Back in 2003 I built a 400 2 bolt. Solid roller, lots of compression. A pair of pro topline 235 23* heads that I spent over 50 hours on. On my buddies new land and sea Dyno, it made 719 hp! Yes those heads were cast iron. And I ran a Edelbrock tunnel ram with a pair of 750 4150's
ALWAYS use a wire/coat hanger to get in the bottom of the water jackets. Sometimes there could be a couple inches of rusty crap down at the bottom of the cylinders. You'd be surprised how much comes out, if that's never been done.
My dad used to build 421 stokers for late model dirt cars 30 years ago made over 600hp. Last one he built back then still runs to this day. Nothing like sound of fast reving high hp sbc that can run dang near wide open for 100 laps straight. You got to grind out the block to clear those bolts for sure. Glad I am lucky enough to learn all this stuff hands on from him. I’m about to build a stroked 350 and I’ll be having to grind all of them 🤣
400’s were great motors to build for a dirt oval car. I want to say they would put 327 cranks in those blocks to shorten the stroke to handle that high RPM. I was going to build a 400 a few years ago. We had it in machine shop, but guy setting for a $3,000 engine that wouldn’t hold oil pressure. Now after 2 years of getting the motor fixed, he doesn’t want to race anymore.
@@mark4m557 the last 421 he built he had a custom 1 of a kind crankshaft made for it. If I remember correctly it weighed 39 pounds cost 15k! Lmao not his money his friends car. Might as well been family I learned to use riding mower in his yard shot my first pistol as well. RIP Charlie Martin
You guys ever worry about the crank getter by bent when it’s shipped to you? Think I’d have the machine shop check it for straightness when they balance the rotating sheet system.
Reading some of the comments it appears some of you guys find it hard to believe this guy is getting 600 hp from his combo, as an example my 10.7 to 1 399ci SBC makes 641hp.@6400 on 89 octane fuel.

That is the shittiest 400 block to use. Use the 2 bolt "509" casting. The 4 bolt mains crack and hit water jackets due to different cooling passages. Speaking of cooling passages you didnt tap and then plug the 3 cooling passages on both decks and then after getting the block decked smooth drill out a 3/8th hole in said plugs. It will restrict coolant flow just a touch and keep the coolant in the block a bit longer drawing more heat out from the Siamese bores. Over drill the steam vents in the deck just a touch and do the same on the heads. Lastly. . .Ditch that crap block, it will die and take that crank with it when the webbing splits apart on the bottom end.
