A cheap card I really like for Marneus Calgar is "Hard Evidence". It's a spell with two separate instances of Token Creation for a single blue mana (make a 0/3 crab and investigate). With Marneus out, this will draw you 2 cards, leave you a blocker and a clue to crack for a 3rd card.
@@BushBumperBaker that’s a strange way to evaluate a card. It is draw 2 cards for 1 U with a body and for 2 more for a third card. Additionally, it works great with anointed possession, which is a card that you would probably find In a lot of lists, though it doesn’t give you more cards (if you don’t count the extra clue). The only better rate is ancestral recall and that’s banned. You always need some card draw in your deck you don’t need to recur them. With that logic I assume you think preordain and ponder are bad cards too if you can’t recur them. But luckily you decide what cards you put in your deck not me or anyone else, that’s the beauty of this game. So all in all this is just a suggestion of a card some might have missed
Does it count as two separate token creations ? Or are the two tokens created at the same time as the spell resolves ? Hence it will be only drawing one card. I just bought the deck and was thinking about this card.

This is because Create a 0/3 crab token and Investigate is identified as two separate action verbs, and as per the comprehensive rules (608.2c) they happen sequentially and not simultaneously. Another cool example of this ruling is also with one of the 40K commanders namely Imotekh the Stormlord and Wretched Confluence. On Wretched Confluence you can chose the same mode multiple times, so if you pick "Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand" 3 times and pick 3 different artifact creatures in your graveyard. Each artifact creature will leave your graveyard sequentially and not simultaneously, meaning you will make 2 Necron Warriors for each creature netting you a total of 3 creatures in hand and 6 2/2 Necrons on the board.

I think councel of the four is a good include of this deck. If you cast two spells on your turn, draw 2 cards. If your opponent drew 2 cards, draw a card. If your opponent cast 2 spells draw a card. If your opponent did both, draw 3 cards.

Awesome videosn as usual. The vehicles are going to be so good in Greasefang ! The little rat pilot got such a huge boost from 40K decks ! If I may add a little comment : I always feel that your upgrade guides lack a little of "How the deck wins" section after the "How does it plays" one. It would be nice to list shortly what the wincons are (by naming the cards or explaining the scenarii, maybe) It also puts a focus on the most important point of deckbuilding for newbies. Just my 2 cents. Love your channel.
In my opinion the Council of Four is a solid Token-Generator that fits flavorful into the Deck without disturbing the Warhammer-Style and go more into the go wide strategy :-)
Odric, Lunarch Marshall wouldn't be a bad include either since Marneus has Double Strike. Giving double strike to all your creatures seems pretty good to me!
I agree! I’m in the minority here, but I find that vigilance, +1 attack and clue tokens to be more powerful. Vigilance is crucial with the vehicle crewing and blocking
I’ve been liking the deck straight out of the box! I feel like the first cut for me is The Flesh is Weak, since it’s a bit of a nonbo with all the 1/1s we want to make. It’s nice when I play it, but then I draw into all my token creators and they basically become dead cards because The Flesh is Weak is out :/
That space marine devastator is so sick. I can't describe how pumped I am for these decks to come out. I played 40k forever, have a devastator squad in my army. So pumped
I'd say add in shorikai. Even though Marneus Calgar draw is strong, shorikai can even bring it further. Draw 2 discard 1 and make a token which trigger Calgar meaning you drawing 3 and discard 1, making a token with all just 1 mana is damn good. Second card is Inspiring Leader. It give your commander the effect "creature tokens you control get +2/+2", which make your 2/2 vigilance into a 4/4. And that is a threat on it's own on a creature. Next one is Jon Irenicus, Shattered One. His effect is beginning of your end step, you give your opponent a creature you control and that creature is goaded for the rest of the game, and it can't be sacrificed. Whenever a creature you don't control but own, you draw a card. Since you created those tokens through your own effects, they count as a creature you own, so you getting more card draws from your creatures attacking which is stupidly funny to me.

