  • I've been on the lookout for a great portable snare for less than £100. Aiming to keep the size within the 8"-10" ranges, enough to fit in a backpack so I wouldn't need to add more to my gear back. I was mainly looking at timbale snares because I was able to mount them on my hi-hat stand, but the sound didn't seem right in many of the reviews I've come across. It was a toss-up between the Meinl and Tama Timbale Snares but I wanted to see what else was out there. I eventually came across this nugget!

I´m glad to see a N. I. drummer with all the typical twang while speaking. I used to live in Belfast 17 years ago, it makes me feel nostalgic! It´s grand you can gig 4 times a week. When I was living there, my previous band did not get so many.

I made my own suitcase kit. I use a Sonor Jungle snare, which fits in my cymbal bag. Everything else fits in the suitcase, which has a pull handle and 2 wheels on the other end. I’ve used it extensively live, and for recording. Set up and down is very quick, and the kit is stable. I only use rods or brushes.

I have this snare and have it set the same way you do. I've also added Tama's mini-tymps (6" & 8") as rack toms mounted to a cymbal stand (with a 16" crash and a 8" splash on top) and a 10" mini-tymp as a floor tom mounted on a a cymbal stand (with a 18" crash).
Depending on the venue, I'll dampen the snare with a bandana and use moon gels on the cymbals if need be.
But for the most part, I've use my setup for outdoor gigs and café gigs and it works like a charm.
Best part of all, all that gear can be taken in one trip if you get yourself the proper bags.

Awesome setup. I am in the process of downsizing my kit as well. This was just the video I needed. What hi hat are you using? Keep up the great work. You have another sub.

Hey Julien, Mentioned in another comment. I use a PEARL H-830 HI HAT STAND, but would reccomend the Yamaha Crosstown Lightweight Hi Hat Stand for a lightweight setup!

I have used this Pearl Short Fuse as a side snare on my main kit for a while..has great tone given the build quality isn't that great..also works well with my Pearl 19" Cajon - as you demonstrated.

I still have mine, going strong for bar gigs and a great side snare/pint holder for the weddings. Tbh I haven't changed the skin since I bought mine, but for what I use it for it's a great snare to have on hand!

I LOVE the sound. I play a Tama Pancake kit, and I use a double bass pedal. The distance between the hi hat stand and the edge of my snare is 13 inches. Will that clamp get this snare into that position or is it too short?

I got it and it's fun, you turn the snare off and almost get away with using it as a Timbale

@@bbernard1981 Wasn't too sure about the M80 hey, did you get the short fuse? I love lol, the screw for the snare catch came loose and would hold the snare. Turns out, I needed to replace the grub screw, but other that that I've had no problems!

I only play my cajon kit, built around a J.Leiva Cajon and Pearl Short Fuse Snare. Sold my traditional drum kit. I'm playing a REMO Fiberskyn on the snare. We mostly play in churches where the default ambassador head was way to loud and ringy.
