While cleaning the valves, one was badly burned and had pitting on the face. so I am going to have to replace them.

Good. I hate seeing a rebuild with one new part and a bunch of halfway used up parts.
Here in Commiefornia we have to keep all the smog stuff on the cars 75 to 80 MGBs.

Best to have the head resurfaced professionally. Better skim it to increase CR.
Exhaust ports had casting imperfections could've ground smooth to improve gas flow.
