Loved it. As a motorcycle desert racer, The BAJA was, and still is for me The Super Bowl of off road racing. Never got to compete, but still look forward to someday driving down the course. Thanks for showin this historic film.
I was there at the first Baja as a kid later I raced trucks and xr500rs too txs for bring me back at63 I still ride my xr s in the Mojave desert great videos muchas gracias Brenda's dad
Great video for the NORRA Mexican 1000, which is now a vintage flavored race, (has classes for vintage trophy winning vehicles and new vehicles). This years race starts in 2 days, from Mexicali.
Wish there was a version of this movie for the 1972 running of the Mexican 1000. My father was class winner for Baja Bugs. It would be nice to see some video of him in his racing days before I was born.
Great video! Thanks for sharing this. The best thing in it? Ak Miller's 1967 Ranchero with Cragars! I don't know him but it just shows you how much the racing down there has changed the roads. Thanks again!
What a great thing. It's amazing how stock some of them look, compared to today's desert beasts. Of all the types of auto racing, that's the one I would've most liked to do.
I recognize a sound clip, when he's talking about the end of pavement, from an intro to an old Propellerheads song. 6:43 ...begin to eat the dust of Baja California Anyone else catch that?
It must've been absolutely brutal for the motorcycles. The old suspensions, tires, seats, etc weren't really optimum for racing in the desert. Iron men (and women) in those days! Now they have entire huge teams for support, big sponsorship, GPS, massively bright lighting, soft suspensions (except class 11). Must've been crazy fun in those days.
I just went down from Riverside to La Paz and back up again and I can say that while improvements have been made there are still many parts that are still “day one”. Not that it was part of the race back then, but in particular going over highway 5 from Guerrero Negro to San Felipe is still really sketchy.

Back then was a real adventure today is a complete different story.

El Famoso Hotel Perla , el Malecón y El Muelle Fiscal, Que Bonito era La Ciudad de La Paz en aquellos años.
Thanks for watching. Bruce Meyers is a creative genius and the Manx is still one of best ways to have a whole lot of fun.
He's still making them and they're amazing.

+Pat Wma Thanks for watching. I think they had a great time at a time when people could do things like this for not much money and have a ball.

This, the first official race started in Tijuana, Baja California, on October 31, 1967.
Yep! I've wanted a Manx "Dune Buggy" since I was 14.
Can't wait to hear her reactions. Please share with us. Thanks.
8:26 Fun little boy is my uncle Saul Lara. Walking my grandfather's cow
If this was the first Baja 1000, why did the announcer say the winner beat the previous record by 3 hours?
Thanks for putting this video out for all to see. I always imagined making this race, but now only am a service stop.
great to see where it all started cant wait for this years race
What an excellent film! You've got to get a better quality transfer here. SERIOUSLY!
I know. Will work on that.
Get a wet transfer so those scratches will go away!

My dad and I used to go down and watch tech at the Playas de Tijuana. Then after a few years we started going south to watch.
Elmer Waring in tech at the beginning and at the finish line!
Awesome, thanks for sharing this with the world

I came here purely to find that clip. They used it on Take California

very cool! thanks for posting.

Absolutely awesome !!!!
They had teams along the route with fuel. A good question. No gas stations. Had to be organized.
My Uncle Larry Bergquist would have won but his battery went dead. He and his partner,Gary Preston won the next year!!
sara7272 Thanks for your comment. Much appreciated.
what is known about the buggy snoopy is lost what a collector has got this fire, where is it?
Crazy how technology has changed I bet with those old lights it was hard af to see at night vs what the rigs have now

De que año es este documental?

Outstanding!
I always thought that Malcolm Smith had won the overall on the 400 Husqvarna that first year. Was I wrong?
My dad (JN) a Malcolm Smith were teammates. There were two man teams in the early days.
Very good! :)
thanks!
Harry West and Dennis Cooper got 2nd place MC in 1972 or 73 - No pit crew - Last privateers to do so
What's the name of that song at the beginning ?
That song is written by Bill Virchiss.
Excuse me for the asking but...How or where the motorcycle refuel, do they had a gasoline station anywhere along the dirt road?
Thanks, Tijuana
There are fuel stops. See @10:28
My dad raced dune buggys and VW bugs. He raced Baja 500 and Baja 1000
Does anyone know the song at the beginning??
Yet another confirmation I was born too late . Lol “ A cow path created by the devil himself “
