Lyrics:
The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me
You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road
Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines rolling on
But when you get to the porch, they're gone on the wind
So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win

Bruce by himself at the piano is, imo, the best Springsteen.
Agreed
Did you see him by himself with a 12 string?
As I near my 7th decade of life I've finally decided what my favorite song of all time is ------- yeah this is it. I know i've heard it a thousand times or more but it still makes me smile and sometimes it haunts me. Especially when I hear it with my life mate of 40 + years who loves it as much as me. Once again thank you Bruce for all the joy and comfort you have brought me over the years.
I can't say anything what a great poem
I'm with ya...
Ditto!
Yes, me too - I’m almost 70 and it’s been my favorite for
Fifty years!
Best rock song EVER written. Listen to it just about every day. Never get tired of it.
💯 Masterpiece ❤🎹‼️
The best intro of any song ever written. Wonderful.
And middle...and end...
and probably outro
Jungleland is up there to
This man is a genius. A giant among songwriters.
Some of the deepest lyrics ever composed...
doubt that....
yeah. hes a wannabe douche

When Springsteen plays solo, you realize what a genius writer he is. What a talent.
How in the wide world can Springsteen reach into the very heart of our collective darkness and touch the longing as it floats in our sea's of sadness in each one of us ? He paints a picture of our lives with his poetry note by note until the end of the song. There is still magic in the world.
I continue to be in awe of this human being even after all these years. Like since the 80’s. Wish I’d known about him before then too! I was introduced by the Born in the USA era. Now recently “rediscovered” him. In my 50’s now. Wow. I missed a lot and regret it but I am so grateful I have found so much of him since coming here on YT ❤️🎶🎹💜☮️
Preach brother.
Might be my favorite version of this song.
The man is a poet!
This. This is what i want to be played at my funeral when ever that is going to be.
It is magic.
I've instructed friends to play this at mine too, send me out on that Thunder Road.
I thought of the same thing.
I have tears welling up in my eyes as i sit at my kitchen table listening to this song and sipping on an old fashioned cocktail.
One of the best things about Bruce is that his lyrics always grab your hand and pull you through the screen into the movie that they’re painting, and there is no finer example of that than this song, except maybe The River.
Born To Run album was the canvas. The River was the painting.
If I could only listen to one song for the rest of my life, this would be the one. ❤
It's a perfect song.
Best version ever.
Some of the greatest poetry of all time
I have lived and breathed this mans music, he brings to life the stories of human tragedy and suffering, I was in the NYPD when he wrote 41 shots, I was passed over for promotion because I defended the song. My boss said you like this guy he hates us, I replied no you just don't understand his music, its all about the tragedy of humanity and it can be true the 41 shot incident was a tragedy without condemning anyone.
I am writing a Springsteen book about his impact on fans. May I contact you somehow? Thank you.
@@circuitrecords3386 absolutely
His songs are nostalgic, melancholic but yet there is an optimism. The Wild, the Innocent and Greetings are so underrated (by mainstream) both musically and lyrically.
His piano playing at the end is devastating.
We ain’t that young anymore, true Bruce , but you still as fab as ever ❤️❤️
Thank you Bruce for this one. This song literally changed my life ❤
The only comparable version of this anthem is the one with the goddess of angry denim Melissa Etheridge
Its a wonderful version as well 🤍
I saw Bruceperforminglast night in Helsinki🇫🇮
It was a beautiful moving concert 🙏@@patrickmeehan1536
It's a great rendition of this wonderful song as well 🙏@@patrickmeehan1536
No autotune, no band, no lyrics written by others. His voice, his words, his music. That´s the way it´s mean to be, and this is why Bruce is such a huge music star.
My favourite of all of Bruce’s lyrics. Come back to Australia soon Bruce we miss you!
What a beautiful unplugged version--So much more than I expected...One of my favorites to play...xx
beautiful song, enchanting rendition.
Greatest artist and most beautiful man every born!
Amazing version of an amazing song.
Just Bruce and a piano, the way thunder road was meant to be
One of the best songs ever and one of the best performances ... The piano at the end ...
every version of it give me a thrill
Bruce the older i get the more i love you.Beautiful music from a small town girl who grew up in oklahoma.lived in tx for38yrs.Thanks for taking me back home with your music.Melissa Arispe,🖒🖒🖒❤💘💔💕💖💙
"you can hide beneath the covers and study your pain. Crosses for your lovers, throw roses in the rain. Waste your Summer praying in vane for a saviour to rise from these streets."
I'm not from New Jersey I'm a Fifer from Kirkcaldy Scotland 3000 miles away. The story stays the same.
Sweet and an emotional man, singer, artist... and so on ❤️💃🍀❣️
I’m not a huge Bruce fan, but this is a GREAT version of this song. Brilliant!
Go to see him on a concert. You´re gonna change your mind, and maybe, as he did with me, change your life for better.
@@luke5100 you know. I like about 5-10 songs A LOT. Then most of the others just aren’t what I like as far as the music sounds. I’m not into saxophones over rock and roll for some reason! 😂 I realize how weird that is. But it turns me off quickly. However, I recognize the genius lyrically and he has such a great scruffy, really southern sounding, voice. So, it’s not that I’m a hater. I just prefer him in this setting. This video is just a genius doing genius things. Unbelievably excellent.
Never has a song so accurately and beautifully addressed love in a small town. Bruce, you're always gonna be the boss.
One of the best power ballads of all time. And being from jersey i can relate heavy with this tune. Didn't know Bruce played keys. Nice job.
Show a lil faith there's magic in the night...you ain't a beuty but hey you're all right! (story of my life)
Just him on the keys and singing this song just seems so epic. Astounding.
Magnifico Bruce sei Grande!! Saluti dall'Italia
From Portugal! Thank's Bruce!

