Lyrics
The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me
You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road
Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines rolling on
But when you get to the porch, they're gone on the wind
So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win
This is the best rendition of Thunder Road...I might have to say...ever...!!
My black lesbian friends love this version
This song is Springsteen's Masterpiece.
These two complement one another so well. This performance is a treasure. Melissa is such a passionate singer!
Love the way he lets her sing "Climb in, Mary" at the end. I've never seen two performers enjoying themselves so much.
She explains the back story in this video :)
ua-cam.com/video/iXjerU6EORU/v-deo.html
these two are amazing together...both sing with such passion...
Springsteen sings to me only...telling me it's ok to be ordinary and in pain. All will be well in the end.
My friend you wrote the best comment...everything will be ok...you have my wishes too...
@@deunasni2751 My friend a great comment. Carry on. I hope all is better for you 3 years later. If not as you wrote it will all be okay in the end.
To share a stage with the most talented recording artist of the last 50 years must be exhilerating...this is a fabulous version of one Bruce's masterpieces.
I have never been the biggest Bruce fan, but this is one of the greatest music videos In my opinion
Absolutely the best version of Thunder Road, and the best and most beautiful duet ever ...
Anyone can be your Mr ✅️ he just has to want you
Steven, I used to say that Bruce was a national treasure; that he has become our nation's conscious.
But this is an insult to him, and to those around the world who feel about him as I do.
He is simply too great - his themes too univerally poignant, his impact too widespread, his ability to help us all to understand the human condition and be better people because of it, his ability to bring us closer together - for any group or nation to claim him.
Bruce Springsteen is a human treasure.
This is probably the best rendition of Thunder Road...ever...love it!!
This song absolutely rocks. I love that 12 string that Melissa is playing.
Magical! I've watched this a number of times but I never get tired of it.
This song was always well written. The energy and passion of Melissa Etheridge make it unmistakable. This is as good as it gets. Not sure if I will live long enough to have a song grip my passion as this one does. I get goose bumps every time they sing "Tel me what else can we do now except roll down the windows and let the wind blow back your hair" Great use of imagery and less than that...just great harmony
I bet Mary goes with him after hearing that romantic line. :)
Thank you so very much for posting this video. This is my favourite Bruce song, always gives me chills, and the combination Bruce & Melissa is magical. Thank you!
Amazing collaboration, amazing musicians, amazing voices. Warms my heart.
One of my all time favourite songs... reminds me of never ending nights in the 60s in my car with a beautiful blonde girl
Perfect pairing of two incredible voices.
WOW. This is so good it's tear-jerking. And I can sing third harmonies on it! :D Definitely a fitting tribute to my favorite song by The Boss, and as richly, classically folk as he likes to do things these days. This one's a winner. (It's #1 on my All Time Top Ten Rock Lyrics, too.)
Didn't think this song could get better, then it did! :)
Grazie per la traduzione.Canzone stupenda. BRAVI.
Every so many years I have to come back and watch this video. Perfection.
Same❤
2 of the best right there. 2 warriors
The Saviour of Rock n Roll Bruce and Rock renegade Melisa at their best.
1:43, goose bumps every time !
Superb .
The laughter by Bruce at the end was due to the fact that Melissa almost missed her queue to sing, "So Mary climb in". She squeezed it in but it caused Bruce to crack up.
She'd messed up that part earlier, but got it right at that point so he laughed. (Whew, got it!)
It's like two friends talking about their experiences, realizing that they have one in common. They decide to make it a beautiful song. I know Bruce wrote this a long time ago, but they shared the moment in this song. Great performance!
Sit tight, take hold! This is awesome!
one of best songs ever. Bruce and Melissa are my favourite singers and togheter.... WOW! amazing performance!
agreed 100%....what bruce did in the late 70s and early 80s (river tour) simply just wasn't from this world....so many epic versions of songs like badlands, prove it all night, thunder road, racing in the street...
Love the acoustic guitars....love the harmony parts, some of which I always imagined and sang along to the radio ....................
Melissa is perfect for his music!
When Melissa, at the end of the song says: "...so Mary climb in..." you really have no words to explain the emotion she gives...
"...Except roll down the window and let the wind blow baby "
@@benjaminmarie384 this comment is 13 years ago lol
@@yos9270 here 13 years later also haha
…and now we know why. ua-cam.com/video/iXjerU6EORU/v-deo.html
This song reminds me of the time my wife of 60 years and i eloped and headed South from NJ to Route 66 in her ember glow 65 Mustang convertible. The only song i remember hearing on the radio then was the Trogg’s “Wild Thing “ , while
driving thru the Mojave desert . We ended up settling down in Huntington Beach , in a furnished apartment 1 block from the surf for $120 a month. No jobs or worries yet! They really were the “good old days”😍😍😍
Stupendi!!!!!Questa e'musica!!!!
