How I Paint Skin! Character Concept Art Tutorial
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- Good Morning! Today I wanted to take a look at one approach to start painting in some type of skin tone into your own characters! This process can be used for a variety of skin tones and colors, and I hope this is mainly just a way for you to think about how to approach and think about slowly rendering a face up with it in mind. Thanks so much everyone!

super small thing but I really appreciate how you said "How *I* Paint Skin" instead of "How *To* Paint Skin"
That's super important imo. So many videos of how to do this and that like its THE way.. best thing we can do is take small tips here and there and find out what works best for all of us.
Explaining your process as you do it is so much better than watching time lapse videos. There's tons of videos where artists will speed things up, and they just can't fit as many wisdom nuggets in.
Thanks! Yeah sometimes a piece doesn't come out exactly perfect since its like "I hope this comes out well"! but its more of a process right and how to go about thinking about it.
i agree i hate watching timelapse for tutorials cuz you miss so much.. but i still like watching a speed paint for the basic idea.. but when you gotta learn something speed is the worst way to go.. the novice needs to see the nuances the master goes through to get something done..
I believe they speed it up on purpose and the title "time lapse tutorial" is intentional for click bait purposes
DUDE?!? Are you like in my mind because this is everything I needed right now.
haha! tryin!
I must say, this is the most detailed description of the how to think around the shape process. Wicked! Phanx
Have been watching many skin tutorials, your layed back approach seemed to work on me, I finally painted some decent skin. Thanks!
Very awesome!
This is honestly such a fantastic and in-depth tutorial, thank you so much for not making it a speed paint but discussing your choices and explaining them as you paint. I really hope you'll continue making the step by step videos like you mentioned in this one, I'm really looking forward to going through your channel and for your future work! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and tips!
Honestly this is the most succesful skin painting tutorial I could ever follow in like 7 years dude. You show what others don't have the patience or the capability to explain. Congratulations, and thanks very much!
I would love you as my art teacher, you have broken it down and explained it in detail. God bless you for taking the time to do this, I'm one of your fans now. Thank you for showing the tools you use, where to place the layers and please, please keep doing this. Thank you for not doing those time lapse things, thank you for explaining in depth and doing it step by step.
That means so much! I do have some timelapse on my channel... but I definately want to keep both step by step tutorials in channel.. and lapse! Thanks so much!
Love your teaching method. Watching you paint real-time with your commentary about why you're painting what you're painting...is refreshing. Thanks!
finally finding a digital artist (professional) who works just as messy as i (nonprofessional) do. i love how you don't have a strict approach to your pieces! your work is amazing! thank you for showing us the whole process and with such detail and great explanations/tips.
It's crazy how just a few different values and strokes can make the face look so alive and 3D.
This is the best tutorial on how to paint skin.
i love these videos. being able to see you paint in real time with explanations is actually very helpful for starting artists like me
This video is fantastic I don’t think people realise how sometimes it’s hard to convey your style and way of working. This is the first video I’ve seen that really captures the development of a piece. And the way to really evolve a piece of work from a line painting to a soft traditional digital paint beautiful and so inspiring Thankyou !!
I love this tutorial so much. It's actually soo helpful! Some tutorials really leave you to figure out stuff on your own which doesn't help all the time! I always come straight to this when I'm drawing humans 😊❤
awesome glad you enjoyed it! :)
This is the 3rd time I am watching this video. Anytime I need help with painting skin, I just watch this again. Thank you so much 😊
Dave, you're the only channel that makes me PUMPED to see a new uploaded video, thanks for putting out this awesome content!
thanks man! that makes me nervous! Trying to get more quality and information in each one.. don't wanna let you guys down!
omg dave, I opened up youtube to search up some skin tutorials and before I pressed enter I noticed the notification for your video! perfect timing, thank you so much!
lol thats amazing!
This is my first video of yours that I've watched, and I've already subscribed because you actually go into the thinking process and explain everything in detail. We really appreciate the time you take out of your life to teach a bunch of nobodies who are trying to learn how to be better artists. Thank you so much. This is really a gift.
