I can't stop now, I'm at 25 candles a day and can't possibly go any lower. When I'm working, I have to take a candle break every few hours. Sometimes I sneak off to the toilet for a cheeky candle.
The first step in any treatment is knowing you have a problem so you’re on your way to recovery and a candle free life.
Hey I got those birthday candles. Perfect to slip off during shift for a quick burn. Hit me up !!!
Haha

someone needs to see the addictions and rehab centre. this is worrying stuff
Food $200
Data $150
Rent $800
Candles $3,600
Utility $150

You should spend more on candles and spend less on food
perhaps lower your food, date, rent and utility budget to £0 so you have more money for candles
Skip the rent for more candles. Problem solved.
Classic. 😅
Just start eating the candles and invest the $200 on crypto
I remember the first time I tried a candle. It was junior year of high school, and I was the awkward kid trying desperately to fit in with the popular kids. They were a glittering group of kids who seemed to have everything figured out. I thought if I could just find a way to blend in, my life would be easier.
One day, after class, I noticed them huddled in a corner of the locker room. My heart pounded as I approached. "Hey, what are you guys doing?" I asked, trying to sound casual.
Chad, the charismatic leader of the group, looked up and smirked. "You wanna try something that’ll totally chill you out?" he said, holding up a small, colorful tin.
"Uh, sure," I replied, eager to be part of whatever they were doing. My nerves were practically buzzing.
He opened the tin, revealing a pristine vanilla-scented candle. "Just light it up and breathe it in," he instructed, striking a match. The flame flickered to life, casting an almost hypnotic glow.
"Isn't that just a candle?" I asked, incredulous, hoping not to sound too naive.
"Shh," Chad said, putting a finger to his lips. "It's Vanilla scented !!"
Before I knew it, I was taking deep breaths, inhaling the sweet, warm aroma. My awkwardness seemed to melt away. "Wow," I murmured, "this is amazing."
From that day on, I was hooked. Candles became my secret escape. Lavender, cinnamon, sandalwood - you name it, I burned it. I started keeping a stash in my locker, hidden behind my textbooks. I'd sneak off to the restroom between classes for a quick light-up session. The teachers never suspected a thing, though they often remarked on how calming the hallways smelled.
Fast forward a few years, and my candle addiction had only intensified. I couldn't start my day without lighting up a fresh pillar of pine. My friends would joke, "Oh, here comes the human incense stick!" But they didn't understand. Candles had become my crutch.
Now, I burn through ten candles a day, minimum. My apartment looks like a shrine to every scent imaginable. There are times when I wonder if I might have a problem.
Once, I decided to quit. I packed away all my candles and went cold turkey. The first night was hell. I lay in the dark, tossing and turning, desperate for just a hint of bergamot. By morning, I was a wreck, and my place reeked of desperation and failed resolve. I caved and tore open a pack of emergency tea lights I kept hidden in the closet. The relief was instantaneous.
My family staged an intervention last Christmas. "We think you need help," my mom said gently, handing me a brochure for Candle Addicts Anonymous. My brother added, "Dude, your car even smells like a Bed Bath & Beyond."
So here I am, attending weekly meetings and learning to live one day - and one scent - at a time. I still slip up occasionally, like last week when I found a hidden jasmine votive in my desk drawer. But I'm trying. I know the road to recovery is long and winding, much like the trails of smoke that still sometimes curl through my apartment.
This video saves my life, this helps me realise I don't need help 🥹. I'm normal
I can't stop laughing
I'm so sorry❤ you are very strong and I'm glad you know that. Never, NEVER let the candles win. Let it be the end of them!

THANK YOU for making this video! I own a handmade candle business and it’s frustrating when people come into my booth telling me how toxic candles are.
Like, I would never sell you something knowing it’s toxic and without doing my due research….🤦🏽♀️
THAT is an artform. I don't like the scented candles at the stores mass produced. But homemade is a whole different ball of wax.
YOU might not, but there are many people that make garbage ingredient products who just care about making a buck.
From one chandler to another. The amount of testing that we do and the materials we buy to make sure everything is safe and performing well. It's no joke.
I really hate people like that. I’m sorry you get these disgusting pricks. Like the old saying goes, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all. They could literally keep walking, but decide to waste their time, energy, and breath to be rude. Urgh.
Yes! We test soooo much and bias aside, I always say to people to buy from small businesses, even if it's not mine. I know most of us go through the ringer testing our candles and buy good quality ingredients.

