- Oregon track freshman Cole Hocker edged out Yared Nuguse in the final stretch to take this exciting 1500m race at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, which is being held in Eugene, Oregon. Hocker ran the 1500m race in 3:35.35, his personal best.

Runs a 52 second last lap after almost falling over. Madness
Cole Hocker Runs a 3:35 then a 13:18 in the same day, less than 2 hrs apart, Is this true? He is a Freshman and only 19....
@@billcore6295 yeah he’s pretty insane
@@billcore6295 he's technically a sophomore but has freshman eligibility. he graduated high school in 2019
He has such a lethal kick but looks like he is straining - usually kickers have relaxed smooth form.
@@billcore6295 just turned 20 a few days ago, but absolutely insane
If Cole is on your tail with 400 to go you're doomed. What a great freshman year.
Unless your Jakob Ingebrigtson then you can’t convince me Cole is out kicking him. Or maybe Josh Kerr. Kerr’s kick at the olympics got him 3rd and almost 2nd.
@@ianbusche1471comment aged well
I think that being 20 years old as a freshman probably gave him an advantage
They tried to box him in and that just pissed him off.
HOCK SMASH
I was very impressed with Hocker’s race. This was his first REAL championship style race and he ran it like an experienced veteran. That was centro like execution. Just cool, calm and collected.
centro is washed up how DARE you compare the two.
@@kaluker1 Sleep on Centro all you want but he always shows up when it matters
@@kaluker1 Well seeing that Centro legit throw that almost exact same time down in May, he definitely isn't.
@@kaluker1 he is also an Olympic champion 😑
@@garrettricardo well that doesn’t say too much considering his race was VERY tactical, I would say just his times this season prove he’s not washed or he’s at least really good, I encourage you to rewatch the race
4:22. Look at what Hocker does here. With the race on the line, he has to correctly read the situation and choose the correct tactic. He can hold the inside line but if he does that, he might get boxed if the second place runner can hold. Or he can swing wide but that will cost him a 1-2 meters. He correctly assesses that Nuguse is going to move away at the front and make the space that he needs. Very good tactics from a young runner!
Agreed
Yea he was so sneaky there. And you can see Nuguse slowed down a bit thinking he had it made, and then looked up and absolutely shit himself
1:20 last 600, 1:48 last 800, and a 52 last lap. BEST. KICKER. THIS. YEAR.
Cole Hocker is a beast!
Was that a 52 second last lap?
Cole Hocker has some insane potential going into the trials, same with another handful of athletes in that field
this aged very well
Rooting for both Cole Hocker and Hobbs Kessler to make the Olympics! Both phenomenal young athletes.
Both Hocker and Kessler are brilliant YOUNG runners. But you are talking about High School/College level sport. The "Open" grade is a step up.
Both still need experience. By the time of the next Olympics (3 or 4 years away) they should be "just right". They still need to cut off another 5 seconds from their PB 1500m times to be competitive Internationally. I believe they can both do that.
However, both have good finishing speed so are capable of causing an upset in a "slow run" 1500m. Hopefully they don't end up doing an "Alan Webb" who never achieved anything internationally but was a star in US domestic competitions.
52 second closing lap LMAO thats the same as my 400m PR back in high school
@NOTREALLY HANKAARON Actually, lots of people care - the closing speed we witnessed here is unlike any other. And deserves special mention :)
@NOTREALLY HANKAARON The point was he was probably considered really fast by everyone in his high school, which shows Cole is unreal for a middle distance runner.
@NOTREALLY HANKAARON Oh look another insufferable douchebag.
@NOTREALLY HANKAARON manners-son....
@NOTREALLY HANKAARON I do….
