HEC RAMSEY & THE SHOOTIST with co-star Rick Lenz A WORD ON WESTERNS
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 вер 2024
- Actor Rick Lenz co-starred as a turn of the century sheriff in a little remembered series of 2-hour NBC Mystery movies called "Hec Ramsey" (1972-74). Richard Boone starred as Hec, an ex-gunfighter and Lenz' deputy. Veteran character actor Harry Morgan was the local barber and Boone's pal. Even with an array of good directors, amusing scripts and talented guest stars, the series ended after two seasons. Lenz worked again with Morgan in John Wayne's last film, "The Shootist" (1976), and remembers getting whacked on the back of his head by Duke during the filming. It was an accident, of course, but Lenz ended up making a visit to the hospital after the incident. Recorded May 15, 2018.

Boone in "Hombre" and "Big Jake"...just masterful.
Loved hearing him talk about Richard Boone, he doesn't get nearly enough credit these days, like Lee Marvin Boone was always authentic.
If the Duke was a mountain, Boone was a volcano. You could never tell when the latter was about to explode. "The Shootist" is one of John Wayne's finest performances and a fitting swan song. I miss them both, along with so many others.
Always felt that Boone was one of the few bad guys that could intimidate Wayne's character.
Lee Marvin, George Kennedy and Forrest Tucker are 3 others.
Paladin, along with The Virginian were the thinking man's western
@@mpetersen6 Paladin was my Dad's favorite. My favorite was Cheyenne. Everybody thought he was a big dumb cowboy, and he always proved them wrong.
@@brianboisguilbert6985 yup
@@brianboisguilbert6985 Absolutely agree. I think Boone did the Shootist just as a tribute to Wayne. As I recall he only had three scenes. It took big actors to be on the screen with John Wayne.
Absolutely loved Richard Boone. Not only was he a great actor, but also had the best slouch stance.
I think his best performance was in RIO CONCHOS.
Yay the slouch! He's either about to laugh or kill ya!
Rick Lenz is a classy, genuine and humble man.
I appreciate a man who wears his natural hair color.
Any relation to Kay Lenz, I wonder?
Yep don't care what color it turns, long as it don't turn lose!!
I am 52, I've been watching old western's Classics like Audie Murphy Westerner's on TV for a long time now and Richard Boone, John Wayne and James Stewart and others been watching are awesome not like today, Today Hollywood sucks. I've always been a big fan of westerns since I was a kid. Like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne, John Wayne has always been my favorite even though he's over probably 60 years older than me. Lol, Old Hollywood was just the best!
I agree. I sure miss these old westerns.
There has not been an actor like Boone in forever. Really miss that kind of artistry.
I remember leaving the movie "The Shootest" with a friend. It was the first time we had saw it. We both felt we had seen the last movie Mr Wayne would make. It was a somber drive home that night. Of course we didn't really know it was true at the time. He was a great actor and a great American.
Had the same experience with my best friend. We left saying it was as if it was a final film. And we wondered if that wasn’t so. There was a real requiem feeling about the film.
Great interview with Rick, Rob. Richard Boone was a great actor, and if you see his very early work he was slick, handsome and Shakespearean. But really came into his own when he went the crusty and gone to seed route. My favorite performance of his is in "Hombre" where he is absolutely menacing. My sister and I loved Hec Ramsey, great show that went under the radar, and it still holds up. There were a few western-type shows in the early 70's that were stellar but tastes had gone toward the cookie-cutter detective shows and sit-coms, which were cheaper to produce. I can only watch The Shootist once a year...I get emotional.
Have you ever seen him in THE WARLORD with Charlton Heston? Check it out, great story , Boone steals almost every scene he's in.
@@brianboisguilbert6985 Yes! He is the consummate 11th Century Norman knight! Brutal, merciless and unforgiving.
Perfect description!!!
so agree.oddly given their similar styles later on wayne and boone complimented each other on big jake! wayne loved the tension of irresistable force meeting immovable object liberty valence the searchers the quiet man even lucky ned in grit are all fearsome foes maybe as good as him! boone is probably the best villain in the wayne movies! like rio conchos or the comancheros they could have even switched roles with no detriment to the story! elmore leonard master of film dialogue in his books and films shows boone at his best in hombre and the tall t. yet the bandits doing the same thing are performed completely different giving the lie to snobs who say westerns are not acting.great post thanks.
RIO CONCHO is one of my favorite Westerns. Boone, Stuart Whitman, Jim Brown and Tony Franciosa all shine. .
Boone is like Wayne in THE SEARCHERS only with more of the bark on him.
