Yeah scripts can be a «killer» in terms of delivery :/ What I’ve found is that writing a script to organize my mind and structure the general flow of things can be gold for getting all the little details in there, and in a proper structure, but then not *read* from the script when recording, just use it as a «crutch» to make sure I don’t miss anything important which sometimes happen when freestyling completely :) A happy «middle of the road» approach :)
I also find it helpful to first write a script to get the general feel of things, and *then* trim it down/do some bullet points or «show notes» to use while recording, and only refer back the full script if I feel like something doesn’t «sit» right or I have trouble formulating something in a short and precise manner :)

Great points (No pun intended). When I tried doing scripts it just sounded so robotic and didnt flow right. Now that I do bullet points I have to make less edits and it feels like a conversation instead of me just talking at you. Just like looking into the camera, or the distance to the camera are important, so is the flow. Damnit man two days in a row you got me commenting now I have to Sub to you! LOL

  • @AndreSjoberg

Going through a script phase, writing things out, playing with formulating things in different ways might actually be helpful for thinking of new ways to express oneself and not get stuck in certain ways of speaking and overusing the same phrases over and over- and *then* bullet point the script or do show notes and speak more freely when recording, just to have something to use during recording to stay on track and get all the points in :)
I found that I was using the word «things» *waaaay* too much in my videos, in the heat of the moment while recording my brain just kept going back to things or «this thing» or «that thing» - starting to do an initial script helped me getting rid of that habit and get a more varied and specific language referring to the actual thing by name rather than «thing» :)

I think most of the comments are focused on scripts. From what I understand, that's not what he's talking about. You can totally still write out a script for all your videos and read them word for word. What he's talking about is a framework within which the script fits. No?
Anyway, Steven, thanks for this! I'm in the middle of writing a script (in point form) for a video on the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival in Japan and decided to use your framework. Many of the elements were already there (as a teacher I made do much of this naturally now) but they were disjunct and most importantly the DESIRE part was weak. Also, the word DESIRE made me consider the VIEWER's desire. They want to go to the fireworks because [background info] but it's difficult [challenge] and I'm going to give them the [solution]. I've now created the hero's journey for them!! Priceless! Thank you!

I can relate to your "un-script" method. It feels like it would be easier (and more authentic) to connect with my audience if I'm taking them on the journey of my story (rather than talking at them through a script). Thus, the whole personal branding idea. Feels like one could build trust and community this way, which inspires the audience to return again to my channel. And thanks for adding in the overlay, great visual -- I printed out a screenshot of it and posted it on my board, along with your 'Framework' flow. Great stuff, thanks so much Steven!

I keep it fairly simple at least in terms of structure - Hook, Intro, Body, Outro. I'll word for word script the Hook and maybe the Intro and Outro, and dot point the body.

I think when people hate on scripts, it's a lack of training. Actors use scripts in movies all the time. But I get it, people just want to be more natural (which also feels more relatable).

Honestly I really don’t see how this eliminates scripts. What you are describing here is rightly a framework for how to tell a good story about almost anything. It’s a structure.
By hitting all those beats in the structure you have a solid story.
That’s when a good script, and knowledge of how to write a script can take that story to the next level. The details (of which you forgot a specific and important one like you pointed out).
People who are good at storytelling can wing it from a framework like yours. People who are just learning to do youtube videos might benefit more from going on to write a script based on the key points they have identified in the framework, crafting a superior video from it.
Your assumption that writing a script means it has to be recited word for word in a video is wrong, a script is only a tool for organizing and planning info that goes into a video - it’s a tool to enable people to work their idea into something tangible. If they then choose to read it back to the camera, or make bullet points for use while recording (so they don’t forget a key part about, I don’t know, a framework they are presenting ;)
My point is that your premise that a framework like this is a good tool for storytelling is valid, but your claim that you only need the framework is wrong, frameworks and scrips or script templates are just tools for us to fill with content and help us structure our stories or the information we want to convey.
And in that sense your video is great example that a framework is great for structuring the main story of a video, and a script, in whatever form, is a great tool for not forgetting key parts of info that goes into the bigger story and framework when filming that video ;)

Thanks for your insight, you clearly missed that this video is to show some light for those that are intimidated by SCRIPTS!
Therefor they don’t make a video.
It clearly states in the first 60 seconds that the term script suggests they need it word for word and that doesn’t work for so many!
Also thanks for pointing out my mistake 😉
I was one step ahead of you there and I’m happy to embrace my flaws.
It might be worth you going back and rewatching it 😉

@@Steven-Thompson Flaws are awesome, it’s how we learn :) I do disagree though that the better approach is to ditch a script and instead focus on a high concept framework if scripts feel scary, since it only moves a problem to somewhere else in the process of making a video.
Instead, focusing on what a script actually is, it’s purpose and what it can do for a creator rather than dismiss it would be a better approach.
My reasoning is as follows: «A hero’s journey»/the framework you describe is a good tool to find the purpose of a video, identify parts of the video, and a tool for driving the story forward. It’s a great way to get a birds eye view of the purpose of a video and how to identify important parts of what makes a great video.
It is also a great tool for identifying the elements one would create a script around. For someone who is new to youtube, going straight from a framework like that into ad libbing on the fly in front of a camera, having not spent perhaps enough time fleshing out the details of what is to be said about the subject, is a *big* leap.
Which is where it would be good to bring in what a script really is, or can be - be it a huge piece of text writing out every sentence or word, or a more keyword/bullet point type of list to ensure every key point is included when talking to the camera.
Explaining that for some the next logical step after «filling out the framework» is to write a script in the form of key talking points or for some a full script they read from or rehearse beforehand, for others the framework is enough to start talking.
Including some form of script in the process you describe, as an option, could be helpful for those who have misunderstood what a script is and how it can be used, maybe removing the fear - dismissing the need for it altogether is counterproductive, and rather having a section to try and demystify «the script» would probably be more helpful for many, explaining it’s usefulness :)
My point is: even for those scared by «scripts», their usefulness if used correctly, together with your framework, equals even better videos - and demystifying scripts and clarifying their purpose, and explaining the different ways a script can be done, and used while making videos, is probably more helpful even to those not making videos because scripts are scary :)
