I remember watching all seven games of this World Series. I was still in school so I had to stay up late. What a series it was.

Initially a lot of folks weren't interested in a Marlins-Indians World Series, but MAN those two teams just slugged it out for 7 games...! And then there was the unorthodox set of elements as far as the weather was - from the humid weather in Miami to the cold & snow flurries in Cleveland Lol. The Tribe came as close as they've ever come( aside from 2016 )to winning their 1st World Series championship since 1948 but the Marlins, who had a lot of pressure on them coming in to the 1997 season following their spending spree the previous offseason, got it done in the end. Game 7 really made it a true Fall Classic for sure.

Offseason moves that the Marlins will make with their current roster:
    - Moises Alou will be traded to the Astros in the offseason
    - Kevin Brown will be traded to the Padres in the offseason. The Marlins acquired Derek Lee in the trade, so both teams won.
    - Jeff Conine was traded to the Royals in the offseason
    - Al Leiter was traded to the Mets in the offseason. The Marlins acquired AJ Burnett in that trade, so both teams won.
    - Robb Nen was traded to the Giants in the offseason
AND MANY MORE MARLINS PLAYERS IN THE ROSTER WILL BE TRADED DURING THE 1998 REGULAR SEASON

The World Series shifted back to Florida, where the temperature for Game 6 was 80 degrees, 42 degrees higher than Game 4. Chad Ogea shined on the mound.....and at the plate. In the 2nd, Ogea faced Brown with the bases loaded, and singled home two runs. Ogea also doubled in the 5th and scored himself. He also pitched five innings, allowing only one run before the bullpen finished the job. Cleveland won, 4-1, and now, the ultimate in pressure, the pinnacle of sports; the baseball season will conclude with a Game 7.
Cleveland vs. Miami, at Pro Player Sradium on Sunday October 26. And for a change, it's NOT the Browns vs. the Dolphins. Nope, it's the Tribe and Fish for Game 7 to see who wins the Super Bowl.........er, World Series. Jaret Wright started for the Tribe while Al Leiter went for the Marlins. It was scoreles in the 2nd when Tony Fernandez singled home two runs to put the Indians ahead, 2-0.
Jaret Wright made it stand early on. Through 6 innings, he had a one-hitter. Bobby Bonilla homered in the 7th to cut the margin in half. It was still 2-1, Indians, going into the bottom of the 9th and Jose Mesa on the mound. Three outs stood between the Tribe and their first title since 1948. Moises ALou singled, then after Bonilla struck out, Charles Johnson sent a 1-and-2 pitch for a single, sending Alou to third. And this is where Notre Dame alum Craig Counsell, a mid season pickup from the Rockies, enters the picture. Counsell hit a fly ball deep enough to score ALou and tie the game at 2.
The game moved to extra innings. It was now the bottom of the 11th, still tied. Charles Nagy on the mound for CLeveland. Bobby Bonilla singled. Then with one out, Counsell grounded out to Tony Fernandez, who bobbled the ball, allowing Bonilla to go to third. Following an intentional walk and a force out at the plate, Counsell was on 3rd. Two outs. And Edgar Renteria at the plate. The count was 0-and-1, and then Renteria sizzled a Nagy offering into the grass in center field. Counsell scored, and the Marlins won the game, 3-2, and the World Series.
The crowd of 67,204 was in a frenzy as the Marlins won it all in just their fifth year of existence. Livan Hernandez, 2-0 in the series, was named the Series' MVP. And for Cleveland fans, so close, and yet, more heartbreak. A thrilling finish to a thrilling season.
Again, thanks SW561 for a comprehensive recap of 1997 from opening day to the final pitch of the World Series, 30 1/2 hours worth of highlights.
And while this season has a ton of clips, this will merely be a precursor to the epic 1998 season, and I will REALLY look forward to the highlights for '98 beginning tomorrow. Thanks again.

If you think about it, every game for Cleveland in this postseason, with Yankees, Baltimore, and Florida, all games were tight tight tight. Its a damn shame Cleveland could not hold on against the Marlins.
So the only two bad things about the 97 postseason:
1- That Cleveland didnt win this game 7
2- That Cleveland did not face Baltimore in a game 7 (this would have meant that Cleveland played every possible postseason game possible. I dont think since the division series started this has happened as of this comment in September 2021).
3- That Baltimore could not beat Cleveland in 97 ALCS. That Baltimore team was awesome.

The Marlins will not make the postseason again until the 2003 season when they won it all again.
Luis Castillo was with the Marlins in 1997, but he was not on the postseason roster. Castillo will also be on the Marlins in 2003 and win another title with them
Jeff Conine was with the Marlins in 1997. He started 2003 with Baltimore but then got traded to the Marlins on August 31, and he would go on to help the Marlins win another title.
So Luis Castillo and Jeff Conine have two rings with the Marlins.

A World Series that initially didn't draw a whole lot of interest at the beginning....finished with a flurry as the Indians & Marlins just slugged it out and battled each other back & forth for 7 whole games, and beyond. The Cleveland Indians thought they were on the doorstep of winning their 1st World Series title since 1948....but the upstart Marlins, after garnering much attention for their wave of offseason signings the previous fall, were the ultimate victors in the end. Great to see Jim Leyland finally earn his long-awaited first championship as a manager after all those heartbreaking losses with the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier in the decade. It was the best of times for the Florida Marlins....for about 11 days. Then of course, the team was sold - and the roster was completely gutted before the last of the champagne bottles had been popped. The 1st salvo of which would be Moises Alou being dealt to the Houston Astros. By next season the Marlins were barely even a shadow of their former selves.
Anyways, that puts a bow on the highlights for 1997, Thanks once again! Looking forward to 1998....I wonder what kind of season '98 would look like....anyone...? ;-)

Interestingly enough, Don Ohlmeyer (NBC's West Coast President at the time) openly wanted this series to end as fast as possible, since it was preempting NBC's Must See TV lineup, while also reasoning that Cleveland and Miami weren't top TV markets in the States. (As of 2020, Miami is 16th largest, while Cleveland is 19th.)

I'm surprised Miami isn't larger given how much Florida's population has grown.

Jose Mesa blew the world series

    • @hmhm856

Well, Cleveland also blew both game-3 and game-5 in Cleveland. And both of those games were NOT Mesa's fault.
But yeah, if Mesa doesnt allow that run in game-7 in the bottom of the 9th inning, then yeah...