Forgot about the TALL T. Love those Budd Boetticher, directed Randolph Scott films, raw, sparse, well written plots and fine acting.
Similar to Anthony Mann's work with Jimmy Stewart. Mann showed the dark side of Stewart's aw shucks persona. Great stuff.
Oh man! Thank you for that! "Hec Ramsey" was ground breaking TV. I loved that show because it took current events and stuck them in the 1900s west. I wish that it had gone on a few more years because it was really well done and a great cast of characters. And - Rick Lenz does sound like a young Jimmy Stewart through that series.
The CSI before Quincy...lol
Thanks for the word, Mr. W. Rick Lenz is a wonderful storyteller.
The Shootist was one of the best westerns I've seen. Sad that it was John Wayne's last movie, but it's nice that his last acting role was so good and memorable. The movie poster was great too! 🤠
I always like Richard Boone . One film to watch is Hombre in which he played a very intimidating role in which he enters a wagon station and starts wanting the one of passengers ticket for that scene he was surely a tough and real . Great actor .
yes, I always thought that may have been the best scene that Boone ever performed
Can’t say enough good about your channel. It’s just so interesting and fun.
IMHO, The Shootist is John Wayne's finest movie, and in the top 20 of my favorite westerns.
Richard Boone one of my favs thx for the site Hec
Richard Boone was a great actor.
One of my fondest Christmas memories was waking up to find a Have Gun Will Travel gun and holster set under the tree, complete with a stack of the famous calling cards. A Richard Boone fan from way back. Thanks for this interview. Lenz's character in "...Ramsey" was the perfect juxtaposition to Boone's, and he played it masterfully.
Rob, I love this longer video format with so much more information. This is such a good look at Richard Boone and of course, Rick Lenz and his career. I always did see Rick as another Jimmy Stewart. I love the injury story from The Shootist and John Wayne’s. “sorry” reply. Thank you so much, Rob especially for the longer format. Never stop, my friend.
Lenz always reminded me Jimmy Stewart
Yeah, he really does.
It's early Sunday morning, family is still asleep, Got my coffee , a plate of biscuits, bacon and a new AWOW.
Life is good.
👍
I'm with you, brother :D
👍🇺🇸
I was just thinking about the old television series Hec Ramsey and wondering if anyone remembered it. Great show! Thanks!
The Shootist is one of my favorite westerns.
Yeah I liked how Wayne picked a film so close to his life of a Outlaw dying as he was himself . Also would had been the gallant way to go and he thought he won till the bartender blown him across the room . Yep. I own the DVD.
Hec ramsey and the shotist so true western 🤠 movies Richard boone and John Wayne awsome actors they deserve a lot of oscars for their work perfectionst they 🤠 where true cowboys 🤠 🤠 🤠 thanks Word for this video i enjoy every moment have a great Day
Thanks, Tom. Wish one of the channels rerunning westerns would pick up HEC RAMSEY!
Loved "Hec Ramsey". I was surprised, when it was canceled. I was a kid and didn't know, that it was because Richard Boone wanted out.
Another legend of a movie! I love the engraved colt the Duke uses in the movie! There is a vid of behind the scenes of the movie and the Duke is talking with two passing by old ladies about trivial's every day things is wonderful to watch the simple great man he was! Thanks for another great interview and the learning .
Great childhood memories are relived for me remembering watching westerns on the old family black and white tv lol... .Sadly both my parents arnt around anymore now ...They were also great Western fans.. Just like the great Western stars they won't be forgotten by me either. .
These westerns and their actors and the directors and producers that made them is a lost art. I wish we could grab that lightning in the bottle again.
Thanks for mentioning my favorite actor Richard Boone who I discovered in the movie "The Tall T" with Randolph Scott back in 1957. I surely do miss him. Thanks. Out.
Top notch Interviewer with yet another top notch guest. It's apparent that these actors and actresses have incredible memories-which makes perfect sense given their job and training. Very impressive all around.
That pic was greatest exit the Duke or any other man could have made but it belongs to him
Well said and very true
Yes indeed such great times as those must have been, when listening to these actors talk about such great times put you right there, so very enjoyable, thanks Rob Word
Thanks for another great video Rob. I loved the Hec Ramsey shows, though short lived and The Shootist, like many John Wayne films, is a classic.
Another great interview Rob, you have such a natural talent at making your guests comfortable so that they relate interesting details; Carson, Cavett, Parr, you are right up their with them in ability.
Absolutely a great interviewer! If course hes dealing with one of my top fave topics...Westerns!