Thank you. This is the most useful tutorial I found
Thank you very much! ♥ This is one of the best tutorials I've seen. Also, it's easy to follow! Thanks for not speeding the video up, you're a hero!
I'm here to help anyway I can!
there's so much help in this video, free brushes? man, i'm gonna cry... thank you so much!
I honestly have to thank you man! I'm trying to get a job as a concept artist and you're leading me there!
Awesome! And goodluck you'll get there!
Did you get it?
I have a sketch that looks just like yours and I need to digitalize it for a very important school project.
Thank you so so so sooo much for this tutorial, I finally found a painting style that fits my stylistic choices.
I'm so grateful! Thank you so much for this tutorial and sharing your precious brushes with us!
Hey Dave, just a quick com to say thank you very much for all your videos. For real, thank you very very much
A fantastic video and as others have said much better than watching time-lapse videos which do you little to assist those who are very much at the beginning or beginner stage and it was very cool of you to make your brushes freely available. I don't have any natural talent and therefore struggle to use shadows and highlights properly. I've watched a load of UA-cam taking grey scale to colour and this video of yours was the first one which really make sense and agree with all the comments below -thank you so much for giving up your time
Thank you for making the brushes available to all. They are fantastic!
quickly becoming one of my favorite youtube artists!
After taking a massive several year break from art has been difficult... These tutorials are killer!!
This really helped, it's basic enough so people can just take tips on how to blend skin, mainly for me is the layers, I didn't know when to add what. I'll take some of this from you, thank you!! Its gonna help me a lot.
this was sooooooo helpful for real! i watched so many stuff but nothing compared to this. Thank you!
Thank you very much for you tutorials. As a thank you, today I brought your brushes and a high res painting..
I am in love with this video. Rather than just learning for the sake of learning, this makes me feel like I'm in a conversation. I can't wait to get started on my career show I can share what you taught me to others. Emo mode off now.
Thanks so much!
This channel is gonna blow up soon, I sense it. Your concept art videos are sooo interesting to watch really and I learn a lot of new things since I just started out with Photoshop and it's still very confusing to me :) thanks a lot!!
Aw heres hoping and thanks so much for checking it out!! means everything! :)
Love your process, it makes painting much more enjoyable overall going around the piece and blending. Thanks for sharing :)
most amazing video explaining painting, every body just time lapse showing how cool they work, but you actually are very helpful explaining your process, thank you. it's really gold.
This was cool. The way you narrate through reminded me so much of Bob Ross. Even in the voice tone. That's not a bad thing. I guess he kind of invented the paint along with me format so it makes sense.
Thanks so much glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much for this, I really appreciate how you took your time in demonstrating and explaining the process
Definitely one of the best art explanations ive seen. Just loved watching it. Please do keep it up
Thank you for making these videos
I learned a lot from them :)
thank you very much for the video and brushes, this was very helpful
adding bright highlights and deep shadows are the like the best part of painting for me. its like the part i relish the most haha, after all of the blending finally pays off we get to add a satisfying highlight and shadow.
thanks for the chill video and I am excited to try your brushes!
you are amazing for taking from your time to make us these videos ! thanks a lot !
Thanks!!! I am now drawing everything with that DG MAIN brush hahah
You're so helpful omg
Thanks man i really looking video like this really was helpful
Dave these are so fantastic! Love your walk-throughs, and they are so much more effective teaching wise than just a time-lapse. This one was spot on :) Also, in regards to the saturation climbing... of late I've been letting myself run a little hot in that regard too, then just finish the piece with a touchup de-sat layer with a concealer mask set -- then re-apply the saturation as needed. [ oh yeah, and mad props to the character herself -- she was/is just gobsmackingly beautiful -- in line work, illustrated or painted! ]
thank you so much for this video, it’s sooo helpful!
Great video Dave. I hope your channel grows fast and reach out to viewers that is searching good tips like you're sharing.
Thanks so much Ricardo, I hope so as well! I just want to help anyway I can.