Cole closed the last 100 in like 12 thats insane
the kick alone could make him the jakob killer in the future (sometimes)
@@chinter cole hocker is insanely fast but he is no jakob
@@EpicGamer427 This is true. But Centro is no Kiprop and he still won. In a tactical race it's going to come down to positioning and kick, and if the Olympics becomes that, guess who has the fastest 100m...?
@@chinter kiprop was a dumbass for not going all out that race. jakob in my opinion knows what he has to do (try and out kick cheriyot
@@EpicGamer427 there's a 90% chance of that happening and that makes it a duel between him and cheruiyot. But the Olympics tend to be run much more conservatively than a diamond league meet as there are no rabbits. It's really anyone's race and a dark horse, maybe even a Josh Kerr might sneak in and surprise everyone
Cole Hocker with the kick!!!
Can't wait for more from him.
Cole a freshman? Dude is a beast on the track. His will to win is off the charts.
He's a freshman in eligibility only. He's really a sophomore as he graduated in 2019 and due to COVID still has his year of eligibility as a freshman intact. (Tho he's not a redshirt as he never truly redshirted.)
His sprinting form is Hilarious but can't fault it cuz he's fast!
NCAA athletes are really something else this year
Great win for Hocker. Terrific closing kick. Congrats to him. That was awesome.
this kid is a freshman... damn. can’t wait to see what he will do
think he may be a redshirt
He's a sophomore the commentators don't know shit
@@systemicchaos3921 think technically he’d be a freshman for the outdoor season since covid canceled his real freshman season but I could be wrong
I'm thinking about next year. Nuguse and Cole Hocker. Kipsang & Romo (3:38 each this race) are freshman and sophomores respectively. Then throw in Hobbs Kessler. Pretty damn exciting. Unless of course Jakob Ingebrigsten decides to go to college in the U.S. (3:28 last year as a teenager)
@@Pudnite but having freshman eligibility is not the same as being a freshman. A year of development is quite big at that age
This dude is the future, it was so awesome watching them train this past summer on Ben Crawford's channel.
High schooler Hobbs Kessler’s 1500m time from 2 weeks ago still stands! Faster than any NCAA runner in history. Amazing.
Hocker is amazing.
The Best Cole Hocker
Good Luck 2021...
Cole Hocker, simply breathtaking. Very smart race & great heart. "The heart of a champion" on display.
Hocker running like a fantastic machine....
Mental fortitude by Oregon.
Smart race to stay inside but the boxing in could have cost him. He went beast mode and got it done. Hocker seems like a likeable person, confident but not cocky.
He ran this 2 hours after running 13:18 in the 5k. Let that sink in.
key point brother thanks for mentioning that that makes it a huge run
Are you serious?
Well I gotta say that was a great run by Hocker. When he stumbled, you would have expected him to go backwards but it didn't phase him. Real deal.
That was incredible
I'm an aussie that loves Cole Hocker. He doesn't have that beautiful fluent style but his leg speed and strength are so impressive.
Gotta love Nuguse. Gets upset by Hocker and still smiling the second he crosses the finish. They're both the future of American middle distance!
Dude got cut off on the final lap, loses position and momentum, has to regroup and go from inside to outside to regain position, and then easily out kicks the defending champ, who set a moderate opening pace. That’s impressive.
This man is rilly good....
He has a grate future ahead of him..
I like how they give away the result by putting the winner in the thumbnail of all their vids
It's almost as if sabotaging interest in the race is their goal.
Hocker's quick turnover, sprint speed and running style reminds me of the great Gerry Lindgren.
1:48 last 800🤯
Where’d you get that
@@peterd1623 he split 1:48.8 for his last 800, you can time it yourself... fucking wild

