    Awesome video!! Go team Biocube! I’m just about to get my Biocube 32 wet as well, and loved seeing your method!! I also plan to use Biospira and Dr. Tim’s. Would love to hear more about that pump you use to transfer the water into the tank. And what salt did you decide to go with?

      Bana Sophia Thank you so much and GO TEAM BIOCUBE! The pump I used is actually a motorized gravel cleaner but can be used to transfer water as well, I found it on amazon for around $20 or so, I can send a link if you’d like? As for salt, I used IO reef crystals because I had some sitting in a bucket and it’s cheap, especially for a cycle. I appreciate your comment and thank you for watching!!

    Done cycling?
    I set up a 29 this week (26th) with the same 20 pounds of live sand (although pink not black). I mixed salt in the tank as well but I did it without the sand (fear of killing bacteria with hypo salinity) then added the sand - my sand storm just cleared today 😁. As this tank is PC it'll be softies (mostly zoas) unless I retrofit the LEDs I used on my 120 RR. I'm getting ready to add fish (clowns) as they're damsels, hardy, and should be fine as long as I keep up with water changes.

      Eric Bell The tank is fully cycled, but I’m waiting just a bit longer to try and skip the gross algae stage, like I had in my Evo. As for the lights, the stock lights can actually support SPS life! I’ve seen documents showing their par and they can grow anything you put in here. I’ve done a few more changes to this tank and I’m going to be uploading an update video on this one very soon!

      @@SaltFishTV Thanks! My Biocube is older and has 2x 36w power compacts - it might support some easier SPS but I would change to LEDs if I wanted to move to SPS - I believe the 32 has LEDs? As soon as I saw the rock I knew it was from Jester6, haven't made an order yet but there's some stuff I'm definitely thinking about getting. How much did it set you back? On a more depressing note, I've had 2 32gal biocubes.....both cracked in the front right. The first time I managed to save most of the coral, second time not so much. Spent last 8 months growing all my coral in 2 other nano cubes, yesterday the 14 gal biocube's pump burned out....killed everything again. Have a love hate relationship with biocube, they got me into the hobby, but have set me back so many times now that I'll never use 1 again. Hopefully you have better luck, I've got a bunch of gear I got for it that I never ended up using, InTank media basket, Steve's LEDs(upgraded hood),etc. Still figuring out what I'm gonna do with it all

    Great video! I’ll be emulating your method to include Dr. Tim’s fishless cycle. Part of Dr. Tim’s instructions was to account for water displacement of rock and substrate. Approx 20%. For the BC32 this calculates to 25.6 gallons. My question is would you still do the 4 drops per gallon or half the dose of ammonia as mentioned a previous comment because it’s so potent?

    • @SaltFishTV
      @SaltFishTV  3 роки тому +1

      In my experience of using Dr. Tims ammonia, it has been very potent and you don’t want ammonia or nitrite levels to get way too high as it can stall the cycle. Thank you for your comment!! Keep me updated on your success!

      Make sure it is absolutely zero TDS, RODI water before it even touches the tank. Ask them when they replace their filters and make sure they stay on top of it. It’s always better in the long run to get your own unit as you can stay ontop of filter maintenance a lot easier to ensure you have the best water for your reef.

  • @kylek2703
    @kylek2703 4 роки тому +1

    Quick question.. I’m on day 12 of the cycling process where I’ve been fishless cycling with Dr Tim’s ammonium chloride. I added the One and Only, along with a bottle of Bio Spira as well. I dosed the ammonium chloride according to the directions (4drops per gal) and my ammonia’s been able to lower its levels , but my Nitrites have been through the roof and haven’t been able to level off or go down for days now. Was just wondering if you any recommendations?

    • @SaltFishTV
      @SaltFishTV  4 роки тому

      Oh yeah, that ammonia in a bottle is super potent and I normally dose half or less of the recommend amount. If your nitrite gets too high it can possible stall the cycle and will have to start over. I normally dose the ammonia only once and then let the bacteria do its thing for the cycle. Don’t add anymore ammonia and be patient for another week to see if the ammonia or nitrite will go down.

    Background music was really distracting. I wish you showed the part where you added the salt so we could see how hard it was to mix with the skulls in there. Also - hw you measured the amount of water and amount of salt and the salinity. All good things to show to beginners. Other than that good video.

    • @SaltFishTV
      @SaltFishTV  4 роки тому +1

      I am not using a skimmer, you don't have to run a skimmer as long as you keep up with weekly water changes. Skimmers only really help with getting excess nutrients out of the tank if you heavily feed all the time or have a super high bio load (too many fish than the tank/biological filtration can handle). I don't run a skimmer on my evo, but many people do anyway. It's not required and my evo does fine with just water changes. So far this cube is also proving to be effective with just water changes.

    Do you have the link for the pump you used to fill your tank? I'm a newbie to saltwater and about to set up my biocube. How much salt do I use in my 32g to mix with my water? (I'm using distilled). Any advice for a good heater? I looked up the brand you're using and it's expensive right now with everything I need for starting up..trying to find a cheaper alternative. Also, I've been reading online saying that bioballs are nitrate factories and shouldn't be used. What's your input on that? I've always used them in my fresh water tanks..

    • @SaltFishTV
      @SaltFishTV  4 роки тому

      Joy Pothier Ill post the link in the description of this video so you can click it and go right to it on Amazon. As for how much salt it will take, a genera rule of thumb is 1/2 cup salt to 1 gallon of water, but not all salts are equal so you’ll have to keep adding and testing your salinity to bring it up to at least 1.024 but never higher than 1.026. As for the heater, it’s best to buy the best equipment in the long run as it’ll last you a little longer and a heater is really important in a saltwater aquarium, especially if you plan to put coral in. If the heater fails, it’ll cause everything to die and crash the tank. Try to save up for this heater as it’s one of the good ones and not as expensive as most heaters are. So with bio balls, they are nitrate factories because they tend to trap detritus and thus increasing nitrates, also, you don’t want high nitrates in a reef tank either. It’s a bit different than freshwater. The marinepure balls I use are solely designed to help colonize the bacteria a lot more without being a nitrate factory.

    • @SaltFishTV
      @SaltFishTV  4 роки тому

      On second thought I’ll just post the link here for the pump:

      Joy Pothier Yeah if you’re starting from scratch saltwater isn’t that cheap like starting up freshwater. As for rock it’s always good to put 1lb for every gallon. This is for the biological filtration again, or you can do a minimalist look in the display and then in the back add the marinepure balls. Also check out marine depot, bulk reef supply, saltwateraquarium.com . Websites like that to find some goods! You can even find good dry rock on eBay.
