The Mega SG not compatible with the Light Gun isn't Analogues fault. The fault is at the LCD screen, not the console. You can plug in a regular SNES or Sega Genesis on modern TV's and you will suffer the same failure. If you use the Light Gun on anything other then the CRT. The Light gun will be unable to read the sudden brightness change in time from the screen and fail. That is why Sensor Bars were made by the newer consoles. it was to fix that problem. In short, 1 MS of input lag is enough to make the light gun unable to capture the sudden flash on a modern LCD Screen. That's why Hyperkin's hyper blaster HD. I mods the Duck hunt game to literally Delay the flash from the trigger, so the sensor on the light gun can capture on the LCD screen. Unfortunately, it will only work with Duck hunt, and even then, it has bugs.
@@fubrokonway8529 Uhh, why? It still will not work for the modern day LCD screens. You should just wiki Light Guns for the Sega Genesis, so you will understand how they work, and why they cannot function with out CRT's.

steve Johnson I can see a N64 version of this running into the issue that it would need alot of custom hardware. FPGA boards sadly do not have 3d rendering hardware built in.
Update: They aren’t doing a N64 or sega Saturn one but they are doing one called Duo and it will be for turbografx 16 games. And it will have 2 slots one for the card based ones and another for the disc based ones. And it will come out this year.
New sub and wanted to say, I am loving your videos. Also, seeing the Sega CD run flawlessly on this cloned system is nothing short of astonishing. Thanks for the review and now I have to start looking at the Super NT as well.
I would absolutely kill for a Neo Geo and library to go with it. Loved those games as a kid...so many quarters. I am a huge fan of cartridge and console systems, not too happy that almost everything is digital or disc these days
Audio quality side by side tests should have been done with a Model 1 Genesis unit. The Model 2 Genesis has a scaled down Yamaha FM chip and doesn't sound as good as the first model. I'd say the Sg sounds very nice, but it has room for improvement so it can sound exactly like the Model 1 Genesis.
It sounds good, but not the same as the original. I heard that Kevin is doing a complete audio overhaul on it. So hopefully he can get it a perfect match since this is the goal of the Analogue systems.
3:40 How about using the 8BitDo Genesis DIY Kit, turning a 6-button sega genesis controller into a bluetooth controller? Then, you technically have an authentic Genesis controller ready for use on the Mega SG and the 8BitDo naysayers are gone!
Do have a question about the adapter: Some Master System games included FM sound (The hardware was only released in Japan but many North American carts included the FM Sound). Does the Adapter or Mega SG itself include the ability to play the FM versions of the audio or is it not currently possible?
alias Zider20g John Carnege But with RGB you’ll need to find a converter/upscaler if you live in North America, and most of them are junk or way too expensive. HDMI is just a easier to use for most people.
The real problem with that is the price point. For visuals and sound this clear that actually make use of your original hardware, its ether 200 bucks for this or something like 500-600 bucks for an upscaler/converter/mod combo if you want a pair that wont cause much lag sadly.
Actually the Model 1 has its own issues. There's no such thing as a perfect Genesis. The Model 1 suffered from jailbars in visuals, and required a mod if you wanted clean stereo output (the headphone jack is very noisy). Neither sounds or looks anywhere near as good as the Mega SG regardless.
@@joseguillen3340 Depending on how bad the jailbars are, and how heavily you're gonna mod, a Model 2 can actually be better than a Model 1. Finding the perfect, pristine, correct revision (some Model 1's are actually similar internally to Model 2) and such can be a royal pain in the ass, and costly.

So it can go "Oh, then the player hits their target!"
Great review! By the way!!!! Why are people bitching about seeing multiple reviews for this product in their UA-cam feed? These people have too much time on their hands 🙄😶
Now this is the only modern way to play genesis games. I have the original genesis from when I was a kid and I might actually buy this system soon. I also have that controller and its very cool.