2 future olympians in this one!
Hocker got that Prefontaine grit
Hes a beast but he's no pre. Prefontaine did not run from behind. He didn't ran tactical races and didn't save for a kick. Dont compare a talented college runner to pre. All these 1500 runners do these days is jog for 3 laps then kick.
@@joefixitplays2286 Hocker is already better than Prefontaine. Better PRs, better kick, better as a role model.
@@joefixitplays2286 pre was a great runner but can sometimes be idolized when he shouldn't be. Hocker is already faster in the 1500m and 5k.

Hocker runs a pro race!
Unreal how much faster athletes are today. Prefontaine’s best outdoor 1500 was 3:38, three seconds slower than this Freshman. Geez.

Hocker wins!!! Nutsack!
A FRESHMAN!!!!!
Indy stand up!!!
I think Neguse could've been there if he hadn't surged in that back stretch against Suleiman, but hey he paid for that mistake. Good job Hocker
Still waiting on Cole to drop the killer core workout
"...at the Pac 10... err.. Pac 12 championships." -- Lol
Remember when they used to slip up and call it the "Pac-8" back in the 80's...
Ah, the old Pac 8 Prefontaine 70's... =)
Hocker ran 1:49 last 800. He might have the best kick out of all distance athletes in the world
i have really enjoyed watching these races from uk, and love Cole Hockers style of running, but there are some seriously speedy europeans and africans so will be interesting if the olympic 1500 is fast from the gun will he be able to run some 7/8 seconds faster,
Ingebrigtsen ran a 3:31 this year. He's gonna be tough to beat.
He had home field advantage
yeah... definitely only won because of that :P
He also had the stronger runner advantage
Dis you say that only to see what replies you'd get?? Smh
I wish track and field got more attention.
Hocker did a very bad tactical race but he win, that says how superior he his.
OK.... I just watched this race again because of all the comments saying that Hocker impeded the second place guy..... I am from a runner's family and have followed running for decades, all I can say is ANY complaints against Hocker are TOTALLY unwarranted. He won fair and square. Maybe next time he will lose fair and square. It happens.
Must be that core workout that helped Hocker. Still waiting on it to drop
And just like that naguse went from running 3:53 to 3:43…….he all natty
The fact that Hobbs Kessler ran faster than this is insane
His race was set up completely different. If he was in this same race I don’t think he could hang with how quick they closed.
@@jakobsayers9166 who knows Kessler closed well in his race although not as fast he hung with the best
@@jakobsayers9166 yeah fr I would still give it to Hocker
This is a damn championship, Kessler ran a fricking time trial. A championship is about winning, and in this case it was tactical, and the first half was quite slow, causing the second half to be blistering. Yes Kessler can kick, but he kept an honest pace throughout the whole race. And to be honest, Hobbs can't kick a 52 closing 400.
cole Hocker totally enroached in Jared Nuguse's running room the last 50m, I would like to see this race finish head on, but notice where Hocker's feet are landing - right in the middle of the first lane. he does that so Nuguse can't pass him, dirty move.
Swap the first letters in Cole Hocker's names. 😏
Troll face
what the hell
Lmao
*gets tripped up with less than a lap left*
"And I took that personally."

