That’s a good point. Unfortunately, as a freshman I’m required to live on campus. It’s just the way it is at Carnegie Mellon. Still, I was very happy grateful for the size of the room and I had no complaints.

Im a senior rn in HS and watching this just got me so hyped for college next year. I'll be rooming with my 3 best friends and we all get our own bedroom and bathroom which is lit. I can just see all the memories we'll have, im going to deck out my room so much lol
Max sharing a place with your friends sounds nice but remember to establish rules like cleaning,food,and what time everyone gets home like you don’t want to live in a shithole or your friends to eat your food or you be asleep and they get there at 4am so just talk about everything

Your right it is a bit packed. But when you live in such a small space you have to condense things a bit. I did try my best to keep things organized even if it was a bit tight.
If you want it to look more spacious you should make ot whit with a hint of a bright color like yellow or neon yellow any bright color aswell as add mor natural light that's it😊

I've always been into high-tech stuff. I especially want to learn how to get my lights turned off without actually using the switch (lazy status, what can I say lol). Seriously, I'm moving into a new apartment soon for college and would love to have some stuff like this! Is there a video where you go into deep detail about each individual tech piece? I’m in the process of marking some more detailed videos but if you just want to turn lights on and off with your voice or a phone, all you need is a Phillips hue starter kit and an Amazon Alexa.

What did you use as a security camera? I would love one for my dorm.
It was just a cheap $10 webcam from amazon. Plugged it into my laptop and downloaded a free piece of software called AtHome Video Streamer to monitor the feed from my phone.

Tommy Yanovich We are not allowed to damage the wall (such as puncturing the wall with a nail) but we are allowed to tape stuff to the wall. So everything I hung up was attached using command hooks and strips that removed cleanly at the end of the year.

Gotta say dude, First impressions this is a sweet dorm. Like as a person I would consider myself a geek and this just makes my heart ache to just buy all of it and recreate this. And you defiantly have a carrier in setting up smart homes. That being said, I do have some constructive criticism. You made a comment in the beginning saying that this took months to put together. If by months you mean to plan and buy the stuff required and it took like a week of actually building it in the room, then great job and good luck in college and moving all this stuff. But, if my months you mean it took months into the semester to put it together because of the sear amount of tech and all you need to re-prioritize how you spend your time. A dorm set up ,even a tech one, should take a day to a few days to put together and the summer to buy all the stuff. This is because, you have to take that stuff down in a few months and store it and everything. If the college you are going at is one where you can stay in the same dorm for your first x years then this is great. But if it's not then this isn't worth it because just undoing the cabling alone for this is going to be horrible. Don't get me wrong, I think your awesome for even completing this. If you are still in your first year, you might consider in the future getting off-campus housing for a project like this. it would 1, give you more space to put all this, and 2, you could have it part of the lease that you stay year around and you would not have to take all this stuff down and 3, you would not have to worry about people stealing all this stuff.
Now I get that you have a camera but, it is to easy for someone to just use a mask hoodie gloves and idk pantyhose or something walk into your room quickly and kill the camera. then stuff all the stuff into a cooler or bag or something and boom all your stuff is gone and all you have is footage of someone with no skin color or face grabbing your camera.
or if you didn't put all this smart stuff one your own network branching off from the schools wifi then someone could hack this and turn the camera off or make it where it doesn't record.
I mean you might have cameras in the hall but good luck proving it was them who stole stuff if they get like 3 buddies to go in 15 mins each and then they are the ones who steal stuff and they all walked out with a bag or cooler or something.
Ok, I'm done with my essay on this video. I hope you think on some of what I said and not skip it and consider it hate. It's not I just want you to one be careful with all of this expensive equipment and 2 find a way to take this wonderful skill and use it to make money for you. seriously their are some people who would pay good money for you to setup their home like this.
All in all, cool project, this was my first video of yours and I intend to subscribe to see where this goes.
Thank you for the feedback! I really appreciate detailed comments like these. To answer your concerns, 1.) the “months” of setup mainly involved the pre-planning and figuring out what I’d need to be able to setup all the smart things. It took less than a week to plug everything in and wire it all up and when it was time to move out, I did it all in less than 24 hours. Also regarding the theft, yes you are right that a camera can’t prevent a theft. That’s more so for a peace-of-mind thing to see if any friends break or tamper with stuff. I usually don’t worry about theft as the rooms automatically lock and require an ID card and pin to enter, which only me and my roommate have. It would be quite difficult for someone to just walk in and steal stuff since the room is only open when me or my roommate are inside and the entire dorm itself is only accessible to students who are registered tenants. And regarding the hacking, I’m no expert at that but all the WiFi connected devices are password protected so gaining access is definitely a challenge, but probably not impossible.

My son's moving to Mudge in the fall and I'm looking for ideas to inspire him. Lots of great ones here. Are the cable runners stuck on the wall (since you can't drill)? Also, if your room doesn't come with a raised bed is it easy to get Housing to raise it for you?
Nothing was drilled into the wall. And yes, it was very easy to request a loft. You just ask when moving in
Were the loft beds already there/provided by the school or did you build/buy it yourself? I'm looking to get one to put over my computer desk at my house to free up space but it's so hard to find one that doesn't have a desk or a couch built into it. The house we are in has 10 foot ceilings too and there's no ceiling fan to decapitate me so I'm really considering it