Littering those cigs leeches all those toxins into the environment though... people need to use ash trays not throw them all over the ground outside 😢
There's also torturing people with allergies. It's not just about death, it's about living a nightmare
Even if your house doesn't burn down, we had to redecorate all our rooms after only a year and a half of using Yankee candles in multiple rooms as everything was covered in soot which you don't notice at first as it's a slow coverage process.
I'd felt our rooms were feeling darker and then our kid spilt juice on our painted walls and when I tried to clean it I couldn't believe how much soot came off and how much lighter the walls were underneath and it took ages to come off but once you start on a spot you have to do the whole room which took days.
In the end we had to get people in to redecorate all the rooms and I noticed my cleaning had only got us half way back to the original colors.
So after only probably 10 Yankee candles we were nearly £2k down from having to redecorate. Not worth it and they are band in my house.
@@Chobbito I have no idea what yankee candles are but don't you clean every know and then???
@@andres-vi1uyYankee is just a named brand of strong scented candles in the UK/EU. To be fair in 20 years of home ownership we've never needed to clean painted (or wallpapered) walls or painted ceilings before my wife started with Candles or before having a child.
As an asthmatic candle maker, I approve of this video lol!
Most smaller candle companies today are phthalate free. I make sure all my oils are free of them and many other small businesses do as well. Great video ❤
Yes! I make sure all fragrances I select are phthalate free fragrances
Is that why all scented candles would give me a headache?
I can't even go into a shop or a section of a store with scented candles without getting a headache in the first couple of minutes. It's so bad that is anyone gives me a scented candle, I have to regift it
@@dermaspaceSC it is more than likely just the amount of fragrance they use. They overload it with fragrance oil and then over wick the candle so it burns fast and hot. A lot of larger companies also add preservatives to their formulas to make them stronger too. So you might be sensitive to fragrances in general but I would try a small companies candle and see how it affects you!
@@dermaspaceSCYeah I get headaches from them too. I definitely find that I'm more tolerant to natural scents such as essential oils, rather than products that use parfum/synthetic fragrances.
If you find yourself sensitive to artificial fragrances in general, always look for parfum on the back of a bottle. Synthetic fragrances are in everything from shampoos & body wash to moisturisers and even some sunscreens.
@MangoPanic I do. What's scary is parfum can legally be anything and sometimes is liquid plastic (there's a documentary called Bag It that goes into detail about that). I'm an esthetician and the lines I use don't use unnecessary fragrances and I often make my own things just to keep it simple.
The fact that we blow out candles when celebrating birthdays makes "freshly blown out candle" smell like "party" and gives it a very positive association (at least in my experience).

I love how the answer is never a straight yes or no, it's always more complicated than that... and so well explained when Dr Mike is on mic! Thank you 🙌❤️
Experts that have all easy answers are rarely experts.
The answer was a straight no though. Using scented candles for an hour is *not* so bad as lighting up a cigarette. He did explain this pretty well though!
@@kairostimeYT Yes, but the point is not as much "is a scented candle as dangerous as a cigarette" than "are candles, especially scented candles, bad for one's health".
Actually it is a straight yes or no. No candles aren’t worse then smoking.
@@clementwymiens7955but that wasn’t the title question. The title question is Are scented candles worse than cigarettes? No
I always put "out" my jar candles by putting the lid back on and letting the candle burn up the remaining oxygen and extinguish itself to stop the sooty "fumes" from getting in to the room.
i do this as well
I usually use a straightened out paperclip to submerge the wick in the melted wax. Puts it out and cools the wick immediately
Same
Yes. You should stop doing that. It will result in incomplete combustion and you will be exposed to it when you open it again. Snuff it out with a spoon or something.
@@misterniceguy6993 If the lid is on, any airborne soot could coat the sides of the jar and the lid, or settle out of the air onto the surface of the candle. If you put it out with a spoon, that wisp of smoke when it goes out could become airborne and wouldn't be trapped in a small space.
I recently got myself a candle warming lamp for my bedside table.
No joke.
I get the scent without the fire hazard.
I just have to keep some extra bulbs around. It's really nice.
You should still be careful when using a candle warmer with paraffin wax candles. Don’t leave it on for too long and make sure the room is well ventilated

