
      Deliciousbutter 500 years seems a bit long... In less than 100, we've made amazing advances across all areas of scientific/technological advancement necessary for in-depth genetic modifications to be feasible.
      In another 100... Well, tweeking the genes of an embryo to increase the likelihood of beneficial traits doesn't seem all that far off, certainly no more so than a pocket-sized computer that responds to voice commands and offers quick/easy access to a repertoire of our entire species' combined knowledge would seem to someone from 1914.

When I stated to listen again I got good grades. It proves, "intelligent" or not, you have to concentrate on what you're doing and don't let your own arrogance get in the way of that. Logan Ondos But a lot of parents already do that...
      "You should be a doctor", "my son's going to be an engineer!", "little Dave's gonna be a lawyer like his dad!". Most families and society as a whole already expect a lot of people, this is just the next step to that.
      And even if you don't wanna follow everyone's expectations, I doubt someone would disagree to having been born being smarter/prettier/stronger than average...

    • @loganondos6559
      @loganondos6559 10 років тому +5

      Just because the majority of people do something doesn't mean you have to. Do what you think is right.
      Creating "better" people would not eliminate feelings of inadequacy. It would only create competition. No matter how beautiful/smart someone is, they are still susceptible to feelings of inadequacy if they don't love themselves for who they are (as corny as that sounds)

    • @Krypto137
      @Krypto137 10 років тому +2

      Logan Ondos And I agree.
      That's why I said that if you wanna go against societal expectations, do it. Really, you should do it regardless of your skills.
      But even so, having an advantage over the average is never a bad thing. Not something a lot of people would complain about anyway.

      Have you ever seen the movie Gattaca. If we don't allow everyone to have access to gene therapy it will create a huge disparity between those wealthy enough to afford it and the poor that can't. Now rich people will even be able to live longer and they will be intellectually more advanced. This creates an unsurmountable level of discrimination. Why would a company purposely hire people that are inherently less efficient than other people. So then we have people who have had gene therapy being exclusive members of society. There's some more but that's the major issue

  • @SuperStingray

    The whole reason Darwinism worked up to this point is that there's enough variety in our species so that some can function even if the population as a whole fails. Even if we could be able to make people born with greater potential in particular fields we risk losing the ability to create new potential by shrinking the gene pool, and that can have devastating consequences for a species built around intellect and creativity.

    I'm pretty nerdy and get excited about most theoretical scientific advancements. I would go ahead and confidently say I would merge my body with technology or alter my genetic structure for the better if possible but one thing that I have always hated the idea of is altering children before birth. A more intelligent race, okay, I could get behind that but choosing if they're musical? I don't know, I don't like it, the randomness of people in the world is beautiful and everyone deserves the right to choose their own path. Kindof went off and ranted on a very small point of the video but its something that has always stood out to me.

    Who is to say that advanced intelligence is solely a result of genetics? There are so many other variables to consider when determining the outcome of a developing mind. I personally have a well-developed mind and I credit it mainly to my interests and pursuits over the years. Even as a child my interests aided in developing creativity and pattern recognition and my teenage years were focused almost solely on deductive reasoning and abstract thought through the medium of writing. I believe that my genes are quite good, but because of my pursuits I have an intellectual advantage over my family and extended family. If television and sports were my pursuits I would be a completely different person.
    Hope I don't come off as braggy, just wanted to give an example and I know this example better than any.

    I have an IQ of 92 and I wouldn't change myself or my children. Intelligence is not the only aspect of a person. There is personality, social skills, life skills,... they are essential too. I'm not very bright but for some reasons, all of my friends are super smart. And one thing I notice about them is that they usually lack motivation. They hardly ever fail anything so when they do, they get really depressed and cannot stand up on their own .Everything was easy to them and they lose interest in learning.
    What I'm trying to say is, appreciate who you are, and improve yourself naturally. In the end, your success will feel much more satisfying than that of those smarties :P

      When you are given everything so easily, you actually stop caring about getting or not. Such people become more simplistic. It's like, they understand so much that it actually bums them out.. seeing how nothing really matters, or so. Might not be bad, as a simple life can be good too..
      Anyway, for a 17 year old girl, I'd say you understand more about life than some people I know. Keep struggling and keeping yourself busy, that's they way to be "happy".. or ignorant, I don't know.

