You are doing great pal, don't worry. The muddy bit will give you good experience when you hit the country roads later on. Gravel on the corners and tractor mud on the roads....its all good experience. love how honest your videos are.

Just a heads up Andy, if you find someone to close behind you, just lightly tap the rear brake pedal, not enough to engage the brake pads but enough to activate the brake light switch underneath the pedal itself, your rear brake light will alert them to at least back off, after all, they don't want to run into the back of you in case they damage their car.

I love watching these videos man keep it up! One of the safest places to be on the road ESPECIALLY during any bad weather is on the left or right side of the lane. The middle part of the lane is extremely dangerous because it leaves you in a blind area because there is a massive car in front of you so you can't really see too well in front of you, as well as the car in front of you would have a little more difficult time seeing you depending on the car. On top of that, the oil that comes off cars over time spill into the middle of the lane, making that area of the road become super slick quicker than the sides during bad weather. For a learner, it would be best to hang near the edge of the road so if you need to escape you can veer off the side instead of on coming traffic. You're doing great tho man, stay safe brother.

@@bikerofatlantis To be honest, it was a lot harder than I thought it would be! Like yourself, the slow manoeuvres absolutely killed me! Thankfully, my training school are really good and they realised (as a slightly larger man), that I was struggling on a 125cc due to lack of power. I then got put on a 350cc BMW for the rest of my CBT which was a blast! Even gave me a go on the 800cc for the last couple of hours in the car park!

Andy, just remember when you do your Mod 1. The emergency stop is done at speed, I think it’s about 50kmph and in 2nd gear. You might want to practice that. The bike you take your Mod 1 on might not have ABS so the only tip I can give is, don’t use your rear brake. Good luck. I’ve just found you so have been catching up. Lovely couple. 👍🏍️

Well done not dropping your bike! At least your instincts saved you after you hit the mud. One reason I avoided getting a 125 is they usually only ever have cbs so both brakes always work together but with older/bigger bikes they are independent. So you can drag the rear brake without it touching the front brake. Also one thing that you can see from the mud trail is the front wheel always tracks a larger arc than the rear. It's good to remember when doing slow speed drills so you don't clip the cones.

Wait till you try and get it off its a nightmare as even a hot jet wash won't touch it.

Be very careful with jet washing , always use a low pressure washer like those from Muck Off as the more powerful car units can remove the coatings used on the bikes. Another way is to use the battery powered low pressure washers which you can use with a bucket of water also very handy for those odd places on the motorhome like around roof vents where you do not want high pressure to damage the sealant.

    You’re learning quickly.
I learned to ride in the 70s (now I’m in my 70s) and rode through the winter on a Honda 250. Came off on ice a couple of times. In the summer, after passing my test, I bought a CB 400F. Lovely bike. Came off it going up towards Hoyland Common when a woman in a black Capri stopped dead to let a Tracky bus pull out. I used a little bit too much back brake, they were drums back then, no ABS, and it locked. Spat me off. Luckily I had engine bars, so not much damage. She got out of her car and asked me if I was OK. I won’t write here what my reply was.
Now driving four wheels, but I still drive defensively.

They call people like me Wessies over here. They are usually referring to folk from Leeds and Bradford etc., but in my case it’s technically correct because when I was born, Darton was in the West Riding. It was before the founding of the Republic of South Yorkshire. I’ve still got friends and family over there, and I visit fairly regularly.

    Try a hi viz..
A couple of years ago I was stopped at a red light..pedestrian crossing, 30 zone.. Lady with buggy crossing. When she screamed in my direction.. She could see a car coming from behind me who skidded by me on the inside, he ended up stopped after mounting the footpath, far side of the crossing holding his head in his hands. He hadn't see me, her, buggy with child in it, or red light. Lucky for me I had stopped on center line, for no particular clever reason.
After 30 years without a hi viz... I wear one now.

Do you have a pinlock insert installed on your helmet? it is a must for bad weather riding, just be aware there are 3 levels of pinlock 30,70,120 the higher the number the better the protection against misting up. another thing is get some rainex on the outside, make sure you get the stuff for plastic think it has a green label on a yellow bottle and not glass and it will help the rain bead up and keep your visor clear. something else that helps when doing 40mph+ is turn your head to the side but keep looking where your going and the rain will run off the visor then turn your head to the other side and it will run the water off the other side of the visor, you need enough wind speed to do it though it doesnt work as much at slow speeds.