During the COVID lockdown I developed a really annoying course cough that lasted a few months, but knew it wasn't COVID due to testing. It actually started to worry me quite a bit. My mum eventually happened to come round when restrictions eased and then suggested it could be that the candle was triggering my asthma. I'd been spending most of my time in one small room working most days, and often had a scented candle on the go to try and help keep the room smelling fresh. As soon as I stopped using candles, the cough went away.
That’s how it was when my college roommate had a scent plug in, in the room I had headaches, burning eyes and couldn’t breathe, I moved out of that room instantly felt so much better
You know maybe why I have this cough but I also have allergies so idk
Doc Mike is the perfect person to make a series like this. He's educated, reputable, and he has good common sense and don't scare monger. He uses facts paird with nuance.
I have asthma and my wife got into scented candles a while back ago. She would have 1-2 burning every day and I started noticing problems breathing and a serious wheezing in my lungs. I realized that it got worse when I went in rooms that she had a candle lit in. I explained the problem to her and now she might use one of those candles once or twice a year for a couple of hours. When it starts giving me problems it goes out and put up for a long time. I have a similar problem with things like perfume, strong cleaners etc. So it probably won't do something to everyone but it obviously does do something.
If I'm gonna die by too much or too many candles around me it's really going to be the most peaceful.
Love this series. Truth or Scare is so needed in a world where people never check sources.
Love, love, love this! And as the granddaughter of a former firefighter and dispatcher I also love your reminder never to leave candles unattended, I know someone who was running in the house as a toddler and accidentally knocked into a table with a burning candle on it and it fell over and burned their hand.
I was scared when I saw the thumbnail. But I'm now happy to let the candle addiction carry on.
Thank you Dr Mike.
Now lets talk about incense
I'd imagine it's a little worse than candles but similarly, well ventilated occasional use shouldn't be a problem and it's probably as safe or safer than a wood burning stove or indoor fireplace which was stated to be safe in the video. I'm no doctor but these seem like reasonable inferences based on the vid

Next do the FÜM or whatever it’s called, inhaling essential oils doesn’t seem okay to me but i’ve seen sponsorships on youtube claiming it’s “healthy” and “organic” whatever that’s supposed to mean. Scary seeing some channels with lots of followers advocating for it with minimal research shown.
Not a doctor but no one is supposed to **directly inhale or ingest essential oils in any way. There are no food grade essential oils. There are extracts, which have to meet a legal food grade standard, and then there are essential oils, which are required to place on their labeling “this product has not been reviewed by the FDA”. That disclaimer NEVER means a product is healthier because the FDA didn’t examine it. Rather, it means that the FDA has absolutely no clue if the ingredients are what the manufacturer says they are. Essential oils were only supposed to be placed on the skin (with the help of a thicker, bland oil like coconut or olive, NEVER straight onto the skin) or placed into water reservoirs and diffused into the air for MILD inhalation. But even the mild inhalation is a serious risk to someone if they are allergic to any ingredient within the oil, and essential oils DO kill pets, especially cats, all the time. Regardless of the type of essential oil, cats’ bodies do not react well to the concentration levels and they can literally hemorrhage internally until passing away.
All in all, directly huffing an essential oil or a blend of essential oils the way you would a cigarette, while it MAY NOT (again, the FDA can’t promise you anything one way or the other) introduce the same levels of fromaldehyde and benzene that tobacco would, you honestly have no idea what you are huffing. You have a decent guess, and if you have allergies you do not know about you can really end up in an awful, painful position.
Source: My mom is an idiot health nut and I am allergic to many essential oils.
Yeah I’m sure vamping is quite medicinal, surely it could replace even inhalers!
Too funny, I actually tacked that on as an issue to my comment above. One of the biggest issues with essential oils is that vaporizing some of them with diffusers can be toxic to your pets including dogs, cats and especially birds. I included a list of which ones and a link to the SPCA article.
The only things that are supposed to go into your lungs are air and water vapor. The test of time has a 100% track record for showing that repeatedly and intentionally putting stuff in healthy lungs that normally wouldn't be there is bad for your lungs. Basically the only exception to this rule is vaporized medication (for example for asthma sufferers) because the benefits outweigh the downsides.
@@helenemalenfant5435I used to use an oil diffuser until our cat got sick and died and that's exactly what the vet said happened

