I remember this series and it was done so well in the 90's....This gothic story with Ben Cross is awesome as Barnabas Collins. Brutally convincing, revengeful and mysterious. He was an amazing actor with fantastic co-stars too who helped this show be a great and way under-rated series. With huge stars too! Jean Simmons & Roy Thinnes!
i wish dark shadows (1991) would be re-released on dvd (or preferably on) blu ray with the bonus material found on the vhs release (ie episodes 1,12 & dark shadows: resurrected, restored day for night scenes, restore the original aspect ratio, etc.).
I remember watching the original as a child and LOVED it! When I first heard of this back in '91, I arranged my schedule to be home with friends every Friday evening (I know...what a dork, huh..lol). I thought the REVIVAL was INCREDIBLE! There were a few linesin the flashback sequences that were a bit awkward, but overall, the production the level of acting was, in my opinion, superb! I loved the feeling of it. I remember that very last episode waiting to see what was going to happen for the next season..and nothing. We were so disappointed. That travesty that Depp and what's his face created was just...wrong. They made a joke of a beautiful story. I hope, someday, someone will have the opportunity to make a new version of this that's true to the original. But, since Depp owns the rights, now, I doubt that will happen.
I watched the original as a child too and loved it, and the '91 version. EVERYTHING about the Johnny Depp/Tim Burton version was disgraceful and horrible. No new version should be attempted, and we both know it. Johnny Depp's life and career are now in ruin, as they should be, ever since he made the horrid 2012 film.
Oh no I didn't know that Depp owned the rights to this. That Burton movie was so bad it made a mockery of the Barnabas character and his undying, obsessive love for Josette. I hated that film so much. This 91 series was amazing and thankfully Dan Curtis was involved so maybe that's why this revival was so good. This show and the original series means so much to me, I love everything about them from the sets, the music, the acting...the whole atmosphere of them is so addictive. ❤️
Hah! My mom was telling me how she used make sure she was home every friday to watch this show. We found the show on amazon. Im excited to watch it for the first time when it gets here.
I remember when this first came on. I was still living at home and my mom was awaiting the premiere eagerly. She talked about it but I just turned my nose up at the whole thing...why I don't know. When it aired, she watched it religiously and I ignored it...then it was gone. A year or two later I moved away and soon after mom's health began to fail and then she passed away. Now this brings back such bittersweet memories - why didn't I watch this with her? We could have had so much fun talking about it and sharing the spooky fun. I'm so sorry I was such a jerk.
I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. After my mother died, I got upset whenever “Johnny Belinda” came on TCM because she was such a fan of Jane Wyman in this film. It’s funny how you remember lost loved ones because of a tv show, a film or perhaps a song.
I heard that Dan Curtis was planning to bring back some of the original DS actors for cameo appearances if the NBC DS series returned for a second season. It would have been cool to see Jonathan Frid as possibly an older Collins family member. Or Kathryn Leigh Scott as Roger Collins’ new girlfriend. Or John Karlen as Professor T. Elliott Stokes. Ah, what might have been.
They should make a remake and not some fast shit like the Johnny Depps versio, but like... Penny Dreadful kind of series... This was gold. And still is...
The show was canceled on March 22, 1991 after only a single season and 12 episodes due to the interruption of the NBC news coverage of Operation: Desert Storm.
Speaking of the Gulf War in was involved in the Gulf War at this time and never saw saw this series, I was a big Dark Shadows fan of the original series
@@paulpisano8538 I didn't know you hated the 1991 series so much paul, as to even compare it to the joke you mentioned. Fortunately "The Johnny Depp" debacle ruined his career---and life.