If no one said anything... The reason the sound sounds weird is because the best audio gen is a specific model 1. some model 1 and Model 2 use cheaper hardware so they sound crapier.
Wow. I'm sticking with my Megadrive Mini since I don't have any original cartridges (I was old enough to know about the Megadrive at the time, but I had an Amiga instead), but those comparisons are amazing.
I have Sonic's UGS on the Xbox 360, it's pretty good. The audio, the quality, and you can save your game and change the aspect ratio, you can even turn smoothing on
Did you notice any different or lag between the two controllers? I just got the Analogue Mega SG and not sure which controller to purchase. I've heard the blutooth might have more lag on an original Genesis, but it's more of the dongle and connection issues I am not as found of. I know I love 8bitdo's controllers, so just trying to get the best bang for my buck!
That's one of the things I love about the Mega SG actually, that they didn't touch on. It has a full suite of audio settings. Including a completely configurable lowpass filter (set to any range you want, on any audio channels you want), a high-res mode, the ability to emulate the "music slowdown" that many are accustomed to on Model 2s, etc.
A very cool feature would be to activate the dithering filter to to rid off those dithering & grainy artifacts from many genesis & sega cd games, sothat those games will look better then ever before.
So, given this thing has an FPGA, is it possible that this thing may eventually support playing 32X games without the other console attached? Or, perhaps they might make an adapter? Similarly, do you think they might make a Sega CD clone peripheral that would match the styling of this thing?
It's a shame it's not compatable with the 32X because of the S-Video output adapter and the 32 bit adapter. maybe one day they'll make another model to allow 32X games.
2.4G is such a godsend for retro gaming as it has zero lag compared to Bluetooth controllers. Thank god we are finally getting 2.4G controllers from 8BitDo now, as Bluetooth has some pretty significant lag associated with it that is not consistent, while 2.4g RF has no perceivable lag at all. Am kind of surprised that you didn't mention that the 2nd controller was Bluetooth tho, again a lack of general knowledge on this channel.
It's cool that you can play Sega CD games on there, but I'd be lying if I said it isn't a little disappointing that it's incompatible with the 32x, being a collector of those games.
So what does everyone think, is this something you'd want to add to your collection?

Update: They aren’t doing a N64 or sega Saturn one but they are doing one called Duo and it will be for turbografx 16 games.
And it will have 2 slots one for the card based ones and another for the disc based ones. And it will come out this year.
Got to give props to analog love my super nt!! Hope the come out with an fpga n64 one day
I finally got my hands on one when they went back in stock. Wish I could get the Super NT to go beside it 😢
Not sure now but the Super NT was back in stock a couple of weeks ago (received mine without issue).
"becuase it has an sd port" while technically wrong, im an NOT getting internet points from rerez, your too good for this.
*you're
I hope one day Analogue make a console that can play N64 games
Kevtris said in the My Life In Gaming Super NT review that there won't be a FPGA N64 for a few years because the chips are too expensive for that
Of course the SG is going to look better when you use composite out on the Mega Drive.
Tru RF adapter better
I'd say the Sg sounds very nice, but it has room for improvement so it can sound exactly like the Model 1 Genesis.
yeah, I want to hear it compared to model 1..regardless, the MSG still sounds great to me.
It sounds good, but not the same as the original. I heard that Kevin is doing a complete audio overhaul on it. So hopefully he can get it a perfect match since this is the goal of the Analogue systems.
I like it
But can this play Rom Hacks off the SD card?
if you get an everdrive
Yes, its been jailbroken.
Yes
I would pose a question to analogue what if they could create their own add-ons and support hdmi pass thru and powering options off the base
Yeah of course the image is blurry if use a composite cable. But with RGB it's better than any of HDMI cable can offer
alias Zider20g John Carnege But with RGB you’ll need to find a converter/upscaler if you live in North America, and most of them are junk or way too expensive. HDMI is just a easier to use for most people.
