I was a kid when the Marlins won the 1997 World Series. Lots of memories. This was their first of the two World Series titles won by the Marlins. The only made it to the playoffs twice. All were wildcard berths and all resulting World Series titles in 1997 and 2003.
Over 75,000... many people forget all the tarps the marlins had in that stadium.. with the tarps they could sit 42,000.. without them.. 75k... 2-3k tickets were sold with "obstructed views" and still sold out in seconds... they did it again in 2003.
Stadium was designed to host baseball and football. By the late 1980s, Miami was already trying to make themselves a target for expansion. Baseball was part of the plan from the beginning. Calling it a “football stadium” was part of the rhetoric used to get taxpayers to build them a new ballpark.
A night of firsts. The first-ever WS title for the Marlins. Miami's first-ever professional baseball championship. The first-ever team from Florida to win the WS. And also the first-ever on-field presentation of the Commissioner's Trophy.
I was born in Plantation FL in 1986 and moved to Las Vegas in October of 1997. Literally moved to Vegas I believe a week or 2 before the World Series. Went to dozens of games at the old Joe Robbie Stadium. Wish I could have lived in Florida a few more weeks to celebrate the 1997 World Series Championship in my home state!!
Fun fact: This was the loudest recorded crowd reaction to any sporting event in US history. It reached decibels that were yet to be seen. Manny Ramirez said of the fans - “I couldn’t believe the noise. I have never seen fans so loud, and I’ve been to Manchester United games. We have never seen anything quite like this. What an amazing sound. Wow, that was great 😂!”
I was at this game. When Bonilla hit that homer to get it started it was literally deafening. My Dad turned to me and said I have a feeling you wont be going to school tomorrow lol
Wish I could have been there but born in 2005 and wanting the marlins to get into a World Series to be with a huge crowd, must have been a blast to see the whole crowd cheer when they won the World Series
Through 6 games this was one of the worst World Series of all time - bad pitching, tons of errors, blowout games, games dragging on for four hours, etc. It was so bad that the head of NBC even said that he wished it was a sweep so they could get back to their regular programming. Not sure this one game redeemed the entire series, but if a game ever could, this one came close.
3:25:27 "The Florida Marlins have won the #WorldSeries!!!" And for Jim Leyland, he never played a game in MLB. But to win his first ever World Championship as manager is oh so sweet.
All these years later rewatching this game, I totally forgot about Tony Fernandez letting that groundball slip past him in the 9th...setting up the game winning hit, which was singularly sweet for Florida.
He was shielded by Bobby Bonilla, so he didn't have a clear line of where the ball was. Bobby was able to get away with it, but it would be players' interence.
I guess we will just all ignore the fact that Counsell never touched the 2nd base at 2:15:03 for the out. They called Williams out anyways, then Thome came up and hit a single, which should've been an RBI, with Williams scoring. making the score 3 to 1, and game would've been over in bottom of the 9th.
As a DBacks fan I feel the Marlins are partly to thank for our eventual 2001 title by showing that an expansion team could quickly become a serious contender. Even after our mediocre inaugural season in 98, we were able to land a bunch of quality veterans who were still chasing their first ring. Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Mark Grace, Steve Finley, Tony Womack, Reggie Sanders, etc. Wonder whether those guys would've taken AZ seriously if Florida hadn't won it all a few years earlier.
As a Dodgers fan, I went to the Chase Field from May 26-29 for 4 game series and I was shocked how weak dbacks fan base is. Despite winning the World Series, making several playoffs, with latest being 2017, fan base is very weak and low in numbers. Dodgers fans outnumbered Dbacks fans by roughly 3:1 to 4:1. It's a team that has more accomplishments than the Mariners, Rockies, Rays, Rangers, Astros, and the Padres but yet, number of fans are low. Dbacks really need more number of fans. But from my trip, as I talked to dback fans, I developed respect for dbacks fans and learned what loyalty was about. Despite team slumping and having bad management in their organization, dback fans still stand by their team. Even when team was losing 14-1, they stayed till end of the game. I hope dbacks get their team straight very soon and make the playoffs so we can have our playoff rival series again.
