  • We continue our 6 month project, the tent is complete, windlass and capstan's are removed. We diagnose the cause of the crack on the underside of the hull and check in with the engineers.

It has been so much fun to be given a window into so many of the aspects of AWOL's, the many people who serve her and your life, as well. Well done all around.

I am really enjoying this shipyard series. It is super interesting to learn so much of what goes into maintaining a super yacht.

Thank you Captain. I appreciate the videos of the inner workings of the yacht. I was in the aviation world for a good portion of my adult life and have been curious how the yachts work. I hope that when I pull the trigger, my Captain will be as knowledgeable and professional as you. Again, thank you for the videos. It gives us technical people something to watch and learn from. Be safe!

Great overview with the areas you and your surveyor are supervising. It must feel good (at least you look happy) to have this all attended to in proper form. All the best to Craig and Will with their Y3 Engineering skills. I trust your former engineer (he seemed camera shy... not the best for a Vlog channel) has the best in his new undertakings. Still catching up.. You're already sailing in 2019!

Love the videos, only feedback would please move the camera slower. It’s difficult to get a idea of what you are talking about when the camera is rapidly moving.
Also, if you have a gimbal mount for the camera you are using, that would help a great deal toward stabilizing the video.

Dude on a computer: Here's a method you might use to find info about the AWOL and other vessels similar to it. 1) For specifics about AWOL, perform a Google Search for "AWOL Yacht" and almost all technical and rebuild information is returned in links for reading. Or 2) perform a Google Search for "San Lorenzo SD122" and information is returned on a couple other similar vessels as well as AWOL. Happy reading!

What’s the budget for the overhaul?

How often is a overhaul like this done? It seems pretty thorough.

This is their 10 year survey and is very comprehensive. Normally big surveys occur every 5 years but the classifications you have (RINA, MCA etc) determine what is assessed and when. Lifting the boat annually for inspections of hull and cleaning etc are normally done too. Surveys are really expensive but every commercial vessel has them not just superyachts. Even my little home built boat had to have an MCA survey to operate. Due to its size and how it operates it was nowhere near as extensive as this.

How does an EOOW III/1 Unlimited fit in with yacht engineer CoC's? MSNs make it sound like the Y4/3/2/1 are something different

Did you all still live on the boat during all the work being done or do you stay somewhere else

Thanks for the update on the AWOL's haulout. I've heard and seen some reports of your area getting hit with some nasty weather. How did you folks and the ship fair?

How much is all this work going to cost the owner?

  • @lanceboothe4668

When all this work is going on, I see that you and the engineer are working (year round) but what about the rest of the crew. Do they work year round as well and/or what do they do?

Can you give us normal cost for something like your 10 year certification.... My real question is after 10 year would it be cheaper to buy new or refurbish? Love the Vlog

    • @eaunan
      @eaunan 5 років тому

My expertise falls into 30+ years helping corporate maintenance officers and maintenance managers -- in process manufacturing, large fleets of vehicles, or facilities like hospitals or university campuses -- answer your exact question, namely: Is it better to repair or replace?
The question is applicable across the spectrum from small components all the way along to the large entirety of a vessel, aircraft, building, or production facility. However -- unlike in the public / private business sector -- a fully private (no chartering) super yacht owner is NOT concerned about ROI per se, they are concerned about excellence, prestige, beauty inside and out, and perfection. Ego.
SB, I haven't forgot your question, I'm getting to it (repair vs replace?)... the yacht owner that charters and/or is always in the market to sell the vessel still isn't driven by ROI, but instead he or she is driven by BRAND recognition. For example, is the yacht known throughout the yachting industry to be the cleanest, best engineered, best upholstered, best hospitality, best linens, best foods, best flooring, best servers, best driven/docked/anchored, best captained / best crewed, best toy filled, most enjoyable yacht experience echoing throughout the industry every day in word-of-mouth and everyday in each port were people watch, as possible??
Notice in both scenarios of owning a super yacht, neither is concerned about ROI, but your question is still applicable: repair or replace?? Or as you put it: refurbish or buy new??
The AWOL yacht is US$11.3M+ to purchase without the 2019 up-fit completed this spring -- that number is your basis for answering the question "is it less expensive to purchase new?" Based on my understanding and experience -- and unfortunately SYC cannot confirm costs which is understandable -- the refurbishment (and a big h/t to SYC to show all the detail of this extensive up-fit across all these videos) costs were 25% best possible case, 33% most likely case, and 40% worst possible case of the asking value of the yacht.
Now here's where the private and charter yacht owner differ - neither one will recover their expenditure to refurbish the boat they own as they need to after ten years ownership. For example, if the charter owner who always has his yacht for sale, sells his yacht immediately after all the refurb is accomplished, the owner will still - most likely - only get the asking price of US$11.3M+. Oddly, that's just the way it is...even for the private owner as well.
There is one caveat though available for the charter owner -- and this gets back to the BRAND recognition -- I stated before. If the owner pulled the yacht off the market and only chartered the boat at it's regular weekly charter price (no increase), the owner could recover the entire cost of the "best possible case" cost (22 weeks chartered) in one season! And THEN put the yacht on the market again...perhaps selling more quickly with all the refurbishment done!
In the long run is it best to repair or replace? The answer is: it depends on what you want to accomplish.