A card that I use in my Isshin deck to grant vigilance to all of my creatures is Concerted Effort. It also shares protection, meaning that with vexilus praetor, you can give all of your creatures pro-everything as long as your commander is out when concerted effort checks for keywords
I actually really like Greyfax. Been wanting to make a clues/investigate deck. Going to go with the same cuts suggested here but instead add in cards like "Rise and Shine", "Cyberdrive Awakener", "Cranial Plating", and "Tezzeret, Betrayer of Flesh". A fun go wide strategy and turning my clues into win cons and fighting alongside the Astartes seems very fun
Maybe I missed them saying something about it but a fairly budget inclusion to the deck especially for Marneus Calgar as the commander is Cathars' Crusade for 3WW enchantment that anytime a creature enters your battlefield under your control put a +1/+1 counter on every creature you control. So in a go wide token strategy in white your board of 1/1s and 2/2 tokens become giant 5/5s and 6/6s and only continue to grow. Sitting around 6-7 dollars for every one of the 5 different printings of the card it is a definite must include in this or any white token deck.
Cunning Evasion its just great in this deck specially with the Squad creatures, you attack with all of them, if the opponent blocks the original one you bounce to your hand and cast it again. Not to mention the other ETB creatures in the deck.
the precon seems much stronger vs the others as inquisitor, as vigilance is very powerful in a more combat heavy format, which the precon decks all are. as soon as you change it or play with non-40k decks, that value drops off because deck styles change quite a bit
I've honestly found Inquisitor Greyfax to be rather powerful as the lead. My playgroup tends to pay less attention to it by comparison to Marneus, as the direct card draw he provides draws out removal like he's holding two lightning rods. Greyfax dives under the radar a lot more, and I find most people forget she is pumping your board until they make a bad attack or you kill them. Plus I find Greyfax lets me play a lot more aggressively, as blockers that might slow me down otherwise aren't an issue.
I think Reaven Titan is super FUN card to play... sure its not GREAT , but its not that bad - and even if You once active yours Commnader ability, you have tokens to Crew It !!!:) I would not swap it out - its like ICON of POWER for the 40K :D
Can probably be fairly combotastic with Mr. Tokens. Mostly Ashnod's altar with either annointed procession, illusionist bracers, training grounds. Basically either making the 6 mana token generating ability cheaper or make it produce more dudes, then turn all those dudes into mana to activate the ability again. Neat commander.
Soooo hyped to get these decks at some point. I just scooped up the foil versions of the emperium vehicles for a mono blue JaceShipsToPhyrexia super friend/vehicle deck. My mono blue deck is finally down to only needing in foil full art Phyrexian or infinity islands and FoN for complete foiling. Let's goooooo
you want to lower that activated ability. 6 mana is a ton to pay, so heartstone is pretty good and so is training grounds. if you have both out, it only costs 3 to activate his ability. heartstone is dirt cheap under 1 € here in Europe for the retro brown version and 2.5 € for the foil silver version. training grounds on the other hand is a very expensive card, 20 or so € :)
Darien king of kjeldor looks good for this, yes you take damage but you create soldier tokens for each you took and with Calgar on the field you draw for each