Your move centro.
Wow!
Nuguse should sit on Cole whenever they race again lol
The new Hayward field would make Pre proud!!!!!
Pre is dead af
@@richardthegingerbo909 you’ll be some day too.
The better sprinter almost always wins these races.
Yeah when the pace doesnt make the standard. Centrowitz in Rio won a gold because of a slow pace and then he had good position to out kick
The 8 dislikes are from guys Hocker kicked down in this race
What the heck did they do to Hayward Field?
He should have taken up cycling as a sprinter with a crazy kick going at 4:00 minute 1609 mile pace.
commentator said "He came in and abolished the Alabama school record"?
Why no fog dog?
he didnt make it through the semi's. he really fell apart with about 250 to go
Cole Hocker look like he done with everyone’s bullshi before the race even started 🤣🤣🤣
There really should be more control of "crowding". I would say that Hocker impeded Nugese in the final straight by getting far too close to him. There is no justification for running that way.
Had the same thought. He drifted left further into lane one in the last 20 meters.
He was ahead of nuguse and pulling away. Like any racing sport, boxing someone in is a strategy as long as it’s not dangerous.
Stop it with these excuses man
Its even worse in the international races. Plenty of 'bump-and-run' and 'elbows flying' in those races, and as long as no one falls down then no one gets penalized. So just consider it good training for Hocker for any European races he'll compete in in the future.
@@EVW.G It's interesting, that Cole's "dodgy" tactics have been mentioned quite a few times on the "Let's Run" forums. BTW, USE YOUR EYES and YOUR BRAINS!!!!
Hooker has legit 47 speed in 400
No way Cole hocker grew up just down the road from me
Nice job Cole
First jit
Where are all the nico young fan boys crying about how nico is just a freshman. FOH
Well I mean tbh Nico Young is a year younger than him and is a far superior Long-distance runner than Hocker. Like Nico Young has already broken 30 while Hocker has barely broken 32 in XC, with only 7 seconds between both for the 5k. (Tho this is me comparing them as both of their true freshman times, not of the extra year of eligibility type deal since Hocker does have an advantage.)
@@TreeforLife ha knew you fan boys would have more excuses. So next year nico will run Hockers time. I’ll keep waiting, I’m sure next year you guys will say ...well Nico blah blah. Better LD runner or not doesn’t matter I’m comparing both the events they do on the track.
@@banksj54 I mean I’m not a fan boy of him at all. You can think I am, and try to act like I believe Hocker is this terrible runner and soo over overrated. The mans put up Olympic trials times as a “sophomore.” (by his 2nd year in college) I like Nico Young, same for Cole Hocker. I also like Connor Mantz, Eduardo Herrera, Wesley Kiptoo… etc. While I do have my own biases ofc, I also know that You also need to remember these guys are long distance runner/ Cross country runners. These guys do more than just the 1500 and 5k. They also do 10k’s, mile, even the 800 (which I believe Hocker could be insanely good at if he were to do it) and next year, Nico might just run his times. Or maybe not. I believe he could, but I also believe Nico Young has been a far superior XC guy than Hocker (as proven by his ring) and Hocker is really a middle distance guy due to the kick he can do (and how his best two races aren’t a long distance event, and also because he’s never ran an event higher than a 5k) while Nico Young lays the law down in the 10k. Hocker is really a better comparison to Centro tbh, and not even to Nico Young. They’re just compared due to being at the top of the game for as young as they are.
A high school kid recently beat Hockers PR
They need to stop watching the screen in the stadium. It seemed to cost Nuguse.
Now we know where Shawn Michaels' long lost son went to.
He kicks just like his dad too
Wole Wocker

Freshman??
These young guys keep feeding matt centrowitz, making the pace slow is bad strategy against experience. Was expecting for Engels to realize this and lead the pace early, instead he took the easy option and got boxed in, you're not gonna be Centro running a slow pace, we saw it in Rio and we saw it again. Someone should have run even laps and shaved a few seconds off and went like 3:31 or so, then people wouldn't sand bags the first two laps

2:03 i mean announcing must be hard but, really...did he "abolish" slavery too in alabama?
Amazing kick by Hocker but wish he didn’t cut off Nuguse at the end there.
@Baum Squad he definitely did. He cut right in front of him so that he couldn’t get by.
@Baum Squad I wasn’t going to say anything but I also noticed Hocker went from almost touching the outer line of the lane off the corner to running practically in the middle of lane 1, squeezing (Nuguse?). To avoid any suspicion it’s best to just run your line at that point after the curve rather than veer into other opponent. If you replay it, you see it. But technically I think it was legal, his opponent simply didn’t have the gas left to push ahead regardless. What a race!
Weird way of saying passing Nuguse at the end.
@Baum Squad I look forward to those finals for sure!
hocker is ok i guess
This is what happens when you run too fast, your lips disappear.
Would have been beaten by a high schooler
Prefontaine would have called chicken squat.
He would be 10 seconds faster without the girl bun
That's why you don't lead the entire race smh
first lol
Well, did Hocker break any rules in the final straight? Let's look at it this way. Cole finished ahead of Nugese...directly ahead of him. Now, to achieve that, Hocker must have come around Nugese, in the finishing straight and why would he do that? That would not be in a direct line - i.e. the quickest route - to the finishing line. So, why? To impede, that's why!. Keep an eye on this guy, because he clearly doesn't play fair.
Yeah agreed. He starts the 100 on the outside of lane 1, then ends in the centre. Hocker probably still would’ve won, but it’s not a good look.
I agree with Baum Squad. He didn't break any rules at all, but it's the heat of the race. He wasn't thinking ahead of himself, he cut in to block Nuguse from out-kicking him. Trust me, it's what you would do. Hocker could have gone 3:35 flat if he didn't cut in, and Nuguse 3:35.4 (?). He wanted the win the most risk-free way possible, even though he could have won with a bigger margin of victory.
