  • Aimee shares her personal journey and its central influence, yoga. She will introduce the audience to the philosophy behind yoga and emphasize how yoga is gaining mass appeal not by strengthening its students physically, but spiritually.
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    It should be compulsory in all schools to start the day with Yoga, and end in Meditation. It would solve a lot of problems

      I have really wanted to do this in my classes, but I am nervous that I would be accused of teaching a specific "religion" or "philosophy" in my public school. Not only that, the younger students have a difficult time sitting still! LOL.

      The great Hindu poet and playwright, Rabindranath Tagore did exactly that. He had a school with the children practiced meditation, had outdoor classes, a lot of creative arts...

      in india we tried to make yoga a compulsory health practice but muslims were like hindus are imposing their religion on us so we had to cancel it althogh 80% indians are hindus and 6% other dharmic relgions like sikh,jain,buddist and they all believe in yoga and meditation

    You are so inspirational! I had a similar story! It was dance that gave me the willingness to live but I am still struggling with self- acceptance! Until recently when I realised that yoga has this transformational power and listening to you today something was awakened! Thank you so much!

    I have lived most of my life as my own worst enemy.I have been diagnosed with with bipolar 1,CPTSD,ADHD,panic attacks,and a dissociative disorder as well as developing epilepsy in my 20s as a result of my drug use.I am now 46,seizure free,and am happier and healthier than I have ever been!I eat a whole food diet(fruits,veggies,whole grains,limited fish and dairy,and no processed foods,meat,or sugar).I exercise every day,I meditate,do yoga,stopped watching the news and limit my screen time.More importantly though I began to develop true compassion for myself and stopped fighting against myself.The mind/body knows how to heal itself,I just had to get out of my own way!

    Awesome. And I loved how Aimee explained why we "forget" that we are One with the Divine. This is something that I've been wondering, but the way she explained it made an incredible amount of sense. Beautiful talk :)

    • @nfcoard
      @nfcoard 8 років тому +1

      +Dana Tracy Yes, and the experiential forgetting that we are One with The Infinite One, allows us to experientially remember that we are One. That experience is a feeling of the highest bliss and theexperience of perfect love. The full awareness/experience of Oneness is the ultimate goal of meditation and yoga. In that experience there is no consciousness of separation. You experience yourself as The One/The Divine without losing awareness of the individuated aspect of you. Some call it Samadhi.

    Sadly this talk is shot through with inaccurate references and paradoxical arguments. She talks about 'narrative' rather a lot. I understand that by this she means "the internal dialogue" that goes on in the background of the mind continuously. The serious student of yoga aims to stop this dialogue. When this is achieved, true freedom is also achieved. Different yogas use different means to achieve this. By the way Eienstein was never described by his teachers as 'slow' or 'backward' This is a mis-quote that is often repeated but is quite untrue.

    • @aimeesenise
      @aimeesenise 7 років тому +6

      Hi! I appreciate you took the time to give feedback on my talk. Sorry to perpetuate the Einstein misquote. I admit I did not do primary research for that inclusion. By narrative, I mean the explanatory stories we create about ourselves to understand who we are. For instance, having a fixed idea of what a serious student of yoga is and should or shouldn't do is a narrative. That is, it's not a fact. It's just a personal idea held to keep your vision of the world holding together.

      +Dan Taylor Hmmm, it seemed more to me that she was contrasting the mental benefits of two forms of physical activity and not necessarily the people who prescribe to those activities. I can see how that could be implied, though. She would have done better to note that everyone isn't on the elliptical searching for enlightenment. There are many who enjoy both elliptical and yoga, as each has it's own set of benefits. Those who are on the search for a deeper meaning in life, are probably not just going to the gym and doing nothing else, but couldn't we argue that any form or workout could, in fact, be yoga? It's really about mind over matter, not asanas.