I just finished bing watching Hec Ramsey… I enjoyed this a lot.. thanks Rob!
Another great interview Rob.
On a couple of great shows and one of my favorite movies.
Although it is a sad ending.
wonderful as always bob!
Boone was so smooth. I loved Richard Boone
Hec Ramsey was a great show. Boone was fantastic as the title character.
Thanks! I remember him from Hec Ramsey :) I enjoyed that show when I was a kid!
Great interview.
I hated him so much in the movie - he was that good!
Thanks Rob
What a great interview , thanks Rob!
These are really interesting interviews, I wish they were a little longer, they seem to go by pretty quick, but that's because they they are good
My sister-in-law, now deceased, was John Wayne's nurse in Newport Beach back in the 70's.
Fascinating interview, Rick Lenz provided some great memories from a very special era of Television and Movies. Thank you for the interview.
Another excellent interview.
Thanks
I follow this program and
I be very happy when l see these great actors ٠٠٠
Thank you so much ٠٠
Thanks, MS.
Terrific interview.
Richard Boone, Big Jake was a great part for him.
Forgot about this series, but remember I thought Lenz was cute! I was just 20-ish. Now I am a big fan of Boone.
Classic, thanks Rick
Richard Boone played a really bad guy in the movie Hombre with Paul Newman.
I loved the Hec Ramsey movies on Sunday Mystery Movies - was sad when that ended. Hec Ramsey was not a fictional character. His life was different than on the series, but he was a lawman in real life. Richard Boone was one of my idols, beginning with HGWT. I also remember the Richard Boone show. I am now 76 and fondly recall those days of early TV - not the crap they have on these days!
I wish somebody would run those Hec Ramsey films. While at getTV programming westerns, I tried to acquire them but, so far, it hasn't happened. I keep hoping.
@@AWordonWesterns I've purchased them online quite a while ago. The quality is not great but they are watchable
Gerry Dooley Thanks, Gerry. Doesn’t sound like they’ve been restored, like much of the Universal product. Were they made for distribution by Universal or a black market product?
@@AWordonWesterns black market, probably a transfer from vhs, most seem to be taped from the CBS late night movie .
@@AWordonWesterns - I have 2 things - I think I was wrong about Hec Ramsey being a real life lawman. I was thinking of someone else. And last night, while Googling Hec Ramsey, I found that there are UA-cam videos of the first season ------ I am going to find them again and watch them in succession! Thanks for refreshing my memories of my youthful Western heroes, Rob!
Rick looked like a young Jimmy Stewart in Hec Ramsey.
I just found Hec Ramsey yesterday on UA-cam and being a Richard Boone fan love the movies.
Just wish they were available on dvd or just clear, good copies.
But hey I’ll watch it fuzzy if i have too. 😁😂
Phil Fox Thanks for the tip, Phil.
This is a wonderful interview about Richard Boone and his forgotten series. Please put on the Hec Ramsey movies.
Thanks for showing us a good side of hollywood.
Really enjoying these interviews, subbed
Thanks, ss, there are more to come!
I would just love it if Rob would interview Bruce Campbell about The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.... I think it would be pure gold talking about that show....
I would love that, too, C.C. Good suggestion.
Imagine 30 some episodes! More work for the actors, more time to develop characters, they had great writers and now? 8 episodes then b o r i n g !
Rick Lenz is a great actor.
Thanks, Brian. We're in agreement!
Hec Ramsey episodes are on UA-cam! I just watched the pilot and the first episode earlier today.
And Rick Lenz was a rather stuffy sheriff whose mission in life seemed to be to be a pain to Ramsey's life!
Very insightful , and fresh inputs make for fun watching thanks .
Glad you enjoyed it!
GREAT SHOW...
The entire Hec Ramsay series is now on UA-cam! ☺
Boone , one of the all-time greats actually wanted to get rid of Lenz. Dick had started to drink a lot on the set by this time and he had all the money he needed, called go-to-hell money. Lenz is being very careful here about Boone's drinking.
Dick ?
Hec should have been a one-hour show. It would've been tighter and not so much padding.
What do you mean "little remembered"? It was one of my favorite shows, though short-lived. I never forgave NBC. :)
Jackson, MI is my hometown and I believe it was your father, eye Doctor if I remember right years ago, maybe 50's.
I liked HGWT and enjoyed Hec Ramsey, too. I thought it was clever. I was never so much a fan of Boone, but I liked these shows and the couple, I've only seen a couple, of Medic. That looked like an interesting series, too.
Awesome interview!