This really helped me! I didnt know how to cover over line art so i just had weird sketches with color under it, but There is so much detail you put in this thank you!
Ahoy Dave! I just want to tell you that I greatly appreciate this skin painting video and I am planning on face planting into many of your others as this week goes along. I am already a follower of your Instagram and because of that I recognized your name when it came up on my UA-cam! I am a big fan of your painting style and am trying to get better at carrying my pencil heavy illustration techniques into digital painting and your style among others feels very natural to me! If you would like I will tag you when I post the Overwatch Mercy piece I am currently working through and will be applying these lessons to! Again, thank you and please know that you help we artists a ton when you make and share these! Much love from Derrick "Captain Dutz" Utz! (P.S. - Thanks for the brushes too!!!)
best thing youtube has suggested ,thank you for this video, you have earned a follower :)
Love this! Super helpful and inspiring. Would be cool if you could allow people to download the line-art so they can follow along with you. Just a thought :). Thanks for the videos!
All you need to do is prt scrn and then paste it into a layer.
Thanks again for great concise demo. I Personally love the talking aloud about thought process behind decision making. As a new/learning artist I am very curious about how professional artists stay organized and what their standard operating procedure is.
I just wanted to suggest/ask to define the light source early on, I think would really help with decision making for where to add light/dark values and highlights, might help people be able to visualize and follow along more easily. Thanks again dude, great channel!
I love your brush.
This is super helpful! Really appreciate your time Dave!
Was awesome catching one of your streams yesterday Dave! Been watching a bunch of your videos on different techniques haha. Super excited to get into drawing. You have a very good way of explaining things that makes them easy to understand - hopefully i can put it all into theory as well and get somewhere with it! Cintiq 24 Pro arrives on Tuesday :D Then its time to put it all into practice!
These are great, very helpful! Thanks for sharing your process!
Q: How do you come up and deal with environment concepts?
I'd love to hear your tips about it! Great video.
I love, love, love, love, love, love this tutorial
I really enjoyed your video. Very helpful
Thanks Dave! I love the content man. I cant wait to see more full process videos. You work inspires me and your tutorials help me. Thank you and please continue doing what you're doing.

Thank you for sharing your brushes.
Really great video. Love this tut! Thank you :)
Thank you Dave! I'm crazy excited to try out these techniques. So glad you mentioned simple things I didn't know like grabbing everything with cntrl+shift+c, using overlay layers, and ways to achieve an organic feel. Also, I saw you at Lightbox Expo! It was awesome!! I love all your work.
What screen cap software do you use here? Thanks again!
I’m a total beginner and this is way out of scope, but I’ve enjoyed the video quite a lot. Thank you very much. Great job
Gosh I love this, excellent
guide
OMG I learned so much THANK YOU :)
Super helpful!!! The color picker thing keeps appearing around your cursor--is that just you selecting the colors on the edges of the highlight to blend it?
yes and he does so quickly by pressing alt on the keyboard
He explains that technique on this video in his channel
ua-cam.com/video/-oPp6NE4WL8/v-deo.html
Very helpful video! Can you do another skin tutorial video but with dynamic lighting? but still detailed as this. Please ^^
"We'll call this one base color... If I could type."
...
"BASE COLOE"
XD
Beautiful painting, it is nice to see some artist go through the process in real-time. Thank you.
I don't usually watch videos like this. The artist is usually monotone and boring, not explaining much as they go along but I thoroughly enjoyed watching all 30 minutes of this video.
Thank you so much! that means alot
I've rewatched this video so many times because it's so helpful. Thank you!!
You're amazing ty!!
Обожаю этот канал. Великолепные работы. Отдельное спасибо за туториалы :з
Thank you very much sir!! You are the best
17:42 this is so trueeeee, thanks for this tutorial ! I have a question, when you were painting it said 100% opacity but it looks so much that you were like 10%, is it because of the brush? the opacity jitter ?
I want to know this too but he probably won’t answer. :( he doesn’t get those hard edges and I don’t know why...I tried not pressing the pen hard but I don’t get the same effect as he does anyway
Bless you dude. Really.