I like Greyfax, Marneus is awesome but you got a target on your back before you even begin the game. Sticking to the lore as much as possible I am going with a Soldier tribal theme with a little stax for procrastination/red tape of Imperial bureaucracy LOL, Long live the Imperial Guard! There is so many good soldiers out there to pick from. Greyfax giving my troops vigilance allows the usage of classic silly old soldiers like Catapult master/squad, Crossbow infantry to attack and be ready to ping (perhaps with deathtouch) with their ''Lasguns/cannon'', anthem soldiers, etc... :P
About the reaver titan, what if you support it with the commander from neon dynasty that also generates pilot creature tokens that are 1/1s but can crew for 2 and the com' itself is basically a crysis/titan battlesuit so it's pretty fitting
I'm going in heavy on the aristocrats style of getting tokens (Open the Graves, Blightmound, Sifter of Skulls) and using death triggers to pull Marneus Calgar out earlier (Pitiless Plunderer, Black Market, Ashnod Altar, Phyrexian Altar). USE COUNTERS, protecting Marneus is really important.
One thing I've been wondering, which I have not seen the crew mention: why use interpolated value rather than average (per-card) value? Because the interpolation, at least given how it's explained, will be significantly impacted by how pushed a given deck's new card(s) would be, or how staple-ey it becomes in the future, or whether it becomes a regular reprint. Is it because you think these decks owing to their smaller reprint pool have a much higher density of valuable reprints compared to normal decks? (aka WotC didn't feel like they could put too much chaff when they have 1/3rd or 1/4th the number of reprints of usual precons)
If anyone wants to read a 1-off novel set in the 40K universe to “dip their toes” I love to recommend “Brothers of the Snake” or “Titanicus”. Both of these are also on Audible 👌 Enjoy!
On thought for the deck interpolation method Truc uses; wouldn't it be a good idea to also include the type and median of reprint values for each year or set and not just the mean (what many people refer to as average)? As many have pointed out in the past, in many different matters; the mean is affected by outliers. When talking about, say, people's salaries in a country, wouldn't using the type be a lot more, y'know, representative? And for the absolute middle, median is, by definition, the way to go. Another factor, which has also been pointed out before, probably also by the Command Zone folks, is that the total reprint value being low for the 40k decks is to be expected; there are fewer reprinted cards. Always appreciate the insight! Just figured I'd share a few thoughts of my own :) Not that they're particularly original or anything.
Silas Renn/Tymna make great commanders for the deck just by putting Greyfax into the deck and swapping out one of your lower quality cards. If you swap out something else for General's Enforcer, you make ALL your legendary humans indestructible AND hate graveyards AND make more Guardsmen!
I would love to upgrade or play with this deck…however everywhere is sold out because they didn’t print enough. I guess wizards doesn’t want my money. :(
Calgar. More potential especially with tokens. You don't need upgrades and it is still fine. While Greyfax looks good it is better as a card inside your deck than as commander itself. Hunt for heresy can't instantly be used on summon due to tap requirement and summoning sickness and all it does is provide a 1/0 vigilance to all other creatures but you need creatures on the field to even use it.
I actually don't think that reprint value of $53.66 is all that bad because, from a bang-for-your-buck perspective, the value of reprints alone would be more than, or about the same as, the price of the deck, depending on where you purchase it from. On Amazon and at my local store, that would be ~$55.
Hot take: Marneus is a design mistake and he will be the next Korvold/Chulane. He enables countless combos and generates way too much value, and blue/white means there are lots of ways to protect him. A tuned Marneus deck can win as soon as he hits the table. I don't play cEDH but it looks like the community is already brewing with him.
He's too good especially if you run some kind of infinite mana blue engine. At just 6 with no color cost, it's bam OK I have infinite astartes. You die. Now.
I think she’s better as the token lord to be honest. Marneus is most powerful as a combo commander which you aren’t going to simply “upgrade” this deck to, that’s a complete redesign. He’s also 5 mana so again, If you are sticking with the go-wide strategy is a little slow as the commander.
I had a great time playing with Greyfax on release day, so while I intend to keep all the WH40k decks intact (making this budget upgrade video solely entertainment for me), I do plan to build something new around her thicc/etched bonus card.
She's better as a card inside the deck. Grants vigilance and a +1 buff but only after you summon everything. Also she can't tap cause no haste. I think that's the main issue. If she had haste, there's so many combos you could do in 1 turn
@@PapaD93 "Combos in 1 turn" is not "turn 1 combos." He means that Greyfax can die to removal without having a chance to investigate. Why this doesn't apply to Marneus (aside from the fact that he's a goddamn ultramarine) idk. It seems to me 6 mana for token production is a LOT. unless you trainings grounds or something... you'll be using that ability after the board wipes when you have less cards in hand.
What dungeon would be the best to run with this deck? I was thinking that the undercity or maybe the dungeon of the mad mage would be viable since those are the ones that create the most tokens.
EDIT: Nevermind this comment. I played a 5-player game recently, and apparently it doesn't want to leave my brain. While everyone's correct about the "one or more" clause, aren't you all forgetting about the trigger on the original Marneus? Four instances of Marneus see the tokens entering, so you draw 4?

Irenicus's Vile Duplication is also really great here. You copy your commander to draw 2 then double all token draws

Also in a vacuum, Marneus might be better, but very often you cripple an enemy by tapping their KEY creature helping you to gain alliances. :P

After several plays of this deck, I've won twice with "For the emperor" with both adept astartes and soldier tokens.

The most budget inclusion is basalt monolith and rings of brighthearth for infinite mana/astartes for less than 7 dollars.

Why lower it when 6 is fine since you can easily infinite mana anyways. If anything just dump in a bunch of infinite mana combos like ashnold altar.

Sticking to the lore as much as possible I am going with a Soldier tribal theme with a little stax for procrastination/red tape of Imperial bureaucracy LOL, Long live the Imperial Guard! There is so many good soldiers out there to pick from. Greyfax giving my troops vigilance allows the usage of classic silly old soldiers like Catapult master/squad, Crossbow infantry to attack and be ready to ping (perhaps with deathtouch) with their ''Lasguns/cannon'', anthem soldiers, etc... :P

About the reaver titan, what if you support it with the commander from neon dynasty that also generates pilot creature tokens that are 1/1s but can crew for 2 and the com' itself is basically a crysis/titan battlesuit so it's pretty fitting

One from the Brother's War that will be interesting is Soundwave. Gets a creature token and gets value when your tokens do damage.

