Wayne was not dying of cancer in 1976 when this movie came out; he did not get the terminal diagnosis until a few months before his death in 1979. And Landis misses the mark on this one, it's a little slow moving and somber, but is much better than he gives it credit for and the Duke gives a great final performance.

its still crazy tho that he did get cancer and die from it and wasnt far from his last movie he made where in it hes dying from cancer and it just makes the movie that much better. still extremely sad tho we will always love john wayne he is a legend.

All due respect sparky but he had already had a lung removed due to cancer in 1965 . Tho he did not die during or immediately after the movie it was slowly killing him.

John Wayne contracted cancer twice: in 1964, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and had his left lung removed, "Rooster Cogburn" with Katherine Hepburn was filmed shortly after his left lung was removed. In 1979 he contracted stomach cancer, which took his life. And while IMDB says he didn't have cancer during the filming of the "Shootist", his "lung cancer" was in remission, it fails to mention that instead of lung cancer, he had stomach cancer. Wayne smoked 5-6 packs a day. In fact, John Wayne's daughter Aissa writes, a lung cancer diagnosis in 1964 was effectively a death sentence. "He went ahead with surgery to remove most of the diseased lung. The surgeon had to go in through his back, the tumor was so big. Ten weeks later he (Wayne) called a press conference to say he’d “licked the Big C.” “I don’t want to end my life being sick,” he told the assembled crowd. “I want to go out on two feet-in action.”
The Shootist (1976) would be his last film; he was sick again while making it. In March 1978 he had open-heart surgery, a risky procedure. Once again, he got through it. Aissa writes "But the Big C was back. Stomach lining this time. The smell of most food made him want to vomit. In January 1979, surgeons removed Wayne’s stomach and made a new one from his intestines. They found cancer had spread".

Critics be HANGED!!! This film touched me being not only a lifelong Wayne fan, but also as a cancer survivor... I still love the scene where he says goodbye to Mrs Rodgers... It was like he was saying goodbye to all of us. His raw courage displayed in this movie was nothing short of inspiring.

That's a fact, agree 100%. My brother battled brain cancer for more than 2 years. The last time I saw him he was in the hospital for an infection. I didn't know he'd stopped his treatment. I casually talked to him for an hour before I went into work. When I was telling him I had to leave he grabbed my hand and said he wanted to die at home with his boots on like a man. I said, dont be so dramatic you just have a slight infection, you'll be home in a few days. I promised him I'd come by the next day to see him. His room was empty when I came by and I asked the desk nurse if they had moved him,the desk nurse just stared at me. He'd passed away just hours before. I'm glad you beat yours friend. You,me,and my brother are all John Wayne fans and the shootist is a fine swan song. God bless!👍🇺🇸

A real triumph for John Wayne in his last film. Great cameos by James Stewart, Lauren Bacall, John Carradine, Richard Boone and many more. A fond farewell to an American icon in films, Wayne later died in 1979.

I think John is underestimating this movie. It's a very good movie that gets better and better through repeated watchings.
I had to check out Mr. L's output and since the early '90's he has mostly just been about working with Michael Jackson (yikes!) and that wonderful doc, Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project.
Martin Scorcese is far more generous when discussing other movies.
After watching Mr. Landis' take on It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World I am worried that he may be taking alittle too much pleasure in knocking other people's achievements. IMO.

To my mind I think this is a great movie. It's always been in my top 10 of great westerns. There is a lot of joy to be had in this picture, the choice of cast, the performances and the direction are all superb. The chemistry between Wayne and Becall is measured perfectly, the villains are believable, the supporting cast is finely tuned and the ending is superb. I would like to have seen Siegel direct The Duke in a couple more movies although Wayne campaigned for the role of Dirty Harry but was turned down as being too old.

Look, Landis is a comedy director. He's a talkative, smart guy who doesn't have an edit button on his tongue. He says it ain't a great movie but then goes on to list all the MANY reasons this is a GREAT movie. He can't help himself, he has to throw spit balls because it's in his nature but he can't deny the evidence presented before his very eyes. I saw this movie a couple of times when I was a kid when I was lukewarm on westerns on HBO, but now, now I'm going straight to amazon to see how I can purchase it to view again and again. The Duke was the King of American cinema.

Its a great movie because of the message at the end and the fact it Wayne's last movie. I think much of the criticism of Wayne over the years was motivated by his politics-not his ability as an entertainer.

"Almost a good film?" Compared to what? Sure there are better films. Sure, there are better Western films and better John Wayne films ("The Searchers" and "Stagecoach" and "True Grit" top my list). But this role was written for John Wayne as was "Rooster Cogburn" even if neither portrayal by John Wayne exactly matched the original books’ "Books" or "Rooster." No better "swan song" could have been given to John Wayne than to have gone out "guns blazing" and "boots on." If anything, the film is a real homage to the "end of the West" genre as Ronny Howard shoots the bartender (spoiler alert) and tosses the gun away and walks out of the bar in a dazed stupor as to all he had just seen and done.

