Fantastic! I learned a lot. Especially about where to lift the brush so the bleed or heaviest pigment will be where it should be. Now maybe my pine trees will look better! Thank you for all you do teaching us beginners. You make it look so easy. (But it's not!! LOL!)

Love painting.But haven't done anything with any mediums since high school, MANY years ago. did one paint class with acrylics, some things came back. I invested into a few watercolors including metallic paints. Glad I watched this video. Hello Emma, I found your channel just 2 days ago. I have been avoiding watercolour painting for several years because I found it too hard, but I didn't have anyone to learn from. The beautiful delicate subtleties of watercolours has always impressed me. You are a wonderful teacher, showing us here on your channel every step of the way, you are incredibly kind to share with us all your expertise. I took up art about 20+ years ago as therapy and have enjoyed every minute of it, I immerse myself in the process and it soothes me like a sort of mindfulness meditation. I have experimented with different mediums over the years: oil, pastel, acrylic, and I love graphite, but watercolour was something untouchable. But now, I have broken the ice and am simply delighted to be trying this delicate medium, thanks to you Emma, I am very very grateful.

Just rewatched this again. My bleeds are horrible. Not too bad on hood paper. But am on a fixed income. So using Chandon for practice. That being said, your tips on using the Canson paper made a huge difference in how my bleeds look. And how to move and blend the paint around. Biggest tip. Wet and dry the brush then go back to the paper. Thanks so much for always sharing your talent with us.

The smaller the area the smaller the brush. Best to leave darker pigment as it always dries much paler.

And that kids-is the difference between my cheap watercolor paper and the good stuff. The watercolor too, but when I try dropping a darker color in it barely moves.
I have sloth paper vs her gazelle.
The watercolor literally stares at me and says “what? I’m not Winsor and Newton.”

I can’t get that colour bleed effect, not sure if is the paper… or the paint… I am using Daler Rowney hot pressed watercolour paper… I don’t like this paper because mostly or dries too quickly the paint or I have a massive pool of water, I try to dry my brush and pull the water out… but then it doesn’t bleed the colour in…. Any advise?

interesting. when painting the tree, the first, I guess you wanted to tell us, it is easy. zigzagy down. and the branches automaticaly went looking down. which is not natural (only lower parts on very old trees look down. I mean that sort of tree). but then you continued make the branches look more grow upwards. you know, these sort of details and notes, beginners miss. because you don't say it explicitely. but that zigzaggy thing stucks in the brain. a beginner (like I still am, but esp. when I just had started a few month ago), don't get it and wonder, why the trees look like from a childs book. :-) meanwhile I learned a bit more about easy trees. but from an professional seniour artits, who does a lot of landscapes. and now with corona, he also started putting out a bit more videos. he mentioned, that a lot of videos for beginners show wrong things, because they simplify. but you interstingly, started simplified and then corrected that and continued differently. not mentioning it, because it is I guess natural for you. I guess, you didn't notice, because this video is about a different topic. It' natural I guess.

Hi Emma, you are a great teacher. I have a question that maybe you can help with. I live in North Carolina and I think the conditions here make my paper dry very fast when I'm doing wet on wet technique. I wet the paper to glistening (any more and it would pool). However, as I am working on the background images on one side of the paper, the other side is often too dry to give me the same bleeds as on the right. I use 100% cotton paper, 300g/m2 140 lb paper. I know I'm a bit slow as a beginner, but not that slow. I don't know if I should let it all dry and then re-wet the area before continuing or if I just keep trying to keep it wet as I'm working. Do you address this in any of your videos you can direct me to or do you have any advice for how to solve this problem?
What type of clip are you using to hold your sketch book open? How thick is it? Does it "dent" or otherwise mar the paper? Do you have a link for purchasing them? Thank you!
I'm Not sure what brand they are. Got a pack of them off amazon a long time ago. This was the biggest size in the pack. They don't leave a dent, But I also don't leave it on my sketchbook longer than I use it for a painting.

I have tried the pansy fifty times and have not been able to replicate what you have done. I am now using 140 lb paper and Windsor newton paints. I have tried having the petals wetter and drier and have tried putting the extra color on with a wetter brush and drier brush and I have tried putting on less paint and more paint but I can't get the colors to bleed as yours have. None of mine look like pansies. So frustrating, do you have any suggestions. There must be something about how wet the petals are when you add the extra color but I can't imagine trying more degrees of wetness. Thank you for the video and for any comments you may have for me.