Damn, I'm in Heaven!!
What a great version - Melissa's voice sounds so much like Bonnie Tylers, it's scary...can't believe there's another woman with such a great rough, crispy voice - I just love the sound of it - so powerfull and unique!
its funny, its not the most perfect song ever, but this performance has to be one of those that moves me the most.
"not the most perfect song ever"
Don't be blaspheming in here.
+Mitch Berg I've got too many favorite songs to count, but if pressed, I'd have to say this is the greatest song ever written. The piano and harmonica intro, sounding like opening the front door to the sunrise, a new day with new possibilities, then "The screen door slams" behind you and you're off.
Pete Townsend said it best "When Springsteen sings on his new album, that's not about having fun. That's fuckin Triumph, man!" And this song is the optimistic, desperate, defiant, beginning of the story of Born To Run. It has every thing that makes Rock N Roll great, but most importantly, Freedom and Fuckin Triumph, man
very nice duet, it maybe sounds even better than the original
I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS SONG, PERFORMANCE, MAN, WOMAN...JUST FANTASTIC!! 👏🏼😝❤️💋💋
Next to his solo piano version on the Live 1975-85 box set, this is my favorite version of this song.
maybe intentional - a dramatic pause before the last last two lines of a version which ends, obviously intentionally, with a softer, descending phrase.
This is such an amazing collaboration. Two of my favorite artists, i wish they did this more often.
"So Mary climb in..."
Awesome!
Spectacular harmonizing here. Always a great song, slow or fast versions.
"In the lonely cool before dawn!" Beautiful poetry!
Shit, this is art!
maybe not a mistake. maybe a pause for dramatic effect.
Wow...
this is a remarkable video ... thanks for putting this on UA-cam
Absolutely love this performance by Bruce and Melissa.
They both have raw, powerful voices; together, it's magic!
brividi... come sempre... lunga vita al Boss
Brilliant!!!!!
99 out of 100 times you'd be right, but you missed on this one. This is great, a brilliant, - a truly magnificent version of one of Bruce's classic songs. We are watching the best there has ever been or will ever likely be. and Ms. Ethridge makes it even better, impossible though that may seem.
wow..amazing.nobody is like the boss
I remember i saw this unplugged live. The moment Melissa said that Bruce was comin', I tought "Shit, this is gonna be historic". And so it was
Un bellissimi duetto!! Bruce e Melissa!!! Il massimo!;!👩❤️👨😅😍😘💔💞💕💋💘🎅
There is only one word that can describe this: AWESOME!
I really like Bruce Springsteen and also Melissa.
But together they rock like no one else.
I will never never tire of this xxxxxx
Bruce - a song that says it can be better - how true.
awesome! I didn't even know this exsisted.
Is this actually the best thing ever done on this planet?
incredible. Thanks for posting
Un capolavoro di canzone! Grazie
How can you not love and respect this performance of an incredible song?
How come so many people still 'boo' Springsteen after his fantastic performances? Because he didn't want to fight in a war?
*Everyone* should be like that dammit! Pick up an instrument instead of a politician's rifle.

It really doesn't get any better than that. Way to go Melissa and Bruce.
doesn't matter how many times i listen, still gives me chills, tyvm for posting this
Mid Nineties... I bought the cd single around 1996... Gee, what a song. A friend of mine - a writer - wrote a small essay about it.
Agreed. Melissa makes this better and I loved the original. She gets it and has always been a Bruce fan. She nailed Born to Run at his Kennedy Center tribute, so I'm a new fan. Check her doing Janis Joplin with Joss Stone. Love her, never expecting to. She rocks. Bruce's song was already understood. Classic
@MrBillSPreston I sure can. Changed all that to dvds long ago. Contact me for anything and everything MLE on dvd!! ;-)
@mbl1962 Yep that version I have on a dvd I created with other MLE items. Get in touch if you want a copy!! ;-)
Sheer brilliance. I've sung this along with Bruce at 11 concerts in the UK and America and never tire of it. This just underlines what an excellent song it is, a whole film script in four and a half minutes.
Two of my favorites together!! Cool! :-)
@SlipKnot7480 He started with nothing & over the last 40 years has earned every penny he has. Are you suggesting he isn't free to do whatever he wants w his money? He is very generous with his time & money. He quietly writes large checks to the Food Bank at every venue he plays; he supports Vietnam Vets; he plays more benefit shows than any living muscian. He opposed the multiple rounds of Bush tax cuts for people in his income bracket that have destroyed the economy & created the deficit.