@@paulpisano8538 Thanks for your reply, Paul. Looking at mine earlier, I think it may have come across as harsh, and made assumptions that you've just clarified as not true, so I apologize to you. I'm so glad you loved the '91 series too, and Ben Cross as Barnabas. I also feel Barbara Steele as Julia and all the other cast members 'clicked' together in an equivalent way. The core 'couple' is Barnabas & Julia. Loved Joanna Going as Victoria/Josette, a lot. Because this was a prime-time series they had to condense & accelerate the story in a way they didn't need to as a daytime drama. This series was supposed to be a 5 year primetime series, going to 1996! Furthermore, original stars were slated to be incorporated into this series, oh yes! Lara Parker, Kathryn Leigh Scott, John Karlen, Jonathan Frid (!) and more in different roles. It must be remembered that 1991 was still close enough to 1967-'68 for this to have worked beautifully, Paul. Not only because the actors weren't that much older, but the mentality and sense & sensibility of that time was largely still intact. I also feel if the series had been on ABC (the original network) would have helped. NBC is notorious for cancelling shows at the drop of a hat, then and now, One more recent example (though now 8 years ago) was the cancellation of 'Harry's Law' with Kathy Bates. They were having a TERRIBLE 2011-12 season and that GREAT David R. Kelley drama (he of Boston Legal) was their #1 rated drama, and they cancelled it. I'd like to write to you again on this if you'd like, and hear what you have to say---especially on that 'inside info' I had on the '91 DS. The 5 year original plan, incorporating the original stars and more, and how f----d NBC is, then and now. Thanks Paul.
I love the both the original DS& the remake.I watched the original for the 1st time in 2015 & watch it each morning on Decades tv channel. The reboot was way too short lived. IMO it was the best remake of any tv series ever. So many others were awful, but this was really well done& the casting was great for the most part. I only didnt like the actress in the role of Maggie or the way her character was so different from the orginal. Too bad the show wasn't given more of a chance. I would like to see another remake in 2021. If they pick the right cast & have good writing I think it could be a huge hit.
Like Barnabas, DARK SHADOWS keeps coming back to LIFE! Loved the original and both DS films! This 91 reboot had great promise that was broken 💔 by NBC! 😠 😡 😤. Personally Loved the 🏕 camp Johnny Depp film and kept hoping for a sequel!
Que chevere esta mini serie, la vi cuando era niña aca en Ecuador y después de tantos años la vere de nuevo. Por fin encontré los capítulos completos, la música al inicio es de terror . Pero te atrapa y no puedes dejar de verla
Debuted the night the Persian Gulf War started. I was flipping between this and CNN (when CNN actually did news). I think this show might have lasted longer if it got off to a better start. It was good--bur definitely not even close to the original series.
Roy Thinnes is an excellent actor, and turns is a great performance as Roger. However, Louis Edmonds was too hard an act to follow. Luckily, not all the viewers remembered the original series.
Someone described the brother/sister scenes between Louis Edmonds and Joan Bennett as “a study in icy disdain.” I loved how the pompous and cynical Roger would scoff at all the alleged supernatural occurrences at Collinwood until he was finally confronted by the evil ghost of Quentin Collins.
The sequence you mentioned comes from Episode 9. Unfortunately, I can't upload it, as it is under copyright and available for purchase on DVD. On the bright side, it's also available for streaming on Hulu. They are constantly offering free trials of their service, so you can always watch it there.
Does anyone know if the scene between Barnabas and Joshua from the OS repeated in the revival. My father was watching a rerun of the original and was throughly hooked by the father talking about the honor of the family, and the disregard that Baranabas showed for his family. Thoroughly hooked. Then Baranabas said, "I am a vampire!" and my father had that "What a crock!" look in his eyes and stopped watching The revival might have been able to work the dialogue where the realism of the scene was not abruptly slapped.
I liked the 1991 Series as much as the original series. It's too bad it was constantly preempted by the Gulf War Coverage. I'm sure that's what hurt it in the ratings. And just when it was really getting interesting with the last episode when Josette/Maggie barely returned from the past, after almost being hung as a witch (Dr. Hoffman just barely revived her!) I remember after she awoke, she and Barnabas both looked at each other, with looks of recognition. When she awoke and returned to the present, she and Barnabas realized that Josette now knew he is a Vampire! And the series just ended there! The CW on Channel 11 tried to make a new DS Show, produced I believe by Dan Curtis' daughter. I saw part of the pilot episode on UA-cam, but I wasn't impressed by it! It seemed gruesome! R.I.P. Ben Cross, Jean Simmons & Dan Curtis. I miss you all!
It was a tremendous series, cancelled before being given the proper chance. I think it might have (or more likely) had it aired again on the original ABC network. This 1991 series was the last chance in the last decade of the 20th for Dark Shadows, as the 21st century has so proven.
This was really done well, and Ben Cross was a perfect Barnabas Collins. I don't know why NBC canceled it in the middle of the story line? The Johnny Depp version was garbage and the worst !

Blame Tom Brokaw. He's the one who kept interrupting with special reports.