One of my inhabitants bought a canary some time ago. She had it only for a week.
She has scented candles in her apartment in the extramural housing. Apparently they released enough stuff to murder the canary very quickly. Of course the apartments are old and aren't very well ventilated but... Yeah that reminded me that both ventilation and burning in general are both peculiarly important to think about.
She said she was told it was the scented candles. As one of her primary social workers I had to remind her that her ventilation in the apartment is also a problem. Probably a larger one than the candles.
birds are very sensitive creatures.
Most essential oils are toxic to most animals, so I would not be surprised that inhaling the chemicals from a scented candle in a low ventilated area killed the bird.
Birds are EXTREMELY sensitive to air quality. They used to take birds into mine shafts to see if the air was toxic. Poisonous gas like carbon monoxide is a real problem in mines, but the birds would die before the humans felt any adverse effects.
An oven's self-clean cycle can kill a bird.
@@Zyk0th Fun fact: The canaries they took into mines would fall unconscious before they actually died most of the time, and since the miners would evacuate as soon as the bird stopped singing and usually took the birdcage with them, the canaries didn't always die. Many of them recovered once they were out in the clear air again.
@@stewi009 That's actually pretty interesting.
While I don't know about the health effects, the soot from burning too many candles can damage or lessen the ability of an AC filter to work. That in turn would damage your AC unit.
And if they can do that, we certainly don't want to breathe them either. I think this vide9 kind of underestimates the degree to which some people never open their windows and live in a dungeon of fragrance, cleaning product, frozen food aroma, and farts.

I’ve been using flameless candles for decorating but I’m currently obsessed with scented candles and making my space smell good. I recently got some candle warming lamps and I looove them and highly recommend them if you’re looking for safer flame free options for scented candles. It just warms them up so no fire or soot to worry about. You still get the scent and the candles last longer. I also use oil defusers that look like flams instead of burning oil.
I wonder if society will ever get it through their heads that inhaling smoke is always less than 100% healthy, but dose matters. Enjoying a candle is definitely nowhere near holding a burning bundle of leaves up to your face and enthusiastically inhaling the smoke from that multiple times a day

All scents are VOCs.
Thank you for this informative video. This year I added the scented candles line to my brand that I make myself with pure soy wax and fragrances free of phtalates, so your video was important for me. When I started to make the candles for my brand and testing them I was super proud that they NEVER had even a minimum amount of black soot! To be honest it was a very important part for me not only for health reasons but also because, when the candle releases black soot it can ruin the light colored things near it and it also doesn't look good when the candle vessel becomes black. All the candles that I bought before in the stores usually created black soot so I was really proud that I managed to create a quality product that doesn't have this problem.
When smoking a cigarette, you directly inhale all of the cigarettes smoke. When you light a candle, you’re not floating over the flame and a lot of the times, you leave the room where the candle is lit.

