- Hello, all! This is Michael Arrom. I've been waiting a long time to perform this song. Finally got around to doing this. Special thanks to "Born in the 60's" from Denver for the extra little nudge to get this done! Thanks for all the support from friends requesting this. Hope you enjoy!
I'm a Jersey boy at heart, making my way in the LA music world. After 20+ years of musical training at the piano, it seems that my piano skills are no longer so important. The current music business seems to have more use for my music production skills at the computer. I keep very busy in LA as a music professor at USC and as a session and touring player. I love what I do, but there is something so very special about the work of Bruce Springsteen. Every time I return home to visit my New Jersey family, I find inspiration to interpret another piece by Springsteen. Doing these songs helps release a bit of the energy that doesn't get used while working on a Logic music session.
There are so many things to love about Bruce's music. One of my favorite is his incredible ability to paint word pictures of places and times. My California journey allowed me the opportunity to meet and play music for T.C. Boyle. Seeing the literary kinship between T.C. and Bruce helped deepen my appreciation of the lyrics and to enjoy the vivid movies in my mind created by their work. I've been wanting to visit Thunder Road for a while.
A note for people asking.. I don't have the sheet music :) I play by ear with decent relative pitch (I don't have perfect pitch).

This is the best Springsteen cover on UA-cam, besides your cover of Jungleland. I know you don’t have the sheets, but I think a version where we can see your hands would help us ”fans” a lot:)
Thank you so much for your kind remarks, Gustaf! I'll work on more angles in the future. For now, I literally just have my father putting his camera on a tripod and doing his best. If you're really curious, you can see more of what I'm doing by looking at the reflection of my hands on the fall board.

I’ve been listening to Bruce Springsteen since I was a young child. My dad is a huge fan and he used to sing this song to me every night before bed. Your arrangement of this timeless classic is absolutely beautiful. The Boss would be proud! 😊

Hey Brian, Thanks! I actually have a great bit of advice that was taught to me by my classical piano teacher. She always wanted me to work towards developing a "singing tone" when playing at the piano. Singing along , even if in just your head, is an essential part of creating the proper dynamics (volume) between the notes.

The fact that this video (and your channel) aren’t FAR bigger on UA-cam is absolutely criminal. The playing here is the best I’ve ever heard outside of the original! The emotion through the whole song is just so evident, it’s like I can hear the whole band and vocals along with the piano.

Kudos, my man!! I was asked to accompany a vocalist friend on this song.. didn't realize what a mountain it was, but I'm having fun getting through it. The one thing I wondered about, was how to do the second half, when it's usually guitar driven. But you absolutely find everything and kill it. If imitation is flattery, then I'll be flattering you for the next week or two.

I never saw such a professionell piano cover by Bruce masterpiece Thunder road. Legendary the Roy Bittan and Bruce version. I#m looking forward to see more piano cover like Racing in the street or incident on 57th street.

This is fantastic. Well done. (On a side note, I just started learning "Thunder Road" on piano last night. But after watching this video, I think I'm going to give up and pick another song. I'm not that good of a piano player, and this song seems really complex beginning-to-end for me.)
Hi Kenny, Thanks for your comment. Please don't be discouraged! I'm a professional musician playing with maximum effort. This piece can be enjoyed at simpler levels. I believe another UA-camr created a tutorial for my version of the song. Just take it slow and take your time. Either way, enjoy your journey :)

@@kennykistler6735 Have you looked at 10th Avenue Freeze Out? It's a fun piece that has a lot of simple repetition. Meeting Across the River is also fun and not too bad.

I think the piano is a strong feature of Bruce's musical appeal, it takes his stuff to a higher level IMHO. @@tominrichmond No worries! Thanks for the great video reference. The challenge with these covers is making the part beyond the intro interesting. The actual Bittan performance beyond the intro is usually just simple background. It takes a bit of thought to come up with something that's respectful yet interesting.

I get the you don't have sheet music and so on, but if you broke this down as a lesson and explained a bit, people would pony up $ to learn it. Any thoughts to a teaching channel?
Hey Dennis, thanks for your comment! So many great ideas and so little time. I spend about 15% of my time teaching. "Doing" and teaching are both important and complement each other. I need to do both and the 15/85 balance is about right for this point in my career. Check out Shawn Cheek's channel for a nice tutorial of my Jungleland arrangement.

@@dennis-1983 Soon! I'm headed to the east coast tomorrow. First a radio promo visit on Z100 in NYC then a quick swing down to Miami to help present a Latin Grammy Scholarship. At the end of all that, I'll be spending a few days with my family in NJ before heading back to LA to teach at USC. The family piano is tuned and my dad's camera batteries are charged :) I'm kinda leaning to Backstreets this time, but I haven't decided yet. Candy's Room is a great song!

Lol, I wish it were a bit more important. A lot of current pop music is created by people who don't play traditional instruments. Music doesn't have to be challenging to be "good", but a lot of current music can be easily played by people with less training. The first sentence of most audition calls today describes the appearance they seek, not your skills :/ Unfortunately for me, the piano job in Bruce's band is already taken by a living legend. I'm otherwise happy doing what I do :)