Good stuff thanks
Glad you enjoyed it, Gerald. Thanks
Great insight into so many old favorites of mine. I can do without the Bloomberg commercials though.
The commercials are all up to UA-cam. We know nothing about them and my UA-cam setting eliminates them so I wouldn't have a clue what they are. I think our new, longer running times for AWOW is the reason there are additional commercials.
Incredibly, the Hec Ramsey episode about his paramour being murderer came back to me about 30 seconds before Mr. Lenz mentioned it! Ramsey's coming apart was as he was sobering up was triggered, as I remember, by asking when her funeral was to be and was told, "Three days ago." 😱
I remember Rick Lenz.. is his sister the actress Kay? I was a big fan of hers back in the 70s. she was on a lot of shows then..
Kay is not his sister. I would love to have her as a guest!
@@AWordonWesterns Wow that would be great if you could get her one day. More decades ago then i care to admit to.. man what a crush i had on her.
U all forget Boone in big Jake great bad guy part and character
I have been enjoying these for a while yet had no idea who Rob Word is. I looked you up on Wiki & IMDB....wow , I would love to see a word on Word. Incerdible resume for sure
Ha! Thanks, Joe. I think IMDB is plenty of information. Although, director/photographer Steve Carver has a new photo book just out called "WESTERN PORTRAITS The Unsung Heroes and Villains of the Silver Screen" and there is a chapter on me. I'm very honored to be included and very proud of the wonderful guests who have joined us on A WORD ON WESTERNS over the past 6 years and contributed their stories for all of us fans. Thanks for watching. Rob
Richard Boone was one of the great western bad guys and not only was he tough as nails, he also gave the impression that he could out think his adversary as well as out draw him. He was 61 yrs when he died which means he was only around 50 yrs old when he appeared in Big Jake with John Wayne. I remember one reviewer saying at the time Big Jake came out, that Richard Boone was far too old to be playing bad guys in westerns. I thought he was great in that movie and if he hadn't been hit with lung cancer in the late 1970s, he would surely have had many great roles ahead of him. In 1970, it was hoped that Boone, like Lee Van Cleef, might be successful in spaghetti westerns. The first 'foreign western' that came his way was called Madron with Leslie Caron. For financial reasons, probably a tax dodge, the movie was made in Israel, but unfortunately it was a complete failure and was only shown in a few cinemas. With this failure, Richard Boone's shot at becoming a spaghetti western star never materialized. As a matter of interest, a few years later another western made in Israel was much more successful. Billy Two Hats with Gregory Peck was well received by both fans and critics when it was released in 1973.
Rob I can tell you are a fan of Boone, thank you. You should do an interview with author David Rothel who has written a bio of Boone and many other western books.
Thanks, Gerry. Unfortunately my old friend David Rothel is no longer with us. However, I did interview him about 45 years ago and have that conversation on A WORD ON WESTERNS. I'm attaching the link for you. Please go to our list of VIDEOS and watch more goodies as we have done over 400 episodes. Enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/hJLkOq86JYI/v-deo.html
@@AWordonWesterns oh no , I had no idea David had passed away, thank you for the information. I really enjoy what you do
Ha, just finished watching "The Shootist" 2 nights ago!
Nice Duke really wacked him
I heard that Richard Boone said that his Hec Ramsay's pay check was going for alimony so he said heck to that
I remember a story That Richard Boone told he was in Hawaii and he said ya starve to death until ya get some screw U money, then ya get a little power to do things.
Originally Ron Howard's character kills John Wayne.
The Duke wouldn't let that happen.
He told Ron Howard (almost a direct quote), "People will hate you if you kill me."
So they changed the script.
I've read the book and I can't remember for certain, but my memory is that Gilliam Rogers killed J.B. Books in the novel.
when the actors went to wardrobe , were the clothes always washed and fresh for the actors ?
You get wonderful stars to talk so freely I never interview anyone that wasn't nice and I did them mostly by mail I have a idea for a TV show on here you put title of film and star year and show a clip of as a boy what you learned from film Title When A Hero Was A Man Of Honor I made a take of those only sound I rather talk then write so this doesn't do my idea any good
What we need is another Sergio Leone.
A foreign director could easily make a western cheaply and in a foreign location.
He wouldn't be hampered by useless unions, excessive regulation, insurance demands, expensive land rentals and political correctness.
nice to hear rick lenz (for me he will always be the doctor who stole bionic woman from steve austin on the 6 million dollar man)
I am not bringing up what Maureen O’ Hara implied in her autobiography, who knows, maybe Richard and Lawford were just curious. 🙀