I could not disagree more with his take on this movie. This is not your average western. This is a poignant and moving story with tons of soul and understated elegance. It's not just a mindless shootem up cowboy flick. The acting in it is damn near perfect! The chemistry between the actors is evident and believable and it holds your attention throughout and if I'm being honest makes you wish it was a little longer (at least I did anyway). If I put myself in Mr Wayne's shoes I don't think I could be happier than having the shootist be my farewell.

Uh, unless you filmed this commentary in 2011, Harry Morgan had been deceased for almost two years at the date this video was posted. Also (as many other people have pointed out in the comments), his role in this film far exceeded Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. As usual, Landis is a pretentious, arrogant numb-nut bastard who likes to hear the sound of his own voice. Thankfully, the internet frequently calls him out for this and, well, that one thing that happened in 1982. You know, the incident where he clearly caused the deaths of three people, but was later exonerated for reasons that are incomprehensible?

    @treywest268 2 роки тому +1

I completely disagree with John Landis' assertions about this movie.
It is about a man who has outlived the times that he was known for.
(As John Wayne had outlived the time of the Western Genre.)
This was John Wayne's final movie and as John Baynard Books, it was the finale to a life well lived.
In this movie we see a man who knows his glory days are behind him. Such as Wayne himself saw. (He did not have a current case of cancer but he had a case in the past that was in remission)
    WARNING! SPOILER ALERT!
At the end of the movie John Wayne gets shot and Gillem (played by Ron Howard) shoots the man that shot Wayne's character. Howard's character then tosses the gun away after killing the man.
Books (Wayne's character) then nods in agreement with Gilllem's choice to rid himself of the violence that took so many lives in Books' time.
It isn't an anti-gun movie though.
It is about settling differences in another way other than taking umbrage with other people's comments.
But still doing the right thing when is necessary.
It is a great movie with a lot of great actors! Well worth the time investment!

wayne often died in his movies in reap the wild wind iwo jima seabees wake of the red witch liberty vallance the cowboys and the alamo clint eastwood never died in his westerns unless you count the beguiled as a western rather than a gothic horror but clint in his movies never killed a native american indian im not sure if he ever did in rawhide though. anyway the shootist is a wonderful movie with the bedt known and most sucessfull movie star in it since chaplain.wayne was an absolute legend in his time almost always in the box office top ten from 1939 til almost the day he died a record which i may be wrong but i think is unique regardless he was both physically and in truth an enourmos star.

Disagree with Landis, of course. This is a very good film. It's off in places -- the photography isn't imaginative, the editing is kind of uneven (especially of Stewart's scenes) -- but to say this isn't a good film is sheep dip.
It may have suffered on release by having so many actors identified with TV. Howard (at the time), Boone, O'Brien, Morgan -- all TV guys. Unusual to have them in with Duke, Bacall, Stewart, and Carradine.

nobody gives this enough credit. the whole thing of JW dying in this one makes it far more interesting than a lot of his films. the scene in the street car is played perfectly by Wayne.and it might be the best scene in the film. (except for when the bartender gets his.) Landis seems to contradict himself here just a bit. but what a boast. he was there watching this being shot.

Every movie can’t be “The Stupids,” John.

Talk about milking a dead horse. In Into The Night, a very bad John Landis movie, he offers the most galling display of fake martyrdom I have ever seen. He plays one of the bad guys, and gets taken out, in over the top fashion. Even though his character is very minor. Could not believe my eyes. Why didn't he just put an apple in his mouth while he was at it? Something he should have done here, instead of shooting his mouth off, about the always great The Shootist.

I'm glad Landis spoke the truth, this movie is a huge disappointment. Poor Don Siegel saddled with a script that is basically worshiping Wayne's persona over and over, but only a bit of suspense/action at the end. Wayne and Ford are massively overrated in the Western genre, give me Stewart and Mann any day.

This the same film director John Landis whose negligence and greed led to the untimely death of Vic Morrow, Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen. As well as injuring six others.
We lost probably the greatest, if most unsung actor of the 20th century and two sweet little kids who never should have been on such a dangerous movie set at all.
He the breaker of child labor laws resulting in THREE DEATHS? And Landis has the audacity to criticize The Shootist film?

Great movie, maybe John Wayne's best. Don't believe this guy. Great ending. It is one of only a couple Wayne did in the new era of western realism movies, and you can see it is a shame the cheesey old school westerns didn't die out earlier.