      True, but there is currently a large proportion of people that don't even care to learn about basic science. +Johnny Luken But there comes a point where you either cannot learn anymore or you simply grow bored of learning. Do you think Albert Einstein wanted to spend every waking hour in a lab or giving lectures? Humans need more to life than knowledge.

    • @Finnfox66
      @Finnfox66 8 років тому

      Johnny Luken Yea, it's very hard to predict. I usually think it the way that if we would just get more intelligence, we would use it to do dumb things because our unpredictable feelings would still lay basis for our actions. If we would want to have perfect intelligence, our rational thinking should be able to handle all the things that human mind is handling with feelings at its current state of intelligence and replace the feelings in many occasions.
      It might be possible to achieve the super-like intelligence and still have the feeling-based thinking, but it would basically require elimination of all the things in our feelings that make us do bad things because of things like selfishness. Otherwise we would stil cause problems to each others, which would not make us all that intelligent in the end.

    Hooray for Gattaca.
    Focusing too much on individual traits could prove disastrous. We live in a world with lots and lots of smart people and lots and lots of problems so perhaps pure intelligence is not the solution? What is there to say there would not be some unforeseen (which never happens in science, amirite?) consequence?
    Also, drawing from the limited anecdotal evidence I call "my entire life" there appears to be an inverse relationship between intelligence and happiness. There are plenty of exceptions to this rule, but the trend is fairly apparent.

    • @Krypto137
      @Krypto137 10 років тому

      There's no really any relationship between being smarter and being unhappy. It's just that the smart, happy people don't go around yelling "OMG I'M SO HAPPY YOU GUYS" while people who feel bad normally let you know...
      And sure, we live in a world with lots of smart people and lots of problems, but there's no reason to think intelligence is not helping to solve them. I mean, how can you even solve a problem in the first place if you're not smart enough to understand it? I sure can't fix my car without knowing a bit of mechanical engineering first. More smart people would just mean more minds working to solve problems.
      As to unforeseeable problems, there's no way to know that without first trying, is there? If you're never going to try new things because something might go wrong, then we should have never changed over to agriculture or mechanized labor (because look at what's doing to the planet!) and should've just keep being hunter-gatherer nomads forever.

    • @donfolstar
      @donfolstar 10 років тому

      kryptospuridium137
      Lots of smart people creating new problems too. That isn't to say that smart is bad, but maybe we, quizzically, romanticize intelligence when it turns out there are other attributes more suited to solving problems (diligence?) while intelligence is pressing the button labeled "do not press".
      I think equating planting a few crops to dicking around with the genetics of a species is a false equivalency of the highest order. Maybe, just maybe, we should do some testing and longitudinal studies before jumping on the "gattaca babies for all" train.

    The assumption here is that the particular genes the super intelligent possess are somehow beneficial in every way. What if they're all really susceptible to a certain disease? What if they're all somewhat likely to have a child like Hitler? I'm not suggesting that only negatives exist, but that perhaps there needs to be further thought before just assuming the smartest baby is the "best."

      Jesus Lopez Your right that it would not be an abortion but your wrong about embryos not being alive. Basic science; dead things do not spontaneously become living things. When a female sex cell is combined with a male sex cell they combine to form a zygote. A zygote is a living cell with unique DNA that divides several times to produce the cluster of cells known as an embryo which then continues this cycle of dividing cells to build and maintain a body until natural death from old age or disease or you know a tragic surfing accident, therefore it has life...by every scientific standard anyway.