I don't see how RGB can be any better than HDMI, if anything they're the same but at different resolutions (and RGB is going to have noise)
The real problem with that is the price point. For visuals and sound this clear that actually make use of your original hardware, its ether 200 bucks for this or something like 500-600 bucks for an upscaler/converter/mod combo if you want a pair that wont cause much lag sadly.
7:39 thats because you are using a sega genesis model 2 and that is not a fair comparison ,the model 2 is terrible in audio and graphics department.
@@MattMerkle buut it can produce muuuuch better audio and graphics than the model 2
@@MattMerkle seee my point is simple you are not gonna compare something with its worst revisions
Wow, I shall be grabbing one of these.
$189.99 is actually a pretty fair price. Damn, I might save up for this in the future. Jolly good show as always, Sir Rerez!
Not really when you can get the atgames version that supports hd comes with dozens of games for alot cheaper.
@@supremevictory4310 but at games has terrible emulation and 200 games dossent mean mutch if the quality is terible the mega sg is worth the price because its a higer quality product.
@@Obscure_man31 i respectfully dissagree.& "Terrible" is an exaggeration.what do you expect for $50.compared to $200 with no games lol ok bruh
@@supremevictory4310 i excpected a qaulity products also its not 200 dollars its a 190 dollars plus with one unrealsed game and many video options and compatible with sega master system, game gear,32x, and sg 100 games. At games emulation is pretty bad and the 200 games are mediocre puzzle or game gear games.
@@supremevictory4310 lol kid stop talking out your ass, the Mega Sg is hardware emulation whereas that ATGames shitbox is a software-based emulator, they're not even the same thing, the Mega is leagues ahead in terms of accuracy and output quality.
I just had a thought on how to run lightgun games on modern screens: Turn on the pixels, one at a time, individually, like on a CRT, or better yet have an internal script that functions like a timer to tell the game "Hey, this pointer is at pixel XY on the screen!" So it can go "Oh, then the player hits their target!"
The reason to get the blue tooth version of the controller adapter is that you’ll be able to use any of the 8bitdo controllers with it.
Mine arrives tomorrow. I agree the raw image is the best.
Was the a coordinated review on this thing? Metal Jesus, you, Gamesack and another channel legit released videos on this thing at the same exact time.
There was a review embargo until a specific date. Analogue did the same thing with the Super Nt reviews last year.
Love the 8bitdo controllers. I have a SN30 pro.
Essentially an updated SNES controller
If no one said anything... The reason the sound sounds weird is because the best audio gen is a specific model 1. some model 1 and Model 2 use cheaper hardware so they sound crapier.
I believe its the launch model 1 that has the best audio and not the later model 1's
Such original naming for the D.A.C... which is probably one of the main components in the hdmi to composit converter
Wow. I'm sticking with my Megadrive Mini since I don't have any original cartridges (I was old enough to know about the Megadrive at the time, but I had an Amiga instead), but those comparisons are amazing.
whats the game at 15:32? the soundtrack sounds banging
Will multi carts work? Sorry if you mentioned, didn’t catch it
I have Sonic's UGS on the Xbox 360, it's pretty good.
Did you play Gunstar Heroes?
7:40
I like a bit of lowpass filtering in retro sounds, otherwise stuff sounds way too harsh...
Beautiful. Time to scrounge up the cash for this and that flashcart for any games that won't work anymore.
At 15:30 what is the game that song is from?
2.4G is such a godsend for retro gaming as it has zero lag compared to Bluetooth controllers. Thank god we are finally getting 2.4G controllers from 8BitDo now, as Bluetooth has some pretty significant lag associated with it that is not consistent, while 2.4g RF has no perceivable lag at all. Am kind of surprised that you didn't mention that the 2nd controller was Bluetooth tho, again a lack of general knowledge on this channel.
Are classic consoles public domain hardware now?
It's cool that you can play Sega CD games on there, but I'd be lying if I said it isn't a little disappointing that it's incompatible with the 32x, being a collector of those games.