I like this video. I used to work for Yankee Candle, and all the reducing soot recommendations you had at the end are so similar to what yankee's employees are trained to tell customers whenever they purchase a candle. Do some people actually have issues with paraffin wax? Yes, some people can get headaches from it, and that includes using the wax melts/warmers. Synthetic fragrance vs oils for scent (and how strong the scent is) makes a difference for some people too.
I switched to some mildly-scented beeswax candles a while ago, and they're great. I was recently gifted a bath and body works candle, and this thing gave me the biggest headache when I burned it! It could have been because of how intense the scent was, or it could have been something else; I honestly don't know, and I don't know what they use in their candles. I'm guessing scent, because I also get headaches just from being around laundry detergent being used.
Imagine when electricity wasn't used yet and people just burned everything to keep warm and have light.
They had opiates in their cough drops back then.
You mean when life expectancy was 20 years less than today?
Yeah, those sure were the days!
thats why they only lived up to 25
Hmm. That could explain how some people who didn’t smoke had lung damage as if they did? They used wood burning stoves to heat their home for most of their lives.
After a whole hectic day, a new series declaration in Mike's channel was all I truly needed....❤😊
Just use peppermint extract located in your baking area. Use a toothpick to open a small hole. Put a couple drops on a damp rag or washcloth and wipe down whatever you want to freshen up. You can put it straight in a kitchen sink or put a couple of drops in a toilet and flush. I also use it in my laundry as my detergents are unscented. Food safe, slightly antibacterial, fresh smelling and fairly cheap.
As a bonus, bugs don't like the smell and it is a disrupter for ant paths. I live in Florida. That means a lot. I like regular candles not scented. The scented candle craze just never hit me.
Thanks for the info!
I’m in Florida also so any natural bug repellent is great!

I've always said that I have difficulty breathing when candles are burning and people tell me I'm just being fussy. Just like they said I was being fussy (in the 70s and 80s) when I would complain about cigarettes at parties. Don't know anything about toxic fumes or whatever but I am affected negatively. I can power through it but after several hours, it does become difficult.
you should probably go to a dr, that level of sensitivity is not normal
This is an awesome series that looking forward to watching more of.
My wife has PCOS and over the years as she has learned more and more, we have been eliminating things from our lives. Endocrine disrupters are the latest thing she has been studying. So we have no scented things in our house. We have moved to scent free candles, detergent, cleaning supplies, and things like that. She had a panel taken the other day and her stress hormones were average. Which is incredible compared to how bad they were before she started this journey. The biggest step was eating “clean”. We like to call it compliant. That alone has fixed so many problems
What are the things to look out for? Besides fragrance. And how’s the diet? 👀
This doesn't make such a huge difference. I have PCOS too
Heck yeah. Good luck with the new Series. As Im laying here in my van in the Australian outback with a mosquito candle burning.. SAFETY THIRD
I worked at a hair salon yrs ago that had candles burning in it all day long. My co-workers & I kept getting headaches until we asked the owner to stop burning candles. When she stopped our headaches went away.
Totally agree with this re candles - paint is also really bad for VOC emission and air fresheners are terrible too
"Sootible" omfg Doc! This was really informative, thank you!
Thank you, Doctor Mike! I want to make videos fighting medical misinformation because of you. Just have to get things sorted out first😅
Heck yes! Truth or Scare is such a good idea, I'm totally along for this ride 💯 I'm already hooked.
Love this!! I was only allowed to light candles if I was making Swiss raclette, otherwise no since that’s a common cause of house fires.
I believe it. I’ve been sent to the ER with scented candles. I have allergies and asthma.
I've been in religious churches and temples where literally hundreds of candles are burning around the clock. The elderly monks, priests, nuns, etc. who reside at these places seem perfectly fine to me. I'm pretty sure that one or two scented candles in a whole house are nothing to worry about. People really need to get a life.
@@The_SeoulJourner I believe you are talking about alter candles, candles of higher cost made specifically for church ceremonies. I'm talking about the dozens or even hundreds of inexpensive votive candles that I've seen in prayer niches, vaults, crypts, temples, apses and mausoleums in various places of worship throughout the world. Many of these locations do not have high ceilings, and I doubt many of these places are exclusively using bees wax candles due to their higher cost. The contents of these votive candles aren't any different from most scented candles, except they may not have fragrance added. And like I said, easily a hundred of these votive candles are burning at a time, around the clock. People are just being paranoid.
Then you have many religious sites, such as Buddhist temples, that are burning incense around the clock. The scent and smoke of burned incense hangs heavy in the air. I'm sure the contents of burned incense, which produces visible smoke, are far more potentially hazardous than scented candles. And yet, Buddhist monks who reside at these facilities aren't all dying of cancer. Again, I think people are being paranoid.
This won't stop me from burning candles. I also burn scent tarts for added aroma. I take all the necessary precautions .🔥