Very expensive. It also only makes 1 token on your upkeep.
I'm going in heavy on the aristocrats style of getting tokens (Open the Graves, Blightmound, Sifter of Skulls) and using death triggers to pull Marneus Calgar out earlier (Pitiless Plunderer, Black Market, Ashnod Altar, Phyrexian Altar). USE COUNTERS, protecting Marneus is really important.
One thing I've been wondering, which I have not seen the crew mention: why use interpolated value rather than average (per-card) value? Because the interpolation, at least given how it's explained, will be significantly impacted by how pushed a given deck's new card(s) would be, or how staple-ey it becomes in the future, or whether it becomes a regular reprint.
Is it because you think these decks owing to their smaller reprint pool have a much higher density of valuable reprints compared to normal decks? (aka WotC didn't feel like they could put too much chaff when they have 1/3rd or 1/4th the number of reprints of usual precons)
The squad effect , is that ONLY for when you’re summoning it ? Or can you cast squad whenever the card is in play?

On thought for the deck interpolation method Truc uses; wouldn't it be a good idea to also include the type and median of reprint values for each year or set and not just the mean (what many people refer to as average)?
As many have pointed out in the past, in many different matters; the mean is affected by outliers. When talking about, say, people's salaries in a country, wouldn't using the type be a lot more, y'know, representative? And for the absolute middle, median is, by definition, the way to go.
Another factor, which has also been pointed out before, probably also by the Command Zone folks, is that the total reprint value being low for the 40k decks is to be expected; there are fewer reprinted cards.

Although I love the work you guys did with this, I don't see much that needs to be improved with this deck
Silas Renn/Tymna make great commanders for the deck just by putting Greyfax into the deck and swapping out one of your lower quality cards. If you swap out something else for General's Enforcer, you make ALL your legendary humans indestructible AND hate graveyards AND make more Guardsmen!

Calgar. More potential especially with tokens. You don't need upgrades and it is still fine. While Greyfax looks good it is better as a card inside your deck than as commander itself. Hunt for heresy can't instantly be used on summon due to tap requirement and summoning sickness and all it does is provide a 1/0 vigilance to all other creatures but you need creatures on the field to even use it.
This deck is not codex compliant. Russ would be proud.

I feel like the interpolated deck prices kinda miss the fact that the unique art and new rare cards are gonna shoot these decks up in price.
We addressed that that's a possibility. We just can't estimate any sort of numbers off of that. Had to work with what we had!

I actually don't think that reprint value of $53.66 is all that bad because, from a bang-for-your-buck perspective, the value of reprints alone would be more than, or about the same as, the price of the deck, depending on where you purchase it from. On Amazon and at my local store, that would be ~$55.
Hot take: Marneus is a design mistake and he will be the next Korvold/Chulane. He enables countless combos and generates way too much value, and blue/white means there are lots of ways to protect him. A tuned Marneus deck can win as soon as he hits the table. I don't play cEDH but it looks like the community is already brewing with him.
He's too good especially if you run some kind of infinite mana blue engine. At just 6 with no color cost, it's bam OK I have infinite astartes. You die. Now.

His trigger is "one or more" so you'll only draw one card because all three copies are made in same instance.

Why doesn’t anyone build Greyfax. She’s a fun and interesting card. Marneus is a bland card.
I think she’s better as the token lord to be honest. Marneus is most powerful as a combo commander which you aren’t going to simply “upgrade” this deck to, that’s a complete redesign. He’s also 5 mana so again, If you are sticking with the go-wide strategy is a little slow as the commander.
I had a great time playing with Greyfax on release day, so while I intend to keep all the WH40k decks intact (making this budget upgrade video solely entertainment for me), I do plan to build something new around her thicc/etched bonus card.
She's better as a card inside the deck. Grants vigilance and a +1 buff but only after you summon everything. Also she can't tap cause no haste. I think that's the main issue. If she had haste, there's so many combos you could do in 1 turn

He means that Greyfax can die to removal without having a chance to investigate. Why this doesn't apply to Marneus (aside from the fact that he's a goddamn ultramarine) idk. It seems to me 6 mana for token production is a LOT. unless you trainings grounds or something... you'll be using that ability after the board wipes when you have less cards in hand.

What dungeon would be the best to run with this deck? I was thinking that the undercity or maybe the dungeon of the mad mage would be viable since those are the ones that create the most tokens.