Wanna know how dood the album, "Born to Run," is? This may be the best song, but arguably, it may be fifth or sixth best.
The editors of Time and Newsweek were embarrassed when they put Bruce on the cover the same week - the first time that had ever happened for a non-new story - October 27, 1975, two months after the album came out.
Their problem was *not* putting him on the cover, it was *not* figuring out how great the album, and the singer/songwriter, until the same time as their rivals.
This is not sexist or homophobic read the whole post. I saw Mellisa open for the Eagle (Hell Freezes Over Tour) and had stadium floor seats. My wife and I were the only heterosexuals in a sea of lesbians. They were the greatest concert companions in history. They rocked all night and never sat down, just like me. They didn't Bogart and knew to be quiet an attentive on the ballads. All I've got to say is, if you have a sea of lesbians at a concert put me there. They were the greatest.
I've just seen "Bruce Springsteen Storytellers" DVD, where The Boss accompanying himself on piano, guitars and harmonica, along with the story behind each song.
The last one is Thunder Road, the only one he plays two times: just singing the first time and explaining it the second time.
To a sure point, he effects himself, making me cry.
Ps: I apologize for my English, but I'm from Italy, so sorry.
My love❤️
this is a fantastic performance, which make me stuck in the moment when I riding with my motorcycle while dust and wind blow my face......
a song with a video that makes me smile and laugh and cry all at the same time.
karma
@3322big8hugg What's that supposed to mean? Do you go around mumbling non sequitors in-person, too?
Comparing Bruce Springsteen to aerosmith is truly comparing the sublime to the ridiculous; an entire brilliant, magnificent book to a footnote in a mediocre tome; Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks to an interstate highway median, etc., and so on.
wow dude... does anyone like you. i see you used the same term.."whiney liberal" on another person here. thats pretty original... and again you are stalking someone profile. you should probably just keep your comments to yourself, because not many people like what you have to say, and im assuming that is a reflection of your home life as well.
@FedorEight you're not funny or clever..just very sad. why would you search someone out that you don't like..only to be rude.for alot of women bruce is sex personified exactly because he is not a physical, cosmetic clone AND uses his heart and head to connect with everyone thru his songs.
I LOVE Bruce but must admit that I can't stand the way he sounds anymore. He's become a country singer and has lost his edge. Compare this to the 1976 or 80's version and you'll know what I mean. Where is that gritty Jersey Shore kid? Cuz this one sounds like he's from Alabama...
Well. I think it shows how generous Bruce is to share this song with someone. But i can't help thinking ... he wrote it ... and he sings it like no-one else can. She has an OK voice ... but it is just OK ... her summers will all be wasted in vain
I'm not sure... Did she eat at 4:05 with "so mary climb in". Sounds like she missed the cue and Bruce bowed his head and grinned. Suppose it could have been intentional... if not he should have hit her with his guitar.
This song surface at all my parties, on youtube, spotefy and riped mp3....bruce is brilliant as ever, but melissa brings me the water i`m longing for....the bestt regards for this two artists from norway....
thincdinc are you serious how could you say this is ruined by ethridge this is awesome you need to not listen to springsteen well no you should everyone should listen to him this song rules thats just my opinion though
Freehold New Jersey. Growin' up in that town, he's singin' to his girl, come on.., lets go. lets go , take a chance with me, a life together away from here. All nite date ended up back in the same life or....? Get it now
Numbskulls and ballbags and bulldykes, oh my. Do you guys like Bruce because he's an intolerant bastard, or do you like him because he's a soulful guy who knows about love? 'B', right? Maybe try it yourselves.
Does any one here know how her fight against breast cancer is going?
I saw her on Letterman a while back and she really looked good, I know she is a fighter, there's no doubt in my mind, but still......?
@ Anna00555: I couldn't have said it better myself! Goose bumps all over, this song really made me cry! The very best I've heard for a long time! This version is just amazing!
I am a Bruce fan from E Street Shuffle release...and I love this performance. But frankly...they look like they are competing for "most passionate solo singer". It's contrived. But good.
@benb4770 .+`
Tiny Tim was at Asbury June 25, 1969. Bruce met him late that afternoon prior to 'the' thunder storm behind the boardwalk. The rest is speaks for its-self.
Simple acoustic strumming, no fancy stuff, just the song - lovely!
BUT I do love the E-Street Band version - you can play this song anyway if you're THE BOSS.
The fact the crowd also claps gives the hint that the pot theory is not correct.