Tip for reducing candle soot: put your candle in a glass lantern. They usually have little doors to switch out and light candles, and a small amount of ventilation at the top. The soot mostly stays inside the lantern. Because of that, it’s easy to clean and reuse basically forever. There are so many varieties of them, too, and they look super cool! 😊
Keep the wic low! Wic cutters are perfect you tilt the scissors on it’s side and it will clip at 1/4 inch
This must be my favourite series that you've done so far! Please keep doing more of them ❤️
School 🏫 ❌ Dr. Mike👨⚕️ ✅
You said it right 😂
You should probably still go to school tho
Definitely gotta have independent critical thinking to judge things yourself
Jokes aside, no
Well, actually in reality, generalized knowledge in all of the scientific fields is better that random tit-bits, mate.
As somebody that currently works at a candle shop, I appreciate that video. No doubt I will have people coming in and asking those questions and I'll gladly direct them to this video to remove any doubts they have!
Burning candles, incense, cigarettes, etc. Trigger my asthma episodes & coughing fits.
The only candles I like are ones with battery powered tea lights.
Me too.
From this video, I learnt that the American accent saying ‘soot’ is incredible 💖
I actually make candles and I have to educate and fight this a lot. I see so many claims. Thanks Dr. Mike! All of the fragrances I use are phthalate free! It's also why I test my candles A LOT to make sure everything is burning correctly and the hot throw (the scent you smell when the candle is lit) is consistent.
Would you recommand instead burning aromatiks oils ? The process is similar but you don't have to use flames, most are plugged in the wall and slowly melt the cube of oil and the sent is pushed into the air, combined with a fan I found it awesome.
I'm guessing if it comes in cube form, those are scented wax melts. A lot of the same ingredients that are in candles. That's my question as well.
As a person with lungs that are sensitive, those wall plug-ins are the worst for impacting my breathing. Scented candles aren't nearly as bad.
@@tamiburoker1211 I can't stand wall plug ins
If it's not burning, then there's no soot, so there shouldn't be a problem
THANK GOODNESS cause I love me a good scented candle. Thanks doc!
All I know is I get sick as a dog when around scented candles. I view scented candles in the same light as second hand smoke.
The only people who need to refrain or limit candle usage are those with respiratory illnesses such as COPD and Asthma. In addition to those with sensitivity to fragrances.
Thank you!!! Ive been saying this for 20 years! Scented candles are terrible for you. I cwnt tolerate them personally as the combination of fragrance allergies and wax residue in the air is too much for me
Walk down any street with cars driving on it and I guarantee the air you're breathing is 5000x worse than the air around your scented candle.
Exactly!
Nah. You're outside with constantly moving air which dilutes harmful chemicals. Being stuck in a room with candles could be worse.
Can't wait for more of this series!!! It is so needed right now
I've alway thought this about the candles!! Super Interesting! Fun Vid Dr. Mike!
One thing you didn't touch on but I wish you would have, what about wax warmers or candle warmers? Since they aren't burning anything with flame would they be safer (than the already pretty safe scented candle)? If you aren't familiar with them they are usually a hot plate you place a candle on and it warms the candle to melt the wax and release the scent, sometimes it's done with the heat from an incandescent/ir heat lamp light bulb. Obviously the risk of burning still exists but since no flame, no soot, should be slightly better if you wanted to have that scent from a scented candle, right?
My husband said no candles when I was pregnant and after our child was born.
I was grateful he did, because babies can develop asthma with chemical smells and soot.
Later, as a toddler, she had sensitive skin (as most young children do), and was allergic to perfumes and dyes. Proving my husband right for banning candles.
Now, I can't even take the smells of candles, and my dr told me I have been overexposed to too many artificial chemicals my oldactory system has been overwhelmed and shut down. I also have developed minor asthma. It is absolutely possible to overdo chemical exposure.
