I reckon the ones found doping should be, I don't think there is a reason to ban the entire country. When talking to my coach, Graham Hill (who was actually Chad Le Clos' coach), about the doping situation of Sun Yang, he told me that people have created this stereotype, that being that all fast Chinese swimmers are doping, which unfortunately, was proven correct again in this case. I genuinely thought that Qin, Zhang, and the others were clean, but regardless of whether it was contamination or intentional, they were found with the drugs in their system, and I think that they shouldn't be allowed to compete in Paris. It is unfortunate for the other Chinese swimmers who aren't doping (hopefully Pan Zhanle 🤞), because it puts them at an even worse situation than before. It is understandable that people want all of China banned, but I just don't think it would be fair on all of the athletes from the nation who are genuinely clean (if any at all), but who knows? Nevertheless, this is a very interesting topic to have found out and discussed about just a few months before the Olympics :).

The same argument could be made for Russian swimmers, the clean ones can't race under their flag. They also don't necessarily have anything to do with the war in Ukraine yet they cop the punishment so I feel like you can't take one stance with one and not others.

You think a swimmer at a Chinese training camp or whatever actually has full control of what goes in their bodies?

I currently live in Hangzhou which was where the Asian Games was held, nobody here has talk about this topic or even mentioned, except for my coach who was a teammate with Sun Yang and also attended the olympics , she sent our team this article about this and the tittle was "The Australian media once again slandered Chinese swimming, threatening that 23 athletes were found to have banned drugs, and maliciously hinted at Zhang Yufei". (translated). The Chinese media say that it is fake and on Chinese Tik Tok or other social media platforms everybody is talking how the Australian media did this on purpose to pressure Chinese Athletes. As a Chinese, I think if this was true, the whole team should be banned, because it is not a personal behavior, definitely a collective act run by the coaches and leaders. All the Chinese have to admit this has had a huge negative impact on China's national image. But we need to ask two questions: Why always you(China) dope? Why you(the West) disclose this at this time just right before the big game? It's worth thinking about, and thinking at two sides.

    • @thitran3080

Just think about this for a bit. Would you think elite swimmers like Zhang Yufei, Qin Haiyang, Wang Shun etc., would willingly take drugs and jeopardize their fame and career? I highly doubt it. They worked so hard all their life like other elite swimmers. I suspect there was either an insider (perhaps an official, or coaches) or outsiders (enemies of China) intentionally sabotage the swimmers by putting TMZ substances in their foods. A source told me that there were other hotels of swimmers; but only that particular hotel had TMZ. To me this is very fishy.
Also, banning them in Paris for the substances they ingested by mistake 3.5 years ago sound a bit ridiculous. Assuming if they are tested negative multiple times, I think they should compete in Paris.
I just feel unfair that 90% + ppl want all Chinese to be banned in the Olympic because of this unfortunate situation. I mean look at history, China is ranked 8th in medal stripping and USA ranks 5th, Russia ranks 1st. In the last 40 years of Olympic, more USA olympic athletes got banned than China. No one really mentions that at all. To me it's extremely biased.
Lastly it's not us who make the banning decisions. Based on the currently news, 3 major sport governing bodies, WADA, World Aquatic, and IOC are all on China's side. USADA can accuse all they want.

When the Chinese or other Asian teams win a race it gives me hope that Asians have a chance in physical sports, and we can stop the stereotype that Asian are only metal not physical. As an enthusiast in a country whose no swimmer will even qualify for the finals, I see this scandal quite fishy. It was dug out at just the time to become a huge issue towards the Olympics. It's easy nowadays to take and spread opinions. I think that a scandal of this magnitude will be taken by the relevant official organizations as seriously as they can. The conclusion may not be in time, but that's how the world operates. IMO, however, overgeneralization is the key abstract that causes war. And that's unnecessary.

Fault here is the organization hiding it. And surprisingly it gets published right before the olimpics to create the debate, more views and money.
But my point is... They should have been banned at that time. Now, they should been carefully tested again by other organization and then banned if positive.
Imagine an athlete that has been preparing all these years for the olimpics and suddenly cannot compete, bye career. Not saying they didnt do wrong but cannot know for sure if they have regularly been doing that or not. Proper investigation and decision.
And now this late, even if they are positive again (should be banned) but it is just so bad for the competition itself.

In my opinion, from an objective standpoint contamination isn't at all out of the question, in fact I think it's the most likely answer. Most of the controversy just comes from how CHINADA and WADA have handled the situation. And I do have an extreme amount of concern for the lack of transparency on the matter. Not because I think all the athletes involved definitely did cheat, but because there's a possibility they may have, and the world deserves to know about it, and not just have WADA shove it under the rug. Even if WADA had come to the same conclusion that it was contamination, but had been transparent about it and let the world know *as it was happening,* I would have much less concern. The biggest issue for me is that China is so obsessed with optics and "face" that they actively take measures to limit transparency about what goes on with them, even when they aren't strictly doing anything wrong, and that WADA are caving to the Chinese' requests.

You're missing most of the plot here. Indeed, it was no coincidence. This was China's entire Olympic swim team turning up positive all at once with trace amounts of the identical drug all after attending one gathering. That's not a clean sport violation. If anything, it's a national security emergency. So it figures that the Chinese anti-doping agency immediately informed WADA and shared their results, and WADA sensed there were unprecedented elements that were above their clearance and decided not to go public for fear of exposing an international incident verging on biological warfare. Would any of this make sense in the context of a colossal Chinese screw-up exposing their state doping regimen?