This man is a true genius, I love his music so much. Greetings from Germany!
Sometimes I cone listen just to cry at my happiness for understanding melancholy, angst, passion and life. A gift this song us, to be certain. Slowed down enough to allow and demand you absorb humanity in context.

This is a great song , it leaves you in no doubt that these 2 people in this have circled around each other the guys gonna give it one last shot at getting the girl and in every lyric you can sort of get this is his last try. So I hope he got the girl in the end. 🎼♥️🇦🇺💋🇺🇸
I think she at least got in the car, which is a good sign.
I don't know. We never hear her side of the story
He does get the girl- her name is Patti Scalfa
As a little Child my Dad often played Greatest Hits CD in Car just for me. And when he played my favorite Song "My Hometown" i started singing words, i imagine which sounds like his.
Later i listened to "The River" nearly each day , now i was old enough to translate the Text and see what Bruce learns us.
Now as a Dad i love Thunderroad it reminds my of past times and has this indescribable melancholy and weakness in his notes.
On each step in my Life Bruce accompanied me and my Favorite Song changes. There is no other Actor on this planet, who is able to do so.
Absolutely amazing how he can still have so much passion in every song
I'd love to see more of the Boss on piano, don't see it very often.
Agreed. He wrote many of his greatest songs from the piano. I wish he would do more songs solo on the piano.
Pure beautiful Americana... what a treasure of a performance this is.
I saw him on Broadway. Each version is a new creative revelation.
Love all versions of this song! Brilliant!
What a poet. 🙏
O how I love this song.
Magic boss...thanks forever
Brilliant performance ! 🎶🎧🎼👀
This genius of a song is an anthem for so many of us. Thank you Bruce.
Your music saves us all… RR.
Supreme writer, singer and musician. What a beautiful rendition. Love this piano version.
You forgot one.
And a supreme human being. 🙏
Bruce's best song
Hear the Bob Dylan influence here!
Setting the bar for what it is to be a great songwriter…. Outstanding!!!
EU O AMO COM TODA MINHA ALMA. NUNCA EXISTIRA NINGUEM COMO VOCE! VIDA LONGA AO CHEFE ❤❤❤😭
The military has kept me far from home... thank you Bruce for keeping me close to those sunny, drunken, summer days on Ocean Ave.
Love this song. I remember the first time I heard it at Storytellers. Beautiful! 😊
I love Bruce's gifted fingers and all the musical instruments he breathes life into and causes ecstasy throughout my body. Only our dear fan, our wonderful person Bruce Springsteen, can do that and I have nothing more to add, I share and thank you from the bottom of my heart that he is.🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I have come to love this song a lot. It was never one of my favourites when younger. But with age and maturity and watching live versions and Springsteen on Broadway. That has changed. A masterpiece when you actually listen and think .
Touches you right to the soul. Masterclass songwriting. Thank you Bruce.
I love this one because I took that ride and we are all still on it 25 years later!
Pesma i glas koji nanose bol duši. A još kad čujem usnu harmoniku to je tek strašno. Može i srce da strada.
Amazing ❤️❤️the best song ever 👍👍greatest Boss
An icon singing a truly icon song for me and my husband ❤️
Amo essa música,do fundo do meu coração ❤️.
This is my second favorite song on Born to Run
What's your favorite?
1975 graduated high school this song blasting on my 8 track across the front seat a beauty, hair flying singing along with me,I snap that pic in my head every time this song plays, that girl ......I married with her 40 years now ty Bruce, epic song ...Peace
You are the boss!!!
Storytelling 101. It's like. As I listen, a slideshow of photographs - stills of an old American movie - begins to play in my head.
Bob Dylan has nothing on this man.
The Greatest Songwriter that ever Graced this Earth
Lennon?
umm no
@@hondosmith9791 the Boss has sold 30 million records more
@@theTruthLifeNWay And eminem has sold over 200 million...guess he's a better songwriter than both combined...please
Please tell Bruce in person that he’s a better songwriter than Bob. Let me know how hard he laughs.
1975 69 Plymouth Satellite flying down a country road with a beauty in my front seat.I turn and the sun melts through her hair making her aviators sparkles. This song is screaming,I watch her lip the lyrics and my hearts is racing as I just smile at her and nod.
She still uses that seat, and when I look at her while we are driving ,I smile and nod.
There's only a couple of songwriters that am so thankful for. PETE TOWNSHEND MUSICAL GENIUS THE WHO. and then there's BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN MUSICAL GENIUS. These two super Giants of rock and roll music. I can't thank them enough for the greatest rock music ever. I have seen THE WHO 5 TIME'S AND BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN 4 TIMES. Their LYRICS in most of their songs are unbelievable how they are talking to us all. Most people just don't get it. Some never get it. Some get it years later in life. Thank you Bruce Springsteen be safe and stay blessed
Love you Bruce 🙏🏽
I place this on the same bookshelf with The Lovesong of J Alfred Prufrock. The same longing, the same claws shuttling across ocean bottoms, and the mermaids hair blown back. Chasing. And loss.
Tim Law 100%. Top draw poetry

This is the song of my life
This was me and my ex girlfriend’s song. I broke uo with her because I didn’t love myself. I’m finally starting to love myself and I miss her. We’d drive down country roads in old shitty cars, windows down and smiles on our faces. Hope she can forgive.
Love from India.