Passed my test last year, end of March at the age of 57. I love it, bought a Susuki Vstrom 650, I commute and have been on a few tours. I live near the NC500 in the Highlands which is awesome on a bike, also just back from a 6 day tour of Ireland. Keep going and follow your dreams, ride on and ride safe. 😊

4:55 It's target fixation. Scary stuff.
I'm a new rider myself, just picked up my first bike about 2 months ago now, and had a moment like that this past week.
Was riding through a local nature reserve (and speeding a bit) enjoying the scenery and turns when I came on the tightest turn there. I'd done 55mph around it but thought it'd be fun to try a little faster so didn't slow down from 65.
Everything was fine at first but it's a reducing radius curve and my eyes caught the edge of the road which felt like it was coming up super fast. If I'd kept looking around the turn and committed I know I could've made it just fine but I fixated on that outside edge. I went wide into the opposing lane and had to emergency brake to not run off the road and into a tree. It was very lucky that another vehicle wasn't coming the other way at the time.
Keep learning and don't be dumb like me!

tips for riding in general and particularly the wet
Avoid white lines, and keep looking for the best stretches of tarmac , well used
    And avoiding debris etc.
Road positioning try and keep behind the drivers right side so you can been seen in their rear view mirror and wing mirror and also can avoid collision if thet brake suddenly
try and keep yourself up to the permissable speeds to try and avoid the following traffic getting too close and always use a touch of brake to let them know your slowing down.
Keep up the good work and stay safe.

Great video guys, I don’t know how I stumbled across your videos. But I enjoy watching people learn and pick up new skills.
I have ridden and raced bikes since 11 yrs old and still ride MX to this day and also my road bikes. Once biking gets in your blood, it’s in for life. There really is nothing that compares wait until you can go out with your wife as pillion for a ride together and have a lovely lunch out and just fun days out together on the bike. As a couple it really is great, any way I digress. Great videos and I love both your commentary.
good stuff and I think your videos are excellent, and will encourage new riders to give it a go.
As for cars following close behind and right up your chuff. without sound sexist (coz I ain’t) avoid going out during school run times in built up areas. In my many years experience, mums on the schools runs are the ones to avoid like the plague & are horrendous for tailgating and also driving whilst being distracted and not focusing on what’s around and in front of them. If they are running late to pick the kids up they are like kamikaze pilots.

Since last watching your videos about a week ago and commented I passed my mod 1. Make sure you use pointed cones. There's some on eBay for like 9 quid. For about 12. When you're doing salom, have higher revs pull your clutch on, ease off your clutch if you bike is tipping. When you do your mod 1. Relax. This was the biggest issue with my first mod 1, it was nerves.

AC-F50. Best thing you can use to protect against the winter time. Spray it on all of your bike. It's developed to protect aircraft during winter. Spray it on, wipe it down. Yes cover brakes. Buy it in liquid form with the spray bottle. Easier bottlee. Lasts ages. Will work all winter. Chinese bikes are worse when near seaside towns.

@@kevindarkstar yeah I've used both. Before and After the Bennetts video. But found AC-F50 just easier to apply. But both work really well. I also use them after cleaning my chain, before I put on any sort of lube or wax. Wax is better for winter.

Good that you experienced that with a good recovery, diesel will do the same thing. A heavier bike might take you down if you're caught out like that. If you end up on an adventure bike, consider the crash bars, not only will they protect your bike, they can provide more space between you and the bike on top of you. Sounds like I'm saying a crash is inevitable but I'm not, just best to think about safety! There's a great channel called Moto Control that gives great beginner advice on how bikes operate principally.
You've also just reminded me I need to do my ACF-50 treatment!

I have to say, your picking up the skills very well. You never stop learning, you just see things earlier and try to react accordingly. As for people who tailgate, I'll even just pull in and let them by. Car drivers don't see half the problem a bikers sees. And are just always in a rush. After a while you'll notice, your camera is not the only 360° vision you have. As you will be looking everywhere to see possible occasions where you need to react. A plus note to night time riding, Oxford now do a waterproof overjacket. That is a silver colour that reflects light like your stripes on your jacket, but it's the whole jacket that reflects.
